This week beginning Monday, March 8th, the sacrament of Confession is being made available to all our students in the Religious Education program. We are incredibly grateful to our pastor, Fr. Luke Hoyt, O.P., and to all of our priests for taking the time to be available for the students Our Second graders have already led the way last week by receiving their First Reconciliation. They were well prepared and completed this first step toward receiving First Holy Communion in May. This is an especially perfect time for our Eighth graders to have this opportunity since they will be receiving Confirmation, in a few weeks on March 20th. In Confession we can repent and recover the grace of friendship with God. Receiving absolution from any sins we may have committed is like a “spring cleaning” for our souls! We hope that many of our students will avail themselves of this sacrament this week. It helps us stay close to God and the church, a friendship that will sustain us through a pandemic and through life.

Volunteer Opportunity:

Holy Innocents Church Care Group

Get involved in caring for our church by cleaning and beautifying our parish space, keeping our facility looking its very best. We will meet on Saturdays twice monthly between 10am and 2pm, starting March 6th. Each participant may commit time according to their availability. All are welcome, ages 12 and up. (Yes, it can be a community service opportunity!)

Observing the Feast of St. Joseph

Along with the rest of the Church, Holy Innocents will be marking St. Joseph’s Day with solemnity on Friday, March 19

th. St. Joseph is no slouch—he is

patron of the Universal Church and patron to workers, fathers, and the sick and dying. Given that Pope Francis has declared this year to belong particularly to St. Joseph’s patronage, we’ll be having a few events that day to mark it well:

Our Recessional hymn this weekend is Fly Like a Bird. It was written by Ken Canedo, a composer of liturgical music who uses a variety of influences and styles in his works. Ken is proficient in piano, guitar and electric bass and uses the music styles that have inspired him from traditional chant, gospel, jazz and rock. The Mass of Glory and the beautiful hymn, For the Sake of Christ are examples of Ken’s works. Ken is currently the Youth Ministry advisor for Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverton, Oregon, and received his master of divinity degree from St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo, California. When asked how he composed this hymn, he provided the following details. There was a point in my life when I turned away from the church. It was a prodigal moment. I had grown up in the church, and church ministry, but turned to the thriving California music scene and began to play bass guitar in a Punk rock band. It was exciting and unfulfilling at the same time. Ken relates that after awhile he was physically and spiritually starving and the words of the Prodigal Son parable came to mind, “in my father’s house even the servants are well fed”, so he picked up the phone and called the diocese of Oakland to see if there were any churches in need of a piano player. He was invited to attend mass at St. Monica’s parish in Moraga, California, to check out the parish and for them to check him out. Ironically the parish was using Ken’s Mass of Glory and Ken was moved to tears upon hearing it. During the audition, the Pastoral Associate, realized who was sitting in front of her, and said “where have you been?”. Ken said, I’d like to come back, and was immediately hired on the spot and welcomed back home! After a few months of working in both Youth Ministry and Music Ministry, Ken felt like he was home. He was driving to work at the parish one day on the mountainous back roads, and saw a condor in flight. Ken was so struck by its beauty and majesty that he pulled the car over to watch the magnificent bird. The swooping motion of the bird and its free back and forth motion stuck with him. When he got to work, the idea of flying like a bird drove him to the piano. A melody with up and down movement like what he witnessed came to him, and he opened the bible. A phrase from Psalm 139 captured him, “where can I flee from your love, if I fly to the heavens you are there.” That phrase became the refrain and the verses are loosely based on the psalm. This hymn is a personal expression of how Ken had been away and came back. Through all the trials and tribulations he had experienced as a prodigal, God was still there! “where can I run from your love, where can I hide from my God, from the dawn of morning’s light to the darkness of the night, O God your presence is real!” The song is an expression of Ken’s joy at being back in the church, coming home to a loving father who is there and waiting, just like the father in the Prodigal son parable.

Liturgy Notes for the

Third Sunday of Lent

March 7, 2021

Jesus “did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it

well.” Fallen human nature always attempts to define the meaning of life with something

we can measure. That is what the presence of the moneychangers at the Temple

symbolizes. Their worldly activity in this most sacred place reveals their moral

bankruptcy: they prefer riches to a relationship with god. But the commandments of the

Lord “are more previous than a heap of purest gold.” They save us from such

foolishness and bless us with “the foolishness of God.” (us.magnificat.net)

Entrance Antiphon

My eyes are always on the Lord, for he rescues my feet from the snare.

Turn to me and have mercy on me, for I am alone and poor.

O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness, who is fasting,
