Last month’s quiz answer... and winner!Quite a few of you were able to correctly identify last month’s local land mark as Shackerstone Station, the headquarters of the railway with museum, Victorian tea room, souvenir shop, loco shed and main rolling stock located here.

This month’s prize has been won by Mick Roberts and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Andy of 5 Star Mobility at their new premises. (See their advert on page 29).

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

NOT only did Andy Kessler from Breedon get rid of his crippling sciatica, he’s now free of IBS, thanks to Herbal Healing in Coalville.

The specialist electrician journeyman was stopped in his tracks when shocking pain in his hip and leg travelled down to his foot.

Andy, 48, said he knew straight away what he must do to be cured of the pain. “I called Doctor Ye, because he cured me a few years ago - and I knew he would do it again.”

Andy admits he had been extremely skeptical about acupuncture. However, having now been cured not once but twice by Doctor Ye, he has total faith in the clinic on Belvoir Road.

He says: “It was a real eye-opener to me. I’m quite a conventional man but this doctor and the knowledge he has is sensational.”

In February, the terrible pain

from his back down his right leg returned. He had been pain-free since his first acupuncture at Herbal Healing which was in October 2016.

He works in London every week on the Crossrail project and his pain was so harsh that he could no longer sit down on the train to work.

He says: “I knew it was time to visit Doctor Ye again and that he was the only man who could cure it.”

Sure enough, after a few sessions of acupuncture, Andy is

now feeling much better and his pain has melted away.

“I look forward to my sessions. The needles don’t hurt at all when they are in place – it makes you feel wonderful and relaxed.”

At the same time he treated Andy’s sciatica, Doctor Ye successfully treated his IBS, using different acupuncture points.

This has further impressed Andy, who now need not worry about the whereabouts of the nearest toilet.

No more griping pain in his gut and no more shooting pain from his back down his leg to his toes. Andy knows he has a lot to be thankful for.

He says: “I advise everyone I see who is suffering any sort of pain to visit this amazing man at the clinic here in Belvoir Road, Coalville.”

Give yourself the best chance of feeling better, by calling the clinic on 01530 810888.

Anderson Racing is a local truck racing team competing in the European Truck Racing Championships all over Europe. The team is based around the driver, Jamie Anderson, a local, Ellistown based, business owner, sponsored by Anderson Commercials Ltd & P T Hire. This year is the first full season for the team, competing in the highly competitive truck series in Europe.

Anderson is gaining experience, but is also showing as a strong contender for the Grammar Cup Championship, where he has already gained a number of podium finishes including a few top spots. He is currently lying third, despite some disappointing results and non-finishes, which the team hope to iron out and continue collecting the points and earning those pole positions.

The remainder of the season takes Anderson Racing to Czech Republic from 31st August until 1st September, Belgium on 14th and 15th September, France (Le Mans) on 29th September and Spain on 5th and 6th October.

The Community Voice Team wish Anderson Racing every success for the rest of the season.

Anderson Racing ahead!

Open Tuesday - Sunday 5.30pm - 10.30pm(Closed Mondays except Bank Holidays).

The first Ibstock Annual Flower and Horticultural Show took place on Tuesday 10th August 1880. People from Ibstock and the surrounding villages were invited to exhibit their hard work by bringing the fruits of their labour to a field near the Church. There were various categories for entrants. Class A, for cottage dwellers and fulltime paid gardeners, Class B, for amateurs with a special section for people of Ibstock only and Class C, for gentlemen and nurserymen.

The Leicester Chronicle newspaper reported the event. In the article various comments were made about the entries such as, ‘‘Rev. J .Bennett’s first prize apricots looked very tempting’’; ‘‘onions and cauliflowers were also meritorious’’ and ‘‘the broad beans attracted a great deal of attention’’. Also, ‘‘Rev. R. Watts’ marrows could not have been surpassed in quality’’. In a separate tent, for show only and not to be judged, was a display from Messrs. B & W.T. Everard of grapes and melons, alongside some wonderful plants.

Following on from this success, the committee decided the 2nd show would be even more spectacular. This time it was held in a field adjoining the Hastings Arms Hotel (now the CO-OP). As well as vegetables, fruit and flowers, there were entries for eggs and honey along with displays of chickens and pigeons. The newspaper reported that ‘‘the poultry tent was well filled and drew a large number of visitors. The fowls were especially good, as also were the pigeons’’. When the crowd had had enough of horticultural matters, they could watch the entertainment provided by acrobats, a ventriloquist, and three Brass Bands.

