Role of Spirituality in an Organization

The faculty to differentiate between right or

wrong enables a person to make a prudent

choice of those natural disciplines which areconducive to progress, whereas with the help o

organizational skill one carries this choice to

realization by working and making others work

    accordingly. Organization skill has many

    manifestations .Systematic programming o

food habits, physical labor and periods of rest

provide one the benefits of a long and and

healthy life. Man is expected to appreciate the

significance of this skill and develop and utilize

    this unusual gift of nature.

Being competent is not important unless

one is able to utilize the competence

judiciously. The stick in a matchbox has a

tremendous potential for ignition, but onlythose can light it who know the process o

lightening. In absence of an organized system,

in spite of availability of all logistics, rather

than making progress, one finds it difficult to

maintain even the existing status. Like light and

darkness the sequence of prosperity and

adversity too depends to certain extent on

    environment. However, notwithstanding the

environment, a virtue which results in better

capability of production is known as efficiency

of organization i.e. competence for proper

organization of available resources. It would

not be unjustified to assign this attribute a top

priority in the affairs of material world. It is this

efficiency of planning and organization which

enables man to be happy and prosperous.

Skill of organization does not merely

comprise of an analysis of existing situation. It

also includes a consideration of past and

initiation of action for necessary changes

without any loss of time. For improvement in

future, an assessment is also to be made of the

requirements of additional inputs and the

actions required to make arrangements for

them. Organization is the name for this totality

of conceptual analysis irrespective of the

purpose for which it is carried out. Physical

health and mental health are two significant

foundations of competences. One is, therefore,

advised to be as vigilant about them as isnecessary for operation and eradicating faults

    in any multi product industry.

Role of Spirituality in an Organization

For making use of physical and mental gifts

of nature in a right manner, it is necessary to

remain in a cheerful state. The mind should

always be kept discerning and alert. It is

necessary to exercise self restraint, develop

discernment and thereby be fully aware o

future consequences of actions. In one word,

this state of mind is known as talent. Only

talented people are capable of thinking about

many facets of problems on the basis of existing

facts and manage to govern their own as well as

others activities to establish a well organized

    system for alleviation.

When a person begins to contemplatedeeply and critically into the details of ones

existing environment and its projections in

future , it may be considered a major step in the

direction of progress. Any decision for firm

pragmatic action must be taken after projecting

the existing environment into its likely future.

Besides imbibing a progressive attitude, it isnecessary to have a clear concept of the work in

    hand. Environments are perpetually

undergoing change and each one of us has his

own characteristic way and style of working. By

aping the methodology and line of action of a

successful person, one may not necessarily

achieve the same degree of success. One is,

therefore advised to plan ones actions

according to ones own environment. It

requires an independent frame of mind,

    farsightedness and prompt pragmatic

    approach.

The process of each human endeavor follows

a definite course. It begins with an ambition.

Each new ambition gives rise to energy and

motivation for a continuous effort for its

fulfillment. Although an ambition in itself

means beginning of ultimate success, it must

also be kept in mind that the ambition must

not relate to small achievements and such goals

are chosen which could also provide an

everlasting social recognition as well as self

satisfaction. The highest level of ambition can

only be one that is to develop ones own

personality to such elevated level so as to beable to guide others as well as towards

excellence. This is in fact the true leadership.

Proper structuring of time is an important

characteristic of a good manager. One who is

unable to utilize ones own time appropriately

according to priorities and spends routine

haphazardly does not succeed in convincing

others about the value of time. Discipline is a

multi-dimensional virtue. Regularity is one of

    its dimensions. Involvement, perseverance and

carrying out responsibilities could also be

regarded as attributes of discipline. Associate

workers of a person who manages to keep

    oneself systematic and organized, react

according to latters style of functioning in

order to meet the requirements of its objectives

    and expectations.

Role of Spirituality in an Organization

A manager must not have traits of strong

likes or dislikes. It is better to follow the middle

course. Whenever one deviates from this

moderation of civility, and adopts extreme

attitudes, one becomes exposed to undesirable

pressures. By avoiding this weakness one can

easily escape many embarrassing situations. It

is neither desirable to become disturbed or

    agitated under unfavorable circumstances nor

it is good to boast in the event of achievement,

however significant they may be. Only on

developing such a poise, one succeeds in

finding means for counteracting adversities and

making circumstances favorable with renewed vigor. An excited person loses sense o

reasoning and aggravates the misery by

    irresponsible behavior and actions.

