The swaying grasses and gentle hills of rural South Dako- ta welcomed Donald Wayne Metcalf into this world on June 26, 1956. Growing up in Red Scaffold, he spent a great deal of his younger years on John and Bertha Hump's ranch down on Cherry Creek, where he learned to speak fluent Lakota, hunt for deer, and developed his love for riding horses. He learned how to put a good handle on a horse and how to handle livestock from his uncles. "Donald Duck" attended school in Red Scaffold and Ea- gle Butte and in 1974, he joined the US Marine Corps where he served his country with honor and reverence. He moved to the Seattle, WA area in 1979 where he was a butcher for Bar-S Foods, where he became an avid bow- ler, he coached a softball team to many tournament victo- ries, and drove truck for Mayflower. He made peace with the mountains and Pacific Ocean, however, he longed for the land he grew up on. In 1991, he left the West coast and headed home. Upon returning home, "Uncle Donnie" lived life on the highway for a time seeing most of the continental US on eighteen wheels, eventually settling down to drive school bus for the Tiospaye Topa School while living in White Horse, he became an active member of the Episcopal congrega- tion. Affectionately called "Grandpa Don"Don was very active in the Episcopal church. Don was Sargent of Arms of the Niobrara Council since 2004 to date. He was elected to Standing Committee from 2009-2013. Then he was appointed to sit on Diocesan Council 2013 by Bishop John to date. Don was on the TEC board 2013 to present and was elected to General Convention Deputy 2010-2021. Don was Itanchan for the Cheyenne River mission 2004-2016 and was elected to Brad Hauffs advisory board for Winter Talk 2020. Don was a man of great integrity and spoke aloud what was on his mind and heart. He loved listening to country music, cracking jokes, enjoyed chatting about a game of football or basketball, and had stories on top of stories that he liked to share with every- one. He always offered a helping hand, he thrived on giving to others, and shared his love for God, being a man of action in showing compassion for others. He was a man of strong will and held a strong love for family, friends, and human kind in general. He made friends everywhere he went. On Sunday, August 16, 2020, "Uncle Donnie" was out at Gunnville Ranch relaxing and catching up with friends. As he looked out across the country, he said out loud, "It real- ly is peaceful here..." and quietly went onto his next journey. He had a profound effect on everyone he met and the amount of friends he met are too numerous to mention. Donald is preceded in death by grandparents, John and Bertha Hump; parents, Stanley and Charlotte (Garfield) Metcalf; brother, Francis Metcalf; daughter, Shilo Metcalf; niece, MaryLou Little Star; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, and good friends. He is survived by sisters, Marlene Little Star and Laura High Bear; daughter, Dawn (Tina) Metcalf; grandchildren, Jacob, Isaac, Samuel, Shiloh Detert; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, and good friends. Please accept our apologies for anyone we might have missed. With a life as vast as Donnie's, it's difficult to capture all of the events and all of the friends and acquaintanc- es he made. We know he loved you all. In Loving Memory of: June 26, 1956 August 16, 2020 Donald Wayne Metcalf Tatanka Wanbli Bull Eagle

A Cowboy’s Prayer Oh Lord, I’ve never lived where churches grow.

I loved creation better as it stood that day you finished it so long ago

And looked upon your work and called it good. I know that others find you in the light

That’s sifted down through tinted window panes, And yet I seem to feel You near tonight In this dim, quiet starlight on the plains.

I thank You, Lord, that I am placed so well,

That You have made my freedom so complete; That I'm no slave to whistle, clock or bell, Nor weak eyed prisoner of wall and street,

Just let me live my life as I’ve begun And give me work that’s open to the sky; Make me a pardner of the wind and sun, And I won’t ask a life that’s soft or high.

Let me be easy on the man that’s down; Let me be square and generous with all,

I’m careless sometimes, Lord, when I’m in town, But never let’em say I’m mean or small Make me as big and open as the plains,

As honest as the hoss between my knees, Clean as the wind that blows behind the rains, Free as the hawk that circles down the breeze!

Forgive me, Lord, if sometimes I forget, You know about the reasons that are hid,

You understand the things that gall and fret; You know me better than my mother did,

Just keep an eye on all that’s done and said And right me, sometimes, when I turn aside, And guide me on the long, dim trail ahead

That stretches upward toward the Great Divide.
