Document of the Month Godrej & Boyce was the first in India to manufacture a refrigerator way back in 1958. This was Mr. Naoroji P. Godrej’s pet project after the manufacture of typewriters that started in 1955.The idea of refrigeration in the domestic space was new to India, a market which was used to buying as much vegetable and meat as was needed each day. Therefore, with the manufacture of the first Indian refrigerator, Godrej had a task on their hands to introduce not just a product, but a new ideology into people’s homes. The first product- a 7-cubic foot model, had a white enamel exterior and a porcelain interior with a half freezer and an automatic temperature control system. The refrigeration unit was initially supplied by the General Electric Company and by 1962, it went on to be manufactured in India. In 1968, another model of 225 litres with a full freezer was produced. The next model of 165 litres capacity, Model P, was released in 1970. It had a table top, aluminium and glass shelf and a vegetable crisper. Through various campaigns, Godrej succeeded in finding place in the kitchens of the Indian households. The document of this month is an evidence of the success of the campaign outnumbering the other new entrants in the market. This circular from July 1965 talks about a test comparing three refrigerator brands - Godrej, Allwyn and Kelvinator.