In 1913, by the time these photographs were taken, the show had moved to Thirlby’s field off Melbourne Road. Various Sports and a Tug-of-War were added to the programme. Local schools were invited to field a team and also to enter the gardening and crafts sections. Although we don’t have sports, entertainment and games you can still show off your gardening expertise, cooking and crafts at this year’s show, on Saturday 17th August, at the Palace, High Street. It is credit to the people of Ibstock that after 139 years we still have a Horticultural Show!

GREEN FINGERS THROUGH THE YEARS

The 24th Ibstock Horticultural and Craft show will take place on Saturday 17th August at The Palace, High Street, Ibstock. Entries are welcome on the day, so it’s not too late to take part in this popular village event!

The schedules are available from The Palace and Ibstock Business Centre on the High Street. There are classes for vegetables and flowers, plus home baking and a photographic class with the theme of ‘British Summertime’. With special classes for children aged 14 and under, no one has to miss out on the fun!

Two new craft classes have been introduced; a knitted toy suitable for a child under 5 years and a handmade garment in any medium.

Entries will be accepted the day from 8.30am until 11.15am. Judging starts at 11.30am. Public viewing will start at 2.30pm onwards. Trophies and prize money awarded at 4.30pm. Entry fee per class is 30p. Please see the schedule for all section rules.

For more information please contact Jacquie Aucott by email: [email protected] or telephone 01530 267385.

GOOD GROWING AND GOOD SHOWING!

Get ready, steady,GROW, BAKE, MAKE and SHOW!At the 24th Ibstock Horticultural and Craft Show

Searching for my ‘Good Samaritan’On Monday 17th June, at approximately 4:45pm, I was unfortunate to have a very bad fall, which left me with a bloody nose and a gash above my left eye.

Fortunately for me, a very kind gentleman saw me fall and very kindly stopped his car, offered me a box of tissues and as Ibstock surgery was just around the corner offered to take me there in his car whilst my partner returned home with our pet dog and then come back to the doctors to collect me.

This very kind man drove me to the doctors and escorted me in. After assuring him that I would be fine from there, I thanked him again and he left. A moment later I left the surgery after being informed by the receptionist that I should go to the walk-in centre in Loughborough.

Luckily for me, my good Samaritan was still in the car park, offering to take me home, when I caught up with my partner. Again, I thanked for all his help and walked home.

I would like to trace this gentleman again to thank him properly, as I was somewhat dazed at the time.

All I know is that he is called Alan, tall, well-spoken and he did, at some point live, on Curzon Street.

I know that isn’t much, but I’m afraid that is all I have and hope that the Community Voice can assist.

Regards, Yvonne

If anyone can help Yvonne to trace her ‘knight in shining armour’ or if Alan himself should happen to read this appeal, please contact us here at The Community Voice on Tel: 01530 267344.

The Lee Academy of Dance and Drama is based in Stoke Golding and has been running for over 20 years. We offer classes in Stage dancing and Ballet for students aged between 2 to 22 years old.

We give our children the opportunity to dance in the West End, Disneyland Paris and onboard MSC cruise ships. In June of this year the Academy raised £1514.42 for Down’s Syndrome Society by putting on their bi-annual charity dance show at the Civic Hall in Bedworth. A worthy charity close to the families of the academy. We had a special set at the start of our finale dedicated to the family of one of our students, who is a keen member of the academy. We currently have places in our First Steps class on a Saturday morning. Ring Donna on 07771 864364 for further information.

RUFFLE COMES HOME!An exciting invitation arrived in Ruffle’s kennel recently from the Great Central Railway in Leicestershire. Together with author and illustrator, Rachel Greaves, Ruffle will be appearing at the GCR’s Family Fun event at Rothley Station on August 24th, 25th and 26th. Visitors to the event can meet Ruffle and enjoy an interactive performance of some of his adventures brought to life with puppets and props including an incredible model train called ‘The Flying Terrier’! The Ruffle stories were inspired by Rachel’s love of Airedales combined with knowledge from her two children who have worked on the GCR. Readers of the books will recognise some of the storylines and illustrations if they have visited the GCR.

Rachel explained just how excited both she and Ruffle are to be visiting the places that inspired the series of adventures. ‘The events in the stories are believable because they have happened or readers can imagine them happening. Keen-eyed readers will spot that the little station where Eric the station master works could well be Rothley. There’s also an illustration of the stone bridge that carries the trains over the Swithland Reservoir. Ruffle and I are really looking forward to sharing his adventures in the place where they were imagined as happening – it’s as if Ruffle was coming home!’

