This issue marks an exciting time for us here at Wiltel Marine. Bavaria Yachtbau has launched a new corporate identity which represents the future direction of the company. As a representative of some major boating brands we can only be as effective as the products we promote. What makes the Bavaria brand so exciting is the fact that they have introduced a new family of power boats and yachts. These are the follow-on to the introduction of the DEEP BLUE 46, introduced in the previous issue. They have joined forces with BMW Designworks USA (part of the BMW Group), and Farr Yacht Design to develop a full range of models. These designs immediately started winning various international awards and nominations. We are very excited about this new range and the first SPORT 38 has already arrived in Cape Town. Over the next few months we will see the introduction of additional new models in the powerboat and yachting range.

Aicon has also launched a new 82 OPEN. This is the largest OPEN in the range. It was revealed in Cannes, and we were fortunate enough to catch a glimpse. Read more about this exciting new design from this well known Italian yard.

This issue also marks the beginning of the boating season. We look forward to an exciting season with a number of new boats arriving on our shores.

the design conceptBavaria has received accolades from the press, industry and the customers about the new styled sport cruisers designed in co-operation with BMW Designworks USA, a subsidiary of the BMW group. The first model to be launched was the Deep Blue 46. This model featured on the front covers of Dockside and Leisure Boating in South Africa. The model was also awarded the prestigious European Yacht of the year. This award is significant, as it is an European award with an independent panel of journalists and industry experts, and it is not country specific. The Deep Blue 46 was a major step for Bavaria, as it is the largest power boat in their current range. The next step was then to “compress” the key design elements into the replacement for the top selling 27 SPORT. The new model was the SPORT 28. The boat set new standards in terms of interior lay-out and use of space with a separate enclosed aft cabin. The boat was

also nominated as a finalist for the European Yacht of the year competition. Bavaria then set it’s goal on introducing the Deep Blue Coupe and Flybridge models.

The response for the new styling was so overwhelming that Bavaria had to accelerate the introduction of more models to complement the smallest and largest new designs. This brings us to the all new SPORT 38. “The immediate uptake has been unbelievable”, says Willie Truter, Managing Director of Wiltel Marine. We are fortunate to have sold one of the first ones in South Africa. The interesting thing is that the classic series and the new designs now offer the customers two totally opposing design concepts. And both designs are still doing well in the market place. On the one hand we have a timeless well proven design with the classic series and a break from the traditional with the new range. “We are seeing manufacturing capacity running at pre-recession levels”, says Geoff Tregaskis, Sales Manager at Wiltel Marine.

more about the Sport 38The new SPORT 38 design lines follow those of the Deep Blue 46 with an evolutionary hull design with more free board, creating a lot of head room in the cabins below. In terms of size the 38 presents itself as a much bigger boat when you first see it. This is without compromising on the sportiness of the boat. The design offers very clean lines.

Stepping onto the boat the large double sun lounger is the first thing you notice. This together with Bavaria’s optional hydraulic lift stern platform creates a great area for when you are out at anchor. Your water toys can be easily lifted in and out of the water and the extended swim platform and sun lounger offers a vast social play area. The new beige coloured upholstery creates a warm

contrast with the white fiberglass in the cockpit. On the port side there is a U-shaped seating area with a well appointed wet bar on the opposite side. Opposite the skippers seat on the port side is a very cleverly designed “seating option”. I have always noted that sometimes one of the guests on board just needs a comfortable area to lean against while at speed to chat to the

skipper. Bavaria has optimized this space by offering a combination of a seat and a supported fully upholstered area. Another design problem facing designers is that a sun lounger on the bow always separates the people between the stern, bow and cockpit social areas. Bavaria cleverly overcame this problem by having the double sun lounger, seating area and a further curbed sun lounger on the port side. This sun lounger is also protected against the wind when cruising since it is tucked in behind the windscreen. This whole design really cements the whole social and entertainment area and keeps everyone together. Truly an amazing feat on a boat of this size.

The cockpit position offers a very ergonomic design. All the instruments are placed directly in front of the skipper. The complementary equipment like the Bow thruster control, switches and maybe your VHF radio can then be placed on the port side of the raised steering wheel column. The raised column below the instruments will then house the navigational display

at just the correct angle for best visibility. Clearly a lot of thought has gone into this layout.

