Y ou need to pay the hospital 3,000

pesos before we can admit her,”

the social worker told parents of

an 18-month-old baby girl who had been

unconscious for days. They’d brought her

to the Mexico City Children’s Hospital

penniless, hoping for a miracle.

Mom locked eyes with Dad. Their eyes

seemed to cry out, “ We have no money!”

The family of four had just moved, and

Dad wouldn’t get paid for another week.

“I will pay,” the doctor said. “If you

have no money, I’ll cover the cost.”

Dr. González Galnares made hospital-

ization possible, and it was he who gave

me treatment that brought me back to

life.

My doctor reminds me of God, who

can heal us from our illnesses and is also

able to save us from our sinful debt by

paying with Jesus’ blood.

God can make impossible things hap-

pen for you. He can help you find things

you’ve lost. He can even help you be kind

when you don’t feel like it.

Old Testament Bible Book

Math ChallengeBy Melissa Yeagle

Below is a chart assigning each letter of the alphabet to a number. By adding up the letters, you can assign a score to each book of the Bible.

For example: j= 10 o= 15 b= 2 Add them together, and Job’s score is 27.

Can you guess these books of the Bible by their score?

1. _ _ _ _= 50 Amos, Ezra, Ruth, or Joel?

2. _ _ _ _ _= 48Exodus, Jonah, Micah, or Nahum?

3. _ _ _ _ _ _= 47Daniel, Haggai, Isaiah, or Psalms?

4. _ _ _ _ _ _ _= 40Genesis, Malachi, Numbers, or Obadiah?

5. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _= 66Habakkuk, Jeremiah, Nehemiah, or Proverbs?

Here’s a strange thing: if you ask someone to name their favorite number, they often choose seven. There’s something special about that number. There

are seven notes in the musical scale and seven colors in a rainbow,* and sailors sail the seven seas.

Seven is also a favorite number in the Bible:

Creation week was seven days long (see Genesis 2:1-3).

God told Noah to take seven of each clean animal in the ark (see Genesis 7:2).

Then Noah waited seven days in the ark before the rain began (see Genesis 7:10).

In the dream Pharaoh described for Joseph, he saw seven fat cows and seven skinny cows (see Genesis 41:1-3).

Naaman took seven dips in the Jordan River before his leprosy disappeared (see 2 Kings 5:14).

Page 5: Don’t Mess With a Monkey · 7/11/2020  · Monkey True Stories Pointing to Jesus guidemagazine.org 07 • 11 • 20 Mrs. Bennett’s Kindness Award VERA WASN’T BEING MEAN Ambushed!

On the seventh day, the Israelites marched around Jericho seven times (see Hebrews 11:30).

And when you get to the last book of the Bible, Revelation, you’ll find that it is jam-packed with sevens. You’ll find seven churches, and the same number of lampstands, stars, plagues, and trumpets.

So you probably won’t be surprised to see the number seven pop up in God’s house. Look at these examples from the Bible sanctuary.

The solid gold lampstand in the Holy Place had seven lamps that burned olive oil from evening until morning. The golden lampstand was looted by soldiers and taken to Rome in a.d. 70.

It has since disappeared.

Once a year, on the Day of Atonement, the high priest would dip his fingers in the blood of a sacrifice and sprinkle it seven times, no more and no less, before the golden ark.

The Day of Atonement took place during the seventh month of each year.

*red, orange,

yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet

This is just the beginning of the many cool things you can discover in the sanctuary. Be sure to watch for the extra-special sanctuary “escape room” issue coming to your Sabbath School on September 5!

A re you sure we’re on the right road, Dad?” Ethan asked. “It seems as if

we’ve been driving forever with-out seeing any other cars, signs, buildings, or anything.”

Ethan’s dad was hunched forward with a tight grip on the steering wheel. “The guide warned me that the wild game reserve was in the middle of no-where. I just wish we would have gotten there before dark.”

