Mexican Territory• Texas joins the Union

• Texas voted to separate from Mexico in 1836

• They asked the US to join the US for protection

• The US was divided over the issue• The South wanted to annex (add) Texas because

it meant another slave state• The North did not want a shift in the balance of

free and slave states• Both sides feared annexation would lead to war

with Mexico• Mexican leader Santa Anna warned that

annexation would lead to war• In 1845 Congress approved annexation

War With Mexico• Boundaries were 1 issue of the war

– Mexico claimed the Nueces River– US claimed the Rio Grande River

• President Polk wanted more land than just Texas – New Mexico and California too

• The war lasted 15 months and little blood was shed

• It ended with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago

• Florida– Spain was having controlling Indians– Adams-Onis Treaty: Spain gave up

Florida and its claim on the Pacific Northwest.