Below deck, the new BAVARIA offers better quality, functionality and comfort. A modern ambience where one feels at home immediately and the logical room divisions within an ergonomic design set new standards.

In the cabin you have an option of various floor and wood colours. The colours have been selected to offer a contrast between cupboards and flooring layout. For example with the lighter interior cupboards the boat comes with a dark flooring. The lighter flooring is complemented by the mahogany cupboards. All the finishes are in the new fineline matt finish. The aft cabin offer 2 separate bunks. One which has back rest support. The aft bunk can therefore be used as a couch also. This is complemented by the seating area on the port side. The entrance to the cabin offers full height standing room.

One of the design features which you will find on all the new boats is the tinted flush mount deck hatches

and port holes. The port holes are found all over the deck and this really brightens up the cabins. There is also lots of storage space with cupboards and Bavaria’s trademark pigeonhole cupboards.

The head includes a toilet, basin and full shower. The sunken basin is mounted below the corian top which has a lip at the back to keep all the loose items in place while at sea. There is also additional storage in a cupboard above the basin. The shower offers a shower head which can also be used as a handheld and can therefore be used in the seated position.

everyone. This way everything is close by and everyone can enjoy the sociable experience. On the SPORT 38 the galley layout allows for 2 people to easily work in the galley at the same time side by side. The large sunken stainless steel basin, work area and 2 plate hob is in a L-shaped design. Behind the work area there is ample storage with a number of shelves and storage cupboards. A porthole also provides ample light on the work area during the day. The area is easily to keep clean with an integrated waste bin and corian top.

The seating area is situated on the opposite port side of the galley. The layout of the galley and seating area allows for easy walk through between the cabins and head. As always there is a lot of storage space behind the seated area complimented with a large full length cupboard and shelving.

The forward cabin has a full width double sleeper.

By using the full width instead of just placing a centre island double bed there, Bavaria has been able to create the feeling of a very big cabin. There is also a full-length cupboard and seating areas. The large porthole on the bow of the boat provides ample lighting. There is also reading lights conveniently placed on either side of the forward bulkhead.

As with all Bavaria boats the SPORT 38 offers exceptional value for money without compromising on quality. A major benefit, as a result of production efficiencies and purchasing power from one of the world’s largest serial production facilities. The shipyard has one of the most state-of-the-art serial production facilities for yachts worldwide. From hull lamination to final delivery, the yachts pass various assembly stations covering a distance of more than six kilometers. High volume production does not only mean higher cost-

effectiveness but also better quality. With an annual manufacturing capacity of more than 3000 yachts, the 650 employees benefit from learning these repetitive production techniques. Furthermore, there is a large degree of automation that guarantees a consistently high quality and avoids quality and production problems. Examples for this are assembly stations, lamination halls with permanent humidity and temperature control, CNC devices and robots as well as an automated varnishing line and additional uV drying.

BAVARIA applies standards that are considerably more rigorous than required by law. The GL Yacht Plus Certification, a voluntary yet strict certification process that far exceeds EU requirements offering an even greater degree of security, can be taken as an example. Not a single yacht leaves the shipyard without undergoing an additional thorough testing apart from the ongoing

quality assurance that is part and parcel of the production process. The yachts are exclusively manufactured at the central production site in Germany.

The Aicon 82 Open is a unique combination of class, attention to detail, comfort, technology and innovative design. Its line infringes on the conformity of space, recreating an environment which is ideally open and functional. Sailing can now be done while being totally immersed in contemporary comfort.

The Aicon 82 Open has been conceived as a yacht with innovative systems. It has an integrated system of domotics and onboard monitoring. The Aicon 82 is characterized by a centralized system of electrical utilities and functions, and of the electrical parameters of the hydraulic systems.

This system has numerous additional functions. One such is the automatic management of the onboard power supply and the option to choose which utilities to supply via the inverter. This includes the complete configuration and personalization of the controls, and a simple management of the alarms with

automatic safety systems. The system, conceptualized by the Engineering

department of the Aicon Group, has been conceived so as to optimize weights and dimensions with the utmost consideration to reliability and safety, opting for sturdiness and redundancy for the critical elements, while conforming to statutory emergency procedures.

