It’s hard to explain what drives some Italian designers to develop a research project. In fact, theoretical research only has concrete applicable effects after a long period of time.It is equally hard to identify whether this necessity is rooted in a personal instinct or in education and training. It is uncommon for a designer – whose education is based on pragmatism – to assert that to conduct research is more inspiring than solving a design problem from a stylistic angle. It is singular to admit that to focus a project at production also serves to nourish and communicate one’s own research. In everyday practice the designer must, in many cases, prepare the project within a short period of time. Requests of a commercial character (for instance adaptation of a project to competition requirements or to specific stylistic references) do not allow any in-depth conceptual elaboration. Research, often left aside in favour of a more routine design, becomes unfeasible. Heeding only formal and technological aspects, the designer renounces all activities related to critique and creativity. To include a research phase in every project is an anything but common practice among designers. It becomes a personal, seldom requested, method. To develop, research and accumulate theoretical experiences becomes, when the opportunity arises, a practical inspiration for outlining the project. The product is therefore result of a research that may be specific or continuous, casual or wanted. It is the formalization of a theory, of a new concept of use, of a new behaviour or way to relate to the social

The home office – formal and informal, static and transformable – uses soft technologies and subtle images, far from the stereotype of Fifties’ metal furniture. The work space becomes a place suitable for countless typically domestic activities and actions. It is equally simple to use the furniture, the accessories and the storage units in the kitchen to iron or put away a dress. Due to the ever-changing configurations of communication systems, the need to connect and disconnect apparatuses and the fragmentation of computers into accessories, it is necessary to design supports and storage units that are easy to combine, and that can do without all the mechanical elements found in the modernistic office. Designed for the home, they are just as well suited to every workplace of the contemporary city and the activities conducted there.

Passepartout
Passepartout is a block in polyurethane, shaped so as to form a relaxing chair, the last word in framed chaise longues, a furniture item that one can live inside (and not on or around).
Giovanni Lauda e Dante Donegani
Passepartout was a child of chance. In 1997 we have developed a theoretical project – for the Ottagono magazine – on the theme of living, 25 years after the exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape.” One of the elements of our “foldaway home” was a wardrobe that could be used as a place for relaxing, a hollowed-out space inside a red block. After the publication of the magazine Massimo (Morozzi) called us and told us that he wanted to develop one or more elements of our project for Edra. Massimo eventually, and wisely, decided to only continue working on the element that was most similar to a chaise longue, and he defined the outer volumes of the item while we were to design the “hole.” Our first attempt was all wrong, but on our second try we got it right. A Polaroid from 1997 featuring Valerio (Mazzei) lying down inside an unfinished polyurethane block demonstrates that the test was successful. Along with that Polaroid we keep a photograph from 2000 of Anna Valle naked, inside a red Passepartout, in an advertisement for tights. Giovanni Lauda and Dante Donegani

It seldom happens, in the contemporary era, that products succeed in being considered archetypes without being the child of new technologies. The peculiarity of Multipot and Multibook is the different approach to living that they introduce. They are the earliest examples of a new way to order and arrange a specific place for containing the confusion we carry in our pockets, and to organize the chaos caused by our need to recharge our portable instruments. Multipot conceals a container with power outlets in its vase shape. Multibook optimizes the same function for a more specific place (the desk). Both represent hybrid objects combining several actions, including the anything but negligible one of indicating its presence and position by means of light.

Multipot is the first multipurpose lamp produced by Rotaliana. The pot in injection moulded polycarbonate contains adapters and excess wire. The cover in coloured polycarbonate contains a multiple socket with 5 outlets and can be used as a tray for placing small objects; it is luminous and thus visible in the dark.
