    The

    alarm

    goes

    off

    and

    we

    begrudgingly

    drag

    ourselves

    out

    of

    bed

    tostartourdailygrind.

    Weprepareourselves foranotherdayor work (work: you know that stuffyou

    havetodosoyoucandothestuffyoureallywanttodo).Downgoesthebreakfast,onslipsthemonkeysuit,andoutthedoorwego.Bythetimewehittheroadweare

    fullycommittedtoolatetoturnbacknow

    Atworkwebusyourselvesinthevariousfunctionsandtasks,butourthoughtsoften

    driftovertowhatwearegoingtodo inourfreetime:afterwork,onweekendsor

    even, ifwere lucky aholiday. Ifwecanjustgetthroughthisday,thismonth,this

    year maybe then, thenwe can finally relax/ feel satisfied/ enjoy ourselves/be

    happy.

    Sound familiar? The fact is that manyofus spendover 70% of our waking hours

    eithergetting

    ready

    for,

    going

    to,

    or

    getting

    on

    with,

    work

    it

    occupies

    awhole

    bunchofourtimeANDourpsychicenergy.Workiswhatwedomorethananything

    elseandsoitsnotsurprisingthatwederivesomuchofourworthfromit.

    Itgoestofigurethenthat,ifweareunhappyatwork,weareoftenalsounhappyin

    other areas of our lives; as an unsatisfying work life tends to spill over and spoil

    everything else. But conversely if we could find more satisfaction in our work

    shoulditnotmaketherestofourlivemoreenjoyable?

    Ifwecouldjustlearntoputalittlemagicintoourseeminglymundanejobs;toturn

    the ordinary into something extraordinary, our work and personal lives could

    transform.

    OptimalExperienceIt

    has

    been

    said

    that

    asuccessful

    life

    can

    be

    defined

    as

    one

    with

    the

    most

    amount

    of

    highqualityexperiences,or inotherwords,themorequalityof lifeweexperience

    thehappierwetendtobe.Thisarea iswellknowntoscience; infact itevenhasa

    label,itscalledoptimalexperience.

    TheworldauthorityonthistopicisDrMihalyCsikszentmihalyi.Inhisbook,FLOW,Dr

    Csikszentmihalyi describes a method for measuring the amount of optimal

    experiences that people experience, and he named it the Experience SamplingMethod(orESM).

    Thestudyinvolvedonehundredpeoplefromdiversebackgroundsandranoverthe

    course of a working week. Each participant was issued with a pager which was

    activatedatrandomintervalsthroughouttheday.Eachtimethepagerwentoff,the

    respondentswere required to fillouta reportonwhat theyweredoing rightthen

    andhowtheyarefeelingwheneverthepagersignaled.Attheendoftheweekeach

    respondentprovided

    what

    amounted

    to

    arunning

    record,

    or

    script,

    of

    their

    life.

    When all the data was collated and analyzed, the ESM revealed some rather

    intriguing but contradictory information. The data suggested that most people

    reportedtheirhighestamountofpositive(oroptimal)experiencesonthejob(54%)

    rather thenwhenat leisure (18%).Yet,when interviewed,mostsubjectsstatedthattheywouldliketoworklessandspentmoretimeatleisure.

    Thisseemsto indicatethatthere isapervadingattitude inthewestern/developed

    worldthatregardsworkasundesirableandleisureasdesirableevenwhenthe

    evidencesuggeststhatitisactuallyatworkthatwefeelmoreconnectedandalive.

    thefactthatgenerallytherearecleargoals/objectivesandmoreinherentstructure

    intheactivitythaninleisuretime.Furthermore,worktendstobeactiveandleisure

    tendstobepassive; itshardtohaveanoptimalexperiencewhenyoureslouching

    onacouchwatchingthebox!

    Yousee,wehumansthriveonapplyingourenergiestowardsworthwhileends;we

    getalotofsatisfactionoutofthecreativeprocess.VanGoughoncesaidIdreammy

    painting then Ipaintmydream,hereferred to the fact thatwecreateeverything

    twice,onceinourmindsandthenagainintherealworld.

    Whileyoumaybenotbeanartist, there is littledoubt thatyoucreatesomething

    everyday when at work. Whether you are proud of what you create or not will

    depend on the level of effort, focus and skill employed into the task or activity.

    Whetheryouwereconnectedtotheoutcomeandtotallypresentwhileundertaking

    it.