The event will include activities and storytelling at stations along the GCR – fantastic fun whilst encouraging reading!

Since self-publishing the first of her series of Ruffle stories just over 3 years ago, Rachel has sold nearly 9500 books. As an English and Drama teacher it was only natural that Rachel adapted some of the stories into assembly performances using puppets and props to promote reading, writing and a love of imagination. Over 100 primary schools have enjoyed sharing in Ruffle’s adventures so far.

You can continue to follow Ruffle’s adventures in the short stories especially written for The Community Voice Magazine. W W W. G C R A I LWAY. CO. U K

‘KATS COLLECTABLES’ – A REFRESHING CHANGE!

Stitching at Stoneywell“Great Oaks from Little Acorns Grow”A one day needlepoint course with Margaret MurtonWednesday 28th August 2019

Building on her first highly successful courses at Stoneywell, Margaret Murton, whose designs aredistributed in kit form worldwide by Ehrman, will be leading another workshop this year.

Stoneywell, designed by Ernest Gimson in 1898, epitomises the ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement and its adherence to the value ofhand crafting. Its position, nestling into the surrounding ancient forest of Charnwood is fitting for the theme for the day, “Great Oaks fromLittle Acorns Grow”. The values of passing on creative skills and being inspired by nature are adhered to with examples from within the houseitself, including the forerunner of the National Trust’s own iconic oak leaf and acorn design. This workshop is suitable for both beginners andthose who wish to improve their design skills. One simple stitch is all that is needed, however, Margaret will show how to modify the oak leafand acorn image using designs from the Arts and Crafts movement and examples from her own work. The day includes a tour of the cottage, expert tuition, all materials, refreshments and a picnic lunch. There will be time to explore the garden and woodlands.

There are places for 12 people only, the fee being £89. Booking is now open. Places may be booked through Stoneywell by email or bytelephoning 01530 248048. There will be a waiting list in strict order of application. Payment in full is by credit card, a refund of which canonly be made by giving notice one month in advance or if the place can be filled from a waiting list.

My name is Samantha Hancock and I am your Cyber Protect Officer. I want to share with you a few pointers that will help keep you safe online.

First and foremost, whatever devices you use to access the internet and email, always ensure they are running the most up to date software, apps and antivirus. When you get a notification saying there is an update available, please do install it ASAP. If it’s an option, choose auto-update.

Secondly, make sure you have antivirus installed and running. These two steps alone will protect you greatly.

Next up, make sure that you have a backup (copy) of any important files, and of course all those precious digital photographs! You can do this by setting up a cloud account that automatically updates, but personally I also have a separate hard disk/memory stick too. There are many reasons to have backups, devices can break, files

can become corrupted and there is the ever present risk of malware or ransomware.

Another important rule to adhere to is to never click on a link in an email to log in to any sort of account. We need to be alert to phishing emails that are trying to trick us. If ever you have an email about a refund, a purchase or a problem with any sort of account, log in via a browser or an app, never by clicking on a link in an email.

Unfortunately it’s very easy for fraudsters to send emails, text messages and alter Caller ID to make their scams look legitimate. Please never disclose any personal details via email, text or over the phone until you have verified the contact is legitimate. For more information on this I urge you to visit www.takefive-stopfraud.org.uk

If you ever receive a call claiming to be from the bank or Police about suspicious activity on your account requiring you to withdraw money, or transfer funds to a “Safe

Account”, this WILL be a fraudster. Banks nor Police will EVER ask you to do this, HANG UP!

I’d also like to encourage you to sign up to Leicestershire Police’s Community Message System, Neighbourhood Link. It allows local teams to be able to send messages about what is happening locally, and you will also receive messages from Action Fraud about cyber, fraud and scams. I also send out advice and information in relation to Cybercrime to keep you informed. Sign up for free at www.neighbourhoodlink.co.uk

Finally, if you belong to groups who would be interested in our FREE Cyber Awareness, Fraud and Scams sessions, please do contact us! My email address is [email protected]

To learn more, why not follow our accounts on Twitter and Facebook @LeicsCyberAware

Did you know that there is now more reported crime online, than in the real world?Would you be surprised to learn that Leicestershire Police have a dedicated Cybercrime Unit? And a dedicated Cyber Protect Officer, whose role it is to raise awareness of Cybercrime, fraud and scams?

For the members of Ibstock Central Townswomen’s Guild summer arrived with a month of memorable activities. June 6th was the ‘Annual Guest Evening’. 50 members and invited guests enjoyed a veritable music bonanza with Ibstock Community Choir, lead by Musical Director, Marion Simpson.