The sun had set early in South Africa. By 6:00 p.m. it was as black as midnight. Ethan squinted, straining his eyes, hoping to see something as their car’s head-lights pierced the darkness ahead of them.

When Ethan’s dad had been assigned to go to South Africa for a research project, Ethan was ex-

cited to go with him on the 10-day trip. His dad had been busy work-ing hard all week near the capital city while Ethan had stayed inside the building near his dad. South Africa was too dangerous of a place for him to wander out on his own.

But now it was the weekend, and they had fun plans to explore the area together. They were headed to a wild game reserve that was known for its lions. If only they could have arrived there while it was still daylight. But dinner had taken longer than expected. And then his dad had forgetten his laptop in the restau-rant, so they had needed to turn around and go back for it. Now they were traveling in the dark.

“ We should be getting close,” his dad said. “Keep a sharp look-

out for the gate. The guide said that the lodge is several miles be-yond the gate, so we won’t be able to see any lights from the road.”

“I think there might be some-thing up ahead,” Ethan said. “It looks like a chain-link fence.”

His dad let out a sigh. “Good. That must be it. I’m sure the en-tire game reserve is surrounded by a fence.”

As they got closer, Ethan noticed that the high fence was topped with barbed wire. “That’s to keep the lions inside, right?” Ethan asked. Before his dad could answer, they saw the gate. “ Wow, it’s huge!” exclaimed Ethan.

His dad slowed the car, turned onto the dirt road, and stopped in front of the heavy gate. “How are we supposed to get inside?” Ethan asked.

“The guide gave me a spe-cial entrance code that should automatically open the gate.” He pulled a slip of paper from his pocket. “Here it is. Wait in the car while I punch the numbers into the machine.” A moment later the heavy gate screeched and slowly started to slide open. Ethan’s dad got back into the car. Then he glanced in his rearview mirror. “Oh, no!” he gasped.

Ethan whipped his head around. Behind them, waiting in the darkness across the road, was an SUV. Ethan and his dad hadn’t noticed it before, but now

its engine was running, and its headlights flashed brightly in the night. “ What’s going on?” Ethan asked.

“No one else should be out here, so I’m afraid they’re thugs, Ethan. They were obviously wait-ing for us to open the gate. Now they’ll probably follow us inside.”

“Then what will they do?” Ethan asked.

His dad shook his head. “Noth-ing good. And they might harm the people at the lodge as well.”

Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest. His hands shook. He had never been so frightened in his entire life. Almost without think-ing, he immediately started praying out loud. “Dear God, we desperately need Your help! Please protect us—and the people at the lodge, too.”

The SUV headlights shone in their rear window as it pulled up close behind them. Ethan cringed as it revved its engine.

As soon as the gate opened far enough, his dad drove inside. Ethan could hardly breathe while watching to see what would hap-pen next.

The SUV revved its engine again. Then, suddenly, it turned back onto the main road and disappeared into the night. As the heavy gate slid shut behind them, he heard his dad whisper, “Thanks be to God.”

After driving for some time

D ad had done it again—lost something.

I could hear the conver-sation my parents were having in the kitchen.

“Did you leave it at Bible study last night?” my mother asked.

“No.”“Are you sure?”“ What about the car?” I heard

my mother ask. Her voice was fading as she walked down the back hall toward the garage.

I walked into the kitchen and found Dad at the table finishing up his breakfast, a worried look on his face. He was wearing his

glasses and his work badges, so those weren’t the missing items.

“ What did you lose?” I asked.“My computer bag,” he said.

His worried eyes met mine. “Did you do anything with my com-puter after we came home last night?”

“No, I didn’t, but Mom will find it.” I pulled a box of cereal from the pantry and joined him at the table, filling a bowl and reaching for the milk.

“It isn’t in the car,” Dad said as he rested his worried face in his hands. “I’m afraid it’s been stolen.”

Shock made me pause with the pitcher of milk midair. We lived in a nice neighborhood. No one had ever broken into our home since we moved there.

“It hasn’t been stolen,” my mother said, returning from the garage. She wasn’t holding a com-puter bag in her hand, though.

