It is interesting to note that in Pennsylvania there are still standing fifty-eight provincial churches, and Donegal is the eighth on the list which have had a continuous exist- ence from the date of organization to the present time. The first settlement of Scotch-Irish, or Ulster Scots, occupied the post of danger on the Northwest, within the boundaries of Lancaster county, then Chester, about 1715, and was along Chickies Creek, in the vicinity of Don- egal Spring. These pioneers named their settlements after the places of their birth. Donegal was a great mar- itime country of Ireland, for which reason a great number of our early immigrants sailed from this port. Of the several Scotch-Irish settle- ments in America in the latter part of the seventeenth and the beginning of the eighteenth centuries, the one in Donegal township, Lancaster county, Pa., was the most notable. It is interesting to note that inPennsylvania there are still standingfifty-eight provincial churches, andDonegal is the eighth on the listwhich have had a continuous exist-ence from the date of organization tothe present time.

The first settlement of Scotch-Irish,or Ulster Scots, occupied the post ofdanger on the Northwest, within theboundaries of Lancaster county, thenChester, about 1715, and was alongChickies Creek, in the vicinity of Don-egal Spring. Its Organization.

William Penn, from Queenstown, onhis second visit, and whose remainsare buried at Derry graveyard, settledupon the land adjoining DonegalChurch on the South, in 1718, forwhich he received a patent from thePenns in 1736 for 212 acres. He wasthe first ruling elder of this church,and to him belongs the credit of or-ganizing the congregation, and the se-lection of one of the most admirableand attractive sites for a church edi-fice within the broad limits of theState.

The first meeting-house was erectedwith logs,and stood a few yards southof the present structure. After it hadbeen used for a dozen years the pres-ent edifice was erected. Loose stoneswere collected from the surface of theground in the surrounding woods, withwhich the walls were built. Therewas no effort made by the masons todress the stone; they were simply laidin mortar to a line. The edges werecraggy and rough. And there wereno stone in the building that one mancould not conveniently handle. Thewalls were plastered on the inside,but the outside was left in its roughstate until the remodeling of the housein 1850.

Description of Edifice.

The front of the building was thesouth side, facing the graveyard, witha double doorway, the only entranceinto the house. The door frame andwindows had a circular head. Thepulpit stood against the northern sideand immediately opposite the door-way. A broad aisle led from the doorto another one running lengthwise ofthe building in front of the pulpit.Upon each side of the pulpit and fac-ing it were nine pews, Upon eachside of the aisle running from the en-trance door were seven pews.

each end of the room, which ran atright angles to the main aisle, fromwhich entrance was had to corre-sponding seven pews already mention-ed. These pews faced the pulpit.There were four pews facing thissmall aisle and between it and theend walls. For some years after thechurch was built the floors of theaisles were composed of earth. Nostoves were admitted. An innovationof that kind was considered incom-patible with the worship of a trueChristian. Gradually, however, twolarge stoves, cast at Cornwall, wereintroduced, and the aisles paved withbrick. The seats and backs of thepews were made of yellow pine andoak. The backs came to the neck ofan ordinary person, and were perpen-dicular. At the corners of the pewswere corner boards rounded out to fitthe backs, and which really made itmore uncomfortable to sit.

Two or three rows of pews in frontof the pulpit had inclined shelves,upon which the hymn books wereplaced. Of course, there was no paintupon any of the woodwork. Thus thebuilding stood until 1772, when it wasremodeled.

Some Early Preachers.

Rev. David Evans supplied theDonegal Church in 1720, and Rev. Geo.Gillespie and Rev. Robert Cross wereamong the supplies in 1721, probablyfor the year 1722 also. In the fall of1723, Rev. Messrs. Alexander, Hutche-son and Daniel McGill were sent byNew Castle Presbytery. In 1725 Rev.Adam Boyd, of Octoraro, gave Done-gal the one-sixth of his time. On the24th day of September, 1726, Rev.James Anderson was called to thepastorate of the church, and on thelast Wednesday in August, 1727, hewas installed. He died July 16, 1740.Rev. Hamilton Bell had charge of the

church from 1742 until the fall of1743. The pulpit was supplied byPresbytery until November 23, 1748,when Rev. Joseph Tate was installedas pastor, in which relation he con-tinued until his death, October 11,1774, a period of twenty-six years.*

