Message Ms Shelley FrayneDSG Headmistress

Dear DSG Community

We began this year basking in the reflected glory of last year’s many achievements and successes. Our 2016 Matric group was wonderfully talented across the spectrum of disciplines on offer here and consequently it was a boom year for us academically as well as in the cultural and sporting realms.

Nevertheless, talent makes up a miniscule part of the ingredients required to attain success. Propping up the outstanding academic results, cultural endeavours and sporting achievements for 2016 was a massive, efficient and effective team at work. We have developed over the years, a team consisting of committed and dedicated teachers; experienced, wise pastoral staff; good coaches; and an excellent administration and support staff. Added to this is a pupil body that shares in the joy and celebration of individual and team successes and has a good work ethic and a growing resilience.

DSG is a school that has undergone significant structural change over the years. Some of the developments include a world-class aquatic centre; a new junior school and boarding house; a fourth senior house; upgrades to the other houses; an extension and upgrade of the existing dining hall; and the purchase of two houses across the road to accommodate a grade 8 house and a Wellness Centre. Mostly, this has been

made possible through a growth in pupil numbers (this number is now stable) and solid fiscal leadership from Council which saw the institution of a deposit.

Members of our community have also been wonderfully generous in giving of their loyalty, support, skills and finance. Some of these donations have been earmarked for specific projects such as the dining room and housing upgrades, and a significant amount has been donated towards our bursary fund by a couple of generous donors as well as by the DSG Guild. We are most grateful to all these people whose passion and care for DSG and its future sustainability is demonstrated in this way.

DSG’s future aspirations are mainly academic. Unfortunately, we have not been able to finish our housing upgrades and Espin House still does not meet our ‘boarding brand promise’. We will work hard to carve out the necessary funds to build a new academic block, complete Espin and upgrade other academic spaces in the next few years.

I thanks all our donors and our community for their care of our unique and very special school. Warm regards Ms Shelley FrayneHeadmistress

Thank youMrs Angie MarrinerDirector of the Foundation Office

One of the many highlights of 2016 was watching the Nonnie Mullins Dining Hall transform into a bright, modern and welcoming facility. We are committed to excellence in all fields and it is imperative that our facilities are continually upgraded and developed. Further renovations will be undertaken and more new facilities will be built in the coming years. DSG enjoys an excellent track record of giving girls, whose access to education is often limited, not by ability but by financial resources, the opportunity of a life changing education. We continue to fundraise for the Bursaries and Scholarships Fund and this need is more critical now than ever.

May I take this opportunity to extend my sincere appreciation to the members of our DSG community whose ongoing support contributes to the sustainability of DSG so that future generations of girls will be able to experience the unique learning experience offered at our great school.

Mrs Angie MarrinerDirector of the Foundation Office

My School Programme

DSG Old Girls, parents, staff and friends of our schools are encouraged to make use of the MySchool Card, thereby raising funds for our schools.

>500 Club

The 500 Club is an innovative way of raising funds for DSG and provides an opportunity for participants to win substantial cash prizes by way of a monthly draw.

Currently, the annual membership fee is R480. A decision has been made to increase the membership fees annually, by the percentage increase in school fees as per Council’s decision, from 2018. *Active members are defined as having paid their membership fees for the current year

Ways of GivingIf you have been part of this extraordinary community, have had contact with it in some way or have seen family members or friends benefit from their experience, it is our hope that that you will see the value in leaving a lasting legacy by giving back.

There are several ways in which you can contribute to DSG:

A Cash donation can be made once-off, monthly or annually via a number of payment methods. These include a direct deposit of using your MasterCard / Visa card through the DSG Foundation website.

Gifts-in-Kind include a variety of goods and services which can be donated to the school. These include professional fees, building materials, computer and sports equipment etc.

Bond, Shares, Life Insurance Policies, Real Estate and other Securities may also be donated or bequeathed to DSG.

