I can’t believe we’re on issue 4 already!

When I’m compiling each issue it’s my aim to inspire YOU – brides and grooms – with beautiful photography, unique ideas and practical advice. Of course I can only do this with the help of my fantastic advertisers and contributors. I’m constantly blown away by the creative talent and the ever-changing ideas and trends in the wedding industry.

I’m so excited to feature our ‘Doily Diner’ styled shoot on pages 16-18. I designed the set myself and directed the shoot. Again, I couldn’t have done it without an amazing team of models, stylists and photographers.

In this issue, I’m especially loving our practical advice feature from The Wedding Speech Guru, I’m totally in awe of DJ Auntie Maureen who has provided our first dance recommendations and the ‘Family Affair’ contribution from Bets & Bobs has warmed the cockles of my heart.

This season we’re busy putting on our own wedding fair in association with Vintage & Very Nice and we’re looking forward to collaborating with The Nostalgic Wedding Fair in the New Year. We’ll be zooming around to as many events as possible, distributing the mag and promoting our new mobile bar!

I hope you enjoy this issue and, as always, I love to receive feedback.

LOVE EmilyDays you’ll (really want to!) remember all your life:

We’ve all seen those wedding photos. You know the ones, huge permed hair, even bigger meringue dress, a colour scheme that looks suspiciously like it’s been nicotine stained (yes we are looking at you, peach-tinted bridesmaids). In order to prevent titters from your future children and grandchildren upon getting the wedding album out, I suggest closing your ears to the latest trends, forgoing the wedding fashions of today and instead injecting a massive dose of timelessness. Here are my sure-fire ways to achieve a chic and elegant wedding that stands the test of time.

Less is (very much) more: When you look back through the fashions of the eras, there are some women that would look just as good now as they did then (and others that must shed a tear every time they come across old photos of themselves). Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly for instance, would still top the best-dressed lists if pictured walking down the red carpets of today’s Hollywood parties. This comes down to simplicity and good taste. You would never see Audrey or Grace in a fussy dress or unflattering cut. So when deciding on your wedding style, try asking yourself, what would Audrey want?

Colour & pattern, or lack thereof: Fashionable colours and patterns are a big part in giving away the date of a wedding. Brights, pastels, specific palettes and bold patterns all look great at the time, but will quickly ensure a wedding photo is easily dated (Burberry-check table covers anyone?) In order to continue to display your photos with pride for years to come, opt for a simple colour scheme with gentle accents, or stick with white.

Shapes & lines: For a truly timeless style, think like a shadow puppet and remember your silhouette. Every style icon and design piece that has stood the test of time has a chic and elegant feel, and this all comes down to shapes and lines. The most obvious time to apply this philosophy is when choosing your wedding dress (choose a shape that will perfectly suit you with absolutely no fuss or garish extras). But don’t stop there! Simple lines can be applied to every aspect of your wedding; your venue, centre pieces, decor and flowers will all benefit from a clean and minimalist approach.

Gina McAdam is a designer of hats and headwear. Based in Guildford, Gina trained at Edinburgh College of Art and completed a Masters at The Royal College of Art, London.

I had the pleasure of meeting her when we were preparing for the Doily Diner shoot (featured on page 16). With her eye for fashion, she was in charge of styling the models on the day – choosing headpieces from her own collection, discussing how they’d work with different hairstyles, and choosing jewellery to compliment each look.

Gina’s collection comprises unique, handcrafted pill-box hats, fascinators and flapper headbands. She carefully sources vintage fabrics, and for the trimmings she uses antique jewellery and beading, Ostrich plume feathers, bows, fans and also incorporates bird cage veils into her designs.

Some people (when I say some people, I mean the Paloma Faith’s of this world) can get away with these amazing headpieces as part of their everyday look, but I’m thinking these show-stopping pieces work perfectly for a big event, with carefully styled hair and make-up and a stunning outfit... a wedding perhaps!

We love the showgirl/high fashion look and we think the following quote from Gina herself sums up her style and ethos perfectly:

“My hats combine the style and glamour of a bygone era with the quality and durability we appreciate today.”

Bijou BridalSex & the City fans... who loves the Vogue bridal shoot featuring Carrie? Getting to try on gorgeous bridal gowns to your heart’s content is every girl’s dream, right? On our travels we found, and fell in love with, Bijou Bridal Boutique located in Felpham near Bognor Regis. It’s an appointment only boutique located at the end of owner Lisa’s back garden. The inviting wooden structure comprises a huge sofa and lounge area (perfect for bridesmaids/mothers to make themselves at home) and an adjoining room full of rail- upon-rail of bridal gowns; and the best bit? As well as new dresses they also stock vintage and pre-loved. You can pick up an absolute bargain here.

I swooned over a dress only to see the £80 price tag! Lisa runs the boutique with her sister Ella. Ella got married in September and they really struggled to find somewhere they felt comfortable trying on dresses. The sisters are absolutely lovely, they have a real passion for the industry and they are delighted to welcome brides, along with their bridesmaids, friends, mothers, aunties...

