In the December issue of “The Voice” I was critical of the police service for removing “bobbies” from foot patrol beat officers and replacing them with panda

cars, and I quoted a story where I had been on foot patrol in Ibstock and caught a youth committing criminal damage to a glass display cabinet attached to the Palace cinema.

A similar incident occurred some time later after I was transferred to Coalville and I was on night duty patrolling the town centre. At 1am I was at the junction of Belvoir Road and High Street when I saw three youths approaching the junction from Ashby Road.

The youths had obviously been drinking and I decided to keep an eye on them. I stepped into a shop doorway and watched the youths as they crossed the junction and proceeded along High Street. At that moment, there was a loud noise of breaking glass which had not been caused by the three youths as they were still in my sight.

I started to walk along High Street when there was a second noise of breaking glass and I started to hurry towards the sound. At that moment a youth appeared from Currys doorway (yes, in those days there was a Currys in High Street!) carrying a portable transistor radio. On seeing me, the youth turned and ran towards Hotel Street with me in hot pursuits. I was able to stop and apprehend him at the level crossing and took him back to Currys shop display. The large side window was completely shattered and, in the youth’s attempt to steal the most expensive radio he had caused a great deal of damage to other electrical goods in the window.

The youth was held in custody overnight and brought before the Magistrates later that morning when he as given a custodial sentence. The youth was identified as a petty criminal from Leicester and, had it not been for a policeman being on his beat, he could possibly have got away with his crime. This strengthens my argument that there is no substitute to having policeman on the beat. It gives the general public confidence.

Matt was impressed with Leicester’s pre-season form saying that they looked as though they had clicked as a team and were already playing with confidence. At this point he already felt that they would do well, especially on the back of recording no defeats in their pre-season games.

Previous manager Nigel Pearson had already created a good group of players and the new boss, the experienced Claudio Ranieri wisely kept the vast majority, only adding to the squad with players that he felt would enhance the qualities of the ones already here.

Crucially, he also kept most of the back room staff such as Craig Shakespeare and Steve Walsh. This created a level of stability which was needed after the unexpected departure of Nigel Pearson, who had presided over arguably the most incredible ‘great escape’ in Premier League history when Leicester lost only once (to Champions Chelsea) in their last 9 games and came from 9 points adrift of safety in March to finish a creditable 14th in the final table.

Matt feels that the present team have already matched and surpassed anything that previous Leicester City teams have done and they now know they can match their playing abilities against any team in the Premier League, which in itself is a considerable achievement given the vast resources of the elite super-rich clubs who have dominated proceedings since the inception of the Premier League in 1992.

After what had proved to be a traumatic season at times Matt thinks that if, at the start of this season anyone had offered Leicester a 17th place finish, and thus avoid relegation, most people would have taken it. This is what makes everything they have achieved already way beyond most people’s expectations. Recently, there have been bookmakers making them favourites to win the title, especially after the superb win at Manchester City in February. In addition they are now odds-on for a top 4 finish, which would mean qualification for the Champions League - an incredible feat considering their position this time last year. However, showing a somewhat superstitious side to his nature, Matt said he would prefer not to endorse this just in case it tempts providence!

Pointing at the flip side of all this, Matt says that due to their new found success, there is now a change in the level of expectation about what they can achieve. This in turn creates its own pressures both, for this and for forthcoming seasons too. Fans will be hoping, and maybe even expecting, a level of performance from now on that they undoubtedly not have been expecting before.

It remains to be seen if the performances can be sustained over a long period and a lot will depend on the owners commitment to the clubs successful future. That said, there’s nothing to suggest otherwise and they seem very happy to work with the manager to achieve continued and future success.

Matt feels that Jamie Vardy has been the most exciting player this season, although it’s plainly obvious to everyone watching City this season that there are other very good players in the team, all who have played key roles in helping Leicester achieve its present success. Particularly pleasing is the national recognition now being bestowed upon the silky skills of Riyad Mahrez and the incredible energy levels of N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater in midfield. Throw in the constant supply of dangerous crosses from Mark Albrighton, the shot-stopping of Kasper Schmeichel, the international quality of Christian Fuchs and the rock like centre-back partnership of Robert Huth and captain Wes Morgan and you have the basis of a title chasing team.

