Rapid social changes accompanied by new modes of thinking have in-creased the demand for relevant social science research. The knowledgeexplosion has been acutely felt in the social sciences and has led to thedevelopment of innovative research techniques and the introduction of newinstructional systems.
This directory of Social Science/Social Studies research, prepared byResearch Associates Anna R. Barrett and George S. Garnett of my staff, illus-trates the wide range of activities that have been and are receiving Federalsupport ad inistered by the Bureau of Research. As such, it should be usefulto researchers, administrators, curriculum directors, supervisors, informationspecialists, professional organizations, and teachers of social studies. Infor-mation acquired from these projects should be used by those who are de-veloping sound, well-rounded curriculums to prepare youth for living in aworld where education has become such a valuable and extensive enterprise.
Glenn C. Boerrigter, Acting Director,Division of Elementary and Secondary
Education Research.

introductionThe U.S. Office of Education has maintained a continuing interest in
stimulating research in the field of social science curriculum development. This directory represents an effort to keep abreast of current trends in thesocial and behavioral sciences with the objective of meeting the curriculumneeds of the educational community. The approach has been to draw uponthe vast resources of the various social science disciplines and the insightsgained fro scholarship to assist teachers, supervisors, and administratorsin better understanding the complex societal factors which characterizemodern life. The projects include studies in anthropology, sociology, politicalscience, history, geography, foreign area studies, economics, internationalrelations, and environmental education.
The directory is not intended to be exhaustive. Moreover, many of themost critical issues confronting American education today are treated within
the context of dynamic social, political, economic, and technical change suchas the impact of cultural and ethnic diversity and the changing pattern ofrace relations on current educational practices; the sociopolitical conse-quences of rapid urbanization, population growth, and social disorganization;the adaptation of new teaching strategies to social science curriculum; theconflict betoken alienation and the necessity of inculcating positive civicattitudes; the continuing challenge of totalitarianism to democracy and freesocieties in the international arena; and the role of the United States as aworld leader.
Most of the documents listed in this directory are obtainable throughthe Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), the Bureau of Re-search's national information network designed to serve the educationalco munity by aking available the latest educational research and relatedmaterials. ED (report) and EP (project) numbers are the accession/identifica-tion numbers assigned to the documents as they are processed by ERIC. Thefull texts of all final reports of the projects listed are available in eitherhard copy or microfiche from the ERIC Document Reproduction Service(ERRS).
To obtain such documents, write to: ERIC Document ReproductionService, National Cash Register Co., 4936 Fairmont Avenue, Bethesda, Md.20014.
Those entries without ERIC accession numbers are either still ongoingor were not selected by the various ERIC clearinghouses throughout thecountry to be included in the document service. In these cases, direct contactwith the principal investigators listed is recommended.