The art of living is like managing a big

    commercial establishment. Only those persons

succeed in appropriate utilization of life and get

increasing returns, who take recourse to

    detailed planning, pragmatic approach and

    systematic organization. Only those individuals

who have the wisdom to shape their life styles

by properly channelizing their time, energy,

mental faculties and talents in the right

    direction by meticulous planning, are

acclaimed by the world. An efficient manager

learns to organize ones own personal affairs

and utilizes the experience so gained for

management of other persons and theirassignments. This in fact is the acid test of

organizational skill, which every aspirant has to

    undergo.

    Cloud Computing

Continuing our discussion from the last

issue on latest trends in technology we move onto a technology provisioning model that uses

virtualization as a key component. While

virtualization is a technique used to abstract

    physical characteristics of computing resources

from systems, applications or end users that

use those resources , cloud computing can be

considered as model that uses this abstraction

to provide flexible, on demand and cost

    efficient technology solutions to organizations.

Cloud computing refers to a set o

    technologies, disciplines and business models

used to deliver IT requirements as on-demand

service. The principle point here is that the

organization accessing this cloud pays on a per

use basis for the use of infrastructure, platform

or services. Enterprises may reduce size and

complexity of the IT applications that theydirectly develop or maintain by shifting non

strategic yet essential IT applications to the

cloud. E.g Monthly payroll and reporting

system of a manufacturing company that does

not need same levels of server usage

throughout the month can be shifted to a third

party cloud and paid for on a per use basis.

    Tiered architecture for cloud computing:

1.Software as a service (SaaS): SaaS is when avendor designs the application and hosts itso that users can access the applicationthrough a web browser over the internet. The vendor designs, hosts and maintains thesoftware application.

2.Platform as a service (PaaS): A level belowSaaS, PaaS is an externally managedapplication platform for building andoperating applications and services. PaaSenvironment supplies development andruntime frameworks to supportpresentation, business logic, data access, and communication capabilities.

3.Software infrastructure as a service :Software infrastructure as a service (SIaaS) isa stand-alone cloud service that provides aspecific application support capability, butnot the entire application software platformservice. SIaaS offers the liberty of developingapplications that have no dependencies oninternal infrastructure components.

4.Hardware Infrastructure as a service :Hardware infrastructure as a service (HIaaS)is a virtual or physical hardware resourceoffered as a service. HIaaS can beimplemented as a server virtualization, gridmodels and clustering technology.

    Cloud Computing

The end user or the enterprise that uses

cloud computing system, interacts with the

cloud via a service interface and further details

of the cloud are immaterial to the end user. Theenterprise is charged on a per use basis that

could be measured by time for which the

service is used or bytes (payloads) that are

transferred , modified or consumed or by any

other agreement between the enterprise and

    the cloud provider.

Broadly speaking cloud computing can be

implemented using following two models1. Public cloud business model :In this modellarge number of enterprises with varied needsshare the cloud infrastructure. Cloud vendorsincrease profits by maximizing utilization oresources, attracting and retainingas manycustomers as possible ,maintaining appropriateservice levels.

    2. Private cloud business model : Privateclouds generally cater to a group of enterpriseswith almost same IT needs. A group of suchenterprises may be served better by privatebusiness model by implementing required levelof customisation.

Now lets look at the various advantages that

    this IT provisioning model has

    1. Optimal Use of resources for ITimplementation: The enterprise doesnt requireto own the entire IT setup. Non critical ITactivities are shifted to the cloud saving cost.

    2. Tackling fluctuating and unpredictable loadpatterns: Cloud computing allows enterprisesto have additional infrastructure andcomputing power as and when required. Thisreduces cost of having excessive capacitiesthroughout the operating cycle. Theseresources are surrendered back when the loadreduces.3. Decoupling of strategic businessapplications and infrastructure needed to run it

leads to higher specialization in both thedomains.4. Reduced Risk : A start-up or a companyventuring into new Line of Business can dilutethe risk of failure in IT applications by usingcloud computing.5. Reduced time to respond to IT needs of aorganisation.

Find the business application of virtualization and cloud computing in the

coming issues along with other contemporarytechnology updates.

    Vivek Bhatnagar,

B.E. (Metallurgy), Batch of 1998, IIT Roorkee.

After passing from IIT Roorkee he joined Telco in Pune and worked there for 2 years. Thereafter, he

did his MBA from US in 2002. During his MBA he was pretty much aware that he has to join some

company in the field of management consulting. He worked in various management consulting

companies till 2006. For past 3 years, he has been working as the Business Development Manager for

    YAHOO(US).

    Management Consulting

Management consulting indicates both theindustry of, and the practice of, helpingorganizations improve their performance, primarily through the analysis of existingbusiness problems and development of plans for

    improvement.