In his role as Radio Leicester co-commentator Matt is at all the matches and says it’s great to be there, especially given the supercharged exciting atmosphere in the King Power Stadium created by the excited Foxes faithful, all of which helps the team’s performance a great deal.

Matt’s looking forward with quiet confidence to the rest of this season and says that the coming seasons will be very interesting to see what can be achieved, not just in the Premier League but perhaps (hopefully) on the European scene too!

Bike Safety Event is a big success! Our first cycle hub on 18th February proved a real hit with local cyclists thanks to the combined efforts of Leicestershire Constabulary and Adrian Thomas of Market Cycles (Mobile Cycle Repairs).

PCSO Matt Suffolk registered approx 15 bikes on the UK National Property Register, Immobilise, to ensure that they would be returned to their rightful owners should they be stolen. There was also a selection of “Freebies” ranging from hi-vis backpacks to reflectors and even pens which proved a real hit with the younger cyclists!

A steady queue waited outside Ibstock Business Centre for Adrian’s expertise as he carried out free safety checks on all bicycles brought to the event. He also provided sound advice for maintenance and serving which he can carry out at his stall at Coalville Indoor Market. Adrian is also teaming up with Leicester Constabulary at a further bike safety event on 9th April at Coalville Council Offices.

Due to the success of the cycle hub, we will be holding a further event in the school summer holidays so watch this space!

The Palace Players highly successful trip to Pantoland! Last month, the Ibstock based, community drama group, The Palace Players, took their audiences on a riotous romp through Pantoland to the picturesque village of ‘Little Charming’.

Never before have Sisters been so ugly, Stepmothers more wicked, Princes more charming or Cinders so lovely!

In only their second year, this very successful run of this popular pantomime, written and directed by group member Al Lester, gave The Palace Players a chance to really show what they can do. The group meet every Wednesday night at The Palace Community Centre, High Street, Ibstock. With members of all ages and experience, the group is very friendly and anyone wanting to find out more about any aspect of amateur theatre is most welcome to come along.

The great team of Palace volunteers and non-acting members and friends of the Palace Players helped to organise and staff the event. Many thanks to Dawn and her company, ‘Party Staging’, for providing, and constructing the lovely fairy tale castle, which created a stunning backdrop for the pantomime, and also the beautiful pumpkin coach which took Cinders off to the Royal Ball in style. (www.party-staging.co.uk Tel: 0790 669 5325).

Thank you to everyone who supported the event. We hope to see you all for another great event at Ibstock Palace! The Palace is managed and staffed by volunteers. If you are interested in finding out more about forthcoming events or becoming a member of The Palace volunteer team or joining the Palace Players, please contact Gary on Tel: 01530 262400.

Since our last issue things have really moved on at the Ibstock Central and particularly at Monkey Central!

It is fair to say that the new soft play area has proved to be one of the most popular facilities to hit the village for many years. Parents and children have really appreciated this new venue where mums and dads can enjoy a relaxing coffee or snack whilst the kids let off steam in a safe environment - all at a great price of only £3.00 per child.

A newly appointed cafe will soon be opening to enhance the facilities so please watch this space for further details.

Other great successes have been the Soul Nights and Line Dancing Parties, both of which are held in the newly appointed large concert room. So, if you’re looking for a great time and great music in a friendly atmosphere come along and “strut your stuff”.

For anyone who is looking for a quiet drink with occasional entertainment, then the recently refurbished front room offers the ideal opportunity for a wonderful relaxing evening. Details of the forthcoming entertainment for both rooms can be seen in the “Forthcoming Acts” section.

All rooms are available for hire and make the ideal venue for most kinds of private parties, whether they are for a kiddies birthday party or for a wedding reception. So, if you have an important celebration coming up then simply ask a member of staff for full details.

In a very short period of time Ibstock Central has established itself as an important social and entertainment centre in the village. With Pete Lewis at the helm and with a great team behind him, we can be certain that village life is going to be exciting!

• Brand new state of the art soft play area – sure to delight the kiddies!

When entrepreneur Steven Richardson and fellow businessman Frank Barson purchased Kirkby House in Kirkby Mallory back in 2008 it was basically a domestic home with a small scale bed and breakfast facility, but right from the start they both had a vision of what they wanted to create.

