What is pedal powered washing machine?

Pedal powered washing machine is made up of waste material

like empty chemical drums, scraped bicycle, and iron bushes.

By using such waste products washing machine is made which

is cheaper and saves electricity, thus reduces electricity bills.

It is also helpful to the users as they can reduce their fat by

pedaling which is a good exercise.

By using this machine one can utilize his time as he can do

exercise and can wash clothes at the same time.

Pedal Power

Pedal power is the transfer of energy from a human source

through the use of a foot pedal and crank system.

Less commonly pedal power is used to power agricultural and

hand tools and even to generate electricity.

Pedal power is simple, efficient, and practical.

Pedal Powered Washing Machine is basically works on an Agitator,

Drum, Pedal and Chain Mechanism to produce the motion of the

drum to wash the clothes when they rub each other.

Human Machine

We are energy transformers!

We digest our fuel (food) to supply our brain and muscles with the energy need to think and move.

About as efficient as an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) (35%).

Page 5: DOON INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, RISHIKESH PPT

How Efficient we are?

Thing Efficiency Human (food to mechanical) 18% to 26%

IC Engine theoretical maximum: 35%,

Reality: 20% Electric motors 65% to 95% Transmissions 75% to 99%

Idea of using Pedal Power

World is a storehouse of energy. We all know that energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another.

But we are wasting resources that can produce energy as if they are limitless.

If we can renew and reuse the energy we waste, it would help in some way to the problem of scarcity of energy, which is the major threat of present world.

Humans are able to generate approximately 150W of power while riding bicycle.

Necessity of Pedal Powered Washing Machine

According to the report of IIFL, it can be seen that even after 65 years

of independence 17.7 % of India is unelectrified.

All of the 5161 towns in India are electrified, i.e. cent percent in the

case of towns.

In India 82.2% villages are electrified, while 17.7 % villages are

unelectrified.

The worst situation is in Jharkhand where only 31.1 %villages are

electrified.

While, the consumption of electricity in the country is increasing at the

rate of 10% per year.

Types of Pedal Powered Washing Machines

Hand Operated Human Powered Machines: - These machines are operated by hand and are available in the following forms :-

(i) Hand Crank with Gear Transmission Unit:

e.g. Sugarcane Juice extractor. (ii) Hand Crank with Chain Drive:

e.g. Tri-cycle for orthopedically handicapped person.

Page 9: DOON INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, RISHIKESH PPT

Foot Operated Human Powered Machines: These machines are operated by foot and following two basic forms of foot operated human powered machines are available:-

(i) Treadle Powered Unit:

e.g. Sewing Machine (ii) Bicycle Technology: The rotary motion of foot

pedal is transmitted through crank, chain and sprocket to the processing unit.

Power Source (Human Power)

A bicycle style, foot powered device is a feasible option. Simple low cost parts make the device cheap to construct

and simple to maintain. Sufficient power can be generated to create the mechanical

action required in the washing process, with less time-input than traditional methods.

A human powered device has limited environmental impact in terms of emissions from the power source used to generate the mechanical action.

Agitation Method

VERTICAL AXIS AGITATOR:-

A central agitator alternating directions induces friction between the clothes to mechanically remove dirt and stains.

Page 12: DOON INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, RISHIKESH PPT

HORIZONTAL AXIS TUMBLER:-

Instead of using an agitator, the horizontal washer utilizes fins along the inner barrel that lifts the clothes on the side of the drum, and let them fall back in the water on top of other clothes.

Page 13: DOON INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, RISHIKESH PPT

TILTED AXIS TUMBLER:-

A tub spinning at an inclined axis using a helical iron strip would perform the same kind of action, in a fashion similar to a cement mixer.

Page 14: DOON INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, RISHIKESH PPT

CRANKSHAFT PISTON:-

Rather than using rotational motion to agitate the clothes, we were considering using a crack-shaft to convert the rotation of the pedals to vertical translation of a piston.

Page 15: DOON INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, RISHIKESH PPT

BUBBLER:-

A rather new concept is pressurizing air and bubbling it forcefully through the clothes.

Page 16: DOON INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY, RISHIKESH PPT

Electricity Generation Unit

The rotational energy that is generated when the shaft rotates because of the application of force on the pedals can be used in two ways.

This energy can also be used in dynamo/alternator, which is then converted to electrical energy.

Rotational energy of the shaft can be used to pump water out from the well, to drive a washing machine, to operate blender/grinder etc.

WHAT IS A KILOWATT HOUR?

All electricity consumption in your home is measured in a unit called a kilowatt hour (kWh). 1 kWh = 1,000 W consumed in one hour.

COST PER KILOWATT HOUR

Our personal cost per kilowatt hour can be calculated by dividing our more recent electric bill’s Rupees amount by number of kWh’s on that bill.

According to the available data Washing Machine used (665 watts, 8 uses per week, average for family of four, 45 min cycles):- pedal powered washing machine will save the Rs.800 of used 200kWh units every year for washing. The value of power wattage consumption varies from Company- to- Company Washing Machines.

Conclusions

The Pedal Powered Washing Machine is the creativity of the real world energy

crisis due to which whole world is suffering from low economy growth and

development rate.

Although, in the present time technology is growing rapidly but after ten years it

will lead to a big breakdown if we will not save our resources.

Villagers who use bicycles are going to be benefitted the most and also the urban

people who suffer from different disease due to the compact area of cities no space

for walking and exercise and also the rate of electricity per unit is hiked time to

time.

This machine will wash the clothes as well as helpful for exercise and also save the

electricity bills. Thus this may also called as the “Washing Cum Exercise Machine”.