“The thing is . . . ” Dad paused, shaking his head. “My bag of ca-bles is also missing. I can believe I might have laid my computer bag down somewhere, but I never even took my bag of cables out of the car.”

“ We have to find it then,” my mother said, getting down to business. “Everyone take a few minutes and look. It isn’t as if it’s a small thing.”

We all spent the next 10 min-utes walking through the house, looking behind doors and under tables, desks, and chairs. My mother even unzipped a couple unused computer bags, trying to find what we were looking for. Every minute that passed brought more worry and concern to Dad’s face.

Dad heaved a frustrated sigh. “I have to get to work. I’m already late.”

“ Wait,” Mom said. “ We need to pray. When we come to the end of ourselves, we need to look to God. We probably should have already done so.”

She drew us together, her arm

stealing around my shoulders and my Dad’s waist.

“I am afraid someone took it out of the back of my car before I pulled it into the garage.” Dad sounded worried.

“I can’t imagine,” Mom said. “How long did you leave the car in the driveway?”

“Maybe 20 minutes.” I suddenly felt guilty. Dad

hadn’t parked in the garage the night before, because I had left the lawn mower in the middle of his parking area. The thought that a thief had been waiting to steal something out of the back of our car was quite unsettling.

My parents bowed their heads. My mother started to pray; she was so calm and sure. Dad was still very worried and upset.

“ We know that You know where that computer bag is,” Mom prayed. Her words were confi-dent, as though she knew God was listening to every word. “ We just can’t remember where we put it, and we need Your help. We really do. You’ve seen us running around, and we’re at the end of

Page 13: Don’t Mess With a Monkey · 7/11/2020  · Monkey True Stories Pointing to Jesus guidemagazine.org 07 • 11 • 20 Mrs. Bennett’s Kindness Award VERA WASN’T BEING MEAN Ambushed!

our wits. We don’t know what to do, where to look, or what to think. Maybe in the whole scheme of things, it isn’t that important or critical, but You care. You care about us and our troubles, and You’ve told us to come to You boldly with all sorts of requests, and so this is our request. Help us! Please open our minds and show us where to look.”

Dad prayed also. As he prayed, some of the worry drained out of his voice, and afterward he hugged and kissed us both and left for work. My mother had me clear the table while she put the dishes into the dishwasher.

The next thing we knew, the front doorbell was ringing. We both went to open it, and there was Dad with his computer bag in one hand and his bag of cables in the other!

“ You found them!” I screamed.My mother’s face glowed.

“ Where? Where were they?”Dad looked a little sheepish,

but he was also glowing. “Right here,” he said, indicating the front porch. “I set them down while unlocking the front door last night. I had forgotten that we had come in through the front door.”

Mom threw her arms around his neck, and they stood there hugging while I started to get embarrassed. “He answered our prayers,” she said.

“He did,” Dad replied. I was driving out of the driveway, and I had this . . . not even a thought, really . . . more like a tickle. I stopped the car, got out, and started walking around to the front of the house. I didn’t even know why I was walking there—and there they were.”

“Not stolen,” Mom said. “Out-side all night, and not stolen.”

“Did I just experience God whispering?” Dad asked. They were still hugging. I decided to get involved and wormed in be-tween them. Mom looked down at me with warm eyes and said. “Don’t ever forget, son. He hears. He listens. He cares.”

“And He answers,” I added.I was awestruck when I stopped

to think about it. Of all the hous-es in our neighborhood, the God of the universe had been with us, listening to our prayers and com-ing down to help my dad find his misplaced computer bag.

“Did I just experience God

whispering?” Dad asked.

V era!* Rose! Can I play with you?”Vera walked faster. This was one disadvantage of going to a

one-room school. Where else would a first grader be pester-ing a seventh grader to play with her during recess?

“ We’re not playing!” Vera turned her head slightly as she shouted. “Rose and I are practicing for tonight’s Pathfinder skit.”