P.S. We love the juke box too!

I came across Oh Squirrel at the very lovely Chosen wedding fair in London in the spring. I was drawn to the whimsical display and thought ‘what a good idea’! Think hen party and you might think hot pink satin sashes, L-plates and phallic straws. Well, you won’t get a whiff of such tat if you shop for your party paraphernalia with Oh Squirrel.

Prices start at £2 for a badge, going up to £15 for sashes where you can choose from a selection of beautiful cotton fabrics and have your choice of wording printed on.

“Everything I make is inspired by nostalgia and a sense of humour,” says founder Katie Wagstaff. “I love to bring the vintage feel up to date.”

Katie, a trained designer and pattern cutter, works from a studio in North London where she’s surrounded by the vintage treasures that inspire her. Oh Squirrel products also include a wholesale stationery range, and bespoke wedding stationery. The hen party products started when Katie shared a photo on Instagram of some items she’d made for a friend. She started getting enquiries and the rest was history!

I ventured into Keep It Vintage when I was distributing copies of a previous issue. I’ve been to plenty of vintage shops in my time, but Simone Bennett’s shop, on Church Road in Hove, wowed me for a few different reasons.

Simone herself is very friendly, helpful and incredibly talented at restoration and styling. She explained to me how her mentor, with over 40 years in the trade, taught her basic restoration techniques which she now uses every day. The displays in the shop always look ready for a magazine shoot - bigger pieces of furniture are grouped with carefully chosen smaller items, such as vintage tins, colourful glassware and enamel.

It’s a great place to go, not only to source items for your wedding i.e. vintage crockery, vases, glass

bottles for flowers etc, but also to get styling ideas. Simone will happily talk you though some ideas and she even offers a free sourcing service. She’ll go rummaging for those unique, one off pieces, so you don’t have to!

With a small outside area too, it’s a great place for an engagement shoot. Plenty of props to pose with!

Back at the beginning of the summer I was offered a glamping experience by Katrina, MD at Beautiful Bells. I jumped at the chance to experience the luxury, boutique bell tents they provide for weddings, hen parties and private clients. We decided upon a midweek camp to suit our schedules at New Farm Campsite in East Dean. Part of the fun was preparing for my trip. Torch – check, cool bag of food and wine – check, toilet roll – check. My journey there was quite eventful. I encountered a dog with a glass eye, had to stop while three lambs bounded across the road and finally had to navigate a steep, slippery hill. My Honda Jazz was a heroic four wheel drive just for a few minutes. I squelched into camp, late and harassed, and

was immediately proffered a cold G&T and shown to my home for the night. Muddy hills long forgotten, I was in my own boutique bedroom complete with double bed, bunting, candles, fairy lights and a hamper of plastic plates and essentials (bottle opener – hallelujah). I had a lovely evening, drinking red wine, eating my picnic dinner, idly perusing magazines and falling asleep under my 15-tog duvet when the sun went down. I didn’t attempt any kind of fire building/cooking but I did wish I had a camping stove for my morning coffee. I didn’t have to stumble around in a caffeine haze for too long though because Katrina pitched up with a flask of coffee and set to work dismantling camp.I was really impressed with the

service. All the fun of camping without the head scratching moments of which pole goes where, where’s my mallet and uncomfortable nights with nothing between you and the ground sheet. This is how to do it for festival style weddings – your own pop-up boutique hotel. I love the idea of getting someone to provide bacon butties and coffee in the morning. Your friends will surely need some sustenance after doing Oops Upside Your Head until the small hours. Maybe you could make a little survival kit to put in each tent? Use your imagination, but water and Paracetamol are a must.

A big thank you to my host Katrina from Beautiful Bells. She even lent me her wellies.

“Beautiful Bells created such a wonderful and pretty base for our hen weekend, the little extras made it feel very personal to us. Katrina was so supportive during the planning of the weekend and made me feel very relaxed and reassured on our camp site choice, she couldn’t have been more helpful. I would highly recommend hiring a bell tent from Beautiful Bells and I wouldn’t hesitate in using them again. Fabulous experience.”

“I just wanted to say thank you so much for a fantastic weekend. I was having so much trouble finding a venue / company that would cater for a hen party! And then

I found Beautiful Bells and all my problems were solved!”

“Everything was perfect, the finishing touches especially from mirrors, candles, board games and marshmallows, you really thought of everything! The tents looked great and you and your team were so friendly yet professional. Katrina especially went above and beyond and really made planning the hen do much easier.”

“I would recommend Beautiful Bells to anyone for any occasion if they are looking for something like this. Keep up the great work and I wish you and your team all the best for the future.”

Getting Ready ShotsI love to photograph the hustle, bustle, tears and laughter involved in the getting ready process. The earlier I can get there the better (normally three hours before). Even if the bride is not ready for me to start snapping, I like to test the lighting and find places to photograph all the small details – such as the shoes and, of course, the dress. A bride’s best kept secret is her dress so every detail needs to be shown in the images.

