1. Geophysics

2. Mapping


Job Title Intern

Business Unit Mapping Competency

Nature of vacancy Fixed two-year contract

Purpose of Position The job involves geo-scientific investigations in a wide variety of fields:

carry mapping, innovative geological research and develop business

Participate in local and international geological projects. This includes

logistical planning, field mapping and sampling with the principal aims of

producing natural resource projects (minerals, energy, and

hydrogeology).


Qualifications BSc Hons (Geology), Valid driver’s license (advantage)

Generic Key Activities Conducts investigations or research that may involve mapping,

gathering of data, compilation of maps and reports, laboratory

analysis work in the Eastern Cape or KwaZulu-Natal or Limpopo

3. Engineering Geology

Purpose of Position To undertake engineering geological investigations in the field of infrastructure development. To participate in research specifically in the application of engineering geological techniques in such infrastructure projects and development on land underlain by dolomite

Generic Key Activities Conduct site specific engineering geological investigations.

Perform data searches for queries received from outside or internal clients.

4.2 Laboratory Services (Environmental) 2

Job Title Environmental Intern

Purpose of Position To gain experience in Environmental Management


Qualifications BSc Hons Geochemistry

Experience None

Generic Key Activities Oversee the Technical Officers’ operational throughput.

Improve analysis turnaround times (on Majors and Trace Elements

analysis)

Ensure that all analysis targets are reached (on Majors and Trace

Elements analysis).

Reduce instrument and equipment downtime in the XRF section.

Follow laboratory standard operating procedures and work

instructions.

Produce accurate and validated analysis data.

Document all corrective and preventative measures to all audit

observations and findings.

Initiate, execute, maintain and monitor quality control on all

procedures employed in the XRF Section.

Initiate, monitor and report method validation on laboratory test

methods and align them to international best practices.

Investigate, document and close all non-conformances that are

raised in the XRF section.

Report the status of the XRF Section quality control management to

the Section Head on a monthly and quarterly basis.

Maintain participation in proficiency testing programmes for the

section’s test methods

Report the proficiency testing outcome to the Section Head and

Generic Key Activities Conduct petrophysical studies, including density, sonic wave,

resistivity, induced polarization, dielectric, rock magnetic and

palaeomagnetic studies in a laboratory environment

Updating and expansion of petrophysical database

Conduct fieldwork to collect samples

8. National Core Library

Job Title Intern


Business Unit National Core Library (Donkerhoek)



Nature of vacancy Internship

Purpose of Position Assisting the National Core Repository functions in respect to

collating and developing a foundational database of logs that will

be available for Internal and External Stakeholders


Qualifications Minimum Diploma in geology, BSc in geology would be advantageous.

Experience None

Generic Key Activities To assist in collating information on the shelves, combining it with information that is in the database. Day to day collection of borehole information in as far as depths, number of trays, borehole ID addresses. The cores have not all been included in the database in their correct addresses; this opportunity will allow for reconnaissance of the database and shelve information. Photography of the cores that is shelved will help build a virtual logging database that can be accessed via the internet. A week report of the shelving observed and corrected will be corroborated with the corelib database.

Repacking, followed by logging of the cores transferred into new tray sizes. Labelling of the trays with the correct Borehole ID, tray numbers as well as consistency with the meters tracking.

Learn the Geochemistry sample gridding method and collate work on the ground, liaising on the progress of map shelving. To assist in reporting the requirements of the Geochemistry team

Sampling techniques are adhered to and compliance in returning cores in their correct depths.

All reports for the above mentioned will be combined and allow us to track activities at Donkerhoek, and revisit areas of improvement where necessary.
