It was a seemingly endless winter, wasn’t it? Sometimes in the succession of short days, chilly winds, and endless shoveling, spring warmth can seem so far away it is difficult to remember what it feels like. However, even on the coldest days, at the HFHECT worksites there is a reminder of warmer times to come. Each nail driven is a reminder of the brighter future we’re building in partnership with our partner families and a reminder of the love and dedication which brings volunteers to the Habitat worksite even on the coldest days of winter. As the homes take shape, it becomes easier to imagine the futures that will unfold within the walls in the spring, summers, falls and winters to come.

dedications of completed homes, the engagement of new volunteers on site and in the ReStores, and the growth of HFHECT’s community. With great gratitude we look back at the cold winter months which serve as a reminder that in the coldest months, the love for our neighbors propels us forward and helps us prepare for warmer days.

HFHECT is continuing to revitalize homes and neighborhoods through the rehabilitation of vacant and foreclosed homes. Both of the following homes were rehabilitations which helped create renewed tax generating assets in the city of New London. Sincere thanks to each of the volunteers and donors who contributed to the rehabilitation of these homes!

66 Raymond Street in New London was dedicated on Sunday, December 15, where the Tracy Quilter and her daughters received the key to their home just in time for the holidays.

151 Lincoln Avenue in New London will be dedicated on Sunday, April 6th at 3:00 pm. All are invited to attend and welcome the Rich-Manchester Family in their new home.

Leaving a Legacy of Home Why We Chose to Leave A Legacy Gift to HFHECT

“I have been involved with Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut for about 10 years now. My fondest memories in my Habitat experience come from the heartfelt stories about the people we serve. I remember one home dedication in particular. When the young daughter of a new homeowner was asked what she liked best about her new home she replied, “Now we’ll be living someplace that’s warm.” That really touched my heart.

Recently when we updated our estate plan, it seemed like a natural choice to include our local Habitat affiliate as a beneficiary. My wife Lisa already directs a portion of her United Way payroll deduction toward HFHECT. From time to time we give appreciated stock to Habitat. So leaving a planned charitable gift to Habitat also made sense. And it was so easy! All we had to do was give the attorney the details about how much we wanted to give and the name and address of the charity. The attorney took care of the rest.

I was inspired to make a gift like this when I heard one of our past Board Presidents say that he had made HFHECT the beneficiary of one of his life insurance policies. I decided that I wanted to make a gift like that someday, too.

Habitat for Humanity of Eastern Connecticut is excited to host its annual Faith Breakfast on Wednesday May 14 at the United Methodist Church of Gales Ferry. This is an opportunity to learn about HFHECT’s current work and opportunities to be involved.

Clergy and lay leaders are also invited to join HFHECT for a day of fun, hard work and fellowship on a build site for the annual Clergy Build Day on Tuesday, June 3.

Leaders and lay people from all local faith communities are invited to participate in these events and put faith into action!

HFHECT is very excited to share that the 6th Annual Bid to Build event will be held on Friday May 2 at 6:30 at the Waterford ReStore at 82 Boston Post Road, Waterford.

This fun event will feature a live auction of contractor services, live entertainment by “That’s What She Sang,” a basket raffle, refreshments and more!

Tickets to the event are $10, and may be ordered using the enclosed form, or purchased at the door (subject to availability). All proceeds support the construction of homes in New London and eastern Windham Counties.