Brides: Do not underestimate how fast your wedding morning will go and how long it takes to get everyone ready; the page boys and flower girls are always very reluctant to put their clothes on!

The Couple ShotsIt’s always hard to get a couple relaxed for their photographs together, especially for kissing shots. An engagement shoot before your big day can be beneficial – this lets you get to know your photographer and get comfortable being photographed by them. Let’s be honest, a lot of people don’t like their photo being taken. I often tell the couple to whisper sweet nothings into each other’s ear – this gets them smiling and giggling which allows me to capture those beautiful, natural shots.

Group ShotsSometimes couples don’t want any group shots at all, and others give me a list of people they would like in each shot. Make sure you are specific in what shots you want so the photographer can come up with ways to photograph your guests in a fun, natural way. I am quite short so I carry around what I call a ‘munchkin’ stool to make sure I don’t cut anyone’s head off! It normally gets some laughs on the day.

SpeechesWhoever is talking during the speeches, I normally stand in view of them and also close enough to the bride and groom to capture their reactions which gets the best shots. The father of the bride speech always brings a tear to my eye. It is not tradition to have the bride do a speech, however, I photographed one wedding where the bride did a wonderful heartfelt speech which didn’t leave a dry eye in the room. I think it’s nice for the bride to talk about her husband and say her thank-yous as well on her special day.

DIY Brides Paper Pinwheel ButtonholeYou will need:Paper, Ribbon, Glue, Craft knife, Pencil, Ruler, Sticky tape, Twigs, Buttons (optional)

I use paper for a lot of the decorations I make for my brides and grooms; you can do so much with so little!

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a pinwheel buttonhole, which is a great alternative to fresh flowers and makes a special keepsake after the big day.

By Things By Laura - www.thingsbylaura.co.uk

Step 1 Measure and mark a strip of paper that is 1.5cm wide by 15cm long. Then, very faintly, measure lines across the rectangle every 5mm (if you score these lines, it makes the concertina much neater).

Step 2Once you have cut and scored your paper, fold the strips into a concertina.

Step 3Then, glue the ends together and push the pinwheels flat, gluing a small circle of paper in the centre to secure them. You’ll need to do this on both sides of each pinwheel.

Step 4This is when you can add buttons or any other trinkets! You also need to glue a twig onto the back of each pinwheel.

Step 5Once you have arranged your pinwheels into a shape that you are happy with, you’ll need to wrap some sticky tape around the twigs. Then, glue one end of the ribbon over the tape, wrap around the twigs and trim and glue at the other end.

Step 6All that’s left to do is tie a bow over the wrapped ribbon. Then, pin it to your lapel (you could even sew a safety pin to the ribbon to make it really easy on the day)

When Kelly from Belles Events first told me about

The Quirky Boutique Wedding fair in Brighton she asked how Doily Days could be involved. “Live styled shoot?” I said. “Cool,” she said and that was that. As the spring event got closer I thought, “blooming heck, I’d better think of a theme”. After much deliberation I decided to

create a pop-up diner. I didn’t really intend to make it vintage; I just wanted it to be like a traditional/old fashioned greasy spoon. But like everything I do, it turned out pretty retro looking in the end! We had such fun on the day, working with the photographers and stylists to create fun scenes for the models, all with visitors to the event looking on!

As the set ended up costing me a small fortune I thought “I know, we’ll take it out on the road as a pop-up dining experience”. However, Doily Diner’s fate took a turn when I stumbled upon the amazing 1950s cocktail bar in an antique shop that was closing down. Doily Diner got shelved and Doily’s Mini Bar was born!

Making a Feature of Wedding Speeches

Being at a picture perfect wedding often feels like being in a feature film. You have a stunning setting, a gorgeous leading lady, a dashing leading man and at the end, they walk off into the sunset together.

But a wedding without good speeches is like a film in which you know what happens but don’t fully understand how or why. The speeches provide the backstory, allowing us to appreciate and celebrate how they fell in love.

Great speeches can make the difference between a wedding that feels like a straight-to-DVD horror flick to an Oscar-winning rom-com. Here’s what each speech needs to do:

The father of the bride needs to speak for the bride’s whole family, expressing what she means to them. He must talk about his daughter as a character, what she was like when she was young, how she has grown, and how proud he is of the woman she has become today.

If the bride is not speaking herself, the groom’s speech is the only one addressed from the point of view of the stars of the show: the couple themselves. He can tell the story of how they met and pay tribute to his bride. This is the story that everyone wants to hear.

The best man’s speech is often misunderstood. His job is not to rip the groom to shreds but to commend him to the guests, many of whom may not know him that well. As the groom’s best friend, he is uniquely qualified to provide an insight into what makes him tick. This doesn’t mean that he can’t poke fun at the groom – that’s what friends do – but the main purpose is to celebrate both the groom’s character and his good fortune in meeting the love of his life.

