When the time comes to make NewYear's resolutions, the conventional wis-dom is to focus on weight. Such wisdomis understandable, as many peoplespend the holiday season indulging inbig meals and all the treats synony-mous with having fun.

While it's acceptable to make healthyresolutions, a slimmer waist and ahealthier diet should not be the onlygoals for the year ahead. In light of the

last several years, it's important for menand women to make financial resolu-tions for the year ahead, too. No one cansay with certainty when, or if, the econ-omy will rebound, and men and womenshould look at the New Year as a suit-able time to make some financial reso-lutions for the future.

* Reassess your investment plan.Since 2008, the market has been upand down like a roller coaster. Those

who have weathered the storm have nodoubt witnessed big gains and signifi-cant losses over the last few years, andthe turn of the calendar is a great timeto reassess investments and possiblymake some changes. Are you taking onmore risk than you're comfortable with?Is your portfolio too conservative? Howwell are you diversifying? Look at yourinvestments from every angle and deter-mine if it's time to make some changes.

* Resolve to be more liquid. A 2011poll from the National Foundation forCredit Counseling found that 64 per-cent of Americans would need to utilizea source other than their savings ac-count to pay for a $1,000 unplannedexpense. That percentage illustratesthat most adults just don't haveenough cash on hand. This year, re-solve to be more liquid. Being more liq-uid enables you to more effectivelyhandle emergencies, and it also helpsyou avoid being forced to sell invest-ments at the wrong time.

* Shake things up. If you rely on oneindividual to handle all of your financialneeds, such a practice needs to change. No matter how much you trust this per-son, don't fall into a trap where one per-son acts as your financial svengali.Such an arrangement proved very cost-ly to those men and women who trustedthe likes of Bernie Madoff, a once-prominent financier who turned out tobe nothing more than a criminal mas-termind orchestrating history's largest

Ponzi scheme. This year, if you haven'tdone so already, make sure your finan-cial advisor, money manager, custodian, and trustee are all different people.

* Negotiate lower rates. Use the onsetof the New Year as a chance to negotiatenewer and lower interest rates on exist-ing loans or credit cards. If you have ex-ercised financial responsibility over thelast 12 months, paying down debts andpaying all bills on time, this is the per-fect time to negotiate lower rates andreap the rewards of your good behavior.

* Don't invest in anything you don'tunderstand. Too often investors getcaught up in so-called expert forecastsand act impulsively based on the adviceof some talking head they see on televi-sion or hear on the radio. Unfortunate-ly, such "experts" aren't always certifiedfinancial professionals, and some mighteven have ulterior motives for pushingcertain investments and shunning oth-ers. What's more, few people know thetrack record of these "experts," so theiradvice should not be taken at face val-ue. A simple rule for the year aheadshould be to never invest in anythingyou don't understand. If an investmentopportunity seems worthwhile, do all ofyour homework to gain a solid under-standing of the opportunity before in-vesting any money.

Healthy resolutions go beyond a slim-mer waist and a healthier diet. Thisyear, resolve to get healthier financiallyas well.

Many people take advantage of year-end automotive incentives to trade intheir cars for something shiny andnew. There's a good chance that incen-tives will be even more enticing thisseason thanks to events that occurredin early 2011.

The earthquake and subsequenttsunami that ravaged Japan in March2011 impacted the production andsupply of many vehicles. Furthermore,

many "domestic" cars are built or arecomprised from parts that are madeoutside of their native countries. Therefore, it's not just Japanesebrands that have been affected by ex-treme weather this past year.

What this spells out in dollars andcents to the average consumer is theability to save some money on a newcar simply because automotive retail-ers are looking to move merchandise

and recoup some of the losses fromearlier in the year. Many automakersare extending incentives until the firstfew months of 2012 to capitalize onpost-holiday spending. Some industryexperts predict low interest rates, com-petitive rebates and other wheelingand dealing to attract customers. Al-though the sales prices may be avail-able, customer interest might still betepid because of the ongoing recession. However, there just may be ample op-portunity for those with spending cashto save on a new vehicle.