The Aicon 82 can be distinguished by its windows that can open and its hard electric top. While on the deck area this yacht creates the impression of being in a completely vast open space, as if you are a part of the sea. This area is also in total sync with the living and cockpit areas.

The insertion of the stainless steel inlay completes the broadside. The continual side window with its characteristic mixed-line form (which is indicative of the interior layout) and the large round open able portholes of

the master-cabin, is a demonstration of Aicon’s rigorous stylistic coherence.

The purity of its forms, the elegance of its proportions and the search for “elongated lines” interprets the sporty character of this vessel. The streamlined external lines of the boat is recaptured in the design of the interior. The two tone wooden essence runs throughout the layout, emphasizing continuity. A layer of dark wood, as if it were a continuous ribbon, runs along the entire length of the broadside of the main deck. The streamlining also runs through the sequence which seems to join the windshield with the skylight (equipped with an interior curtain) and the convertible hard top.

open SpacesAll the outside spaces on the Aicon 82 Open have been

conceived and equipped to experience every moment of the cruise in complete relaxation and with the maximum comfort.

From the stern platform, two staircases, with teak steps, lead to the stern area, which is connected to the spacious bow sunbathing area by two broad passage ways. It is the ideal place to spend convivial moments sheltered from the elements. It contains a comfortable open-air dinette, a sunbathing area with a sofa and small table. The Aicon 82 Open is fitted with a multifunctional cabinet with a wet bar, mini fridge and an electric barbecue grill, all arranged to appease any requests guests may have.

stainless steel sliding door, one enters the living area. It is an elegant, comfortable environment characterized by refined interiors, realized with the utmost care and attention to detail in the Aicon tradition. Large picture windows give a complete view of the sea and ensures an abundance of light in this area.

The main deck has a large social area with an L-shaped sofa and dinette seating for eight persons. Opposite, in addition to another double seat sofa, there is a stow-away lCD TV and on the left a state of the art electric bar cabinet, equipped with everything for enjoying an aperitif.

The comfortable double seat helm station, which is accessorized with the most modern nautical instrumentation technology, is located to the left of the salon. It is lavishly styled, enriched by classic blends of teak, oak and precious fabrics.

The cabins have been designed so as to guarantee that each area has its own privacy and comfort. Two large open able portholes, which is the signature stylistic element of the entire Aicon range, lights up the master cabin located amidship. The cabin also has a beautiful table/desk, a spacious wardrobe and an elegant en-suite bathroom with a shower.

The two guest cabins with double beds, and en-suite bathrooms and the VIP cabin with its double bed and extra bathroom is located at the extremity of the yacht.

The crew quarters consists of two cabins (one of which has a double bed) and a separate bathroom. It is located at the stern and is accessible by a ramp located inside the vessel to starboard of the living area. Upon request, it is possible to substitute one of the two cabins with a small galley and dinette area and position a cabin for a hostess, usually dedicated to the galley.

amount of uncertainty as to what procedures or course of action that needs to be followed. We shall set out a clear list of procedures to follow so that the insurers will be able to settle your claim efficiently and accurately.

■ Be careful not to alter the condition of the damaged property until the Insurers say that you may

■ Notify the police as soon as reasonably possible of loss or damage caused by theft or malicious damage. There may also be times that you are obligated to advise the police in respect of maritime accidents

■ Details of the loss, damage or injury■ Any claim against you (Where you may be at fault)■ Inquest, prosecution or public enquiry■ Forward any summons, legal process or any other

Marinethe insurers will be under no obligation to pay any losses

■ In the event a person on board being injured or dying the following procedures must be adhered to:

■ All certificates, information and evidence must be provided at your expenses or at the expense of any claimant in the form or nature required

■ The insured person may have to undergo further medical examination required by the insurer at the insurers expense

■ In the event of death of the insured person the insurers are entitled to have a post mortem examination done at their expense

■ Always ensure that you and your craft are correctly certificated, crewed and equipped to comply with SAMSA safety requirements – your insurance cover may depend on this.

■ If you are immobilized at sea and need to be towed back to port, try to agree a reasonable rate or price for the tow with an assisting vessel first. Obviously, if you are in immediate danger you should take whatever assistance is available. It is to your (and thus your insurer’s benefit) to reward persons for assisting you but beware of opportunists who, after the event, make unreasonable demands for high payments against the threat of attaching your boat.