With an uncompromising attitude and attention to detail they embarked on series of up grades and refurbishments (the last of which was completed only twelve months ago) and the end result is a beautiful forty-seater restaurant and nine bedroom guest house offering eight en-suite rooms.

Right from the start the intention was to retain as many of the original features as possible (the building is Georgian and dates back to 1780) and they have retained the working fireplaces and many of the original doors. Even the bar has been created using reclaimed bricks from the refurbishment and the finish is now akin to a high grade Country House hotel with leather upholstered chairs and settees in the bar area which creates a wonderful warm and welcoming atmosphere upon arrival.

When it came to the restaurant, although this was running well, both Steven and Frank knew that in order to achieve it’s full potential they would need a top quality chef who was able to offer a full à la carte menu and they have been very fortunate in retaining the services of Kevin Doughty.

Kevin has an enviable history as a chef who some years ago was actually the youngest sous chef in the Holiday Inn organisation worldwide with over 20 chefs working under him (this was when Holiday Inn had a reputation as a high

class hotel chain throughout the world).

For many years he was head chef at the renowned Gregory’s Restaurant in Allendale Road Leicester at a time when it was voted “Best Restaurant in England Outside Of London”. He was also chef at Chef Patron when it received a Michelin card and Kevin has been featured in “The Good Food Guide”

Kevin has also catered for many celebrities such as Sarah, Duchess of York and Gary Lineker, and has appeared on local radio alongside Englebert Humperdinck and Tony Wadsworth on a programme dedicated to food.

When speaking to Kevin, his passion for food is immediately apparent and everything that he cooks is made with the finest ingredients. The same determination to excel that Frank and Steven brought to the refurbishment of the building is reflected in Kevin’s attitude to the dishes he prepares. Even a simple dish like a prawn cocktail is given Kevin’s signature touch by using fresh crayfish instead of peeled prawns.

Every dish is designed and prepared by Kevin himself, including starters, main courses and desserts, and we understand that his Port and Stilton ice cream has achieved a great following of its own. Sunday lunches are proving to be very popular with satisfied customers returning week after week so it is most advisable to book in advance.

It is quite obvious that with a growing reputation and a team of people such as Frank Steven and Kevin, Kirkby House will not only attract local people but also people from a wide area who are looking for that special dining experience!

Local girl to run in the 2016 London MarathonDespite taking up running less than 12 months ago, local girl Lindsay Tilbury is all set to run in the 2016 London Marathon on the 24th April.Lindsay says that she has always been keen on keeping fit and took up running in order to increase her stamina. “At the start I found running quite difficult but after a week or so I found that I could cover longer and longer distances with ease and then the running bug really bit. I am running for Sense, the charity that raises funds for deafblind children. As a mother of two healthy children, I realise just how lucky I am. If the money I raise can help in any way then it is well worth all the effort”

So far the furthest Lindsay has run is eighteen miles but is certain that the atmosphere and the crowd will carry her over the finish line on the day.

Grandad’s Carers work for a reputable company with 25 years experience of delivering care

The Sence Team support many charities. They hold a business charity quiz night in September each year and in the past have raised monies for St Giles Hospice, The Air Ambulance, and last year chose to support Hinckley-based 12 year old Ryan Swain in his bid to raise money for ‘Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group’ and ‘Clic Sargant’. They raised £3,000 for Ryan in 2015. They have also supported Burton YMCA, the Rainbows charity participating in a fun run held at Conkers (all non-runners!) and in June this year will be mountain climbing in the Lake District, again for Ryan Swain’s charities.

Community values are an important part of the Sence ethos and for the 2015/2016 season they have sponsored the Ibstock Ladies Cricket Team, The Vixens.

With community values in mind, Sence realise that their offices at the Ibstock Business Centre is the heart of the community and are assisting the centre with help for local businesses in the form of the ‘Ibstock Business Network’. A networking group has been set up and the next meeting is Monday 7th March at the ‘Tea Rooms’ at the Business Centre. Meetings will take place each month and with the support of Steve of Latitude Design & Print, and Mandy of the Tea Rooms, they aim to help local businesses understand what you can achieve by networking together and having various topics to help move businesses forward.

The first meeting is complimentary. If anyone would like to register their interest or ask any questions regarding the networking group please contact Sarah at Sence on 01530 267320 or email: [email protected]

What’s your story? What jumps to mind when you hear the term Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS)?