A Bequest is an effective way to make a planned donation. It might be that, although you would like to make a gift in your lifetime, other demands on your finances have precluded this. Alternatively you may have given at other points in your life and now would like to provide a final tribute to your school.

Your bequest can contribute towards the endowment fund, scholarships and bursary support, or campus, academic, sporting or cultural development.

Planning a bequest to DSG allows you to accomplish both financial and philanthropic objectives. These include preserving the family name; honouring loved ones; minimising tax burdens and supporting education at DSG. We are always happy to discuss your wishes and intentions but, regretfully, DSG is unable to offer direct legal or financial advice on drafting a Will or estate planning. Please consult your legal adviser before drafting a new Will or updating your existing one. A Codicil to your Will is available from the Foundation Office.

Highlighted below are the major projects which were funded by our donors in 2016.

Upgrade to Nonnie Mullins Dining HallOn the afternoon of 28 July 1954, in bitterly cold weather, the foundation stone of the Nonie Mullins Memorial Dining Hall was laid by two of Nonie’s sisters, Mrs Win Levick and Mrs Ruth Knowling. Mrs Levick gave a delightful speech to the girls on Nonie’s life, and concluded by saying that anyone in the future who wanted to know who she was and what her connection was to DSG, should read the inscription on the cornerstone:

Nonie Mullins, daughter of the School, and always its life-long friend.

After 62 years, it became increasingly apparent that the Nonnie Mullins Dining Hall was no longer able to meet the demands of a modern boarding dining facility.

In response to the issues of over-crowding, noise, insufficient serving space, and the lack of supervision within the dining hall, the Nonnie Mullins Dining Hall has been transformed into a large, light and welcoming multi-purpose space.

An extension stretching to almost the stone wall and the elevated garden has increased the size of the dining hall by a third so that the whole school, including the junior school pupils, and the staff complement can be accommodated in a spacious and comfortable setting.

This project has also provided an opportunity to blend the façade of the Dining Hall in with its beautiful neighbouring buildings – the Victoria Library and Greystone.

As part of a fundraising campaign in the 1950s, Old Girls were given the opportunity to have their names engraved on the newly purchased wooden chairs in the new dining hall. Unfortunately, the expertise to carve names into wood is sadly not an option today, but numerous parents and Old Girls have donated towards the Dining Hall renovation and have received a customised plaque on the back of chairs, and on benches and tables.

Bursaries and ScholarshipsBursary funding has the ability to fundamentally change the life of an individual, her family and her extended community, and is a wonderful way of giving back to DSG and South Africa. Bursary funding continues to be a critical part of our offering as more and more families are requesting financial support. Some of the funding is gifted as a response to a direct appeal for the support of an individual and, in these cases, the donor is kept appraised of the girl’s progress and a relationship is often forged between the donor and the recipient.

We enjoy wonderful relationships with the Student Sponsorship Programme, the Allan Grey Orbis Foundation and the Standard Bank Tutuwa Community Foundation which provide funding and other forms of support for pupils from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. These organisations have chosen to partner with DSG based on the breadth of our educational offerings and experience, and the capacity to support and nurture our scholars.

DSG has developed a Student Teacher programme which enables students to qualify as teachers in a highly professional, stimulating and mentoring environment by living on the DSG campus and by participating in many facets of school life. We are grateful for the funding we receive from the Epoch and Optima Trusts towards this strategic programme.

Other Projects Unspecified donations are either used at the discretion of the Headmistress or the Council for smaller projects, or the funds are invested for future projects.

2016 DonorsThe Foundation Office gratefully recognises the loyal support of all donors.

The list comprises all individuals , trusts, foundations and organisations who have made a gift through the Foundation Office to DSG between January and December 2016. We have included those who have donated gifts in kind.

Numerous donors wish to remain anonymous and some of our largest benefactors elect to preserve their anonymity. The names of our anonymous donors have purposefully been omitted from this list, but our thanks and recognition extend to this important segment of our donors. Every effort has been made to ensure that the list is accurate and that it reflects the philanthropic story of DSG in 2016.