Follow these rules and, as the couple walk into the night to begin their married life together, the wedding guests, like appreciative film critics, will celebrate the momentous moment it is.

Wedding Speech Guru, which is run by author and screenwriter, Robin Bayley, is a personalised coaching service for anyone making a wedding speech. Sussex-based photographers, Nick and Nicci from Velvet Storm Photography, were the official photographers for the Doily Diner styled shoot (featured on previous pages). Here are some behind the scenes shots of the dynamic duo in action and below they tell us a little bit about their style and ethos:

“Wedding photography for Velvet Storm is about creating a set of photographs that tell a story… by working as a male & female team we are able to bring different styles together, shooting our work

from different perspectives and angles. We like to provide a sense of fun to put our clients at ease, whilst blending into the background. Whether it’s a groom seeing his bride for the first time, a child running through a churchyard or the beautiful detail of the flower decorations on a table, we capture it all.

We’re driven by passion for our craft. We strive for three things – to be inspired, creative and unique.”

While enjoying lunch and coffee with Helen from Doily Days, she asked me where the name Real Green Dress came from...

Well we all like to do our bit for the environment (I’ve yet to meet a customer who doesn’t) but when it comes to planning a wedding, being green isn’t always easy. The ‘Real’ in Real Green Dress is a good start, wearing real vintage dresses must be the most glamorous side of recycling. But what about the ‘Green’? All our brides’ and attendants’ dresses are cleaned before sale using the least invasive treatment methods possible. This is not the easiest or quickest choice

but better for your dress and for the environment. And it doesn’t stop there. I try to be as green as possible in all aspects of the business. You’ll find recycled mannequins and low energy lights in our shop. There’s no heating or air conditioning either, which is all part of good sustainable ‘preventive conservation’ practice. I’m not wasting my years of museum training either! Mail order dress boxes and boutique carrier bags are reusable and printing is done with environmentally friendly inks on sustainable card. It costs more but I’m happier with it that way.

Honeymoon Top TipsCaroline Sumners from Fifty One Degrees shares her ideas for honeymoon hot spots, whatever the season:

Spring: Morocco is just a 4 hour flight, the weather is perfect in spring, and there are a great selection of riads for the ultimate in luxury.

Summer: The Tanzanian island of Zanzibar can be combined with a safari and has the added advantage of no jet lag. Closer to home, THE PIG in Hampshire’s New Forest is perfect for a ‘mini moon’.

Autumn: In October, you can’t beat North & South Carolina. Stunning beaches and laid back southern hospitality make this east coast gem a must see. Closer to home, try one of the Greek islands – we just love Domes of Elounda on Crete – truly amazing.

Winter: Cosy up together and visit the Northern lights.

This might sound like a strange thing to say at the beginning of an article, but Petal & Feast aren’t for everyone. If you’re looking for formal, we probably won’t be your bag. We don’t do black uniforms or tiny fancy stacks of caviar and micro-herbs.

If however, you are going for a more laid back kind of day – then Roll up! Roll up! Step this way... The Petal & Feast catering service is exactly what you are looking for.

Our food is hearty, generous and wholesome and served up in a relaxed, rustic, vintage-y style. Antipasti sharing platters, artisan breads studded with olives and sundried tomatoes, award-winning Sussex Cheeses. Our ‘Superior Sussex Spit Roasts’, with big bowls of fresh salad or garlic and rosemary infused lamb, go down a treat as the main meal – with a good dose of the Petal & Feast gang to serve it all up. Perfect for a rustic summer wedding. ‘The Lesser Spotted Perfect Ploughman’s’ menu can be pimped to take it from a bread

and cheese snack right through to a lavish picnic-style main course. Our cream teas are served on pretty vintage china to give that quintessential English garden party feel and our ‘Super Suppers’ are perfect for that casual ‘dinner with friends and a good laugh over a bottle of wine’ type feel.

Menus tend to give a nod towards the season – since we try to use local produce where we can, our food usually reflects what’s growing and plentiful. We are doing a cosy autumnal wedding this year with hot pies and posh mash – perfect for warming you up on a crisp autumn day. Every couple, and therefore every wedding, is different – one size doesn’t fit all round here.

Our lovely gang are our secret weapon – if you knew them you would want them to come to your wedding anyway. They are all chosen for their capable natures and happy dispositions, and will help to make your day go swimmingly; helping Grandma find her chair and cushion and making sure the tiny

people have got their ice cream, before setting up a Pimms and lemonade stand faster than you can say Mary Poppins.

So, if you are planning a fun, relaxed day, we are the gang for you.

Long Furlong BarnLong Furlong Barn is a beautiful Grade II Listed granary nestled in the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. Having been used as the farm’s grain store since the 1880s, the building was facing agricultural redundancy. Not wanting to lose the barn, the family spent two years restoring and repairing it, seeking to expose its beautiful heritage and provide a unique wedding venue with rustic character.