For many people, the answer is ‘not much’. And yet, there are at least 359 VCS groups working in North West Leicestershire providing vital services and enriching the lives of local residents.

Skating and more thanks to the VCS

The VCS is made up of organisations and people working for the benefit of communities rather than for financial gain. These groups take many forms, from churches, mosques and other houses of worship to community groups to businesses that invest their profits into the community.

Whatever their type, VCS groups provide essential services and their impacts are made possible by thousands of local volunteers and staff.

Each of the people involved in the VCS has their own story. For Measham group DE12 SK8’s founder Phil Woodhall, that story is about skateboarding. Phil has been skating for over 40 years, and in 2010 he started to wonder whether his favourite sport might help reduce the anti-social behaviour that was an issue in Measham.

So, he brought together a group of young people and local volunteers around an

ambitious goal: Build a brand new, world class skate park in their village.

After 5 years of hard work by a core of around 10 volunteers and 30 local young people, DE12 SK8 opened their skate park.

“Since the skatepark opened in September 2015 Measham has been put on the map for very positive reasons nationally. A few months after it opened a meeting took place between the parish council, planning department, Police and district council and all agreed that since it opened there have been almost no reported incidents of ASB in the village.”

“It was agreed by all that this has never happened before and is a true testament to the success of the park. To see young and old alongside each other using the park together promotes respect at every level and the young people are now learning from positive examples. This has to be a good thing and I feel very proud to be a part of it.”

Phil’s story is about skating – what’s yours?

Phil is one of thousands of local residents working selflessly to change lives in his community. These inspiring individuals volunteer, run groups providing vital services, coach sports clubs and much more and local charity Voluntary Action LeicesterShire (VAL) wants to hear as many of those individual’s stories as possible.

VAL’s new campaign, My Community My Story, is your opportunity to shine a light on a person or group that you know who’s working to better your community or to tell your own story.

Your stories will draw attention to the fantastic work happening across North West Leicestershire and inspire more people to get involved.

When you share a story, you’ll also enter a draw for a range of prizes.

Sporting just too strong for SaintsA brace in each half by the visitors, goals coming from Jack Wilson 27m, Sean Brian 29m, Sam Wills 49 the scoring completed 79m by substitute Connor Collins.

In blustery conditions which made tight control difficult the match was played in fairly high tempo, the first opportunity fell to the visitors who tested Ben Allsop from distance, then 5 minutes latter at the other end a free kick on the edge of the box was fired into Bromsgrove’s defensive wall by Eddie Wilson.

Dan Wain kept the scores level with a timely clearance with 19 minutes played and was also on hand to tidy up another dangerous attack. The deadlock was broken in rather fortunate way for the “Rouslers” Jack Wilson scoring from 25 yards, his left foot cross into the danger area catching a gust of wind to lift the ball into Allsops top left hand corner for 1 nil to Bromsgrove. It got worse for the hosts just two minutes latter when No 11 Sean Brain received the ball on the edge of the box, with work to do he out run the home defenders to slot his low firm drive into the back of the net to double the advantage.

It was all the visitors action for the next 10 minutes Allsop saving from Walker and Brian shooting wide before Heather had their best chance of the half a Rami Tekle pile driver from outside

the box hitting Chris Jay’s upright, shortly following a cross from Jordan Burrows finding Wilson who was unable to test the keeper, the same fate occurring for Deqwon Ebanks who miss hit a great through ball from Wilson.

HT HSJ 0-2 BS

The game was effectively over just 4 minutes into the second half when a 3 man move left a simple tap in for Sam Wills to extend the Bromsgrove lead to 3 nil.

The hosts did almost reduce the gap but a great effort by Wilson rebounded off the cross bar and at he other end Harry Reece came to Saints rescue making a timely tackle, with the Saints back four keeping the speedy attackers at bay they could do nothing to prevent the forth goal, which was arguably the best of the encounter, a cracking screamer of a drive from 30 yards from Connor Collins on the run which a full stretched Allsop could only get a hand to it but unable to prevent its pathway to the net.

All the endeavor by the Rigby boys towards the whistle couldn’t dent the visitors excellent record, the former Southern League team leaping to top of the league over the Coventry United.
