caused a serious diminution in our cash contributions, and but for it we

should have been unable to respond to a large number of appeals which

called for money appropriations.

Our expenditure in relief of every kind has risen to Frs. 1,380,697.48,

distributed in the same manner as detailed in our last report, but naturally

on a mu ch larg er scale, and w e have be en in -a position to m aterially

assist with cash contributions a number of societies engaged in many

different phases of relief work.

W e we nt as far afield as Serbia n  Relief,  when, in response to very

urgent appeals to help the Serbian population which was reported to be

fleeing before the invaders to the Adriatic, we chartered, jointly with the

National Allied Relief Committee, the Buffalo War Relief Committee, the

Serbian Distress Fund, Boston, the Serbian League and the Serbian Relief

Com mittee of America, the steamer M en hi r which accomplished some

very useful wo rk. In this we were fortun ate in receiving the assistance of

Dr. Ryan, of the American Red Cross, who accompanied Mr. Charles

Butler, a member of our Committee, on many of the trips in those

dangerous waters .

Our Cle aring A ccou nt Statement shows that mo re societies and

individuals are now availing themselves of the facilities we offer of

transmitting their donations, free of charge, to the recipients and placing

them on permanent record.

We gratefully acknowledge further contributions towards our

Maintenance expenses from the American Red Cross, the War Relief

Clearing H ouse for Fra nce and H er Allies and the Refugees Relief Fu nd.

The following figures of the numbers of cases received and handled

by our Transportation Department will give a good idea as to the magni

tude of that branch of our wo rk. In our last repo rt we show ed that from

the commencement up to December 31,  1915, w e had received 22,299 cases

of relief supp lies and sent out 25,761 cases. D urin g the six m ont hs en din g

June 30, 1916, we received 23,214 cases and sent out 24,768 cases, making

a grand total of 96,042 cases handled between November, 1914, and June

30 ,  1916. A very large prop ortio n of the se cases, about

  55%,

  was

transp orted from New Y ork to Paris, cleared throug h th e Customs and

re-expedited to consignees in every part of France without any charge to

the individuals or societies in America from whom they were received.

We have also continued our policy of making no deduction whatever for

our maintenance expenses from funds received in response to our appeals

for relief work. W e have only applied to our M aintenance Ex pen ses

Account such contributions as were given to us specifically for that purpose.

In this repo rt we have not . at tem pted to mention

  the^

 don ors of the

num erous cases of su pplies w hich are includ ed in the figures of our

Transportation Department given above, but we cannot omit to refer to

the generous support we have continued to receive from the American

Red Cross. Th ey have sent us a constan t stream of cases of hospital

supplies of every de scription and of the best quality, w hich we have -

distributed in their name, as their representatives in Fran ce. T he P. S. D .

Fund (Physicians, Surgeons and Dentists) by its cash contributions has been

one of our chief sources of supply of money to buy instruments and other

articles which could only be purchased in Paris or for which the demands

have been of so urgent a nature that they could not be ordered from

Am erica. W e have, how ever, written ex pressions of than ks to all genero us

givers whenever their names and addresses have been made known to us,

and we have also brought to the knowledge of the recipients, whenever

possible, the names of those who have sent the supplies, impressing upon

all that they were offerings rather than gifts and requesting that they be

accepted as expressions of sympathy and goodwill on the part of the

people of America for the people of France.