The Presbytery of DonegalThe Presbytery of Donegal was or-

ganized October 11, 1732, and was fifthin line of succession in the UnitedStates, following the organization ofthe Presbyteries of Philadelphia,Snow Hill, New Castle and LongIsland. Following is the WestminsterConfession of Faith and Catechism,which was signed by the members ofthe church:

"I, having seriously read and per-used the Westminster Confession andCatechism, do declare in the sight ofGod and all here present, that I dobelieve, and am fully persuaded, thatso far as I can discern and under-stand said Confession and Catechism,they are in all things agreeable to theWord of God, taking them in the plainand obvious sense and meaning of thewords, and accordingly I do acknowl-edge them as the Confession of myfaith, and do promise through divineassistance forever to adhere thereun-to. I also believe the Directory forthe Exercise of Worship, Disciplineand Government, commonly connect-ed to said Confession, to be agreeableto the word of God, and do promiseto conform thereunto in my practice,as far as in emergent circumstances,I can attain unto.

Second Tuesday of April, 1776, andninth day of the month, the Presby-tery met according to adjournment V.P. P. S., the. Rev. Messrs. Slemons,Cooper, Lang, Balch, King, Vance, Mc-Ferven and Creaghead, with JamesMoor, William Porter, John Mc-Dorvel, Samuel Park, Wm. Rankin,and John Neilson, Elders. Absent,Rev. Messrs. Samuel Thompson,Hogg,Rhea, Hunt, Amos, Thompson, Blackand Dougal.

The Presbytery was opened by Mr.Cooper with a sermon and Psalm 97-1."Praise ye the Lord, for it is good tosing praises unto our God, for it ispleasant and praise is comely."

Mr. Vance was chosen Moderatorand Mr. Balch as clerk for the currentyear.

Rev. Mr. McFarquhar produced am-ple Testimonials from the Presbyteryof Gairlock, in Scotland, bearing dateApril 7, 1775, and a Certificate of Dis-mission from said Presbytery, bearingdate May 25, 1775. In consequence ofwhich, the Presbytery unanimouslyagree in cheerfully receiving him as amember of this judicatrive, and do ac -cordingly receive him. Ordered thatMr. Lang take care of the above-men-tioned papers, and that they may beproduced to the Synod at their nextmeeting.

Ordered that supplications and allother papers directed to the Presby-tery be brought on and read.

A call to Rev.Colin McFarquhar fromthe united congregations of Donegaland Mt. Joy was brought in by Messrs.James Anderson and Thomas Clingan,commissioners for said congregations.The commissioners represent that thecongregations engage to pay Mr. Mc-

Farquhar annually the sum of onehundred pounds, to be secured to Mr.McFarquhar,by bonds or otherwise, tohis satisfaction, and also they en-gage to allow to him the use of theglebe belonging to the said congrega-tion of Donegal, under proper re-strictions,or the sum of twenty poundsannually, if Mr. McFarquhar shallchoose that rather than the use ofsaid glebe.

They further allow that said annualsalary commence on the First day ofJanuary last, provided that Mr. Mc-Farquhar accept their call, the con-gregation allowing twenty pounds inlieu of the use of the glebe for thecurrent year, and these stipulationsthey allow to be binding on them aslong as Mr. McFarquhar shall con-tinue the orderly minister of said con-gregation.

The Presbytery, having found thatsaid call was orderly prepared andprosecuted, delivered the same to Mr.McFarquhar, who declared his accept-ance of it.

Eleventh day, a. m.—The Presby-tery met according to adjournment P.P. S. Q. S. Ordered to read the min-utes of last Sederent. Messrs. Coop-er, Lang and Creaghead are appointedto attend at Donegal to install Mr.McFarquhar on the first Tuesday afterthe adjournment of Synod, Mr. Langto preach, Mr. Cooper to preside inthat affair.

Twelfth day, 9 o'clock a. m.—Pres-bytery met, except Mr. Wilson andMr. McFarquhar, who had leave to gohome. P. P. S. Q. S.

Minutes of Synod of New York andPhiladelphia.

May 22, 1776—Donegal Presbyteryreport that they have received Rev.Mr McFarquhar from Scotland andlaid the credentials upon which theyreceived him before the Synod, withwhich the Synod being satisfied, Mr.McFarquhar being present took hisseat.