Organizations hire the services omanagement consultants for a number oreasons, including gaining external (andpresumably objective) advice and access to theconsultants' specialized expertise.

Because of their exposure to and relationshipswith numerous organizations, consulting firmsare also said to be aware of industry "best

practices", although the transferability of suchpractices from one organization to another maybe limited or problematic.

Consultancies may also provideorganizational change management assistance, development of coaching skills, technologyimplementation, strategy development, oroperational improvement services. Managementconsultants generally bring their own, proprietary methodologies or frameworks to

guide the identification of problems, and toserve as the basis for recommendations for moreeffective or efficient ways of performing businesstasks.

    Approaches to Management consulting:

    1. Strategic Consulting: In this type, consultingcompanies only have to give solution to existingbusiness problem. This one is also calledprescriptive approach as a consulting firm acts asan expert and prescribes the way to solutionrather than implementing them. Examplesinclude Mckinsey, Bain, BCG, ATKearney, Booz& Co.

    2. Operational Consulting: These types ofcompanies also get into implementing thesolutions suggested to the client. Examplesinclude Deloitte, KPMG, Accenture, IBMconsulting.

Many consulting firms are organized in amatrix structure, where one 'axis' describes abusiness function or type of consulting: forexample, strategy, operations, technology, executive leadership, process improvement, talent management, sales, etc. The second axis isan industry focus: for example, oil and gas, retail, automotive. Together, these form a matrix, withconsultants occupying one or more 'cells' in thematrix. For example, one consultant may

specialize in operations for the retail industry, and another may focus on process improvementin the downstream oil and gas industry.

    Management Consulting

    Current state of Industry:

    1. Currently, there are four main types oconsulting firms:

    2. Large, diversified organizations that offer arange of services, including informationtechnology consulting, in addition to a strategyconsulting practice (e.g. Accenture, ABeamConsulting, Capgemini, Deloitte, IBM).

    3. Medium-sized information technologyconsultancies, that blend boutique style withsome of the same services and technologiesbigger players offer their clients.

    4. Management and strategic consultingspecialists that offer primarily StrategyConsulting and Business Intelligence Models toany industries (e.g. Bain & Company, Booz &Company, McKinsey & Company, Arthur D.Little and The Boston Consulting Group).

    5. Boutique firms, often quite small, which havefocused areas of consulting expertise in specificindustries, functional areas or technologies.

A fifth type that is emerging is the sourcingadvisory firm, that advise buyers on sourcingchoices related to insourcing, outsourcing,

vendor selection, and contract negotiations. Thetop 10 sourcing advisors (as ranked by the BlackBook of Outsourcing) were TPI, Gartner,Hackett Group, Everest Group, PwC, Avasant,PA Consulting, and EquaTerra.

Skills Required:To be good in the field of management

consulting one should possess skills likeintegrative, analytical, problem solving andcommunication skills. And a good

communicator means the one who can influencethe other person and create an impact by histalks. Apart from this, case studies provide thebest learning method to an individual new tothis industry. One must be able to talk a lotabout general topics but then, one should focuson at least one core area. Aspirant should be ableto bring back the interviewer to your comfortzone where you should be the master. Its allabout learning the trades of a particular industry

in a very short time interval.

    Queries dealt by the Speaker

Q: As students what should we do to get the job in a top consulting firm?

A: At this juncture, work over your soft skills and try to be in touch with your dream companysomehow and try to learn about it more and more.

Q: Can the skills for a career in management consulting be developed or are they in built?

A: These skills can be developed over a period of time but before that a person should be verywell convinced that he has to go in management consulting and he should develop a taste for it.

Q: Is it easy to switch from operational consulting to strategic consulting?A: Yes but depends. During the early years, you might like to switch as you are exploring youroptions. But after working for 10 years in a particular industry, it might not be a good idea toswitch from operational to consulting.

Q: Is an MBA necessary for career in management consulting?

A: No. But doing an MBA does help in terms of gaining an overall knowledge of businessfunctions and the kind of problems a firm faces while operating in business environment.

Q: How different is the job of a Management Consultant to that of an Investment Banker?

A: They are both same in terms of time at the job and the money they offer. Rest all is different.Q: Before recession came, students used to go to US while taking good amount of loan. But Afterrecession students are finding it tough to get a decent job that can also fund their loan. As aresult fewer students are going to US now. In this downturn, are the foreign B-Schools willing tocut the fees they take?

A:As of now, I dont see any major reduction in the fees as that will result in dilution of brandimage. But in future, US B-schools might not increase their fees for a long time as they have a lotof funds.
