The four sets of tables in this report provide data as of fall 1996 on former CE students' characteristics, persistence to subsequent semesters, test scores, and grades. Highlighted findings include the following: (1) 806 former CE students matriculated in fall 1996; (2) 45% of these students were Latino and another 35% were Asian; (3) 56% had completed between 11 and 30 units, 35% had completed between 1 and 10 units, and fully 18% had completed no units; (4) of the 453 former CE students who were new to credit courses in spring 1996, 49% persisted to fall 1996; (5) for the 1,045 former CE students who took composition assessment tests between fall 1993 and fall 1996, 76% were placed into the lowest level English course; (6) former CE students comprised 6% of the college credit enrollment in fall 1996 and accounted for 24,658 course enrollments over the 7 semesters between fall 1993 and fall 1996; and (7) 64% of these 24,658 credit enrollments resulted in a passing or credit grade. RSC Continuing Education (Non-Credit) Students.Who Matriculate to RSC College Credit Coursework

June, 1997Fifth Edition

Recommendations:

1. Many should be commended for their efforts that result in the large number ofCED students who matriculate successfully to college credit coursework..Endourage former CED students who have newly transitioned to college credit

to'eftroll in freshman experience learning communities (because so many are

enrolled in basic skills Classes and aremost likely at-risk students).Track fromer CED students further into their academic progress to determine

the number who are awarded degrees, certificates, and transfer eligibility

status.

Summary of Findings: This study shows that a large number of former.ContinuingEducation students matriculate to college credit coursework each semester (Table 2); Sincethis study's inception in Fall 1994, the highest number of formet Continuing Educationstudents (806) matriculated in Fall 1996. Almost all of these matriculting students areLatino or Asian (68-81%). In Fall 1996, former CE students comprise at least 6% of thecollege credit enrollment and 24,658 course enrollments at RSC for the seven semestersstudied. Their academic progress is comparable to that of the overall credit studentpopulation. These findings are supportive of the value of Continuing Education program'sas a means of bridging students to postsecondary education.

Study Purpose: To identify those students enrolled in college credit coursework who had been

Continuing Education (CE) (non-credit) students, and to study their academic progress. This

report is newly updated with Fall 1996 semester student enrollment and performance data.

Study Method: Former RSC CE students who enrolled in RSC college credit coursework wereidentified as those who either 1) stated on their college credit applidation that. RSC. Continuing

Education was their last school of attendance (There are two opportunities on the applidation fOr

students to do so), or 2) who had a social security number which matched one from the

Continuing Education "student history file."

...Six percent of collegecredit students areformer RSC CE. students.

Number of Students Who Matriculated: Table 1shows that 1024 former CE students were enrolled incollege credit classes in Fall 1993. In Fall 1996, 1751

were enrolled, of whom 806 were new credit students (inthat they had not been enrolled in RSC credit courses

since the inception of this study in Fall 1993). Six percent of college credit students (Fall1996) were former RSC CE students. Almost all of the students identified for this study hadmost previously been students in Continuing Education's High School Subjects program.Thirteen percent of the Fall 1996 (former RSC CE students) new students were enrolled solely inCounseling classes (more than one); 2% were enrolled solely in a single Counseling class thatsemester.

Student Characteristics: Table 1 shows that most (75%) of these students are either Asian orLatino. Three-quarters of the students identified English as the language that they mostcommonly spoke. Fifty-nine percent aspire to obtain a BA/BS degree!

Student Credit Academic Progress: Of the former CEstudents enrolled in Fall 1996, 35% had completed 1-10units, and 56% had completed 11 to 30 units. Eightpercent completed more than 60 units. However, 18% ofthe Fall 1996 new students completed zero units.Cumulative grade point average distributions are alsoprovided.

49% percent of theformer CE students (newto college credit in Spring1996) persisted to Fall1996...compared to theoverall collegepersistence rate of 57%(Fall 1996 to Spring 97rate).

However, 18% of the Fall1996 new students(former CE) completedzero units!

Persistence (Table 2): Of the 453 former CE studentswho were new to college credit courses in Spring 1996,49% persisted to the subsequent semester in Fall 1996.Although this is somewhat lower than the overall collegepersistence-to-second-semester rate of 57% (Fall 1995rate), many former CE students return to RSC after anabsence of 1 or more semesters (21% of study sampletotal).

Assessed Basic Skills (Table 3): Of all the former CEstudents from Fall 1993 to Fall 1996, 1405 had taken theCBAPT Composition test, and 2014 had taken the TELDfor college credit course level placement purposes. Of theCBAPT-takers, 76% were placed in English N60 (the

lowest level) and 17% into English 061 level. Of the TELD-takers, 59% were referred to theContinuing Education ESL level, including 49% who qualified for ESL 047 or 048. Math courseplacement test scores are also provided.

Course Grades (Table 4): During the seven semesters from Fall 1993 to Fall 1996, formerCE students comprised 24,658 college credit course enrollments. The largest number ofcourse enrollments were, in descending order, in English as a Second Language, Math, SpeechCommunications, Office Technology, Reading, Counseling, and English. Of those 24,658enrollments, 64% resulted in a successful, A,B,C or Cr grade. This completion rate iscomparable to that for all credit students in all courses, 65% (Spring 1996). Fifty-six percent ofthe former CE Latino students enrolled in ESL received successful grades (compared to theoverall success rate of 52%); 75% of the former CE Asian students enrolled in ESL received

all credit students; Math, Chemistry, ESL, Welding, and Pharmacy represent such disciplines.Grade distributions by subject are also provided just for new Fall 1996 students in