■ Large or complex claims may require the intervention of a

marine surveyor who will then issue a report to your insurer. The function of the surveyor is to establish the cause and cost of the claim and his findings should be impartial.

The prudent course of action to take when you do suffer a loss is to inform your Broker or Insurer as soon as possible, if they are not accessible due to circumstance, try to keep a copy of this article at hand, and you will find that the settlement of your loss will be dealt with more effectively and settlement made timeously.

BAVARIA YACHTS IS DElIGHTED TO ANNOuNCE THE introduction of the new Cruiser 45. Continuing the exciting collaboration with Farr Yacht Design and

BMW Designworks USA (part of the BMW Group), the new Cruiser 45 retains the benefits of construction quality, performance and value, while also introducing new and innovative design aspects. The new model offers an “optimized, modern bow with sporty performance along with a spacious interior concept.” Many of the features have been taken from the Cruiser 55 and will ensure the 45 is another success story for Bavaria Yachts.

Bavaria Yachts have been making waves since their recent introduction of the new Cruiser 55. The combination of three of the strongest partners in design and manufacturing (Farr Yacht Design, BMW Designworks USA and Bavaria Yachts) is being lauded as one of the most electrifying and far-reaching partnerships in modern yacht production.

The new Cruiser series offers exciting innovations such as the twin rudder system, flush forward decks, deep keel, huge drop down bathing platform and a

modern sail plan. Options include the Selden in-mast roller furling mainsail (an increasingly popular choice), high-tech sails, self-tacking jib, a selection of interior wood colour choices and a host of other dynamic features. Perhaps the biggest surprise on the Cruiser 45 is the choice of interior layouts. There are three or four double cabins and the four cabin layout is a flexible design that can be converted to three cabins if the fourth is no longer required.

‘We’re very excited about this model as it represents a real stride forward in this size range. With the option of three or four double cabins, it suits a variety of market requirements and we’re confident a Farr designed yacht will be pretty quick so it will suit the racer and cruiser sailors very well too.’ Bavaria’s incredible economic use of scale and efficiency of production means that the value is fantastic, putting it well within the range of buyers of the 42’-43’ yachts, who will get real value for their money with a bigger yacht.

3-cabin layout are identical to the 4-cabin version. The owner´s cabin features a large island bed, a spacious wardrobe and enough light through the large flush hatches. The head offers a comfortable ambience with an adequate wash basin next to an integrated laundry bag – a room with more than just the basic functionalities. The standard shower cabin backboard supports the stylish character of the owner´s cabin.

Patrick Shaughnessy President of Farr Yacht Design had this to say about the Cruiser 45.“After the completion of Bavaria’s flagship, the Cruiser 55, we were tasked as a team to produce a boat at the opposite end of the line, resulting in the Cruiser 32. With the two ends of the Cruiser line established, we went about creating a third cornerstone design in the middle of the Cruiser line. The result of that work was the Cruiser

45. We now have a true flagship, an entry level yacht, and an anchor in the middle of the line to clearly show the world the Cruiser line’s complete intent.

The middle of any line represents a unique challenge. It needs to have the grace of a larger yacht, and the accessibility of a smaller yacht. The boat is a platform that needs to be capable of being a charter boat, workhorse and also a stepping stone toward a real luxury owners yacht.

In our other Cruiser line we’ve clearly established a new way to link the exterior living space with the water. The enormous swimming platforms that we’ve created elsewhere in the line obviously needed to be a focal point for this middle of the line boat. However, we still faced a question of whether this boat should be a twin rudder or single rudder boat.

In the end we chose the twin rudder approach. This choice allowed us to create a large central storage area beneath the cockpit and to give this boat the benefit of real maneuverability at high angles of heel. Both of these are features that an experienced owner stepping up through a line of boats will really appreciate in his or her next yacht.

We followed quite a bit of the design logic we’ve already established with our two bookends. We created a hull shape with a long waterline and a great interior volume. We used our deck space wisely so that we could seat our whole crew for dinner on deck just like we could below deck. We created a cockpit space that is closed and secure to protect your family, but can fully open so that you can truly enjoy the views.

