mmW Propagation Characteristics

• Rain attenuation

• Atmospheric oxygen (O2) Absorption, i.e., 60GHz

…Short-range radio link

…Smaller interference, compared to microwaves

60GHzmmW band

mmW Radio-Link Characteristics

• Very wide frequency band

…High speed transmission

• Radiated power limitation, i.e. 10mW, for unlicensed use

…Short-range communication

• Usage of directional antennas …Long-distance communication

WPAN Concept

• Short-range radio communications network

( ~10m distance, among several nodes, independent local-area-network )

• Possible wireless network between game-equipment, home appliance, video-signals transmission and PC/peripheral etc

• Short-range/high-speed link … mmW is suitable• Easy to link among nodes … ad hoc link protocol

WPAN Scenarios

Utilization example in a house

• In a house:

- All appliances with Tx & Rx are mutually connectable

- Wirelessly Controllable appliances

• In a meeting room:

- Notebook PC with mmW-Tx & Rx

- Share presenter’s material on their PCs

- Slide data can be transmitted to projector

• Other situations:

- railway station, inside train or bus, store etc. Utilization example in a meeting room

Advantages of mmW system compared to UWB

• Good coexistence between mmW system and 802.11a/b/g & Bluetooth because of large frequency difference

• Good coexistence among mmW systems because of larger path-loss compared to microwave band systems

• Higher speed transmission; i.e., more than 1Gbps• Exploitation of antenna directivity … Longer transmission distance• Simple spectrum mask• Simple modulation/demodulation• Simple signal processing• Poorer frequency stability; i.e., within +/-500ppm