Long Furlong offers three barns within the site. In the Granary Barn (the largest barn), the restoration has sympathetically retained the magnificent curved roof beams. The walls have been finished with a traditional limestone mix to enhance the rustic atmosphere. The barn has under floor heating and the lighting has been carefully chosen to show off the character of the stunning ceiling.

The Granary can comfortably seat up to 150 for your wedding breakfast, with delicious food provided by the exclusive caterers RED Anywhere

Catering. Daniel Clarke and his team provide a bespoke menu of stunning and imaginative food, creatively presented, sourced locally and freshly prepared on site.

Linked to The Granary is The Cart Shed, which is fully licensed for civil ceremonies and can accommodate 120 people. The building allows for a 20 metre aisle with the ceremony conducted directly in front of the breathtaking South Downs views. With wooden floors, air conditioning and beautiful bi-fold doors that open onto the sun-trap courtyard – it’s the perfect setting to say I do! In the evening, The Cart Shed is perfect for dancing whilst enjoying the bespoke “Red” bar or creating a relaxed chill-out zone for your guests.

For the bridal party, the South Barn Bridal Suite provides a luxurious retreat in which to relax and enjoy a glass of Nyetimber Classic Cuvée. The room boasts sofas, luxurious soft furnishings, pretty mirrors and a dressing table, not

forgetting the all important great lighting! The en-suite shower room is fully stocked with Temple Spa products and fluffy towels. There is a superb B & W Zeppelin speaker to listen to your favourite songs and the Tassimo coffee machine completes the boutique feel.

In addition to the three barns, there is beautiful outside space. The gated south facing courtyard, traditionally used for the turning of grain wagons, has been professionally landscaped and enclosed with a traditional flint wall hand-built by local craftsmen. This area provides a sheltered setting for summer drinks after your ceremony and throughout your reception. There is also the possibility of covering the courtyard with a marquee to provide for the vagaries of the British weather!

From The Cart Shed there is a lawned area with uninterrupted views of the South Downs National Park. The perfect backdrop for your wedding at one of Sussex’s newest venues.

Neil and I got engaged on Christmas Day 2012. We’d spoken about marriage for a long time so we quickly put plans into action for our October wedding. I work in the industry (as a wedding photographer) so it was easy to find suppliers we could trust.

We both love Halloween, Gothic-Victorian looks, black and anything Tim Burton-y so it was easy to decide on the theme for the day. We’ve decided to get married on a Thursday at Rhinefield House Hotel in the New Forest. It fares a lot cheaper to do it mid-week and this means we CAN have the big gothic mansion we want and not break the budget.

We found our bespoke rings online via Not On The High Street; neither of us wanted run-

of-the-mill rings and I’ve such tiny fingers (a size G wedding finger), I couldn’t find anything in the shop. They’re being handmade by a lady in Kent.

Our flower theme is autumnal/woodland/Halloween... so expect lots of pumpkins!

My wedding dress is being made bespoke. It’s black with a difference… and that is all I’m saying about the dress. You will have to wait and see! Neil’s outfit runs on the theme of Victorian Gothic and the dress code for our guests is evening wear/cocktail dress for the ladies and three-piece-suits for the gents. I found my shoes on a trip to Brighton, popped into Irregular Choice and hey presto! We also nipped into a well known cake shop in Brighton and ordered our cake too!

At Glastonbury last year we found some great decorative Halloween items. We had to stop ourselves from coming back with a car-load of stuff! We sourced items from all over the world via sites such as Etsy, eBay and Not On The High Street.

We decided, last autumn, to have an engagement shoot with a little difference. I found a local theatrical make-up artist who painted our faces to look like skulls (see photo!). We used our favourite image for our wedding invites.

See the next issue for photos of our spectacularly unique day…

Doily Days are partial to weddings, ice cream and quirky retro caravans, so imagine the excitement when Caravanilla drove onto the scene, combining all three. Chichester-based Caravanilla run their ice cream business from Olive, a beautifully restored 1960s Cheltenham Fawn caravan with a vintage feel inside and out. Olive is available for hire for weddings, birthdays, parties, fêtes or any kind of get together. Wherever she goes, Olive is guaranteed to make people smile; serving up organic ice cream with a sprinkling of nostalgia.

The caravan’s restoration was a six month labour of love completed over winter 2013 ready to take on the summer season. Charlie, Olive’s proud owner, wanted to serve up ice cream as it conjures

up sunny days and happy times, thus making a lovely environment in which to work, she also gets to visit some amazing places… completely different to her day job! Beautifully styled from top to toe, inspired by pretty posies, and the nostalgic welcoming feel of a friendly front room, Charlie describes Olive as: “the perfect office, flowery, pink and full of ice cream”. Let’s talk flavours! Vanilla has proved to be the most popular so far, closely followed by strawberry and champagne, banana, brandy butter and salted caramel. The British sourced mouth-watering selection doesn’t stop there; there’s everything from mint choc baby chip to clotted cream to cider sorbet. Not forgetting an array of homemade toppings including

popcorn, toffee sauce, chocolate ganache and meringues. Charlie takes great pleasure in watching adults experience a popping candy fix and the childhood memories it conjures up, and loves seeing the look on children’s faces when they take their first lick! Your guests will also be tempted by traditional ice cream floats and lashings of ginger beer and cloudy lemonade.

