Percent of a number
To find a percent of a number:
1. Convert percent to a fraction
2. Multiply fraction times the number
Can you think of another form of 40% we could use to multiply by??
Example: Find 40% of 85
• 40 % = 40/100
• 40/100 x 85
• 40% of 85 = 34
Finding a percent
To find out the percent of one # to another #:
1. Divide the part by the total
2. Times the decimal by 100
What percent of $600 is $450?
• Consider $600 to be the total and $450 to be part of the total.
• 450 = 0.75 600• 0.75 x 100 = 75%
Practical applications• Calculate percent on a test–# correct divided by total # of questions
• Calculate a sales price– Percent as a decimal times original price
• Calculate body fat percentage– Pounds of fat divided by total body
weight