When heading to the dealership, keep these tips in mind.

* Know the invoice price on the car bydoing your research. It will help younegotiate the lowest price available.

* Don't appear too anxious to buy acar at a particular dealership. Tell thesalesperson you're shopping around.

* It's best to negotiate for the lowesttotal price of the car, NOT the lowest

payment. Sales strategies often en-able salespeople to work the numbersto get you your payment. But thatcould mean a longer loan term, whichwould raise the overall cost of the cardue to interest.

* Check out the safety reports andcrash test ratings of the vehicle you'reconsidering. Also, research the resalevalue if you're not planning on keepingthis car for a long time. It could makea difference in the make you select.

* While some dealerships may not beopen to negotiating price, they may beoffering a low interest rate, which cansave you money. Also, certain extrascould be included for no cost.

Now could be the time to see record-low prices on vehicles as dealershipstry to move leftover inventory and re-cover from the slump in productioncaused by last year's tragic earthquakein Japan.

Do you think that all New Year's res-olutions are a bit fishy? Perhaps you'resuspicious of the fads that appear eachJanuary, offering us the latest in fit-ness and diet trends that promise aslimmer you in the year to come. Thisyear, instead of focusing on weightloss, why not resolve to try a tried andtrue resolution that will mean trulybetter overall health for you and yourfamily -- eating well with foods likeTrue North's Omega-3 rich Atlanticsalmon from the Gulf of Maine, wherethe salmon is the freshest?

2012 should be the year for payingmore attention to overall health andwell-being. Atlantic salmon is one ofthe most healthy and nutritious foodchoices available and is a great addi-tion to any New Year's resolution thatis aimed at living healthier. It's an ex-cellent source of protein and loadedwith vitamins and minerals, and isalso one of the best sources of naturalOmega-3 fatty acids.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fats are of-ten known as "the good fats" and areconsidered essential because we needthem to live a healthy life but we haveto get them from external sources likeseafood. The American Heart Associa-tion recommends that people includeat least two servings of fish, particular-ly fatty fish such as Atlantic salmon, per week in their diets in part because

of numerous health benefits associat-ed with Omega-3s.

As a great source of Omega-3 DHAand EPA essential fatty acids, Atlanticsalmon helps the body's heart health -- helping prevent heart disease andstroke, reducing the risk of cancer, lowering cholesterol; and may assist inbrain health -- maintaining healthybrain activity and reducing the chanceof developing Alzheimer's disease inadults, and enhancing brain develop-ment and promoting learning in chil-dren. Studies have also shown Omega-3s may prevent depression, schizo-phrenia and memory loss, along withjust generally increasing our daily en-ergy levels and acting as an anti-in-flammatory.

Atlantic salmon leads the way, sur-passing all other seafood, includingwild salmon, in Omega-3 DHA andEPA amounts per serving. Not onlythat, but it's an excellent source ofprotein and lower than beef or chickenin saturated fats.

It's easy to start adding more Atlanticsalmon to your diet and you can startout simply with basic recipes like TrueNorth's Salmon with Soy-Honey andWasabi Sauce. Salmon isn't complicat-ed to cook, and when you combine thegreat taste with the knowledge that it'sso good for you, you'll find yourselfpreparing it more often.

A great way to work salmon in toyour new year's meal plan is to startslowly by swapping out one of yourguilty pleasure meals -- something youknow isn't very good for you -- with aquick delicious meal of Atlantic salmonfrom the Gulf of Maine, where thesalmon is the freshest. You'll feel betterabout the choice you've made and yourbody and mind will thank you.

HEALTHY EATING TIPS* Bake, broil or grill your salmon in-

stead of pan-frying it.* Limit the amount of oil you use.* Flavour your salmon with season-

ings like dill, lemon or pepper insteadof butter or oil.