Covering mainly Hampshire, Sussex and Surrey, Caravanilla are happy to discuss venues and events a little further afield. For more information and to view Olive in all her retro glory, check out Caravanilla on Facebook www.facebook.com/Caravanilla or email them at [email protected]

Discussing interior/decor trends is a funny thing. By the time you read this, the things I have written about will either have been and gone and been taken over by the next big thing, or they will have grown in popularity so much that you are seeing them everywhere!

As an event and interior stylist, it is good to be aware of current trends, but never to diverge away from your own style too much or change for each new trend that’s passing.

Luckily for me, four things that are bang on trend right now happen to be things I love and fit my style perfectly!

Pineapples! This one is slightly confusing and no idea why they are so popular, but they’re fun, versatile and I like to paint them and group them.

Flamingos! These are growing in popularity, and ever since I bought Frederick (my flamingo prop) he is always the most popular item to hire. Hire several and hang direction signs from their necks!

Copper! This filtered strongly into the world of interior design this year and is starting to creep into event styling with copper jugs and pots starting to replace last year’s use of gold.

Finally, festoon lights! Ooh, who doesn’t like festoon lighting? These are now available in so many options. Perfect for indoor and outdoor weddings, no wonder everyone’s using them.

For flamingos, copper jugs and pots, festoon lighting and more, check out www.jasmineorchardstyling.com.

“The best part of the day was the ceremony. We had a humanist celebrant and she did such an amazing job. She asked us to both write some words and she incorporated these into her speech.”

“We asked our tailor to keep the colour and style of the suits secret so the first time we saw each other’s suit was when we walked down the aisle. He made sure they were different but complimentary.”

“We shared a pinterest page with our florist and stylist to express our ideas.”

“We both wanted a WOW wedding; it’s the biggest day of our lives and we wanted to really celebrate.”

“The hook-a-duck was a lot of fun. We’d written everyone’s name on a duck and as an ice-breaker we’d told our guests to find the person whose name was on the duck they’d hooked!”

“I’m originally from Brighton so we wanted something fun, colourful and to reflect our personalities and history. So the funfair theme seemed to fit this perfectly.”

“We really wanted a venue that would keep the dancing going and somewhere we could host a BBQ.”

A FamilyAffairToday’s weddings are less

about tradition and more about adding your own

personal stamp. So when you’re starting to plan and choose your suppliers, don’t forget to look a little closer to home.

When my sister, Sarah Jane, married Luke at Huntsham Court in Devon last August, they called on their crafty family to add WOW factor without blowing the budget.

Our brother is a graphic designer so he was asked to design the wedding stationery and create an illustration of the couple. This image was used across lots of the wedding elements from invites to stickers for the chilli jam favours.

I run my own craft business (Bets & Bobs), so I made the

bespoke bunting, cake toppers and vintage-look love signs. All the girls in the family spent Sunday afternoons getting crafty together.

Instead of a large wedding cake, SJ and Luke had a bake off. Our mum kicked things off by baking eight giant pavlovas for dessert on the Friday evening (we had Huntsham Court for the whole weekend). Our brother – also a fantastic cook – baked an array of delicious sponges (with a hand from Luke’s Mum and Nan!).

Here are Sarah Jane’s top tips to help with your planning:

1. Buy the table flowers in bulk and get the girls to help arrange them the night before. It’s a nice opportunity to spend time together and will save you money.

2. If you’ve got friends or family that like to bake, ask them if they want to contribute.

3. Don’t be shy. Ask friends and family to help with small jobs. Chances are they would love to be involved.

4. If you’ve got a friend who’s good with hair and make-up, ask if she’d be happy to help with yours on the day. You will have fun practicing and you’ll feel relaxed getting ready.

5. If you’ve got a style of wedding dress in mind and you can’t find it, or if you can’t afford the hefty price tag, don’t be afraid to create your own. Mine was bought from Monsoon and I got a dressmaker to add lace sleeves and details on the waistband and shoulders.

Mr & Mrs UniqueMr & Mrs Unique is a wedding directory, blog and online magazine that celebrates the unusual, the quirky, the interesting and above all, the unique aspects to weddings that so many couples seek these days.

Now a flourishing and highly successful directory featuring unusual wedding suppliers, Mr & Mrs Unique has brought together a colourful array of likeminded businesses; a blend of extraordinary, talented, crazy and downright amazing!

With everyone looking to find suppliers to give their day the WOW factor, we spend a lot of time searching for companies with extra sparkle! There are so many businesses that really think outside the box these days!

At the moment we love couples who are looking for different ways to feed their guests and the increase of amazing street food sellers and their unique trailers and vans.

We also love embracing beautiful seasonal flowers cut straight from British gardens, rather than getting them imported in.