The choir performed a wide programme of songs including a selection from the musical ‘Oliver!’. During the evening a cheque for £350.00 was presented to Dr. Ben Coyle of EMIC (East Midlands Immediate Care). Dr Ben explained his role as a volunteer driver responding to serious health incidents.

Measham Townswomen’s Guild held a open evening on June 10th to which Ibstock’s guild were invited. Jo Goldby gave a fascinating talk about holidays over the past 100 years.

As the national Townswomen’s Guild movement is celebrating it’s 90th year Judy, Julia, Wendy, Janet and Sylvia joined 3000 TG members at Cheltenham racecourse for the national Annual General Meeting. Most of those attending dressed in 1920’s style outfits. Royal Patron HRH Princess Anne

was in attendance. Keynote guest was motivational speaker Victoria Milligan.

A strawberry tea on June 26th raised £395.00 for the guilds 2019/20 charity, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance.

The July meeting welcomed Paul Tabener, who gave an interesting and surprising insight into the world of forensic science.

Hypnobirthing has had a lot of press recently thanks to the Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle usingHypnobirthing techniques to give birth to her first child Prince Archie. So what is Hypnobirthing? Is it a newconcept? And what techniques are used?

Having a baby is one of life’s most amazing gifts and being able to create, nurture and birth new life is nothing short of a miracle. Yet, when manywomen think of the concept of giving birth this often fills them with fear and panic. The media could be blamed for this preconception as well asothers who share their horrific stories of labour and how painful the experience was. Does labour really have to be this way? Or is there an alternative?

What is Hypnobirthing? • Hypnobirthing is a complete birth education programme that teaches simple but specific self hypnosis, relaxation andbreathing techniques for a better birth. With Hypnobirthing, mothers discover that severe pain does not have to be an accompaniment of labour. They are also taught how to release the fears and anxieties they may currently have about giving birth, and how to overcome previous traumaticbirths. Hypnobirthing allows mothers to discover and experience the joy and magic of birth – rather than the horrific ordeal everyone else seemshell-bent on telling them about! Most importantly, mothers learn how to put themselves back in control of their birth – rather than blindly turningtheir birthing experience over to their doctor or midwife. They will be totally relaxed yet always be aware of what is happening around them. Inshort, Hypnobirthing allows mothers to experience birth in an atmosphere of calm relaxation, free of the fear and tension that prevents the birthingmuscles of their body from functioning as Nature intended them to.

A new concept? • Hypnobirthing originatedfrom the work of Dr Grantley Dick-Reid. In hisbook Childbirth Without Fear, published in1933, he suggests that when we are afraid, ourbody diverts blood and oxygen to essentialdefence organs. Dr Dick-Reid hypothesisedthat when a woman is scared during childbirth, blood and oxygen are diverted away from theuterus and therefore it cannot perform itsfunctions efficiently, without pain. When awoman remains calm and relaxed, the uterinemuscles are not starved of vital blood andoxygen, and are free to work comfortably, likeany other muscle in our body. Marie Monganwas a follower of Dick-Reid and used his ideasin the birth of her own children and in turnstarted the Hypnobirthing programme inAmerica in 1989.

Hypnobirthing techniques • The techniquesa mother may be taught during the process ofHypnobirthing are:1. Positive affirmations2. Suggestions 3. Visualisation techniques 4. Relaxation techniques including light

touch massage and anchors 5. Breathing techniques6. Self – hypnosis 7. Ultra – deepening techniques

FRIDAY 27 SEPTEMBER

andFRIDAY 29 NOVEMBER

Continuing our series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’...

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on the inside back cover. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Eric’s eldest two grandchildren, Alice and Jack, were staying for a few days with their Grandad. The weather had been warm and dry so they had asked Eric if they could camp out in the garden overnight. To their delight, Eric had agreed and had found out a large two-man tent which now stood proudly in the garden. The children had collected together sleeping bags, Torches, books and of course snacks and were busy arranging everything in the tent ready for the night adventure! Of course, if there was any hint of food, Ruffle was sure to be near at hand!

‘Ruffle! Get your paws off the sleeping bag – I can’t move it up because you’re standing on it!’

‘No Ruffle! Get your nose out of the bag of snacks! We’re saving them until our midnight feast!’

Ruffle was as excited as the children as they all squeezed into the tent. But it soon became very warm in the tent so they were forced out to the shade of the tree in the garden. They spent a lazy afternoon reading and talking, occasionally Interrupted by the sound of Ruffle snoring as he lay beside them.

