The D-Link ShareCenter Pulse, 2-Bay Network Storage shares your documents, photos, music, and videos across the Internet so family members, friends, or employees canaccess them. This enclosure, which can hold two 3.5” SATA hard drives of any capacity, creates a central point for backing up valuable files. The built-in RAID 1 mirroringtechnology protects these files from drive failure. Other options such as Standard, JBOD, and RAID 0 are also available.

The ShareCenter Pulse shares files over the Internet via the built-in FTP server or the built-in AjaXplorer web file server. Users and groups can be created and assigned tofolders with either read or read/write permissions. Quotas can be set per user or group to restrict space usage. In addition, the ShareCenter Pulse can be used to streamphotos, music, and videos to UPnP AV compatible network media players. The included CD contains D-Link’s Easy Search Utility. This utility allows you to locate the ShareCenter Pulse on the network and map drives to your computer. Backupsoftware included on the CD allows you to backup your files from a computer to the ShareCenter Pulse manually, by a schedule, or in real-time. Real-time backups are agreat way to safeguard against unfortunate accidents that may result in the loss of important files.

These lights will be solid BLUE when drives are connected but inactive. The lights will blink when the drives are beingaccessed, formatted or synchronized. They will illuminate AMBER if a drive has failed.

This light will illuminate when a USB device is inserted into the USB Port. When there’s traffic this light will blink.

This is the USB Port. Devices like a USB Print Server, UPS or USB drive can be inserted here.

This light will illuminate when this ShareCenter Pulse is powered on.

Press this button once to power on the ShareCenter Pulse. Press and hold the button until it begins to blink to power down theShareCenter Pulse.

Press this button to copy data from USB drive to ShareCenter Pulse. Press and hold 5 seconds to un-mount USB drive.

This hook can be used to neatly store the cables connected to the ShareCenter Pulse.

The supplied power adapter connects here.

A pinhole button located beside the Ethernet socket is used to reset the system or restore the factory default settings.

Note: After resetting the unit you will still be able to access the data on your hard drives.

This is the rear fan used for ventilation.

A Gigabit Ethernet port that connects the ShareCenter Pulse to a network.

This lock can be used to tie the ShareCenter Pulse to the desk to prevent theft. Cables are sold separately.

Hardware SetupThis section provides installation information for the ShareCenter Pulse. To install the ShareCenter Pulse on your local network, refer to the steps below:

1. To remove the top cover you have move the cover lock to the right. 2. While holding the cover lock, slide the top cover backwards. Aftersliding the top cover backwards, lift the top cover up to remove it.

3. Insert a 3.5” SATA hard drive into an available drive bay. 4. Re-attach the top cover.

5. Connect an Ethernet cable to the available Ethernet port. This cable shouldconnect the ShareCenter Pulse to your local network via a router or switch, ordirectly to a computer for configuration.

Make sure to align the drive connector to the SATA connector on the bottom edge inside the drive bay of the ShareCenter Pulse. Gently push the drive in until it connects.When a drive is inserted properly, you will feel it “seat” into the connector. Some hard drives that are thin or oddly shaped may need to be guided carefully into position. If adrive is not properly seated, the light will not illuminate after powering on the device.

When first powered on, during the initial boot sequence, the ShareCenter Pulse will wait to be assigned an IP address via DHCP. It is recommended that you use the included

D-Link Easy Search Utility when accessing and configuring the ShareCenter Pulse for the first time. If you want to change the IP address before logging in, or if you areunable to connect to the ShareCenter Pulse IP address, you can use the Easy Search Utility provided on the product CD to locate the device on your network and make anyneeded changes.

RAID 1.

JBOD - Combines both hard drives in a linear fashion

which will create one large volume geared towardsmaximum available space.RAID 0 - Combines both hard drives in a striped fashionwhich will create one large volume geared towardsmaximum performance.RAID 1 - Mirrors the hard drives for redundancy. Ifone hard drive fails, the other still contains all of thedata. Replace the failed hard drive and it will re-mirror,restoring data protection.

Standard - Creates two separate volumes (or onevolume if only one hard drive is present). Each hard driveis its own volume.

When prompted to configure the Hard Drive Settings:Select the type of hard drive configuration. In thisconfiguration we’ll use RAID 1 as the exampleconfiguration.

Auto-rebuild is a feature that allows the ShareCenter

Pulse to initiate the rebuilding phase automatically. Therebuilding phase will occur when one or more hard drivesfail and is replaced by a new one.

WARNING - This feature will automatically format thenewly added drive. If this feature is NOT required, clickdisable.

Setup SectionOn the Wizard page the user can configure some basic

settings for this device. The Storage Enclosure, providesa convenient and safe location on the network for storingdata and media.

