The Sea Venture

The English first influence was seen as an accident, because they were on their way to Virginia and got shipwrecked off the reef of Fort St. Catherine, St. Georges

Sir George Somers

They came on the Sea Venture on July 28, 1609.Sir George Somers was the Admiral on the ship, and today in honour of him there is a statue/ monument erected in St. George’s. The second day of Cup match is also in his honour

In an effort to continue their journey to Virginia they built two vessels. They are the Patience and the Deliverance.Have you seen these names anywhere in Bermuda?

Can you imagine ?Three years later the British returned to Bermuda to settle and Colonize. They came on the Plough in 1612 with fifty settlers.On their return they found three previous settlers, Edward Walters, Edward Chard, and Christopher Carter.

The settlers were governed by Sir Richard Moore, Bermuda’s first governor.Captain Daniel Tucker was appointed the second governor in 1615 after the departure of Sir Richard Moore.One important task Captain Daniel Tucker performed was to divide the island into eight tribes.

Hamilton, Bermuda

A very significant change in Bermuda’s History occurred in 1815 when Hamilton became the capital of Bermuda.