We’ve worked hard to produce a boat that can be kind and forgiving to a novice and rewarding in the hands of an experienced sailor. This is a boat with 2 keel draft options at 1.72m and 2.1m, both which produce ballast ratios exceeding 28%. Both keel versions follow our logic, that a true cruising boat should sail at heel angles of less than 20 degrees below 15kts true wind speed, and avoid reefing until over 20 knots TWS. SANCTuARY COVE INTERNATIONAl BOAT SHOW general manager Barry Jenkins said exhibitors reported high quality sales leads and genuine

buyers. Some reported it had been their best year sales wise for several years.

“We have seen some fantastic sales results,” said Mr Jenkins who confirmed that sales were made directly to international buyers as well as Australians.

“The Show has proven to be the place ‘Where the Marine Business Does Business’ and we have had exhibitors already indicating interest in the 2011 Show.

The 22nd annual event attracted 424 exhibitors, the third highest tally in the show’s history. It is the third highest exhibitor tally in the Show’s 22-year history. There was a total of 576 boats and watercraft on display plus engines, electronics, marine products and services.

The Show had three large pavilions plus close to 15,000sqm of hardstand displays through the waterfront Marine Village.

This year, two new components were introduced – a Prestige Brokerage and Charter area on water and in an Australian first, a dedicated Sea Trial area.

“There were 15 vessels in the Prestige Brokerage and Charter display ranging from around 15m to 30m,” said Mr Jenkins. “These impressive vessels make a handsome addition to the Show,” he said.

A huge array of marine products were displayed including wakeboard vessels, trailerable boats, jetskis and kayaks, engines, marine electronics, marine finance, interior design, safety gear and marine business to business services.

“We know international exhibitors or buyers are

coming from united States, New Zealand, China, Taiwan, Korea, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Italy to name a few countries,” said Mr Jenkins.

At least 111 marine products were released on the market at Sanctuary Cove including 23 world releases.

The new brokerage section was also successful with a good sales. The Friday the weather unfortunately did not play ball, but this did not seem to keep the serious buyers away.

The 2010 Show’s major sponsor is Club Marine. Media partners include Channel 7, Radio 4KQ, Trade A Boat, BoatPoint.com.au and Gold 92.5FM. Sponsors include Hawker Pacific, the Queensland Government, Hyatt Regency Sanctuary Cove. 2009 WIll BE REMEMBERED BY MANY FOR ITS economic downturn. This downturn had a negative impact on the suppliers of most luxury items, be it

a boat, motorbike, refurbished kitchen or that overseas holiday, they all struggled. The boating industry in specific went through a very tough year with sales staff numbers being reduced, factory workers retrenched and a number of brands disappearing from the market. The eternal optimists out there always say that you should see the glass as half full and not half empty. Bavaria Yachtbau was one of those who came out of the recession with an unbelievable new product line, increased production capacity and a motivated production and management team.

Bavaria runs one of the largest serial production facilities spanning more than 6 kilometers in Giebelstadt, Germany. When the economy went into decline, Bavaria was one of only a few manufacturers who did not have to retrench any staff. They merely reduced their 24/7 production capacity and focused on setting up a new production line. They then set about developing a range of new powerboats and yachts using the design services of BMW DesignworksUSA, a subsidiary of the BMW Group. The challenge was to establish a partnership, which will not only produce a stunning boat range, but also create something that can be integrated within their serial production processes. The benefit of this is that the consumer ends up with exceptional value for

money with a modern, practical boat, offering more boat for your money.

Early in the year Bavaria first launched the Deep Blue 46. This boat went on to be awarded as Powerboat of the Year in Europe in the under 50 feet category. This award is also known as the ”Oscar” of boating awards. Simultaneously Bavaria also launched their largest sailing yacht ever, the Cruiser 55, followed shortly thereafter by the Cruiser 32. This shows the serious commitment and intent of Bavaria and should give any potential boat owner a lot of confidence in the Bavaria brand.

The challenge was then set to develop a family cruiser offering the same styling as the Deep Blue 46. The new Sport 28 offers the same clear lines and innovative design while still remaining functional. The German builder therefore followed up on the success of the Deep Blue 46 by applying the same design and styling principles to a 28-footer.

The Sport 28 closely resembles the Deep Blue 46 in terms of sportiness and dynamic powerful proportions. This boat offers the features and space normally only found on much larger boats.

