“It isn’t the challenges that we face in our dog training that makes us different from one another. It’s our responses to those challenges. In my training, I am always looking to create a rich reinforcement history for what it is I want my dog to DO.” Susan Garrett

Your Gem from Session One Gems Shared About Session One “When we come from a place of limited vision, our job is done. Mind.Blown, lol! I can see how it's so much "easier" to shirk the responsibility for our dog's continued education when we believe "that's just the way they are" rather than realizing that WE are the limited one in the relationship. I realize that this is a dog masterclass, but this aha moment REALLY drove home that it's MY VISION that is off, not my animals AT ALL!” Little-Farm On The-Corner

“ Don’t limit your dog by labelling them as problem that cannot be fixed. You have to build the layers to help them and your partnership grow and then even the sky won't be your limit ”

Jennifer

Session Two How many different rewards would you use in a typical training session?

________________________________________________________________________

“Our dogs are a reflection of the understanding we have about dog training. We are a reflection of the dog training mentors we have had. Our students are a reflection of our ability to teach.” Susan Garrett

Negative Bias Negative bias is something wired into us as humans. It’s a survival mechanism. We are wired to look at things from a place of “don’t” and for what is wrong. Once we strive to look at what is good, what is right, and from what we DO want, we can help our dogs.

ABC’s of Dog Training (Remember to Download Your Dog’s ABC Journal) Antecedent: What happens immediately before (it could be a trigger, a cue, a distraction like a bunny).

Behaviour: The behaviour of the dog (that we can describe).

Consequence: What happened to the dog immediately after.

Antecedent Behavior Consequence What happens immediately before. The behavior of the dog. What happened to the dog immediately after.

Your dog alerts to a cat. Your dog lunges on leash. You pull back on the leash.

Guests coming into the house. Your dog jumps on the guest. Dog is reinforced by social interaction with your guests.

“When you do ABC, you can figure out how to back track any behaviour and see how to fix it in a very positive way.” Susan Garrett

Behaviour: The behaviour of the dog (that we can describe). Consequence: What happened to the dog immediately after.

Your Gem from Session Two Gems Shared About Session Two

“Gem is that Good ABC analysis is a way of building better empathy which in turn improves successes of both the teacher and learner.” Carolyn

“Understanding antecedents is not only the key to success, but I appreciated that it was taught as the way to RESPECT our dog’s perspective. ” Jen

“We have the ability to turn negative bias around into gratefulness...if we are looking for what is good, we reside in gratefulness. Everything my dog does teaches me about teaching him if I’m “present” and mindful . Thanks.” Tamara

“ABC is not as simple as it sounds, and yet it is. How we look at the behavior helps dictate how to find the positive method to changing or obtaining a behavior.”

The “Oh No, What Is It?!” Game Be sure to review the video before playing the game with your dog. You will need treats your dog loves.

• Get your dog excited so he is jumping on you.

• Wait until your dog is off you.

• As soon as his paws are off you, say the word “search” and drop a cookie on the ground for your dog.

It’s important to say the word “search” before you drop the cookie on the floor for your dog.

Play the game so you get to say “search” and drop around 3 cookies, then end the session. You can use a word other than “search” but use it only for food. If you use a toy, use a different word. We want our dogs to grow the understanding that the only time to look for food on the ground is when they hear ”search” for permission. We’ll be building on this game in upcoming sessions!

Game Q&A Q: I don’t want my dogs eating things off the floor, can I play this game?

A: Part of your dog’s education is to give your dog a word to let him know “you now have permission to eat something on the ground”. Review the Session Four video for why!

Session Two Notes

Your Gem from Session Three Gems Shared About Session Three

“I must believe in my ability to train my dog and believe in my dog's capability to learn what I will teach him. With this positive mindset shift, I can move us beyond any limitations I have placed on my dog's ability to change.” Barbara

“Whatever we visualize is what becomes our reality so we would save ourselves great troubles if we focused on what we want instead of what we fear.” Katrina

“I have to believe my dog is capable of achieving the desired outcome, but I also have to believe I am capable of teaching it. If I believe my dog is limited, then he / she already is. From now on I will ensure I only train when I am fully committed and my dog is fully conscious and ready to join in, and we both believe the sky is the limit - my dog's mood and reactions are a reflection of my own.” Sue

Foundation Layer of the ItsYerChoice Game Get your dog’s consciousness up to a place where he wants to play. Get your dog excited. You could start with the “Oh No, What Is It?!” game so your dog is diving for treats on the floor, or play a game of tug.

• Have treats your dog loves in a container. • Sit in a chair and show your dog the treats.

• When you dog is doing anything other than putting his face in the treats, say “search” and drop a treat on the ground for him.

• If your dog goes to take a treat from the container, put the lid on.

• Remove the lid as soon as your dog moves his nose out of the treats.

• You can wait a until your dog offers you something like a ‘sit’ reward that with saying “search” and dropping a cookie.

Your Gem from Session Four Gems Shared About Session Four

“Failure is a good thing! It helps me to know what I can do differently when working with my dog so we can both succeed. Failure means I'm trying - not giving up!” Brynn

“My gem for today is, learning to be mindful to the tone of my voice, to positively teach with patience.. to set dogs up for success!.” Christina

“If you stay in the place of judgement you can't even try to understand your learner and help them with whatever problem they might have because you are stuck inside your mindset which limits your vision and your abilities as a trainer. Moving to the place of compassion opens your mind to solutions.” Joanna

“"Dog training is a template for your journey in life." I love this one too- because I never really thought of it like that and it is making me think about my dog training differently and I LOVE anything that makes me think a bit. So thanks for that! Jo