Lastly we can’t forget some new favourites who have recently joined the directory, including a honeymoon yurt, a life-size unicorn cake filled with rainbow sponge, a vintage red horsebox that serves delicious wood-fired pizzas and a customised VW pop up bar/DJ booth!

We chat to founders Nathan and Zoe about their love for vintage, their existing events and what we can expect from their debut wedding fair.

Hi guys, I literally stumbled upon you at Ford car boot sale selling some of your amazing retro wares. You sold me a 60s mirror that I love for £2! How long have you been buying and selling vintage? We have been buying and selling vintage for about six years, we used to mainly deal with 40s and 50s items but have been drawn more towards the retro styles of the 60s and 70s for the last year or so – we just love retro!

When did you start running vintage fairs? Our first vintage fair was August 17th 2013 at The Ageas Bowl.

What do you love about vintage?A whole lotta things! The

designs, the colours, the patterns, the fact it was created in a time when it was new, when it was appreciated and exciting. Things were made to last forever, our throwaway society has no need to appreciate things in such a way, for tomorrow there will be something new. When I make a vintage purchase I love to think of how much it made the original owner smile. We love the style of clothing from the 50s and 60s – so simple and elegant, easy to wear and we love to wear clothing that’s unique. Our children have vintage Fisher Price toys that are as old as us but they are always favourites. We just feel at home around vintage!

Did you meet via your mutual love of vintage?Zoe: we actually met when Nathan’s brother moved in next door. I have always been a vintage girl and won Nathan

round to the idea that the only way is vintage!

Did you/are you planning to have a vintage wedding? We have been planning our vintage wedding for about 5 years! All the plans are there, now we just need the time to actually do it, next year is looking good but I think I said that last year... We were all set to have our vintage wedding when we discovered we were expecting Freddie so we had a vintage christening instead!

What inspired you to put on a vintage wedding fair?We just love running Yellow Vintage Fair, we enjoy making it so much more than just a fair and we wanted to apply the same concept to a wedding fair (with my many years of ideas for our own wedding). We’re putting on an event that is everything you could wish for at your

wedding and so much more. Not only to provide you with all the suppliers you need, but also give you that nostalgic feeling that makes your creativity flow.

What can we expect to see at your September wedding fair and future wedding events? At Something Blue Vintage Wedding Fair there will be a fabulous range of glorious vintage wedding suppliers, from jewellery to dresses, crockery hire to classic cars. Everything from campers and cakes to beauty. There will be live music throughout the day from fantastic nostalgic acts and there is a vintage tea room serving tea, cakes and hot food. Our aim, when people leave our event is for their heart to be singing to a vintage beat!

Any exciting exhibitors confirmed so far you can mention?

Included in our list of exhibitors are Soobird – the most beautiful handmade fascinators, Pretty Old Vintage displaying exquisite jewellery and hair accessories and Blossom and Bird with their stunning floral creations.

How often do you plan to hold the wedding fair? The wedding fair will take place four times a year in Southampton and Brighton.

Finally, what are the details for your first event? We’ll be there (with copies of this very magazine)!Something Blue Vintage Wedding Fair is being held on Sunday 14th September 2014 at The Ageas Bowl, Botley Road, West End, Southampton, Hampshire, SO30 3XH. Entry £2. See you there!

The mastermind behind Betty Booths is photographer Rene Solari. His two unique photo booths enable him to capture the party atmosphere at weddings.

The flagship and inspiration behind the business is Betty, Rene’s rare 1967 Commer Bluebird ‘Wanderer’ camper van. Commer was a British manufacturer that existed from 1905 to 1979. These vans were commonly used for camping, but also as post office vans and British Telecom vans. They were a common, and now

nostalgic sight, for those who grew up in the 60s and 70s. The van was redesigned inside to create a spacious, photo-friendly environment.

As well as Betty there is Berti, a hand-crafted wooden, indoor photo booth. Keeping with the vintage feel, the design inspiration for Berti came from iconic vintage cameras.

The booths may look vintage but they are kitted out with the latest technology to offer great lighting and amazing quality

photographs. You and your guests will have access to a wide range of props and unlimited photos are given out... they only take eight seconds to print! Want to make Betty more personalised and lively? Add your own playlist to get the van grooving!

The All Important First Dance...By Auntie Maureen

Gramophone and Vintage Music DJwww.auntiemaureen.info

Dance and you communicate between your body and your soul. Then dance with your beloved and you are connecting with his or her soul too. This is why a first dance expresses so much. Don’t fret about the crowd watching. Yes, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, plus backwards and in high heels, but she happened to practise. A lot! On your wedding day simply go with

the love expressed in a song’s lyrics and dream with your feet. This way you open up the dance floor. You can help this along by breaking off to each grab your mother- or father-in-law for a partner dance before you all break off again to grab the next set of parents until everyone has done his or her bit to bring guests onto the dance floor, in the space of two chosen songs. It matters that you choose these songs

yourself, as it’s your celebration. A good wedding DJ will work with you to see the venue, liaise to get the technical set-up right, ask for your musical direction plus look the part. To choose your wedding soundtrack, either follow your theme or accommodate everyone who might want to dance, young as well as old. This is the time in your special day when all the happy souls will be connecting.