The first thing which catches your attention is the higher freeboard. This is normally a challenge on a smaller boat. The higher freeboard offers exceptional interior space and a full, separate aft cabin with a double bed. In the cockpit they have managed to fit a double sunbed. Underneath the sunbed is a large storage area for your “braai” and water toys.

The cockpit offers seating for up to 5 people, while the skippers driving position is well laid out with good visibility all round. The dashboard has a modular angular instrument panel, with an optimized position for a chart plotter between the steering wheel and instrument cluster. The throttles on the starboard side are mounted on a raised section creating a feeling of being in a sports car whereby the seat is normally surrounded by the gear lever and instrument panels.

Although the 28 is a great family cruiser it also offers that sporty touch for when you need it. The international press confirmed that its ‘handling matches its looks’. Behind the skippers seat you will find a wet bar with basin, serving area and an optional cockpit fridge.

The deck and cockpit is surrounded by large square portholes. These new portholes provide a more flush fitting look as apposed to the traditional round raised portholes. There is also a separate aft cabin which is normally only found on a boat over 30 meters. On the port side there is a cupboard, seating area and a night table. You will definitely want to overnight on this boat.

The new lighter wood and light fittings breaks away from the traditional nautical look and would be more apparent in a loft apartment. I believe this contributes greatly to making the boat feel even bigger than what it actually is. There are also 2 portholes at eye level, which really brightens up the cabin.

The 28 is fitted with an elegant toilet and shower compartment. The head has a shower, plenty off storage, with a well-placed corner basin surrounded by a couran top. The toilet porthole has a pull down privacy screen.

The U-shaped seating in the bow converts into a full double bed at night time. The boat can therefore easily accommodate a family of 4 wishing to overnight. Above the forward sleeping area you will find Bavaria’s trade mark enclosed pigeonholes. This creates a lot of space

SCheduLeThe course and dates for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 have been officially announced. This edition of the race will see a new format for the racing programme in the host cities, including the start city of Alicante, Spain and finish city of Galway, Ireland. For the first time, the Volvo Ocean Race will finish with an In-Port race in Galway.

THE ICONIC ISlANDS OF THE AZORES IN THE ATlANTIC, Fernando de Noronha off the Brazilian coast and the Fastnet Rock, the southern most point of Ireland, all

make an appearance on the course.The new racing schedule for the stopovers will

conclude with an action-packed long weekend in the host cities. “We had two aims when changing the stopover programme,” said Knut Frostad, CEO Volvo Ocean Race.

“Firstly we have reduced the time the teams are onshore and the time they have between the In-Port race and the Leg start. Traditionally the teams would change their yachts from an offshore sailing mode to an

inshore racing one and back again for the Leg start. By bringing the two events together we lower the costs to them and their sponsors. In fact, we have also achieved more time for the shore crews to work on the yachts and subsequently the sailors get more time off.

“Secondly we can entertain the local public with the spectacle that is the Volvo Ocean Race on the water, for a long weekend of great racing and thrilling viewing. We hope by providing the local spectators with this on-the-water display, we will increase the public’s awareness and passion for the sport of sailing.”

weekend, where the sheer power of the yachts and the onshore glamour of the race are showcased to the public and race guests. These races do not count to the teams’ overall points.

The second day sees the Volvo Ocean Race teams battle it out in two In-Port races, which count to their overall scores. The short course of the In-Port races and the proximity to the stopover harbours and beaches, will allow the public to watch the exciting racing up close, as the teams push the yachts to the limits trying to gain the important extra points.

The finale to the long weekend is the leg start, where the teams say farewell to the host city and begin the offshore battle to the next destination.

The start and finish ports also have a new look schedule. Alicante will have a week of festivals between the In-Port and Pro-Am race weekend and the start of leg ONE to the popular host city of Cape Town, South Africa.

Galway will be the first finish city in the race’s history to hold an inshore race after the final leg. This will not only give the teams a chance to add valuable points to their overall scores but also allow the enthusiastic Irish fans to enjoy the racing on Galway Bay.

There will be no scoring gates in this edition of the race but the fleet will still pass round some famous islands on their course round the world. leg ONE will see the fleet pass the island of Fernando de Noronha, 200 nautical miles off the Brazilian coast as the first proper rounding mark of the race.

