CHAIRS REPORT –

This year has been like a new start - very much the old Doorways in what we deliver,

whilst being more effective as a result of our partnership with Destinations Saltburn.

It’s important to make the most of new starts, times change and the needs of those

we serve change also. Time spent taking stock of just what we do, and shaping that to

the current local community needs, is very important.

A transition from single worker to a team of workers and volunteers, comes with its

challenges in building a more efficient way of working. Embedding a quality system as

to how best we can engage with young people and today’s culture. Being active on

social media is only a small piece of the whole picture.

The project has increased its network of referrals and joint working, ensuring the

service users best interest at all times. This includes visiting those in need, at places

other than DoorWays, embarking on voluntary sector consortium ideas and looking to

possible service contracts and sharing our skills.

There is a high proportion of (what is loosely called) mental health issues within our

area. The project sees people who present as unemployed, struggling on the benefit

system. This comes with anxiety, depression and a sense of hopelessness. It takes time

to build trust and acceptance which, in that time, increases self-belief, confidence and

enables change.

It is more than heart-warming to see these changes which cannot be time limited.

‘Year One Report’ for Lottery fund has been submitted and accepted. The project is

moving into years two and three, with a clearer view of where the need is greatest

and how we are best positioned to meet that need. The project is aware that it cannot

solve all the issues here in our local communities. We can however, do the best we

can, with what we have for those who come to DoorWays.

The DoorWays Committee would like to thank John Pearson for the excellent way he

has managed the changing nature of DoorWays and for his and Vanessa’s sterling

work with the young people.

From our monthly gift aid benefactors, also many donations from individuals – Food

donations that are used to support our needy in the community & Volunteering; often

in very simple ways. A very big thank you to so many. –

Copy of accounts are available on request.

If we imagine that, behaviour is like computer code – a sequence

that runs, and consistently creates poor results. Then we can become

programmers, and re-write the code, to get better results.

Something we speak to young people about, enabling possibilities

of change.

FOUNDATIONS – Who we are

DoorWays is a trusted, long established local

registered charity with a track record in delivering

outcomes for young people aged 13 -25 in relation

to their emotional health and wellbeing.

Based in Saltburn in a high street location, and

convenient for public transport, with welcoming

spaces including one to one, larger meeting rooms,

IT facilities and lounge.

Staff and volunteers are appropriately qualified and experienced in: Neuro Linguistic

Programming, Counselling skills, Emotional well-being, Life coaching, Information, advice and

guidance & Mental health

Who can Doorways help?

Young people aged 13 and above from Saltburn and East Cleveland, those in need of support

with: confidence building; self-esteem; anxiety and depression; employability;

communication skills; addictions, housing and sexual health.

Particular specialism – in relation to young men’s emotional health and mental wellbeing.

We are well networked and have established pathways in place to receive referrals from

many organisations including statutory such as GPs and schools, and voluntary including

other support organisations. Our existing service has been effectively publicised resulting in

around a third of our referrals being from individuals in the community who refer themselves.

Our door is open.

We recognise that many young people are at risk, facing multiple challenges and are

confident that Doorways can provide support to those with more than one identified issue

including: low level mental health; at risk of offending; leaving care; homeless; with a learning

disability and/or addiction.

We are able to signpost effectively where necessary to NHS professionals, statutory support

agencies, other support services and volunteer activities – the project never signs off the

client until such time as this is agreed with them.

They are free to come back to us at any point should the need arise.

Our door is open.

How will we learn – if we do not first learn, how to listen?

SERVICES – What services do we offer?

An initial assessment of need is carried out by an

experienced member of staff. We aim to complete

this assessment within 1 week of receiving a referral?

Tailored programme of support is offered either from

the Saltburn base; partner organisations or schools.

This can include one to one sessions and small group

activities. The number of sessions is open ended and

very much dependent on need. Provided free of

charge to the service user.

The project has a drop-in facility and appointments may be made Mon to Fri 9:30 – 4pm.

A range of interventions are offered including: (One to one) Information, Advice and

Guidance, Active listening, Life coaching and counselling skills. (Group work) includes:

innovative and interactive sessions, developed by Doorways, to increase personal

development in several specific areas: Perceptions, BE U, Heroes Journey and Life Skills

Labyrinth. DoorWays encourage Peer to peer support and content co-creation around well-

being themes.

