Eduardo, a D.DELI team member expressed: “It was a pleasure to serve the Hairy Bikers not because they are famous, but because they appreciate the good things in life. To receive their compliments on the quality of our products was a great motivation for D.DELI to continue our focus in supplying exceptional quality products.”

Simon King telling the NATA Story at D.DELI, watch the video...

NATA is a Portuguese type of Custard Tart. NATA is the ‘King of the Cakes’, the No.1. Everyone has their own secret recipe. D.DELI believes they have the best. Have you tried D.DELI NATA’s? How many have you eaten? If you have not tried them you are welcome to visit D.DELI at Bolton Market, Ashburner Street, BL1 1TJ. Not to be missed!

NATA is the ideal sweet treat for any type of event, the right balance between the crispy and crackling puff pastry and the filling in the middle topped with a little cinnamon sprinkle to compliment the lemon zest. It is also ideal to be

accompanied with a good expresso coffee. At D.DELI we are inspired by our slogan: “Adding Flavour to Life...”

Raffle No.29 Was The Lucky WinnerBolton Food and Drink Festival 09By John Bronco

Over the weekend of 28th of August D. Deli was present at Bolton Food and Drink Festival 2 0 0 9 . We t h a n k a l l t h e customers and everyone involved for the support provided at the Festival. We have enjoyed providing a delicious ride of Portuguese gastronomic displays.

Barry and Caroline Preece from Rochdale were the Lucky Draw Winners of a 15L Keg of Red Wine Touriga Nacional with the Raffle No.29. They bought Raffle No.29 and No.99.

This excellent wine is a blend of Touriga Nacional and Castelao 14% vol.

Tour i g a g rape va r i e t y i s considered, by many, to be Portugal’s finest, presenting small grapes of round shape and of black-blue colour. It produces great wines, especially in terms

of structure, colour and aroma and with an elegant body. This grape variety plays a great part in the blends used for the best ports.

Castelao (Piriquita) is a red wine grape variety presenting clusters and grapes of medium size and average thick skin and black-bluish colour. Personalised a r o m a s a n d a l c o h o l i c g raduat ions are ob ta ined through the wine making process.

This wine is best served at 16º to 18º.

D. Deli was very happy to deliver the prize to Barry and Caroline Preece. They can now enjoy this very distinctive and so easy to drink Portuguese wine blend from a former World Champion Victor Horta.

Apart from the Ports and Mateus Rose, Portuguese wine is not widely known in UK but is for sure the r ight choice for connoisseurs.

If you wish to buy this wine at our shop, you can buy the 15L Keg or bring your own bottle to refill. Be responsible, drink moderately.

No.29 Barry & Caroline P r e e c e f r o m Rochdale were the Lucky Winners of a 15L Keg of Red W i n e T o u r i g a Nacional.

À Saúde (A Toast to Health) D.DELI and Barry Preece the

Leiria, Portugal

A Region with a Soul

By John Bronco

Bem-vindo! Welcome!

The Leiria/Fátima Tourist Region has a vast, diversified, fascinating cultural and historical legacy. Its natural beauty, the unequalled coastline, imposing monuments of many tales and legends and the sites of pilgrimage that will bring spiritual comfort. Come and discover values and emotions and live an unforgettable experience in a Region with a Soul!

The Roses MiracleThe Saint Isabel Queen

The true ‘miracle of the roses’ legend is well known in the region and one of the most beautiful religious legends. One of the most popular Portuguese Queens was Isabel of Aragon (also known as Saint Queen Isabel), beloved wife of King Dinis. She came to Portugal when she was twelve years old to marry the King. She was of a legendary beauty and serenity and passed most of her time doing good to the people around her. She was also very religious, modest and was always willing to protect everyone from misery by frequently visiting and treating the sick.

One morning Queen Isabel went out to distribute bread and money to the poor, since it was her habit, using the absence of her husband. The King D. Dinis was returning to the palace from Leiria, after his benefactor visits. The King seeing his wife always involved with the poor forbidden the Queen to give handouts.

Queen Isabel rushed walking back to the castle and was nearly arriving when a cavalier approached. It was King D. Dinis who decided to confront the Queen seeing her lap so voluptuous he thought he had caught her in the act:- What are you holding in your lap, my noble Lady? The Queen hesitated before answering:

- These are roses, my Lord, these are roses! Answered the Queen leaving the King angry for her disobedience, it was impossible there is no roses in this season.

- Can I see those January roses? asked the King ironically.

- If it is only by seeing you believe in my word...  and smoothly the Queen Isabel uncovered her lap and everyone saw beautiful roses falling from her lap and this left the King not believing his own eyes and exclaiming:

- Miracle! Miracle! In January there is no roses, this can only be a Miracle!

RecipesPortuguese cuisine healthy eating

delicious flavours

By John Bronco

This month we want to bring to you a delicious, simple to cook and healthy dish “Caldeirada (Mix Stew) de Peixe (Fish)”. Take control of your kitchen and be ready to impress.

Preparation: 1) Cut the Garlic into thin slices and chop a hand full of coriander. 2) Cut the Potatoes, Onions, Tomatoes, Green and Red Pepper into thin slices (Ring Shape). 3) Wash the fish and cut them into thick slices/steaks and salt it with sea salt to taste.

Execution: 1) In a deep pan/wok place the ingredients in layers within the following order: Onions, Tomato, Green and Red Peppers, Potatoes (add the paprika only to provide a little bit of colour and squirts of tomato paste as you are painting a beautiful dish) and Fish (add the garlic and the Bay leaf and crushed chilli seeds to taste). Repeat until all ingredients are used.

2) Give a very generous drizzle of Lusitanea 100% Extra Virgin Olive Oil. (The use of a good Olive Oil is important if you want to enhance the flavour). 3) Add a small glass of water and the white wine (beer could be a second best wine replacement). Place a lid on the pan/wok and bring to boil.4) Cook slowly over a low heat for about 15 minutes, when the potatoes are cooked all is done. 5) When all is done, add a handful of chopped coriander.

Tips: 1) Remember that the onions will also release water when judging the amount of liquid to add (water/white wine). 2) Do not mix the dish while cooking, as you want to maintain the integr i ty of the shapes of the ingredients. 3) Let the dish to rest for a few good minutes before serving to a l l o w f o r a g r e a t e r fl a v o u r concentration. 4) There is no need to add salt after cooking as salt has already been add to the dish.Serving suggestions: Accompany the dish with:1) A fresh mixed salad with a drizzle of Lusitanea 100% Extra Virgin olive oil

and vinegar with a pinch of sea salt.2) Granny’s bread cut in slices.3) A glass of white wine, Fernao Pires /Arinto (Victor Horta).

Leiria Castle

Saint Queen Isabel (1271-1336) was married when she was 12 years old to King Dinis of Portugal , a poet, and known as Rei Lavrador, or the farmer king, because he planted a large pine forest, near Leiria. The wood from these trees would later be used to make the ships during the discoveries. Isabel quietly pursued the regular rel ig ious pract ices of her maidenhood, and was devoted to the poor and sick and she lived in Leiria Castle.