Due to increasing pirate attacks and hijacking off the coast of Somalia, the fleet will sail around an exclusion zone, which will be added to this area nearer race time to help reduce the risk to the yachts.

On leg EIGHT from lisbon, Portugal to lorient, France the fleet heads offshore again for a 1,940 nautical mile leg, rounding the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores before heading back towards the northwest coast of France.

The Fastnet Rock is the last landmark the sailors will sail around before their final sprint up the west coast of Ireland, to the finish in Galway.

Query: “Our family loves boating, but we get bored with buying and eating the same supermarket snacks. Could you please provide us with some fresh ideas using ingredients that we can have on hand?”

Joanne says: These recipes are full flavoured and can either be made ahead of happy hour or put together in

a flash so that you are free to enjoy the sunset. On a yacht, there’s always the conflict between provisioning accurately down to the last gram and being experimental with your menus at your whim. The recipes that follow tend towards the latter, and don’t require tedious measuring of ingredients. Its about personal preference and intuition.

Crostini with Basil pesto mousseDon’t throw your left over French loaves (baguettes) overboard. Instead, slice them thinly, sprinkle generously with extra virgin olive oil and seasoning and your choice of herbs or grated Parmesan and bake on a baking tray in a moderate oven (180·c) until they are beginning to turn golden. Allow to cool and then store in an airtight container until ready to use. They will keep for up to a week.

To make the Basil Pesto Mousse, blitz fresh basil, pine nuts, grated Parmesan and finely chopped garlic in a small mixer. The quantities are not important, but there should be more basil than nuts and cheese. Then slowly add in extra virgin olive oil to create a paste. It should not be too liquid. Soften the mixture further by blending with a goat’s cheese or cream cheese. Then beat some whipping cream and fold this into the pesto, creating a flavourful mousse. Top the Crostini toasts and garnish with a slice of olive.

Asparagus and Bacon wrapped in phyllo pastry with Blue Cheese ButterLightly blanch tender young asparagus spears – boil them briefly in boiling water and then dunk them into ice cold water to arrest the cooking. Wrap each spear in a piece of bacon (or prosciutto).

Mix a small amount of Stilton with softened butter and brush a sheet of phyllo pastry with this. Cut the pastry into strips, wide enough to cover the stems of the asparagus. Roll the wrapped asparagus in the phyllo strips (cigar style), leaving the asparagus tips visible. Brush the outside of the phyllo with plain melted butter and place on a baking tray.

Bake in a hot oven at 200·c for a short while until the pastry is golden. Can be served hot or cold.

Mini Cocktail Pitas are good to have on hand. Freeze them and thaw to use as needed.

To make the Chicken Burgers, blitz free range chicken breasts with finely grated ginger, crushed garlic, finely chopped red chilli, soya sauce and chopped fresh coriander in a mixer. Pulse it until the mixture is well blended and stop as the contents becomes a ball. Then roll the mixture into small balls, about 1.5cm in diameter, and place on a tray. Refrigerate until needed, or

freeze and defrost overnight in the fridge. To cook the Chicken Burgers, heat a small amount

of oil in a non-stick pan and then roll them around in batches until cooked on all sides. Cook over a moderate heat to ensure that they are cooked through before the exterior burns.

Place inside a mini pita and garnish with coriander, if its available fresh. Alternatively serve with roasted peppers.

‘port and Starboard’ roasted pepper and Asparagus omlette WrapsRoasted peppers are easy to prepare and go down a treat. They are versatile for many dishes. Simply quarter the red peppers, remove the white pith and seeds inside, and lay them skin side up on a baking tray. Turn on the grill and grill them until the skin turns black. Remove from oven and invert a roasting dish over the baking tray (this is much more convenient than covering a dish with kitchen wrap). Allow to cool slightly while they steam under the roasting dish, then remove the skins with ease. Slice into strips and use as is, or place in a jar and cover with olive oil and a dash of mixed herbs for future use.

The idea for using a wrap and an omelette together came to me when I had run out of bread. You need a good non-stick pan because you don’t want too much butter around.

First make an omelette using 2 eggs and seasoning, lightly mix these together in a small bowl and then pour onto a lightly buttered non-stick frying pan. Grate a strong flavoured cheese over the thin omelette and allow to cook lightly without folding.

