Dolly's story begins on May 20, 1768 in Guilford County, North Carolina. She had long, curly black hair. Since her family was in the Quaker community, she wore gray dresses that reached down to the floor. As Dolly grew up, she got tired of being a Quaker. She longed to wear colorful dresses and expensive jewelry. It was said that Dolly kept a golden chain hidden under her handkerchief.

When Dolly was about twelve years old, her father and mother decided to move to a different farm. Also at this time Dolly's father wanted to fight for his country's independence. It was a troublesome time for the children. Their mother was also very worried. Without Dolly's father, the tobacco would not grow strong, and they might not make enough money for food and other important needs. As the days passed and the war came to an end, Dolly's father came back and at last all was normal. When he returned, Dolly's family freed all of their slaves. Yet they did not know at the time that this would affect their crops, but they did find out! Since they had freed their slaves, Dolly's family needed a new business. Once again they moved, this time to Philadelphia. This did not help their business one bit. After awhile, Dolly's family could not pay their bills. The Quaker community asked for Dolly's father to leave their group. Time passed; Dolly's mother opened a boarding house to help get more money. This was a busy time for Dolly.

Dolly Payne Todd Madison was the wife of James Madison, 4th President of the United States (1809-1817). She was one of the best known and loved First Ladies, and her social presence boosted her husband’s popularity as President. For half a century she was the most important woman in the social circles of America. To this day she remains one of the best known and best loved ladies of the White House--though often referred to, mistakenly, as Dorothy or Dorothea. She always called herself Dolly, and by that name the New Garden Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends, in Piedmont, North Carolina, recorded her birth to John and Mary Coles Payne, settlers from Virginia. In 1769 John Payne took his family back to his home colony, and in 1783 he moved them to Philadelphia, city of the Quakers. Dolly grew up in the strict discipline of the Society, but nothing muted her happy personality and her warm heart

During this time, Madison had many suitors and was very popular. At the age of 21, many of her friends were already married, but she was in no hurry to settle down. The most persistent of her suitors was a man by the name of John Todd, a religious Quaker and lawyer. Eventually, Madison said yes to his proposal and the two were married in January of 1790. Two years later they had their first son, and a year after that, their second.August of 1793 brought about a horrific change in many Philadelphians' lives. An epidemic of yellow fever swept over the city, and it was the worst epidemic to strike any American city at that time. A great number of people died, including Madison's husband and second born child. Although she also became ill, Madison eventually recovered after a long, slow fight. She then found herself a widow who had to care for her remaining son, Payne.
