Fall 2013

Dear Friends of Freeport Public Schools,

Several years ago, an at-risk Freeport High School student who was enrolled in a high level math class asked me, “Why do you volunteer so much time in the schools, Mrs. Fishburn?” After contemplating for a few seconds, I responded, “....because I believe in you. I believe in your future. I believe in your dreams. I believe if we all work together, we will create a better world for ourselves and future generations.” Unimpressed and intent on solving his trigonometry question, the student replied, “It’s going to take a lot more people working together to help me understand this math problem!”

With the persistent support of his teachers and involved community members, this student went on to graduate from Freeport High School, then from college, and today he is successfully employed in the global marketplace. Many of the educational materials, such as the graphing calculator used by this math student, were purchased through funding provided by the Freeport Community Public School Fund. Our organization has helped place necessary educational materials and equipment into the hands of students, such as this young man, for their use in every classroom, on every day, and in every school in our district.

It takes a “whole lot of people working together” to insure the success of our students. Over the course of 30 years and solely through the generosity of our many, many donors, FCPSF has purchased more than $819,000 worth of items specifically requested by our teachers for their classrooms in district schools. Operating independently from FSD#145, the Public School Fund is an autonomous, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) designated organization, and we work hand-in-hand with our district teachers to provide teacher-requested items which the school district is unable to supply.

Our organization relies on the concern and generosity of people like you. Freeport Community Public School Fund is kicking off its 31st year of fund raising, and we need your help more than ever before. As technology rapidly changes the world around us and infiltrates every aspect of our lives, the cost of providing even basic classroom materials has escalated. We anticipate the total dollar value of requested classroom items this year will far exceed our resources and ability to provide those items, unless we are able to increase our level of donations.

2

You CAN make a difference. Your tax-deductible gift of any amount to the Public School Fund benefits the whole community by investing in our children’s future. Donations may be given for the general or endowment fund, or as a memorial or an honorarium to recognize someone who has made a positive difference in the lives of our children. You may also designate your donation for a specific subject, purpose, or grade level, and we will ensure your gift is allocated for teachers in the specified area.

No gift is too small. No gift is too large. It is with much gratitude to our community and public school friends near and far that we are able to continue providing students and teachers with educational materials ranging from books and musical instruments to graphing calculators and smart boards. Every penny is appreciated, and every dollar is maximized. Your gift will make a difference for generations to come. Please consider donating today.

Sincerely,

Cindy FishburnFreeport Community Public School Fund President

Arde Burt - Arde was born in Montana and raised in Canada for her first 13 years. She attended 5 high schools in Minnesota. Arde graduated from Concordia College in Moorehead, Minnesota. After she received a Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, Arde taught art and design at the University of Wisconsin Stout and the University of Wisconsin Madison. Following marriage in 1966, Arde moved to Freeport where her son, Matthew, graduated from Freeport High School in 1986. Arde was a teacher to the end and would grade herself unsparingly on her performance, be it cooking; skiing; painting; or any other activity. Education was always a top priority for Arde. Memorial designated for the High School Art Department by family and friends.

Judy Dees - Judy Dees was well-loved by her family and community. She is remem-bered by Freeport School District Staff for her dedication to her position of “sub clerk” – lining up substitutes for the many different positions held by teachers and staff members in the Freeport Schools. Memorial established by Sue and Ralph Norman, Sandie and Don Tresemer and Marilyn Loper.

Sonja Engel - Sonja Engel was the mother of five sons, Craig, Curtis, Chris, Corey and Chad. They all received an excellent education while attending the Freeport Schools. She currently has grandchildren in the Freeport School District. Sonja was active in her church, loved baking, playing Bingo and spending time with all of her family. Memorial established by Susan and Stephen Lafferty.

Anne Floe - Anne grew up in Freeport, graduating from FHS. Anne's mother was Norma Reed, also being honored with a Memorial to the School Fund this year. Anne’s children and grandchildren attended and attend the Freeport Schools, as well. Anne enjoyed golfing, bowling, going to casinos and vacationing on Sanibel Island, FL. Anne took great pride in being a frequent blood donor and was proud of all of her children and grandchildren. Memorial designated by Bill and Kittye Senneff.

Dean Garrett - Dean Garrett was our friend and a long-time educator in the Freeport Public Schools. We felt a contribution to the School Fund was an appro-priate way to honor Dean, as he spent so much of his life in service to the Freeport School students. Memorial established by Duane and Ruth Smith.

Dorothy Grimes - Dorothy was born in Saginaw Michigan. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan School of Nursing. She mar-ried Harvey Grimes in 1950 and they moved to suburban Philadelphia where she worked as a nurse at Presbyterian Hospital. She also worked for many years as a school nurse. After retiring, Dorothy and her husband Harvey moved to Freeport, which allowed them to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren, Kevin and Megan Moore, are graduates of FHS. She instilled the importance of quality education to her family and she and Harvey were annual supporters of the School Fund. Dorothy was active in supporting her community of Freeport through volunteer work up until the time of her death. Memorial established by Susan and Stephen Lafferty.

11

Charlotte Hartman - Charlotte Hartman was a woman of both grace and humor, a mainstay of the Freeport business community for many years. She and her family owned and ran Hartman’s TV & Appliance in Freeport, and Charlotte was an integral part of the business from the day it opened in 1951. She was an active volunteer in many organizations and lent financial support to many others in the Freeport community. Charlotte was an avid advocate for women in the workplace, fond of saying that a woman’s place was wherever she wished to be. Memorial established by Dr. Ray and Linda Alberts.

Harry Jacobson - I knew Harry Jacobson almost five decades. He was a man of integrity, dignity, dependability, respectability, honesty, and he was ego-less. Harry was always willing to help others. He was so valuable in the lives he touched and the students he taught. I will never forget him. Memorial established by Jim Chaplin, as well as Duane and Ruth Smith.

Evelyn Jungerberg - Evelyn Jungerberg was the mother to Sandie (Don) Tresemer and grandmother to Dan (Class of 1993) and Carrie (Class of 1996). Evelyn was not very happy when the Tresemers moved from Machesney Park to Freeport in 1991, but she truly was proud of Don and Sandie’s contribution to the Freeport School District for many years and the achievements that Dan and Carrie made as students and athletes while attending Freeport Schools. Evelyn followed the team games on the radio and when they came to Harlem she would attend those games and cheer for the Pretzels as she became a proud fan. Memorial established by Don and Sandie Tresemer.

He then became a journeyman electrician and joined his mother in the management of Morse Electric. Under his vision and the hard work of many, the company grew to provide electrical services to several areas of the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