“Oh, I love skits!” Audrey caught up to the two girls and tugged at the script the girls were reading from. “Can I help?”

“No!” Vera pulled the paper away. “Go play with someone else!”Vera was relieved when Mrs. Bennett blew her whistle, causing

Audrey to race for the door.“I should win the kindness award for putting up with her!” Vera

told Rose as they joined the kids in line. Every day Mrs. Bennett would choose one student who had shown

kindness during the day. That student would get to pick a book for the class to read together. Vera loved choosing new stories, but the younger kids liked to have the same books read over and over.

“I hope you get the kindness award!” Rose affirmed. “If one of the little kids gets it, we’ll have to listen to Amelia Bedelia for the third time this week!”

Vera wasn’t being mean, so why didn’t she get

K ids, I want to talk about kindness.” Mrs. Bennett crossed her arms in front of her as she spoke.

“ When I hear one student begging to play with another, and that other student keeps saying no—neither student is getting the kindness award. When somebody asks to play with you, the kind thing is to let them, and when somebody—”

“But they should just go play with somebody else!” Vera inter-rupted.

“ Yes, Vera,” Mrs. Bennett replied as she turned to face her, “that’s what I was going to say. When somebody says they don’t want you to play with them, the kind thing is to find something else to do.”

“But you just said I had to let them play with me!” Vera could feel her face getting red with anger.

“No, I didn’t say you had to,” Mrs. Bennett walked closer to Vera’s desk. “I said that would be the kind thing to do.”

“I shouldn’t have to be told I’m mean just because I don’t want to play with a little kid!” Vera slumped in her seat.

Page 16: Don’t Mess With a Monkey · 7/11/2020  · Monkey True Stories Pointing to Jesus guidemagazine.org 07 • 11 • 20 Mrs. Bennett’s Kindness Award VERA WASN’T BEING MEAN Ambushed!

16 | GUIDE | guidemagazine.org

“I didn’t say you were being mean,” Mrs. Bennett’s voice sounded peacefully calm compared to Vera’s outbursts. “I said you weren’t be-ing kind. There’s a difference.”

“But meanness is the opposite of kindness!” Rose came to her friend’s defense.

“Ah, but just because you’re not being kind doesn’t mean you’re being mean.” Mrs. Bennett turned and walked back to her desk as she spoke. “If I walk past a homeless person and don’t give them a sandwich, am I being mean?”

Some of the kids shook their heads tentatively as Mrs. Bennett continued. “Now, if I taunted the person, that would be mean! But if I don’t give them a sandwich, that’s not mean. However, I’m also not being kind. Giving the person something to eat would be a kind thing to do. Likewise, if you don’t play with someone who wants to play with you, you’re not necessarily being mean—but you’re also not being kind. And Jesus wants us to follow His example by being uncommonly kind to others. That’s what we’re trying to practice here at school.

“OK, so for our kindness award, I’m going to pick somebody who was playing nicely without either begging or blocking anyone—Ben!”

Vera rolled her eyes as the first grader popped up from his seat and ran directly to the tattered Amelia Bedelia book. At this point, the only way she’d make it through the day would be to tune out.

V era was so tuned out that she didn’t even notice when Mrs. Bennett’s phone rang.

“ Vera.” Mrs. Bennett tapped her on the shoulder. “ Your mom’s on the phone. She’s not feeling well.” Mrs. Bennett handed the phone to Vera.

“Honey, you’ll need to go home with Audrey’s mom tonight.” Mom’s voice sounded shaky. “I’m not feeling well enough to pick you up.”

“But what about Pathfinders?” Vera could think only about her skit. “Are you going to feel good enough to bring me to Pathfinders?”

“No, honey, I’m so sorry.”“But I have to go to Pathfinders. We’re performing a skit tonight!”“I have an idea.” Mrs. Bennett reached her hand toward the phone,

and Vera reluctantly gave it to her. Mrs. Bennett walked to the far side of the classroom as she talked quietly. A few minutes later she was back.

