ABSTRACTThiS research report presents findings from a survey
questionnaire designed to obtain Information about current universityprograms in extracurricular athletics. The survey encompassesresponses from 29 colleges: 11 in British Columbia, 8 in otherCanadian provinces, and 10 in the United States. The responsesindicate a general trend toward basketball and volleyball as the mostcommon intramural activities for men. Badminton and volleyball arethe most common for women as co-recreational activities. Basketballis the most common activity among men and women in intercollegiateathletics. From individual responses, however, other activitiesappear at least as often as basketball. Two tables of data arepresented, citing the most frequently mentioned activities forintramural and intercollegiate athletics by men and women from thethree different geographic areas. The appendix includes a samplequestionnaire. (BBB)

Summary of Responses:
The responses to the items were as follows:
1. Does your institution give credit courses in physical education?
No
(Indicate the number of
Range of the Numbercourses.)
Institutions Yes No Response of Courses Offered
British Columbia 5 6 0 0 - 28 (Median 15)Other Provinces 2 5 0 0 - 25 (Median 13)U. S. A. 9 0 1 1 -104 (Median 44)
Total 16 11 1 0 -104
From this sample, it would appear that American institutions give credit coursesin physical education while their counterparts in Eastern Canada generally do not.In British Columbia about one-half of the institutions offer credit courses inphysical education. It is also clear, too, that the American schools offer a greaternumber of credit courses in physical education.
(The differences among the three groups are significant at the .01 level; 9.79.)
2
2. Does your institution give noncredit courses in physical education?(Indicate the number of courses.)
No Range of the NumberInstitutions Yes No Response of Courses Offered
British Columbia 1 9 1 0- 3
Other Provinces 2 5 0 0- .0U. S. A. 2 6 2 0- 6
Total 5 20 3 0 - 20
Only a small proportion of the institutions offer "non-credit" physical education and thosethat do, give very few courses. The differences among the groups are not significant.
3. Does your institution have an intramural program of athletics?
NoInstitutions Yes No Response
British Columbia 8 3 0
Other Provinces 7 0 0
U. S. A. 9 1 0
Total 24 4 0
Most of the institutions have intramural athletics. In British Columbia, three of thenewer colleges have no such programs; one of these noted that it had no gymnasium atpresent, and that it hopes to have a small intramural program next year. Here again, thedifferences among the groups are not significant.
4. Does your institution participate in intercollegiate athletics?
NoInstitutions Yes No Response
British Columbia 9 2 0
Other Provinces 7 0 0
U. S. A. 10 0 0
Total 26 2 0
Except for two colleges in B. C. , all of the institutions participate in intercollegiateathletics. The differences among the groups are not significant.

While there are differences in the popularity of certain activities due to location orcultural differences, the same trends were present for British Columbia, otherprovinces and United States colleges. For intramural athletics, basketball andvolleyball are the most common activities for men, badminton and volleyball forwomen and as co-recreational activities. For intercollegiate athletics the most commonactivity for men and women is basketball, however, on an individual group basis otheractivities appear at least as often as basketball. For example, colleges from otherCanadian provinces marked basketball, curling and ice hockey an equal number of timesfor men. Tables III and IV indicate the most frequently cited activities for intramuralathletics and intercollegiate athletics by sex and by location.