* If you do use oil, make it olive oil.Research suggests that, like salmon, this monounsaturated fat lowers therisk of heart disease.

* Pair your salmon with a healthyside dish like steamed broccoli, carrotsor vegetable stir-fry. Not only will thesecolorful veggies look good, they're goodfor you too.

Homeowners spend thousands ofdollars per year on energy. Whether ahome is big or small, energy costs area concern for homeowners.

Though some of the costs of homeownership are beyond a person's con-trol, there are some steps homeownerscan take to reduce energy costs andsave substantial amounts of money asa result.

* Address any leaks. One of the mosteffective ways to cut energy costs is toweather strip doors and windowsthroughout the house. Doing so willkeep warm air in the house when it'scold and prevent drafts that occurwhen cold air enters the home throughcracks and leaks. If a home has an at-tic, be sure to seal pipes, chimneys orductwork. Addressing leaks can savehomeowners as much as 10 percent ontheir annual home energy costs.

* Use compact fluorescent lightbulbsinstead of incandescent lightbulbs.CFLs use one-quarter to one-third lessenergy than traditional incandescent

lightbulbs. In addition, the Alliance toSave Energy notes that CFLs can lastup to 10 times longer than traditionallightbulbs.

* Be mindful of the thermostat. Most homeowners and their familiesspend a good portion of their day outof the house. Home heating costs canbe reduced by as much as 20 percentif homeowners simply lower the ther-mostat during the day by 10 F. Forhomeowners who feel they won't re-member to do so on a regular basis, aprogrammable thermostat will do thejob on its own.

* Lower water temperature. Loweringwater temperature can also lead tosubstantial savings. Homeowners cansave as much as five percent on theirwater bill by lowering the temperatureon their water heater by as little as 10F. When doing so, touch the outside ofthe water heater. If the outside is cold, the water heater has sufficient insula-tion If the water heater is hot to thetouch, wrap a water heater jacket

around it to increase efficiency.* Replace older appliances. Older ap-

pliances, be it an older central air con-ditioning unit or an older water heater, often need to expend more energy thanthey did when they were new. What'smore, especially older appliances

might not meet Energy Star standards, which can cost homeowners substan-tial amounts of money over the courseof a year. Homeowners who replacesuch appliances might be eligible fortax credits when buying more energyefficient products.

During the winter, me-teorologists report the ac-tual air temperature out-side and the windchilltemperature. Do youknow the difference be-tween the two? Air tem-perature is the thermo-stat reading of the tem-perature outdoors. Wind-chill temperature is what

it feels like to the bodywhen the wind is blow-ing. According to the Na-tional Weather ServiceOffice of Climate, Waterand Weather Services, asthe wind increases, itdraws heat from thebody, decreasing skintemperature and eventu-ally the internal body

temperature. Therefore, the wind makes it feelmuch colder. Windchilltemperature only affectshumans and other ani-mals. It will have no ef-fect on inanimate objects. Those objects will notcool down past the cur-rent air temperature.

According to the 2009National Health Inter-view Survey from theCenters for Disease Con-trol and Prevention, 46million persons underthe age of 65 are unin-sured in the UnitedStates, an increase ofnearly 2.5 million per-sons from the preceding

year. The same surveyfound that 6.1 millionchildren under the ageof 18 were uninsured atthe time of interview, which marked a de-crease of roughly half amillion uninsured chil-dren from the year prior. While the number ofuninsured children un-

der the age of 18 has de-creased dramaticallysince 1997, the samecannot be said for theoverall number of unin-sured persons in theUnited States. In 1997,that figure stood at 41million. While during theensuing decade thenumber of uninsured

Americans remain rela-tively close to 41 million, the increase of roughly2.5 million uninsuredU.S. residents between2008 and 2009 markedthe largest such year-to-year increase since anearly identical increasefrom 1999 to 2000.