“OK, it’s all worked out,” Mrs. Bennett announced as she returned. “ Vera, your mom says you can stay with me. I’ll order some pizza for you and take you home when Pathfinders is over.”

Vera sat quietly, not sure what to think about Mrs. Bennett. Up until a few minutes ago she had been steaming mad at her, but now that same woman had sacrificed supper with her own family just so Vera could make it to Pathfinders.

“ Y-y-you didn’t have to do this,” Vera stuttered when the pizza ar-rived.

“ You’re right,” Mrs. Bennett said with a twinkle in her eye. “And if I hadn’t stayed with you, that wouldn’t have been mean of me, either. But staying with you is the kind thing to do.”

Vera ate quietly. She had a lot of planning to do. Certainly she could find a way to share the uncommon type of kindness that Mrs. Bennett had just demonstrated. And if she was successful, maybe, just maybe, she could have a break from listening to Amelia Bedelia during reading time.

Certainly Vera could find a way to share the uncommon type of kindness that Mrs. Bennett

had just demonstrated.

The Junior class is going to the zoo next Sunday!” I grabbed my mom as soon

as we left the church. “Can I go? I might see a monkey! I’ve always wanted—”

“ Youth class is included. Can I go too?” My sister, Ashleigh, interrupted. “Hey, look, there’s Ryan!” Ashleigh interrupted her-self. “Hey, Ryan,” she hollered out the window, “are you going next Sunday?”

Ryan peered through his glasses and grunted a yeah. Then he tossed his head with swag as he ran his hand through his wavy brown hair.

Ashleigh swooned, “Isn’t he the most chill dude ever?”

Joy just wanted to touch the monkey’s fuzzy foot.

“OK,” Mom said as she started the car, “put up your window, Ashleigh. It’s time to get home.” Then she turned to me. “ Yes, you girls can go.”

Orange still glowed in the Tennessee sky as we met in the church parking lot

Sunday morning. All I could think about was holding my monkey.

“ What do you wanna see first, Ryan?” Ashleigh gushed to her crush when he arrived at the church.

“Uh, I dunno. Seeing a lion would be cool,” he said as he stared into the distance. Then his friends rode up on their long boards and swooped him away from my sister. “Gotta go,” he said, smiling back at her as he rode off toward the bus. “They’re loading up.”

The ride to the zoo was viva-cious! All the kids were laughing, talking, and joking. Even Mr. Roy made us laugh a few times. We shared snacks and sang songs and arrived at the zoo earlier than it seemed that the trip would take!

“OK, here’s how the day will go down,” Mr. Roy explained as he handed the tickets to the older kids. “Those of you in Youth will be teamed up with one or two of the earliteens or juniors. Look out for them and make sure we all meet back at the fountain for lunch. Ashleigh, you and Ryan will be responsible for your sister,” he

assignments, because this perfect day was now blighted. Oh, boy, here we go, I thought to myself. How is it that Mr. Roy doesn’t know they’ll be a couple of sloths talking and lollygagging?

I raised my hand. “Uh, can I get someone else, please?” I asked.

“No, we’re keeping the groups as they are. Listen up, everyone. Stay together and follow the rules. OK, have fun, and I’ll see you at the fountain at noon,” he said as he watched the groups he’d assigned enter through the gate and hand in their tickets.

Sure enough, Ashleigh and Ryan poked along.

“Come on,” I objected. “ We have to get to the monkeys soon so I can—”

“I know, I know. Just chill,” Ashleigh responded. “ We’re gonna see the lions first because that’s what Ryan and I wanna see. Then we’ll take you to see your monkeys, OK? There’s plenty of time before lunch, and this map shows that the lion and monkey exhibits are right beside each

the lions. I pulled at Ashleigh’s arm.

“Chill!” she hissed, getting back to her conversation with Ryan. I crept away slowly to-ward the monkey cages.

