Head Speaks…..
I would like to express my sincere thanks to
the college authorities for their continuedsupport and I am delighted to place on record
that Academic year 2011-12 has been an
exciting year in the department. We tried our
best to upgrade and streamline the facilities in
the department, such as:
Purchase of CNC M/C in the department
Proposal for ME Energy Engg.
Research proposal in the area of
Alternative Fuels
Expansion and up-gradation of Dept. Labs.
Student & Faculty participation at national
and International level.
Department also contributed significantly in
academics, publications and administrative
activities. Our focus is on quality projects and
innovative activities. We have promoted the
Institute Industry Interaction and faculty
development through higher studies and
research work. Department also supported
students by creating opportunities for better
placement. We are also keen to explorethe possibilities to accelerate our research
program and prepare our staff to tackle new
challenges in the years ahead. Our biggest
challenge over the next few years will be to
create infrastructure and financial support for
our activities.
Students and especially mech. engineering
students are not only showing their individual
creativity but they are also successful in group
activities of the department. These activities
serve as incubators of new ideas and develop
confidence to play for win.
One thing I hope to accomplish in coming
years is to establish a dialog with our alumni.
Incremental improvement in this direction
and change of our mindset will definitely
bridge the gap between industry and institute.
They are in better position to tell us thepreparedness of our students for their
careers. We are also ready to work hand in
hand with our alumni to ensure the
performance of our students as an ultimate
winner.
I wish to place on record, the appreciation
and contribution of Management, Principal,
staff and students at all levels, without which
the progress achieved, would have been
unattainable. I look forward for strongsupport in development and progress of the
department.
With regards...
Prof. Ajay Gangrade

Arise ! O man. The bright dawn
heralds a new day. Its rosy lances have
opened the golden gates of the Sun.
And lit up the path of action. The
darkness of the night is over. We have
arrived where life is carried ever
forward on the path of progress.

Power of BreathThe breath is a vitalizing, regenerating
force which you can utilize consciously
for self-development. By controlling the
act of breathing you can efficiently
control all the motions and nerve
currents running through the body. Youcan easily and quickly control and
develop the body, mind and soul. For our
body breath is like a flywheel of an
engine.
Skill in ActionSkill in action is karma yoga. It is a great
art. You have to take as much interest in
each act that you perform daily as an
artist takes in his paintings. The artist
puts the brush after keen deliberation, his entire being is focused on the
painting and he works self-forgetfully.
This should be your attitude. Take
interest in all that you do and at the
same time be detached from all your
actions.
Positive ThinkingAs you think, so you become. As are your
thought, so must be your life. The world
around you is only what you believe it to
be. The limit of your thought is the limitof your possibilities.

Students’ Mega Projects
Orion Racing TeamFaculty Advisor:
Prof. B. M. PradhanCaptain: Rehan Netarwala
In the second week of January, the
registration quiz for Formula Student
Germany was held. Orion Racing India
managed to secure the third place in the quiz
and booked itself a place on one of the
premier engineering design competitions.
After the registration, the team, having frozen
their designs in the previous month, focused
its attention on manufacturing the car. The
main aim of the team, at this point of time,
was to finish the fabrication of the car as soon
as possible in order to have more time for
testing.
In February, the team started with the
manufacturing of the chassis at the facility
provided by KLT Automotive and Tubular
Products. The enthusiastic team finished the
chassis in record time. This year, TIG welding
was used in the chassis fabrication which gave
us some really neat welds. In order to position
the suspension mounts accurately, aCoordinate Measuring Machine was used.
As the chassis was being manufactured, other
parts of the car were also being manufactured
and they started coming in. This year, we used
the radical technology of Rapid Prototyping in
order to manufacture the Airbox and the
thermostat housing for cooling.
As the month of March started, the team,
with all the manufactured products in hand,
started mounting them on the chassis. Theteam spent many sleepless nights in order to
sort out all the interferences and
manufacturing errors. The result of this
intense hard work was the first run of the car
that took place on 20th
March, 2012. The car
ran without any issues and team was thrilled
at the result of their perseverance.
Since then, the team has been rigorously
testing the car and making improvements
based on the results that have been procured.
The progress of the team has been
phenomenal and is looking forward to
perform well at Formula Student Germany.
The 2012 model Arion unveiling was done on
3rd
July 2012. The Arion is the newest of the
Orion race cars. According to Greek
mythology, The Arion is a divinely bred, extremely swift, immortal horse.
it took 60 Team Members, 10 Months and
100,000 Man Hours to build The Arion.
Budget
The cost of the entire project this year was a
whopping 17 lakhs, all of which has been
collected by students thus teaching them
marketing,budgeting and financial
management. Union Bank of India came
forward as Title Sponsors this year and helpedthe team reach their target.
Features of The Arion
The Arion uses cutting edge technology in
design and manufacturing so that the car is
not only durable, but it is also competitive.
The team uses Carbon Fibre for certain parts
to keep them light weight yet incredibly
strong. Orion Racing India has also ventured
into the field of Rapid Manufacturing,
currently unfamiliar in India, with the help oftheir sponsors Imaginarium.
0 – 100 km/h: 4.4 seconds