May 21, 1777—From the Presbyteryof Donegal, Rev. Messrs. Robert Coop-er, Colin McFarquhar and James Mar-tin.

Messrs. Robert Smith, Spencer, Mc-Farquhar,with James Thompson,elder,are appointed a committee of overturesto meet in this place to-morrow at 8o'clock a. m., and by adjournment aft-erward as occasion may require.

May 23, 1777—A supplication froma society of Highland Scots of South-land was brought in by the commit-tee of overtures and read, requestingthat the Synod would supply themwith books and appoint Mr. McFar-quhar to preach and administer theGospel ordinances amongst them.

This Synod,taking their request intoconsideration, do order a collection ofbooks to be made throughout theirPresbyteries for these people, and ap-point Mr. McFarquhar to supply themsome time, and administer the Gospelordinances as• he sees proper,and alsoto supply the adjacent vacant congre-gations in Northumberland four Sab-baths, and they order the Presbyteryof Donegal to supply Mr.

McFarquhar's pulpit in the meantime.May 22, 1786.—The Presbytery of

Donegal be divided into two Presby-teries—one to be known as the Pres-bytery of Baltimore, and the other bythe name of the Presbytery of Car-lisle, and to hold their first meetingagreeably to the adjournment of thelate present Donegal.

May 22, 1786—That Rev. Colin Mc-Farquhar, late of the Presbytery ofDonegal, be annexed to the Presby-tery of New Castle.

Arrival of Rev. McFarquhar at Done.gal.

Early in the spring of 1776 Rev.ColinMcFarquhar came to Donegal. Hisfirst home was at the public house ofSamuel Scott, who lived at Big Chick-ies creek. Mr. Scott died in the springof 1776, and left one hundred poundsto Donegal Church. Rev. McFarquharwas a witness to his will. He board-ed with the widow for nine years.Before he came to Donegal, he was atBedford for a few months. When hisfamily came, he purchased severalhundred acres of land from JamesCunningham, between Mt. Joy andSporting Hill. An agreement wasmade between them, but when theland came to be surveyed it seemsthere were many mare acres withinthe described limits in the agreementthan there were supposed to be, andMr. Cunningham refused to executethe deed. Mr. McFarquhar took thecase to the Supreme Court,which com-pelled Mr. Cunningham to make adeed.

A charter was granted to Rev. ColinMcFarquhar, John Baillie, Jas. Baillie,James Anderson, Robert Spear, BriceClark, Samuel Woods, James

Muirhead and Joseph Little as trustees,and their successors, on September11, 1786. They found it necessary tohave a charter in order to sell part oftheir land, which they did immediate-ly on receipt of the official paper.

The congregation of Mr. McFarqu-har was composed of some of thewealthiest landholders in the State,but they were not prompt in payinghis salary,and quite a large amount ofback pay was allowed to accumulate.The congregation agreed to sell all

the glebe lands of 212 acres, reservingbut thirty or forty acres—the amountof money for the sale to JamesMoorehead at $45 for an acre to bepaid to Mr. McFarquhar.

His Prayers Too Long.

Morning and afternoon serviceswere often held in the church, and itwas not an uncommon occurrence forMr. McFarquhar to pray for one hour

, and fifteen minutes. On a certain oc-casion, and when seated upon a logto partake of a lunch with Col. Low-rey, that bluff old man said to him:"Nicodemus, you must make yourprayers a little shorter."

Mr. McFarquhar helped to organizethe Presbyterian Church in Columbiaand a supply in 1805. They worship-ped in private houses and sometimesin the warehouses along the river.He also preached in York, Chance-ford and in the churches of the Cum-berland Valley, by order of the Pres-bytery.

In the history of Franklin and Mar-shall College, by Rev. Dr. Dubbs,Colin McFarquhar, minister in 1807,was named, with others, on a com-mittee "who will from time to timevisit the Franklin Academy and ex-amine the progress of the pupils."

Became a Patriot.One Sunday morning,while the con-

gregation was at worship, an expressrider came to Donegal Church andannounced that Howe's army had leftNew York with the intention of in-vading Pennsylvania. Rev. Mr. Mc-Farquhar had persisted in prayingfor the King, until this Sunday morn-ing, after service, the officers of thechurch called him out, and, under thefamous tree, offered him the alterna-tive of casting his fortune with themor quitting his charge. He promisedfealty to the Revolutionary cause,and

from that time on was loyal to theColonies and a true patriotic andChristian character he displayed inalways keeping to the letter of hisvows of fidelity. As Burke says:"Our Liberty becomes a noble free-dom."