Looking through the cage, I noticed a tiny baby was clinging to a black spider monkey’s leg! The sun reflected off their ebony fur. The bottom part of the monkey’s foot—which was gripping the bars—looked like the softest leather I’d ever seen. I was afraid I’d never even get to touch a monkey if I didn’t make a move now. Glancing back at Ashleigh and Ryan, I realized they had no clue I’d even gone.

But there was a rail between me and the monkeys that said in large letters, “DO NOT CROSS THIS POINT.” I thought about what Mr. Roy had said. I reasoned that to simply touch a monkey was not irresponsible. After all, what could possibly happen?

I slowly approached the cage. I cooed and sang softly to the mon-key and marveled at how soft that cute little foot felt as I stroked it with one finger. Then I heard an unearthly shriek, and a very long arm shot out. The mama grabbed my hair and began banging my head against the bars of her cage,

screaming the whole time.“Help!” I cried.Ryan looked over, saw what was

happening, and ran for help.Ashleigh just doubled over with

laughter, almost to the point of not breathing.

“Hey! It’s not funny! Help me; this hurts!” I yelled at her.

Meanwhile, mama monkey was not giving up. I began to wonder if she was trying to kill me as she banged my head back and forth on the bars. It was starting to make a knot on my head.

“ What if a guard arrests you?” Ashleigh spurted out the words between laughs. “ What if Mr. Roy sees you, or someone puts this

REAL-TIME FAITH STORY

24 | GUIDE | guidemagazine.org

Sue knew she wasn’t supposed to get into someone else’s belongings, but she just wanted to see the display of her mother’s colorful scarves. Her favorite,

the multicolored blue silk, had so many blues, and the silver threads in it shimmered when it moved. Sue had reached up just to touch it, but then found herself twirling around with the scarf flowing behind her. “Rip-p-p-p.” Sue stopped and looked at the scarf. There was a huge gash in the once-beautiful scarf. Sue decided the best thing she could do was get rid of the destroyed scarf and let Mother think the scarf had been lost. Even though it has been many years since this happened and Sue is a mother herself, she thinks and dreams about that scarf. She is still afraid of what her mother would say and do if she ever found out the truth. Sue carries the guilt of disobeying, being deceitful, and lying. She wonders if the terrible headaches she has had over the years are the result of her guilt and fear.—Kathleen Sowards.

When we sin, two things usually happen. One is that we become afraid. We are afraid of our sin becoming known and what the consequences will be. And the other, we try to hide what we have done, and sometimes we go so far as to lie to try to cover up our sin. Then we try to bury it. We

don’t want to think about what we’ve done, and we don’t want to deal with the guilt of the sin or the hiding of it.

Jesus pointed out our basic problem to a Pharisee named Nicodemus. He said, “Light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed” (John 3:19, 20).

Some people will be lost because they turned away from the light. They are afraid of being exposed. Guilt can never be solved until we acknowledge that we have sinned. Guilt is not to be swept under the carpet. It is a sign pointing us to the cure. People have a chronic problem with guilt only if they keep ignoring it.

The purpose of guilt is to lead us to the one who takes away the sins of the world (see John 1:29). It is to lead us to the Savior, who delivers us from condemnation. Today, let the guilt of your heart lead you to the Savior of your soul. Don’t deny it. Acknowledge it and flee to Him.”—Mark Finley, On Solid Ground, pp. 239, 240.

Have you ever done something that you were afraid to admit you did? Did you feel guilty? Have you confessed and made right the wrong you did? What was the result?

NO CONDEMNATION

Memory Text: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).

Our Beliefs, no. 9, The Life, Death, and Resurrec-tion of Christ: “In Christ’s life of perfect obedience to God’s will, His suffering, death, and resurrection, God provided the only means of atonement for human sin, so that those who by faith accept

this atonement may have eternal life, and the whole creation may better understand the infinite and holy love of the Creator. This perfect atonement vindicates the righteousness of God’s law and the graciousness of His character; for it both condemns our sin and provides for our forgiveness.”

Read Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 115, 116.

SABBATH Read this week’s Real-Time Faith story above.