THE SOMAIYAAEROMODELLING CELL(Team ONYX and Team THROTTLE)
Faculty Advisor:
Prof. Prashant Jain
Team ONYXCaptain: Neil Sinha
The Team Onix
Team Onyx is a team of zealous students
dedicated to the hobby of aeromodelling. It
was established in year 2011 for the design
and manufacture of radio controlled, heavy
lifting aircraft model and also a platform to
exhibit our practical knowledge and grow as
confident individuals for a stronger
tomorrow.
What’s an RC Aircraft?
A radio-controlled aircraft (often called RC
aircraft or RC plane) is controlled remotely by
a hand-held transmitter and a receiver within
the aircraft. The receiver controls the
corresponding servos that move the control
surfaces based on the position of joysticks on
the transmitter, which in turn affect the
orientation of the plane.
SAE Aero Design West, USA
The team represents the college and the
country by participating in an international
event named “SAE Aero Design West” in U.S.
In our very first year, Team ONYX stood 25th
all over the world (5th
in Presentation) and 3rd
in INDIA in regular class competition.
We would like to express our deepest
gratitude to Prof. A.S. Thosar, Prof. A. K.
Gangrade (HOD) and Prof. Prashant Jain
(faculty incharge) for their support and
wishes.
Team THROTTLECaptain: Chandan Pathak
This year witnessed the formation of ‘Team
THROTTLE’, a group of 8 passionate FE
mechanical students (now in SE) dedicated to
the hobby of aeromodelling. The objective is
to get the most out of the basic concepts of
engineering and applying the same. Our team
members are Aditya, Avisha, Bhaumik, Chirag,
Deep, Gaurangi and Harshal. Aeromodelling is
a wonderful hobby, and we wish to promote
the same in our college.
About the RC Superhero Project
Our current project ‘RC Superhero’ aims at
designing and fabricating a Radio-Controlled
(RC) human shaped superhero. It is a unique
aerobatic human shaped aircraft with
maximum maneuverability . With this we can
create an illusion of a superhuman flying in
the sky. The shape of the model being itself a
challenge created many aerodynamiccomplications during the designing process.
The model has a good market potential and
can be used in science fiction movies.
The design is over and fabrication is expected
to be over by the third week of this month. By
the end of this month test flight is expected to
take place.
We are thankful to the Principal, Prof. A. K.
Gangrade (HOD Mech) and our faculty advisor
Prof. Prashant Jain for their wholeheartedsupport.

ONYX Experience at SAE
Aero Design West, USA
On 13th
March 2012 Tejas Purandare (TE
Mechanical) and Sohrab Mistry (SE
Mechanical) left for the SAE aero design west
event to be held at Van Nuys, California on
behalf of TEAM ONYX, KJSCE. The fact that we
were stopped and questioned at the Mumbai
airport for carrying 14 kg brass (our payload)
added to our fear of facing a USA immigration
officer. Much to our amuse the immigration
officer was very co-operative. Soon after we
came out of the airport, a policeman greeted
us and helped us get a cab.
The next two days were spent in the motel
room preparing for the presentations and
completing the finishing work on the model.
We were staying along with 10 students of
VJTI, Mumbai. The only reason to go out was
for food. Being vegetarians we found it hard
to find a good place to eat. Even a local
McDonalds was not having any veg burgers!
Pizzas were the only rescue .
On 16th
March at 2.00 pm we reached the
Airtel Plaza Hotel for our presentations. Thereception area was specially decorated for the
event. Large size model aircrafts were on
display. Our technical inspector, Bob - a 60 yr
old guy, amassed with experience, was quick
to start his work – checking the presence of
baffle plates in the engine, ensuring the
engine was an OS61FX as prescribed by the
rulebook, measuring all the major dimensions
to ensure they were as per the design report
submitted by us and also ensuring that
SPYTHUN V (our plane name) was flyingworthy and won’t cause any harm to the
spectators. In about 45 minutes the inspection
got over – we were given an ALL OKAY
certificate and permitted to fly on the
following two days.
Soon we were called in for the presentations.
As we began the judges introduced
themselves as from Lockheed Martin,
Solidworks, Ansys and Boeing. It was a
wonderful experience to market SPYTHUN V in
front of them. Followed by the presentation
were a 5 min question and answer session and
finally the payload loading and unloading
demonstration which was to be completed in
60 seconds each. Later that evening we learnt
that we were placed 18th
for the design and
presentation scores with a 5th
best design
score!
On 17 th
morning, much to our dismay it was
raining pretty heavily and so flying was
postponed. The next day as well it was cloudy
with just a slight drizzle. Sadly the number of
rounds of flying got reduced from 9 to just 3.
In the third round because of the wet runway
and the payload our SPYTHUN V slipped off
the runway. So in the final standing we got
declined from 18th
to 25th
position. After the
competition was over, specialist pilots were
called for flying large size RC jets as well as 3-
D flying RC planes to mark the closing
ceremony of the event. We also witnessed the
world’s largest paper plane flying high into the
LA sky.
Overall the event was excellent and well
organized. In spite of rain playing a spoilsport,
the organizers managed to get 3 rounds of
flying. It was also a great opportunity for us to
interact with personalities from Boeing and
Lockheed Martin which otherwise would nothave been possible. The event was played in
right spirit where the motto was not just to
win but to improve. All the teams were very
helpful to each other and open for discussions
regarding their work. The trip also enabled us
to witness the way of living of the Americans,
their discipline and their patience.
Towards the end we had a 2 day off which we
spent by visiting the much acclaimed Universal
Studios, the Kodak theatre (the home of the
Oscar Awards), lake balboa host of tons of
ducks and swans and a little shopping.

Thought to Ponder
Leadership is like moving a string. You
cannot move it by pushing from behind.
What you have to do is to get ahead and
pull.

A Word from the
Newsletter TeamReporting of departmental activities and
events is no doubt the main objective of a
newsletter. But we feel that, along with
addressing work life at the institute, a
newsletter should touch upon
psychological, emotional and spiritual
aspects of our personality too, which are the
very foundation of our performance at work.
This newsletter is an outcome of our
conscious effort to achieve this end, of
course, without preaching or being pompous, just by creative use of filler
spaces.
We hope you would appreciate this
endeavor of ours and enrich us with your
valuable feedback.