On the LAN Setup page the user can configure the LinkSpeed and to the IP address as a DHCP client or Static IP.

On the Time and Date page the user can configure severaldifferent options concerning the device’s internal clock. Itis important that an accurate time is set so that scheduledbackups and downloads will be accurate.

By selecting ‘DHCP Client’, the ShareCenter Pulse willact as a DHCP client and obtain its LAN IP settings fromthe DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) serveron the local network. By default, the ShareCenter Pulse isset to obtain an IP address from a DHCP server on yournetwork.

If necessary, you can assign a static IP address to theShareCenter Pulse.

The IP address of each device on the local area network must be within the same IP address range and subnet mask. For a small subnet withless than 253 IP addresses assigned (e.g. Class C private IP), each device on the LAN (Local Area Network) needs have a unique IP Address inthe format of (example) 192.168.0.x to connect to other devices within the same network.

Specify the subnet mask for the ShareCenter Pulse. The Subnet mask must be the same for all devices on the same subnet of the network. Thedefault subnet setting is 255.255.255.0. For a small subnet with less than 253 IP addresses assigned (e.g. Class C private IP), keep this defaultsetting.

Specify the Gateway IP Address for the ShareCenter Pulse. The Gateway IP Address is almost always the LAN address of your router. MostD-Link routers have a default LAN IP address of 192.168.0.1.

Specify the first and second DNS Addresses for the ShareCenter Pulse. A DNS Address will allow the ShareCenter Pulse to resolve names intoIP addresses. Example: Without a DNS address, the ShareCenter Pulse would not be able to contact an FTP site such as ftp.dlink.com (name).Instead, you would need to use 64.7.210.131 (IP address). It is recommended that you enter DNS addresses when setting a Static IP Address.

Often you can use the LAN IP address of your router as a DNS address. Click ‘Save Settings’ when finished.

Enter the complete time and date settings manually. Click‘Save Settings’ to apply these settings. To synchronize thedevice clock with your computer, click the ‘Set time frommy computer’ button.

correct time on the internal system clock. In this section you can set the time zone thatyou are in, and set the NTP (Network Time Protocol) Server in order to periodicallyupdate your system time from the NTP Server. You can also use your computer’s timeas the system time.

The section allows you to create and manage useraccounts and groups. Here you can set user and groupprivileges for specific shared folders. Up to 64 users and10 groups can be created.

The Network Shares page allows the user to configureshared folders and rights to specific users and groups.

This section allows you to assign a quota to a group oruser to limit the amount of storage they are allocated. Bydefault, users and groups do not have a quota.

This section allows you to configure the settings of the

built-in FTP server.

This section allows you to configure the UPnP AV server.You can enable or disable the UPnP AV service, andspecify the folder or directory that will be shared.

This section allows you to configure the iTunes server.You can enable or disable the iTunes service, set thepassword for the service, and specify the folder ordirectory that will be shared.

Users and Groups can be created here. Users’ accountscan be added to rules in the Network Shares and FTPServer sections. Each user created will also have accessto the Scheduled Download section. Once a group hasbeen created, it will be available in the Group selection onthe Users page. The created groups will appear in a listnear the bottom of this page. Users within these groupswill also be displayed.

Group Settings:

The Network Shares Settings window allows the user toadd, modify and remove new and existing network sharerules.

To add a rule click on the ‘Add’ button. To modify anexisting rule click on the ‘Modify’ button. To remove arule click on the ‘Delete’ button.

To select a rule, simply click on the rule and the entry

should change to a red color that indicates it’s selectedfor use.

Use the radio buttons to select the type of server thatthe source files/folders for the Schedule Downloads arelocated on. Click the HTTP radio button to specify thatthe source files are located on a web server. Click the FTPradio button to specify that the source files/folders arelocated on an FTP server.

Enter the login information for the site that contains thefiles that you want to schedule for downloading. If nopassword is required, choose ‘Anonymous’. If a password

is required, choose ‘Account’ and provide the user nameand password.

Select either ‘File’ or ‘Folder’ from the drop-down listdepending on whether you wish to download a file or afolder. Choose ‘File’ if you wish to download a specificfile. Choose ‘Folder’ if you wish to download all the filesin a specific folder.

Enter the FTP/ HTTP site address for the scheduleddownload. Click on ‘Test’ to verify access to the siteaddress and file/folder. If you have chosen ‘File’ from theabove drop down list, you must specify the exact file inthe URL path, including the file extension. (e.g. http:// example.com/test/testfile.txt).

Enter the specific destination on the internal drives for thedownloaded files or folders to be saved to. Click ‘Browse’to browse the internal drives.