‘Um,’ thought Jack out loud. ‘I’m not sure there’s enough room in the tent for Ruffle as well tonight – especially if he’s Going to snore like that all night!’

‘Perhaps he can stay indoors with Grandad instead?’ suggested Alice, rubbing her toe gently against Ruffle’s beard. Ruffle twitched and turned over, his snoring stopping for a short while before beginning again.

Darkness finally arrived. Eric held tightly to Ruffle’s collar as Alice and Jack made their way to the tent, their torches picking out the way.

‘Goodnight !’ called Eric with a laugh. ‘Don’t take any notice of the garden beasts!’

‘What did Grandad mean?’ asked Jack as they settled into the tent. ‘What garden beasts?’

‘Oh he was just joking!’ replied Alice, not very convincingly. They crawled into their sleeping bags then opened the bag of snacks. However, they hadn’t sat for long when they Heard a strange snuffling, grunting sound.

‘What was that?’ cried Jack, his eyes wide open in the torch light.

A scraping sound began outside the tent on the side next to Alice. Jack gave a shout and leapt up, his torch falling onto his sleeping bag. He dashed out of the tent, closely followed by Alice who decided she didn’t want to stay In the tent on her own! They raced along the garden path

towards the welcoming light of the kitchen and burst through the back door calling for Eric.

Ruffle had heard the shouting and had gone to the back door wondering what was wrong. In their haste, the children rushed past Ruffle, leaving the back door open. Ruffle, remembering the tasty snacks, decided he would take the opportunity to see if there was anything left. As he trotted down the garden path to the tent he caught the familiar scent of the hedgehogs that usually appeared in the garden after Dark. When he came to the tent, Ruffle pushed his way carefully through the opening and sat down on the sleeping bag next to the open bag of snacks.

Meanwhile Eric had followed the children to the back door to assure them that there were No ‘garden beasts’ that would hurt them. Alice and Jack suddenly stopped as they looked over to where the tent was. There, bathed in the light of Jack’s torch inside the tent was the shadow of a two-horned creature with a wide open mouth!

Alice squealed with fear. Jack held Eric’s hand tightly – even Eric was stunned. At least until the shadow stood up and shook itself, forming into a body with four legs, a head and a long beard!

‘Ruffle!’ They all shouted Ruffle’s name, partly out of relief!

A large hairy black and tan head appeared from the tent, followed by the rest of Ruffle’s body. He walked slowly along the garden path and past the little group into the kitchen. Ruffle didn’t look at any of them – but licked his lips as he passed. And was that the smallest Movement of his tail…?

DOUBLE CELEBRATION AT THE CENTURY THEATREOn Friday 6th September, the film show at Coalville’s Century Theatre will be a rather special, double Anniversary Night as it will mark 15 years presenting Century Cinema for Keith Pare and 10 years since Hermitage FM Community Radio was first set up.

The feature film on the night will be Red Joan (12A) starring Judi Dench as Joan Stanley, who was exposed as “the KGB’s longest serving British spy”. The screenplay is inspired by the real life story of Melita Norwood, who was finally arrested in 1999 at the age of 87 years! There will also be a 15 minutes supporting film specially produced by Chris North to celebrate Hermitage FM’s 10 years of broadcasting in Coalville.

For this special occasion, doors will open a little earlier at 6.30pm as filmgoers will be offered celebratory drink and cake on arrival. There will also be a Grand Raffle to mark the event.

The film programme will commence at usual time of 7.30pm, admission £3.50 pay on the door.

Christmas Carnival UpdatePlans are afoot and planning well underway for this year’s Christmas Carnival. We have lots of great ideas to make Carnival Week extra special, but need the people of Ibstock to get involved to make it as much fun as we possibly can.

Carnival week will begin on 1st December with the Christmas lights switch-on, and culminate on 7th with a parade and community celebrations.

Throughout the week, there will be the opportunity for all village groups, clubs, societies, schools, churches and businesses to add their own events. Maybe you are a choir that would like to sing during Carnival Week, or are a restaurant that would like to cook street food for the crowds on parade day. Perhaps you are a school that would like to run a Christmas Fayre, or a Church that would like to put on a Nativity. And of course, we would love your group to join the parade too.

Whatever it is that you do, this is your opportunity to do your Christmas version of it, and add it to the other events going on, to make a truly spectacular Carnival Week.

The next Christmas Carnival meeting will be at the Palace, 6th September at 7pm. Everyone is invited to come along, find out what is happening, and work out how their group/club/business/organization can get involved.

If you would like to find out more before then, contact us via the Ibstock Christmas Carnival Facebook Page, or email xxxxxxxxx