A Graduate of Edinburgh.Mr. McFarquhar came from Gair-

loch, Dumbarton county, Scotland.Gairloch is a lake, a branch of theFirth of Clyde. It is seven mileslong, with a village of the same nameat its head and a summer resort withcottages along its banks—not hotels.Vessels were sent there to adjust com-passes after they were built, until theinvention of Lord Kelvin made it un-necessary.

Mr. McFarquhar was a fine scholar,a graduate of Edinburgh University.During his thirty years' pastorate heconducted a classical school and pre-pared young men for college. Thepresidents of Washington and Prince-ton Colleges said that he was so thor-ough and rigid in his teaching, hisscholars so well prepared in the clas-sics, that they at once took high rankamong the students.

He visited the families which ex-tended more than ten miles from thechurch. He catechised old and young,and kept a complete roll of each fam-ily and members of the congregation.The list numbered 500.

Mr. Samuel Evans says: "I haveseen his translations and marginalnotes of Latin and Greek books usedby him in teaching in Scotland, orwhile he was in college. From thenames and references in one of thesebooks showed he descended from ahighly-educated ancestry, some ofwhom were evidently professors inEdinburgh College. He was a manof wonderful energy and powerfulphysique."

On November 15, 1786. the firstmeeting of the Board of Trustees,constituted by an Act of Assembly,was held at Donegal. It was con-vened by Rev, Colin McFarquhar,those present being Messrs. RobertSpear, John Baillie,Jas. Muirhead,Sam-uel Woods. Brice Clark and JosephLittle. Mr. James Anderson was ab-sent. Mr. McFarquhar was electedpresident, Mr. Joseph Little, secre-tary, and Mr. Samuel Woods, treas-urer. The trustees appointed the fol-lowing persons to collect the minis-ter's salary, due before January,1787:Mr. Robert Spear, Mr. John Baillie,Thomas Baillie, Jr., Mr. Brice Clark,Mr. Samuel Wood, Mr. James Moore-head and Mr. Joseph Little.

On November 25, 1788, Mr. McFar-quhar produced an account againstthe congregation from April, 1784, toApril, 1788, amounting to twentypounds, for keeping the books, astheir clerk. In a receipt dated May7, 1806, he says: "My pastoral laborsin the church at Donegal terminateat the above date, and therefore theabove is a receipt in full for all mypastoral services in said church."

In the Donegal churchyard i 51 agrave marked thus:

In memory ofMrs. Elizabeth McFarquhar, wife of

Rev. Colin McFarquhar Minister of theGospel at Donegal,

who departed this life on the 6th day ofAugust, A. D. 1805. and in the 64th

year of her age.

The death of Mrs, McFarquhar wasa great sorrow to him.He was at thattime seventy-five years of age, and hedecided to give up his charge andlive with his daughter, Mrs. Wilson,in Lancaster, where he remained sev-eral years, when he removed to Ha-gerstown in 1814, to live with hisdaughter, Mrs. D. Cook, where helived until God took him. He was

buried in the Presbyterian Churchthere with the following epitaph:

Here lies the remains ofRev. Colin McFarquhar,

A native of Scotland,30 years Pastor of Presbyterian Church

of Donegal, Lancaster Co., Pa.,who died 27th August, 1822, full of

years, having reached the gage of 93.Also, his daughter, Mrs. Mary Cooke,

who died,August 22, 1820, aged 64 years.

Also, David Cook, Esq.. her husband,who died June 12th, 1821.

Also, their Daughter.Mrs. Eliza C. Boggs,

who died December 4, 1817.

His Remains Reinierred at Donegal.

During the present year the re-mains of Mr. McFarquhar, his wifeand children were removed; fromHagerstown and reinterred at Done-gal. On that occasion Mrs. M. N.Robinson wrote the following poem:

In the blessed peace of GodRests 'neath this• hallowed sod,

Near the church where he of oldGathered men into the fold.

And, as pledge of Love Divine,Reverent gave the Bread and Wine.

Where he sought to point the WayTo the realms of endless day.

Now, within those old walls' shadeHere his mortal form is laid.

Guard it well, oh, sacred sod!In the blessed Peace of God.