Poor Richard, thought George. No one likes him, and every-one picks on him. He wondered if Richard felt bullied.

The next day George and his friends went to a festival in the park. There were lots of people, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. George saw a large group of people standing on a hill looking down the other side at a pond. He and his friends went to see what everyone was looking at. At the bottom of the hill next to the pond they saw a group of boys teasing, pushing, and tormenting Richard. Richard would

look up at the group of people and call out for someone to help him. But no one did. Put yourself in George’s place. You are watching a group of people terrifying someone unable to defend himself. Watching the attack, you are overcome with feelings of fear, anger over the injustice, and a sense of duty to do something about it. What do you do? Do you step out of the crowd to help? Would you feel guilty for not helping? Would you allow fear to affect your actions? What holds do guilt and fear have on your life?

Jesus is our Savior and Redeemer. Every person, other than Jesus, who has ever lived and will ever live on this earth has sinned. And because of our sins we carry guilt, shame, and often fear of our sin being found out. But Jesus has paid the price for our sin. And if we accept His gift of grace, we are forgiven.

How can you let go of any sins you are guilty of hiding?________________________________________________________________________

TUESDAY Read Psalm 56:3, 4.

There are 530 recognized phobias in the world. That translates into a lot of scared people. People have fears of many different kinds—from water to fire to French culture. Maybe you don’t have a huge debilitating phobia, maybe you do. But something everyone feels at times is guilt. Guilt has a way of casting a shadow on our lives.

Guilt and fear have plagued humanity since the beginning. Adam and Eve hid from God in the garden because they felt guilty for what they had done. Abraham lied to Pharaoh because he was afraid he would kill him and take Sarah.

There is only one way to fight these two emotions—trust. Complete trust in Christ. Because only He has the power to forgive and relieve guilt. The Bible says, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy. 1:7, NLT).* Use that spirit; don’t hide behind a dark cloud of guilt and fear. Trust God and use the power He has given you.

THURSDAY Read Psalm 23.

FRIDAY Read 1 John 4:18.

Review the memory text. As a Christian, you know God is watching and protecting you always. You’ve heard Psalm 23 read again and again. You know

forgiveness is freely given to all who ask. Yet feelings of guilt and fear can have such a hold on your life. You hear terrible things on the news, and suddenly you’re scared. You do something wrong and feel guilty for weeks. Wouldn’t it be better simply to trust God to help and protect you? Wouldn’t it be less stressful just to ask for forgiveness? It’s that simple!

Someone came up with the idea of “disposable guilt bags.” All you had to do to get rid of guilt was to place the bag over your mouth, breathe deep, exhale all your guilt into the bag, and throw the bag away! The amazing thing is that 2,500 kits of “disposable guilt bags” sold for $2.50 per kit. Is it possible to dispose of guilt this way? The issue of guilt is huge, and it is not something we can fix by blowing into a bag or doing anything else on our own. It is only through Jesus that we can be forgiven and our guilt removed so we can be clean and new.

Do you feel guilty about something? This week, open your heart to Jesus, your best friend. Share your deepest fears with Him. Give your guilt and fears to Jesus.

Unscramble the following Bible verse and answer the following questions. The Scripture passage is from the New International Version.

“Ambushed,” from p. 8

along the bumpy dirt road, they spotted the welcoming lights of the lodge. Ethan’s dad let out a huge sigh of relief as he parked the car. “I’m proud of you for how well you handled that scary situa-tion, Ethan. You stayed calm and did the most important thing—praying for God’s help.”

“I sure didn’t feel very calm,”

Ethan admitted. “But you know how we’re always reading in the Bible that we can call on God for help? Well, when I knew we were in big trouble, it just seemed like the right thing to do.”

His dad nodded. “It cer-tainly was.” Then he opened his car door. “Come on, let’s go inside.”

“Don’t Mess With a Monkey,” from p. 21online? Hey, where’s my phone? This’ll go viral!”