    Theactofworkitselfcanbeseenasapathwaytoaccessmorejoyandhappinessin

    our lives, by investing our focus and energy into what we are doing, by being

    connected to it, we are able to feel the power (and satisfaction) of our creative

    endeavour.Ratherthantireusitactuallyenergisesus!

    work

    itself

    that

    we

    can

    find

    the

    key

    to

    unlockourtalents, improveourhappinessandchangeout livesforthebetter. It is

    Perhapswedontknowthatitispossibletogofurtherortobecomebetteratwhat

    wedoandwearesimply ignorantof thepossibilities.Alternatively, itmaybethat

    peerpressuredictatesthatwedonotriseabovethepack inorderthatwearenot

    ostracized from the group (e.g. tall poppy syndrome). Or maybe we just dont

    have

    it

    in

    us

    to

    be

    truly

    great

    at

    what

    we

    do

    for

    aliving

    and

    we

    allow

    ourfearoffailuretoholdusback.

    GoingwiththeFlowThe

    term

    flow

    was

    coined

    by

    Dr

    Csikszentmihalyi

    to

    describe

    this

    state

    of

    total

    engagement with the task at hand. Through his research he noted that many

    subjectsusedtheexpressionoffloatingwhencompletelyengagedinatask,which

    wasthenshortenedtoflow.

    IhaveadifferentnameforthisexperienceIcallitFLAIR.Iusedtobeaprofessional

    flairbartender(youknowlikeTomCruiseinthemovieCocktail).Iusedtotravelthe

    worldcompeting,performingandteachingothershowtomakedrinkswithflair.

    Flairbartendinggotitsnamefromthewaythatdrinksarepreparedwithmaximum

    expertise&style(ifyouregoodthatis!).Butitsonlypossibletodothiswellonceall

    thebasicshadbeenmastered i.e.knowingtheproducts,drinks,correcttechniques

    etc.Oncethesearemastered,thenextstepsaretoenjoyperfectingtheprocess!

    The first step to improvingyourproductivity inyourworkplace is to focuson theoutcome.BythisImeantoidentifyandthenfixyoursightsontheendresultofyour

    endeavorsi.e.thejobthatsneedstobedone.

    While thissoundseasy, itsactuallyabitmorechallenging thatonemay think.An

    example frommy former industry is thatof thehumblebartender.Manynew (as

    well as experienced) bartenders see themselves as drink makers and focus their

    attentiononsimplygettingthedrinksout.But,whilepreparingdrinksisimportant

    itisnotactuallythejobtobedone.Themainoutcomeofabartendersroleistoput

    requiredresult.Youhavetostepoutsometimesandseetheforestfromthetrees.

    westillknowwhatthedestinationisandsowecansoongetbackontrack.

    growsordecays, itneverjust stopsand takes timeoutbeing static.You see, the

    same way that it is impossible for a tree to stop growing without dying, its

    Mostactiveendeavourshaverules,whetheritbeworkingonabuildingsite,playing

    a game of football, or making a cup of tea there are guidelines that must be

    adheredtoiftheoutcomeistobereachedsuccessfully.Imaginebeingaprofessional

    basketballerandhavingtojoinagameof footballnotknowingtheruleshowdo

    youthinkyouwouldgo?Nomatterhowgreatyouwereatbasketball,thelikelihood

    While it would be hard to compare serving up a mean cocktail to the feats

    accomplishedby

    giants,

    the

    process

    is

    the

    same.

    Learning

    the

    rules

    of

    the

    game is about being brilliant at the basics, about having the entire base skills &

    knowledge required committed to memory so that they can be called on almost

    automatically.

    Thedangerhere isnot toassume thatyoualreadyknow the rulesand tobecome

    complacent.Toooften Iseepeopleswitchthemselvesoffto learningbecausethey

    believe that theyknow itall (orat leastenough)already.Theydonotwant to try

    muchharderbecausetheyarecomfortabledoingwhattheyknowevenifthereare

    betterwaysavailable.

    often thinking about one thingwhen we are doing another. How often have you

    butbeingpreoccupiedwithworkissues?Howdoesthisaffectyourproductivityand/

    orenjoymentofthemoment?Quitesubstantially,Iwouldsay.

    Think about your favorite sports star; when they take the field and commence

    playing, what do you think is going through their head? Are they worried about

    whatsgoingtohappenafterthegame,doyouthinktheymightbedwellingonwhat

    happenedlastweek?Thechancesare,iftheyaretrulyasuperiorplayer,thatthey

    willbecompletelyfocusedonwhatisgoingonateverymomentofthegamethey

    areparticipatingfullyandapplyingthemselvestotheirutmost.

    Peoplewhostrugglewithbeingtotallyinvolvedinthemomenttendtoalsostruggle

    withtheirpersonaltimemanagement,astheyalwaysfeelasthoughtheyshouldbe

    doingsomethingotherthanwhattheyaredoingatthepresentmoment.Salesguru

    BlairSingerhasagreatperspectiveinthis,sayingthat(andIamparaphrasinghere)

    thereisnosuchthingastimemanagementallonecandoitbetotallypresentand

    involvedinwhatoneisdoingatthetimeandnothaveyourmindelsewhere

    and we are holding into, or projected into the future, as we worry about some

    disengage

    with

    overriding

    thoughts

    and

    to

    connect

    fully

    with

    the

    task

    athand is the key tobothproducing themostquality from youendeavoursAND

    gettingthemostsatisfactionoutof themoment.Buthowdoesonedothis?Well,

    thefirststepistogetoutofyourownway.

