Yesterday we held the 2012 Summer Student Nurse Internship Workshop and Awards Ceremony. The SNI coordinators were faced with a challenge of selecting 5 award recipients for the internship essay awards. The essays were selected based upon the submissions that best exemplified a knowledgeable and compassionate patient care experience. The five award recipients were:
Lauren Astorino (Hamot) Evelyn Kurpiewski (CHP) Sambina Roschella (PUH) Kristen Schall (NW) Rose Turley (SHY)
Summer interns also have the opportunity to nominate their preceptor for the SNI Preceptor Award. We selected two recipients:
Angela Harb (Mercy) Nancy Miller (Magee)
The winning essays and preceptor nominations are attached. I think you will find some very touching stories about the art and science of nursing. Student Nurse Intern Essay Award WinnerIntern Essay Award Winners: Lauren Astorino (UPMC Hamot)
The first week of my journey as an intern, I had a wonderful encounter with a patient. This particular experience would become the motivation to the sparkle in my smile throughout my days at UPMC Hamot.
His name was Luke. Luke was in his late 30’s and had Down’s syndrome. He would be missing the Special Olympics due to his illness, where he shined every year as an all‐star swimmer. He would typically be on his trip that very day and would compete the following day. Despite this disappointment, Luke was so pleasant. I believe, “Thank you,” were his favorite words. I was in awe of his sweetness and his gentle character. At the end of my shift I told Luke goodbye and that, I hoped he would feel better and maybe I would see him tomorrow. Luke looked at me and grinned from ear to ear as he said something I could not quite make out. I told him I could not hear him and again he smiled, while looking down at his hand. He then held up his hand, “I love you,” in sign language, while again saying, “I love you.” As I walked out of the hospital that night, all I could think was‐‐I am right where I want to be. Those are the moments that make every long week, tough day, and busy hour beyond worth it. It was not only a pleasure, but also a privilege to assist in taking care of Luke.