Heat a store bought wrap (tortilla) in the microwave

on high for 10 seconds and then place it in the pan over the omelette when the omelette is lightly cooked through and there is no liquid present. Then carefully invert the tortilla onto a plate, with the omelette side up.

Top with a strip of thin slices of roasted peppers and roll this Swiss Roll style into a ‘sausage’ and then using a sharp knife slice on the diagonal into 6 to 8 pieces. Repeat using a strip of blanched asparagus, thus giving you visible red and green fillings.

L ED STANDS FOR lIGHT EMITTING DIODE, lEDS have been with us for some 40 years. Recent developments over the last 5 years have seen the

efficiency of lEDs improve to the point where they can now be used for more than indicator lights and displays on instruments. LEDs are gradually making in roads into television sets, outdoor displays, automotive lights, commercial, residential and marine lighting.

When replacing incandescent, halogen and florescent lights with lEDs the benefits are that they have the ability to produce an equivalent level of light to these traditional means while using up to 80% less electricity. This means the benefit for boaters is less drain on electrical systems meaning batteries will require less charging by means of engines, solar panels or wind generators whilst the boat is in use.

LED Replacements lamps are now available as replacement for most type of traditional globes.

The question now is how do you take advantage of this technology? Many boat manufacturers are beginning to install some LED lights into new boats, however for the most of us we need to upgrade our existing lights. This can be done via replacing fittings. Replacement units have many benefits of usually being sealed at the factory and have specially designed lenses to disperse the LED light. Unfortunately these units are prohibitively expensive.

There is a cheaper option. More recently LED replacement bulbs have found their way onto the market. These bulbs cost little more than an ordinary bulb and can offer up to 50,000 hours of service life. Fortunately in fair weather it only takes 1 yachty to change a light bulb.

There are replacement LEDs and replacement LEDs. There are a number of characteristics one should check off before purchasing replacement bulbs:• POWER SuPPlY CIRCuIT – LEDs run on very low voltage

and need an advanced power supply to drop the voltage to the correct level and cope with the voltage ranges experience in any marine electrical system. At rest the system will be around 12 – 12.5V whilst charging voltages can reach 14.2V. These advanced power supplies are known as constant current drivers. Some LED replacement bulbs available use only a resistor, which does not adequately control the voltage. The result is replacement bulbs that will only last a number of months at best.

• HEAT DISPERSION – LEDs while producing heat levels that are almost undetectable do need to get rid of heat on the individual LED units. The use of aluminium

circuit boards solves this problem. These are often white in colour. You can spot the cheaper plastic boards as they are normally green.

• POlARITY – LEDs by their nature only allow power to flow in one direction. Good quality units automatically reverse the polarity meaning you don’t need to rewire your fitting to make your new lED bulb work.

• COlOuR TEMPERATuRE – Colour temperature is the colour of light that the LEDs produce. Think of standard florescent lights compared to normal incandescent globes. LEDs are now available in a range of colours. The key is to pick the right colour for the application. Cool whites are great when you need very bright light for example in an engine room whereas warm white will give you a light the same colour as halogen and incandescent bulbs. Many fittings are unfortunately only available in ‘cool white’ which can be annoying in living areas.

• lIGHT OuTPuT – Traditionally we have talked about the wattage of a bulb. In boats we have had 5 to 20 watt halogen and incandescent bulbs and 8 watts + fluorescent. As watts are a unit of energy, that in the case of bulbs represents their consumption, we need to measure light output not watts. Usually light output is measured in lumens. There are various conversion tables around however a general rule of thumb is 10 watts = 100 lumens.Clearly when converting your lights to LED much

consideration needs to be given to your needs and the environment that the bulb operates in. It is best to contact an LED expert and even trial a few globes in your fittings to make sure they work for you.

Aside from the tailor-made sea excursions which Cape Grace continues to offer, guests can now also enjoy a 1 hour Harbour Cruise on board the hotel’s 56ft luxury yacht, Spirit of the Cape. To set the tone for an unforgettable hour, a glass of sparkling wine is offered per guest on arrival. Whilst nibbling bar snacks and taking in the passing scenery, guests can enjoy commentary from the skipper on the history of Cape Town’s colourful harbour.