The Glamour of a Bygone EraMeet Lola, the stunning Airstream-come-mobile 1920s lounge bar.

Lola’s proud owner is Sammy Goodall who also owns a creperie in Colliers Wood (www.belgianbrasserie.com) and collaborates as part of a 1940s singing trio (www.vivlabop.com). “I started to host jazz evenings at my restaurant about five years ago,” explains Sammy, “and it dawned on me that it was my favourite part of the business.” It took her a year to renovate the Airstream and now it boasts a bar with brass frontage, 1920s furniture, Prosecco on tap and props such as a Gramophone and chest of fur coats.

Sammy, who has also worked in interior design, explains that

Art Deco has always been her favourite era, “Lola’s seats are Aston Martin cream leather and her walls are lined with gold leaf and Villa Nova designer fabric”. She also has quite a thing for pineapples and they feature heavily in the company’s brand!

Not long launched, Deco Noir have already secured sponsorship from Veuve Clicquot and Peroni... and the future looks shiny bright too! Lola’s off to some amazing festivals in the summer and Sammy’s in talks with polo clubs and fashion events about VIP hospitality. Future plans also include a stretched grand piano bar and the acquisition of Maharaja tents.

An ideal solution for your wedding bar, and Lola is

available for hen parties too; sparkling afternoon tea, fully stocked bar, Gramophone music, a 10-15 minute massage and vintage dressing-up box with photography. The price is £120 per person (based on 20 people) – a hugely discounted rate for Deco Noir’s first year. They can also add a hat-making course including all the materials for another £20 per person.

As Deco Noir has recently launched, they’re doing a special offer for their first year – any bookings for events up until May 2015 will get FREE HIRE! All they ask is that the staff are paid and that a minimum is covered at the bar.

Mismatched Bridesmaids

The days of making your maids look like something a loo roll would be embarrassed to wear are over ladies! The best way to your bridesmaids’ hearts is to give them something stunning to wear on your wedding day.

While there is nothing wrong with finding a dress to suit all, why don’t you mix it up and get

your girls looking fabulous in mismatched outfits?

The idea is to style your maids in matching prints but various colours, the same dress in different shades or your chosen colour but the style is all different to match your maid’s personality! The important ladies in your life that you have chosen to be part of

your big day will most certainly not all be the same size and shape, so rather than trying to get them in a ‘one style fits all’ let them retain their individuality while being a part of the pack in these stunning dresses...

Cameras and films have always played a huge part in Irene Piera’s life. She shares her love for visuals through her work — capturing beautiful footage that will always have a place in couples’ hearts.

Videography is something not all couples consider but we believe you should think of a wedding film as an investment and focus on the memories you will preserve.

The thought and time that goes into organising a wedding is stitched together with love

and you will always want to hold onto those moments once the day is over. Being able to hear your mum’s laugh, see your dad’s nervous but proud expression as he walks you down the aisle or listen to your own voices trembling while you say your vows. You can’t capture that with stills. Having film as well as photography adds a completely new dimension to your memories.

On the day, keeping up with everything and everyone will be tricky and there will, of course, be moments you will miss.

Sometimes the tiniest details are the ones that matter the most and a wedding will be full of those precious moments – the only thing that stands between you and beautiful footage is a small step. Irene would be delighted to hear from you to discuss your big day.

The beauty sp tBy Amy Prifti

There are many places to look for inspiration when it comes to wedding day hair and make-up and it’s worth considering the overall style of your wedding before deciding on the look to go for.

When a bride first contacts me I ask her to search for hairstyles and looks she likes and to put all her ideas in a folder. I have my own Pinterest page to give brides a starting point:www.pinterest.com/amyprifti/

As well as Pinterest, I suggest you look at celebrity events such as the Bafta and Oscar award ceremonies to see if there are any particular styles you like. If you like a certain celebrity then Google images of her for inspiration.

Take your folder along to your stylist for your trial. Don’t worry about details such as ‘my hair isn’t long enough or thick enough’ for a certain style – you will be surprised by what can be achieved when it’s being done by a professional.

Your trial is an opportunity to try out a few different styles and looks. It is important to keep an open mind and take advice from your stylist.

Top tips for our trial: wash your hair the night before, don’t use straighteners if you’re hoping to achieve a curl (once hair has been straightened, it is very difficult to put movement back in), wear a white top similar to the colour of your wedding dress and bring along any hair accessories (tiara, hairclip, veil) that you will be wearing on the day.

Amy Prifti is a hair and make-up artist covering Sussex, Surrey, Kent and the South East of England. She has been awarded ‘Best For Weddings’ awards both regionally and nationally. You can visit her website at www.bridalmakeupbyamy.co.uk