Dear God,The other day, a 56-year-old suburban Dallas man facing

marital and financial problems killed his estranged wife, twoteenage children and three other family members on Christ-mas Day while dressed as Santa Claus before turning thegun on himself…

A few days later, a western New York woman sent her hus-band on an errand then used a shotgun to kill her father, her 10-year-old daughter and herself….

Also in Texas……Santa Claus was shot dead by a jealoushusband late Saturday night in a double murder….

Over in New Orleans we read….Detectives have arrestedthe live-in girlfriend of a man shot and killed the day afterChristmas...

In St. Maries, ID: A man has been arrested after a St.Maries woman was shot and killed on Christmas Day…

It has been documented that in Syracuse, NY: A Syracuseman has been arrested on charges of beating his girlfriendto death on Christmas Eve.

All these murders took place on Christmas Day or withina few days of the celebration of Christmas. I am heartbro-ken to hear news of such tragedies. It was my understand-ing that this season was the celebration of the birth of YourSon, Jesus. I was told that He came to save us from oursins. It is very hard for me to comprehend all of the evil thathas taken place in just a few short days. These were just acouple of newspaper clippings that I read. There were nu-merous of murders that occurred all over the world, duringthis same time period.

This is my prayer in response to all of this: That You wouldlook down on all the corruption and begin to put compas-sion, love, forgiveness, and mercy into the hearts of menand women. We need it so desperately. We need to look atmankind as a whole and realize that You made us in Yourimage and in the likeness of Your Son, Jesus.

It doesn’t matter which country we reside in, we all werecreated the same. We all bleed the same. We all breathe thesame air. We all were birthed into this life through ourmother’s womb. Help us to understand and accept our dif-ferences. Help us to see life as You see it. Help us to valuewhat You have given us; LIFE ITSELF.

Please hear my prayer!Marjorie

HHome,, Family,, Friendss && You

by Angela Shelf MedearisNew year, new you!

Many people invest time and energyin losing weight after the holidays. Ifyou’re one of them, the most importantthing to remember is to adopt healthyhabits that last.

Glenda Kinder, nutrition and healtheducation specialist with University ofMissouri Extension, suggests workingon habits that result in both healthbenefits and weight loss. Weight-loss-only diets don’t work because theyfocus on avoiding forbidden foods, noton enjoying delicious, nutritious foods.

When making diet changes, keep itsimple. Focus on making differentchoices and examine the types of foodyou typically eat. Instead of highlyprocessed foods made from white flour, look for ways to eat more whole-grainfoods. It’s never been easier to find atasty, whole-grain product in breads, cereals, crackers and other grain foods.

One of the best ways to satisfy yourappetite is to eat a lean, healthy proteinat each meal. Healthy proteins likechicken or turkey breast, fish, lean redmeat, whey protein and nonfat dairycan help you stay on your diet plan. Forsome meals, choose a vegetable proteinlike nuts, beans, tofu or edamame. Ingeneral, a protein serving should not bemore than the size and thickness of thepalm of your hand. Proteins take longerfor your body to digest, so you feel fulllonger. A meal high in protein and plantfoods can prevent cravings for up tofour hours.

Another practice for a healthy diet isto eat two colors at every meal. Thismeans eating two or more servings ofplants — the fresher and more colorfulthe better — morning, noon and night.Although juice is a healthy choice, it’s

best to limit the amount consumed tono more than 3/4 cup a day. You’re bet-ter off eating the whole fruit — it’s moresatisfying and provides more fiber. There’s nothing like fresh produce forimproving health and achieving weightloss. Vegetables are more importantthan fruits, so try to have at least onevegetable at each meal.

If you follow these simple guidelinesand incorporate great recipes like myChicken and Apples with LemonBalsamic Sauce, you can controlhunger, and you’ll give your body thedisease-fighting nutrients it needs.