    BygettingoutofyourownwayImeannotholdingyourselfbackfromfullyapplying

    yourselfandyourtalentswhenyouhavetheopportunitytodoso.Now,youmaybe

    thinkingthatyoualwaysdothis,thatyoualwaysputyourbestfootforwardwhen

    atworkoratplay.Buttheunfortunatefactisthatwealltendtoalludeourselvesin

    thiswayinsteadwetendtodowhatoutwardlylookslikeourbesteffort,andhold

    abitbacktoensurewefeelsafe,notexposed.

    Yousee,weallhavetoovercomefears inordertogrowourselves,and ifwedont

    weendupleadingaconstrictedlife.Didyouknowthat,ifyouplacedaglassjarover

    ababypumpkinthatitwillgrowtofillthejaroutandnofurtherwhileitsbrethren

    willgrow to full size,healthy specimens. In the sameway,our fearsholdusback

    frombecomingwhowewant tobecome,we limitourselves towhatwe thinkwe

    deserveratherthanwhatisactuallypossible.

    Thekey tobreaking through thejar,orself limitingbeliefs, lies in feeling thefearand doing it anyway. Even the most courageous of people comes up againstparalyzing

    fears

    of

    failure

    and

    rejection,

    the

    difference

    is

    that

    they

    having

    enough

    faith inthemselves tostep forwardconfidently,accepting theworstconsequences

    butexpectingthebest.

    Applyingyourselfcompletelymeansgettingoutontothefieldandplayingthegamewithallyourheart.This iswhereallthevaluable lessonsare learned,this iswhere

    donthavetostandoutfromthecrowd,youwonthavetoruntheriskofrejection

    also means that you deny yourself the right to fully express your talents and

    potential, to increase theefficiencyofyour learningand thereforequalityofyour

    life.

    Theprocessofcontinuousimprovementisnothingnew;infactwevebeendoingit

    formillennia.TheTheoryofEvolution,putforwardbyCharlesDarwin,wasbasedon

    thisvery

    principle

    i.e.

    that

    all

    living

    species

    are

    aconstant

    state

    of

    development

    towardstheendthatwillyieldtheirhighestchancesofsurvival.Wehavebeentold

    of birds developing long beaks to reach inside tree branches for insects and of

    themselvesagainstpredatorsorforhuntingpurposes.

    protect

    us

    It follows then that we have the process of improvement as part of our genetic

    makeup i.e.to livewehaveto improve. Ifwearenot lookingforwaysto improvethings,wequicklyloseourzestforlife;webecomeresignedtothisbeingourlot.Webecomebored,depressed, lost,disconnected;we startbeing criticalof thosewho

    areseekingconstantimprovement.Ratherthanbuildourselvesup,westartfocusing

    onbringingothersbackdowntoearthsowedontfeelsobadaboutourselves.

    Manyhavesubscribedtothe EducationVaccinationapproach,whereonceyouve

    hadyoureducationaljabs (eitherat schoolorafterUniversity);youdontneed to

    worryabouthittingthebooksorimproveyouknowledgebaseeveragain.Iamsure

    that therearemanyprofessional thatwould take issuewith this (doctors, lawyers

    and IT personnel spring to mind) for, unless they keep up to date with the new

    information entering their industries, they fall behind and cannot perform their

    respectivejobseffectively.

    Sohowdoweengageourselvesbackintothisprocessofimprovement?Howdowe

    reconnectwith

    that

    creative

    energy

    that

    helps

    us

    to

    feel

    truly

    alive

    worthwhile?

    Findingrolemodelscanbechallenginginsomeworkplacesandyoumaysometimes

    have to look outside the work environment to other sources e.g. approach high

    achieversinyourfieldfromotherbusinessesorspeaktoconsultantswhohavehad

    muchexperience inyour industry (youdbeamazedathowmuch informationyou

    candownloadover30minsforthecostof2cupsofcoffee).

    Therearenosecretshere folks,the formulaprovidestheanswer i.e. ifyouhavea

    clear focusof theoutcome requiredofyou, ifyouunderstandall the rulesof the

    game, if you apply yourself completely and look to improve with every

    attemptthen you, too will begin to achieve this deep level of satisfaction and

    accomplishmentthatsomanypeopledo.

    Through repetition you begin to not only own the skill but become the skill. It

    becomespartofyouandsomethingthatyouwillalwayshaveatyourcalling.