A Poem by Sallie Hastings.

Mrs. Sallie Hastings, daughter ofRobert Anderson, of Leacock town-ship, and whose widow later marriedBrice Clark, published a book ofpoems in 1808. Dickson, of Lancas-ter, was the printer. She was an at-tendant of Donegal Church duringthe ministry of Mr. McFarquhar. OnJanuary 4, 1806, she dedicated the fol-lowing poem to

Mrs. Hastings wrote to her mother,at Donegal, Mrs. Brice Clark, fromCross Creek, Washington county, Pa.,where she moved with her sister andfamily as follows:"(In favor of Mr. Elder).

"Cross Creek, Aug. 13, 1804."Dear Mother: I go very little abroad, only

to meeting. There I attend asregu-larly as the church doors are open. Iwill not say it is merely religiontakes me there, believe indeed it ismore for the pleasure I take in hear-ing the eloquent pastor speak thanthe sound divine—but be that as itmay, it is for the pleasure of hear-ing Mr. Marquis alone. To hear himis harmony, though he often gives usthe truth of the law in all its sever-ity. He has before now fairly mademe jump off my seat with terror and

slapping the pulpit. If he wouldonly quit that he would be the sweet-est man in the world, but the peoplehere would not like him if he wouldpreach in moderation. He is thedreadfulest thunder I ever heard.Nothing seems more at variance thanhis preaching and his countenance—one is all terror, talking all sweet-ness and mild persuasion. Scold ashe may, I will serve him. Nay, Icannot help it. He was formed tobe served—it is only giving him hisdues. But you Donegal people wouldnot hear him at all if he would takea fit of sending you to the D—, andthat he would do without any cere-mony for things you would scarcethink you merited, such rough treat-ment.

"Oh,how he would handle your danc-ing and singing, your dressing, andgay conversations, your giddy roundof visits, your taste and refinements,your preparations for company andall the folly of your fashions. I justwish to hear him at you, yet he woulddo it so nicely and with such a gracethat you would love him neverthe-less." Rev. Thomas Marquis was born atOpequon, near Winchester, Va., andwas the most eminent pulpit orator ofhis day. The tones of his voice wereexceedingly musical, hence he wasoften called "The Silver-tongued Mar-quis." He was pastor of the churchat Cross Creek, Washington county,for thirty-two years, from 1794 to1826.

In a paper read before the Iris Clubof Lancaster, Pa., by Hon. W. U.Hensel, the title "A Literary GrassWidow," in which he reviews Mrs.Hastings' literary productions, hesays of her: "A star that flickeredfeebly in the constellation of localpoesy and then was lost to the liter-

ary view—a flower that blushed notaltogether unseen, but whose fra-grance was wasted on an unsympa-thetic air." Do you think so?

The Death of Rev. McFarquhar.

In searching the files of the Lan-caster Journal since writing thesketch I found the following:

"Departed this life on the 28th ofAugust at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. David Cook, Hagerstown,Md., in the ninety-first year of hisage, Colin McFarquhar, minister ofthe Gospel. The deceased was bornin the Highlands of Scotland in 1732,and had the charge there of two con-gregations for thirteen or fourteenyears. He emigrated to this coun-try in the year 1775, accepted acall to Donegal congregation, Lancas-ter county, Pa., and continued theirminister for upwards of thirty years.During forty-eight years since hecame to this country he has neverbeen known to be sick more thanthree days and retained 'his 'senses tothe last."

On the ship with Rev. McFarquharin the passage to America in 1774came Donald Cameron and his son,John, Simon Cameron and his wife,with her sister, Ann McKenzie, whowere the ancestors of Hon. SimonCameron and his son, J. Donald Cam-eron, who are so closely identifiedwith the history of our county andState, not forgetting they, too, haverational fame.

As a tribute to these emigrantsfrom Bonny Scotland and their de-scendants and their prominence inthe religious and political life of ournation, I quote the following: "A Scotwill always help a Scot. Centuriesof struggle and hardship have taughtthe Scottish people to be in all

changes of fortune and down to thegates of death loyal and loving oneanother." To use the beautiful phrase ofRobert Louis Stevenson: "No amountof world-wandering can make themforget their national traditions. Evenif their little homeland were to berolled out flat, it would be smallerthan Indiana; yet to Scottish eyesthere is no land like it."