Chicken and Apples with Lemon Balsamic Sauce

Chicken breast meat is a healthy butrather bland source of protein. Pairinglean chicken with apples and spinachin this flavorful lemon balsamic sauceshowcases each ingredient and pro-vides you with a lean protein, fruit anda vegetable in one dish.

4 chicken breast halves with the skinbut no bone (about 1 1/4 pounds)

1 1/2 tablespoons poultry seasoning1/2 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepperCooking-oil spray1/4 cup balsamic vinegar2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon

juice1 teaspoon lemon zest2 cloves garlic, minced1 cup canned reduced-sodium chick-

en broth or chicken stock1/2 teaspoon agave syrup1 large Jonagold or Mutsu apple (8

oz.), cut in half, cored and sliced thinly 1 (16 ounce) bag triple-washed baby

spinach1 tablespoon whipped butter1. Season chicken on both sides with

1 tablespoon poultry seasoning, saltand pepper.

2. Spray a large skillet with the cook-ing-oil spray and heat on high until hot;reduce heat to medium-high and addthe chicken breasts, skin side down.

Saute for 6 minutes or until the skin isnicely browned. Transfer with tongs ora slotted spoon to a plate and coverloosely with aluminum foil.

3. Turn the heat to high. Mix theremaining 1/2 tablespoon of poultryseasoning, vinegar, lemon juice andzest, garlic, broth and syrup in skilletuntil well-blended. Bring sauce to a boil.

4. Turn heat to low and add butter, stirring until it melts. Add apples andhalf the bag of spinach and stir. Simmerfor 6 minutes and add remainingspinach. Simmer another 3 minutes, until the apples soften and the saucereduces slightly.

5. Add chicken, skin side up, to thepan, along with any juices from thechicken plate. Cook 12 to 14 minutesover medium heat, or until chicken isjust cooked through. Transfer chickento each of 4 plates and top each servingwith some of the sauce. Serve with

Hello, I’m Haley Groat and I am 18years old. I currently attend MorrisvilleState College. I am a freshman andalso the 2011-2012 Delaware Countydairy princess.

The question I am most frequentlyasked is why do you want to be a dairyprincess, since you are not from a dairyfarm? I always smile and say that grow-ing up with a father that transportsand delivers milk has given me greatrespect for the farmer’s way of life.

I have seen how the dairy industrytouched the lives of so many smallbusinesses and people. It providedjobs to farmers and their children, itopened feed stores and grocery mar-kets and it’s what fuels our morningsevery single day. I know my cerealwouldn’t taste the same without a deli-cious serving of milk.

My father has been in the dairyindustry for 30 years now, and I amthe granddaughter of a dairy farmer soI know how hard the life of a farmercan be. Being dairy princess gives methe chance to represent all the hardworking farmers and people who workin the dairy industry. And it is mypleasure to give back to them whatthey have given to all of us.

I have been diligently working asdairy princess through school pro-grams, parades, bank visits, farm

meetings, Ice cream socials and in thegreat Delaware county fair. My favoritepart of being dairy princess was the(fuel up to play 60) program I did withthe Walton middle school’s fun and fit-ness program. I also got the opportuni-ty to talk to the football team aboutrefueling with chocolate milk and howit helps their bodies after a hard work-out. I am also working with the Waltonschool to get a milk vending machineto promote healthier choices instead ofsoda and PowerAde that contain lots ofsugars.

I would like to thank all you farmersthat wake early in the morning to pro-vide the products our communitythrives on. I would also like to thankyou for working 7 days a week and 365days a year to put nature’s most per-fect drink on tables all across America.Being a Dairy Princess to me is notabout the crown or the sash but for thereason and ability to give children achance to hear about the importanceof having dairy in their diet. And fur-thermore to give back to the hardwork-ing farmers that work hard so we don’thave to.

The Delaware County Dairy Princessprogram is made possible through thesupport of the American DairyAssociation and Dairy Council.

Give back to the farmers
