Doors and windows are the primary route of entry and exit for most burglars, so it’s vital that you know what the safest kinds of doors and locking systems are.

WHAT TYPE OF EXTERNAL DOOR DO YOU HAVE?

Wooden Wooden doors require British standard (BS3621) locks to be fitted on them for insurance purposes.

UPVC These doors have multi-point locking mechanisms which as long as they have 4 or more locking points, will comply with most of our insurer’s requirements. Please check with your Account Handler if you are unsure if your locks are sufficient.

Metal Metal doors require suitable dead/sashlocks to meet insurance needs. Sometimes, underwriters may require additional internal locking bolts to be fitted to the top and bottom.

Communal These doors are defined as being used by more than one person in houses of multiple occupations i.e.student accommodation or a block of flats.

You cannot have key locking dead/sashlocks on these doors due to fire risks.

Sliding door LocksThese locks are designed for sliding doors to prevent the door from being pulled open. Often the locks will have a hook or claw bolt.

There are a range of sliding door locks available, from 3 lever low security claw bolts to high security 5 lever hook bolts.

Horizontal Mortice LocksOften found on old Victorian doors, these locks were used to keep the knob handle far enough away to prevent the user hurting their knuckles on the frame.

In isolation, these locks are not suitable for external doors as they do not meet the British Standard BS3621.

Euro/Oval Profile Lock CasesThese locks are used with a Euro or Oval cylinder on your door.

The advantage of using a euro cylinder is you can key this lock to similar locks in your home or you can have a master key suite incorporating all of your doors and padlocks.

RIM NIGHTLATCHES

British Standard NightlatchesA nightlatch is mounted onto the door instead of being morticed into it.

These nightlatches are the securest locks available, designed to meet

or exceed the modern BS3621 standards. These locks auto-deadlock as soon as the door closes, they have a key locking internal handle, large strong strike plate and an anti-drill outside cylinder cover.

Auto – deadlocking NightlatchesThese nightlatches are not tested to meet the British Standard requirements but do incorporate the auto-deadlocking feature which means as soon as the door is closed the latch is deadlocked into position to prevent burglars from ‘slipping’ the latch open. Most of these locks also come with a key locking internal handle.

Double locking nightlatchThese locks are similar to the standard security nightlatches, offering limited security. They do have a double locking facility from the outside which must be operated by key. The extra turn of the key from outside will lock the latch into position, but it will also lock the internal handle as well. As such, these locks are not suitable for H.M.O’s (house’s of multiple occupation).

Standard Security NightlatchesThese are the lowest and most standard level of security nightlatches available. They have no additional security features - the door simply locks on closing.

These nightlatches must be used with an additional 5 lever British Standard Mortice deadlock to meet insurance requirements.

These locks can be reversed to suit outward opening doors.

Euro CylindersEuro cylinders are suitable to replace UPVC door cylinders. These cylinders are available in different levels of security and quality.

Many companies and brands sell these products but, this is definitely a case of, ‘you get what you pay for’. We advise purchasing locks with 6 pins which will give you a better protection against picking and manipulation.

Multi-Point UPVC MechanismsThese mechanisms are used on UPVC doors and there are lots of different styles and brands to choose from.

The most secure multipoint locks are ones which have a central deadbolt and also operate with hooks and rollers. This will give excellent protection against physical attacks.

The key to replacing these locks is to match your brand of lock and then measure the distances between the locking points.
