young person would like to acquire in his/her life. This career has been primarily male
oriented although legallythere is no ban on girlstaking up thisprofession. However, over the
yearsgirls have star ted choosing seafar ing as a chal lenging profession .
For the young boys and girls this isone of the bestcareersamong the variousprofessions
which are available in India. It gives considerable job satisfaction, it is economicallyverylucrative and it also leads to various openings for those who would not like to continue
working on ships for a long time but would be interested in occupying variousprestigious
positionsin merchant navyrelatedjobsashore.
The basicrequirement for such a young person isthathe/she should
a) be reasonablyphysicallyfit,
(b) be willing to work hard both physicallyand mentally,
(c) have a liking for travelingacrossthe world.
Naturally, by virtue of having to work onboard the ships,he/she would be away from his/her
family for longduration and would probably be cut off from the mainstream of society
ashore. However, these drawbacks are compensated to a considerable extent by modern
mode of communicationswhich has now been incorporated on board every shipand which
enables him/her to keep in touch with all his/her near and dear ones regardless of where
his/her shipisin any part of the world.
