What are the different types of Diabetes?

• Type 1 Diabetes

• Type 2 Diabetes

• Diabetes is a condition where people have too much sugar in their blood.

• Sugar is your body’s main source of energy.

• Sugar comes from the foods we eat.

• Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to use sugar for energy.

What is Diabetes?

When do we need energy?

• We need energy to carry out everything we do.

• Thinking • Playing sport• Sleeping• Keeping warm• Walking to school• Playing with friends• Getting ready for bed

Why do people develop Type 1 Diabetes?

• The body attacks the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas.

• The body stops producing insulin.

• As there is no insulin the sugar levels in the body rise.

Treatment For Type 1 Diabetes

• Insulin Injections

• Healthy Diet

• Exercise

How do you know if someone has Type 1 Diabetes?

• Feeling thirsty all the time.

• Going for a wee frequently.

• Losing lots of weight.• Tired.• Feeling unwell.

Who is affected by Type 1 Diabetes?

• Children and people under the age of 40

• Friends • Aunts & Uncles• Cousins• Brothers and sisters• Mum• Dad

What causes Type 2 Diabetes?

• Type 2 diabetes is much more common than Type 1 Diabetes.

• The body still produces some insulin but it can no longer use it correctly.

• As the insulin is not used correctly, the sugar levels in the body to rise.

Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

• Controlled carbohydrate diet and exercise• Tablets and / or insulin injections

How do you know if someone has Type 2 Diabetes?

•Some people have no symptoms.

•Feeling thirsty all the time.

•Going for a wee frequently.

•Tired.

•Feeling unwell.

Who Is affected by Type 2 Diabetes?

• Older people [over 40 years old]

• Being over weight or obese

• Rare in children and young people.

What happens if people with both Types of Diabetes do not have enough

sugar in their body?• Tired and sleepy• Bad tempered or

even aggressive• Unable to concentrate• Confused • Shaky• Hungry • Pale• Sweaty

This is called hypoglycaemia or

‘a hypo’

When could a hypo happen?

• Too much exercise without eating enough sugary food.

• Just before a meal.• Excitement and

stress.• Cold or hot weather.

What do people need when they are hypo?

• They need sugar in their body quickly.

• Sugar is in many of the foods we eat.

• Sugary drinks• Sweets• Biscuits• Cereal bars

More about children with Type 1 Diabetes

• Children with Type1 diabetes can live an active and healthy life.

• You can not tell by looking at someone that they have diabetes.

• It is important that you know about diabetes so that you can understand, support and think positively about the condition.