We measure the difference Doorways is making on a continuous client by client basis, using

our database system to record and report on these actions / outcome measures. We monitor

the outcomes achieved with externally validated tools and outcomes measures, which are:

The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS) - designed to measure well-

being, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to monitor depression levels; and Generalised

Anxiety Disorder Assessment (GAD-7) designed to measure anxiety specifically.

We also use our internally developed evaluation questionnaire which captures the softer

outcomes achieved client by client. We use this information that they give us regarding their

experience of receiving the service to inform service design, and when it is necessary to make

any changes. We will shortly be completing a full evaluation of our existing project.

In addition, we carry out regular client consultation exercises, and have recently completed

one which will inform planning for the coming year.

Doorways gives young people coping strategies and skills which they will access and use for

the rest of their life. Our clients tell us how the impact of our service has had a massively

positive effect on their health and well-being and has enabled them to resume their role in

their family and community.

85% of our clients report an overall improvement in their emotional health and general

wellbeing following completion of their sessions with Doorways.

In addition, to the benefits experienced by individuals, our service enables

other statutory and non-specialist providers to signpost or refer on their

clients who need more bespoke help.

OUTCOMES – For DoorWays – during the 12-months, the project met with 50 new clients – creating 391

visits to the project. A high proportion of time has been spent with young people & mental

health/ managing emotions (as can be seen by the graph below).

Together with Destinations -

565 job and skills interventions over the year ranging from CV and application assistance to

interview skills, preparation for work and work related personal skills.

Under 25’s accounted for 101 of this total.

Since 1st Aug 17 the project has met with a 20% increase in new clients – both self-referral

and from other agencies.

Pleased to see many of our young people achieving great things:

• Overcoming fears (anxiety, panic attacks)

CONNECTIONS – Working with others

The project has worked with a local fitness trainer, to

produce 3 circuits around the town of Saltburn. Easy

to follow leaflets were produced, and the routes may

be walked or run – depending on ability.

BE U – In response to a request from local Job Centres,

Doorways created and delivered small group sessions

with our local unemployed young people. Focused on

Identity, the image we hold of who we are, what others

think, our digital image and how best we can shape that.

“BE U” is innovative, interactive and challenges our

perceptions, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours. Many

young people who have attended so far, have requested

one to one support into issues of anxiety, anger and

career choices. Feedback from participants & JCP

influences and guides future BE U sessions.

The projects Facebook page, “Redcar and Cleveland Jobsite” statistics tell us that we have

7,987 likes – throughout Tees Valley / Redcar & Cleveland area – Some engagements through

Inbox have resulted in visits to Doorways / Destinations – others have been supported

through the messaging /email service.

Our new web site www.dw2wellbeing.co.uk is fully operational,

incorporating a measuring tool for checking level of well-being

(Warwick & Edinburg Mental Well-Being Scale). News tab, set for

collaborative work with users.

Vision – What next?

Code is there to be re-written, we should

never be satisfied with the norm. …

We know that everything around us is

changing.

Often, the last thing we notice, and admit

– is ourselves.

Year 2 looks like a year for outreach and youth engagement. Our work into discovering the

needs of young people, is leading the project to building relationships through Schools,

Street-work and local youth centres. The project outcomes are being met by those who find

their way to Doorways. We discover there are many who do not know about the services we

offer, this is also an opportunity to develop some preventative work.

One vision the project has, is to purchase a “Street Van” complete with logo, flag etc –

facilities to make hot chocolate, a meeting place that can pop up wherever needed. East

Cleveland is scattered with (what used to be) mining villages – isolated with high

unemployment, poor transport links and depravation. People’s well-being, (sense of what

they can achieve) is very low – alcohol also plays a big part in escaping life issues. The project

is looking to test this approach over the remaining months of 2017.

Quality standards are important to the project. The decision to follow Matrix was changed,

as a result of business planning meetings. Looking more closely to the current and future

needs of the project. The revised choice is PQASSO self-assessment. This gives the project the

flexibility to have both a robust quality standard and (if required) formal assessment

certification.