Now I had new motivation to be free, and realized that help wouldn’t come soon enough. I grabbed my hair and pulled back so mama monkey couldn’t keep banging my head. Then I began to separate as much of it as I could. Finally, only a small amount that I couldn’t pry away remained tightly grasped. Sensing the urgency, I ripped out that small part of my hair to get free. Strangely, that hurt less than the banging did. Running away, I joined Ashleigh, where I was supposed to be.

“Ashleigh, why are you still laughing?” I gasped.“Look!” she panted, trying to breathe through her laugh—which

was now even harder than before.Looking back toward the monkeys, I saw the baby had made a

volleyball out of the hair I had left behind, and was happily tossing it in the air. It was too much for Ashleigh, who was still having fits of laughter. People had gathered and were trying to figure out whose hair was entertaining the baby.

“Come on, we gotta get out of here,” I said as I pulled my laughing sister with me. Thankfully, Ashleigh and Ryan saw how embarrassed I was, and didn’t tell anyone what had happened. Every now and then on the ride home, though, Ashleigh would toss up an imaginary ball and keel over with laughter.

I knew I would never live this one down. More important, I realized that sometimes when you’re warned about something and reason your way through it, you may not expect the bad that can come. I could never again say “what could possibly happen” with the same confidence I had that day!

By the time Satan was finished attacking Job, this man had lost every-

thing—his home, his livestock, his wealth, his children—and now his health was gone. He was covered with oozing, pain-ful, smelly sores.

One day three of Job’s friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, came to visit him in the city dump, where he sat all day. For a week they all sat together silently. The three friends fol-lowed the custom of the time and waited for Job to speak first.

Finally Job said, “May the day of my birth perish. . . . That

day—may it turn to darkness” (Job 3:3, 4).* “ Why did I not perish at birth, and die?” (verse 11).

Eliphaz couldn’t help blurt-ing out, “If someone ventures a word with you, will you be impatient? But who can keep from speaking? Think how you have instructed many, how you have strengthened feeble hands. Your words have sup-ported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees. But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dis-mayed” (Job 4:2-5). “Blessed is the one whom God corrects; so

Have you ever felt that your whole world was falling apart and that even those closest to you were against you? And to

make things worse, you felt that everyone was watching you? Welcome to Job’s world.

do not despise the discipline of the Almighty” (Job 5:17).

“How painful are honest words!” exclaimed Job. “But what do your arguments prove? Do you mean to correct what I say, and treat my desperate words as wind?” (Job 6:25, 26).

Bildad chimed in, “Does God pervert justice? Does the Almighty pervert what is right? When your children sinned against him, he gave them over to the penalty of their sin. But if you will seek God earnestly and plead with the Almighty, if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your prosperous state. Your begin-nings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be” (Job 8:3-7).

“He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea. . . . He per-forms wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that can-not be counted,” replied Job (Job 9:8-10). “How then can I dispute with him? . . . How can I find words to argue with him? He is not a mere mortal like me that I might answer him” (verses 14-32).

“Are all these words to go un-answered?” questioned Zophar (Job 11:2). “If you put away the sin that is in your hand and al-low no evil to dwell in your tent,

then, free of fault, you will lift up your face; you will stand firm and without fear. You will surely forget your trouble, recalling it only as waters gone by” (verses 14-16).

Job replied, “Keep silent and let me speak; then let come to me what may. . . . Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” (Job 13:13-15).

In spite of his pain and his friends’ reproving words Job remained faithful to God. He found the strength to affirm: “I know that my redeemer lives, and that in the end he will stand on the earth” (Job 19:25).

The three old friends retreated into silence. A younger man named Elihu had listened to what was being said. Because of his age, he had to wait until every- one else finished speaking.

“Are God’s consolations not enough for you,” he questioned, “words spoken gently to you? . . . What are mortals, that they could be pure? (Job 15:11-14).

None of these men under-stood what had happened between God and Satan. Each one understood only a little about God, and even what they knew they didn’t completely understand. But God knew them and loved them. He knew that He would be able to help them understand more of the picture at the right time.
