1. INTRODUCTIONThe Government of India established the National Board of Examinations (NBE)

in 1975 with the objective of improving the qualit of the Medical Education

b establishing high and uniform standards of postgraduate examinations in

modern medicine on an all India basis and utilizing existing infrastructure for

capacit building.

NBE at present conducts postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations in

approved specialties leading to the award of Diplomate of National Board. The

Medical Council of India has laid down standards for postgraduate examinations

conducted b various medical colleges and afliated to concerned universities

and other institutions, et the levels of procienc and standards of evaluation

var considerabl in these institutions.

The Examinations conducted b NBE provide a common standard and

mechanism of evaluation of minimum level of attainment of the knowledge andcompetencies of medical specialties. Moreover, intra countr and international

comparisons are facilitated with the availabilit of common evaluation mechanism.

RECOGNITION OF DNB QUALIFICATIONS

The Nomenclature of the qualification awarded b the National Board

of Examinations is “Diplomate of National Board”. The list of recognized

qualications awarded b the Board in various Broad and Super specialties

as approved b the Government of India and included in the First Schedule

of IMC Act 1956 is as given in Annexure-I A.

As per the Indian Medical Council Act 1956; the power to recognize medical

qualication and determine their equivalence rests with the central government.

The Diplomate qualications awarded b the National Board of Examinations

are equated with the postgraduate and post doctorate degrees awarded b

other Indian Universities for all purposes including appointment to teaching

posts as lecturer/Assistant Professor b the Government of India, Ministr of

Health and Famil Welfare; vide their notications issued from time to time.

The holders of Board’s qualication awarded after an examination i.e. DNB areeligible to be considered for specialist’s post/facult in an hospital including

a training/teaching institution on a teaching post/as a facult member.

Diplomate National Board qualications are well recognized and accepted as

high standard specialist qualications.

2. INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES

2.1. DNB – Final is an exit examination leading to the award of DNB

qualication.

2.2. A candidate holding a medical qualification (MD/MS) i.e. having

passed the nal examination in a broad specialt recognized as per

the provisions of Indian Medical Council Act 1956 as amended fromtime to time OR a candidate registered with NBE as a DNB trainee and

obtaining requisite period of training as prescribed b the NBE & fullling

other eligibilit criteria as stated in this Information Bulletin ma appear

for the DNB nal examination (Broad Specialt) provided that MD/MS

degree has been awarded to MD/MS candidates on or before

30th April, 2016.

2.3. The examinations are held onl as per the schedule of examinations

prescribed b NBE from time to time.

2.4 Applications for admission to the examination should denitel reach

NBE b the specied date.

2.5 The list of specialties in which examination will be conducted can be

seen at Annexure II.

2.6. Information given b the candidate in the application form shall be

certied b the head of the institution at the appropriate place and

the application shall be supported b the relevant documents.

Candidates shall get their forms signed by Head of Institute where

they have been trained or where they are working presently.2.7. Applications of candidates producing false or fabricated records will not

be considered and the candidate ma be further debarred from appearing

in an future examinations.

2.8. Candidates should go through this bulletin carefull for eligibilit criteria

before writing to NBE. Queries pertaining to eligibilit and other issues

will onl be entertained if the information requested is not given in the

bulletin or on website www.natboard.edu.in

2.9. Incomplete applications or application not in accordance with prescribed instructions will not be considered. In such cases, the examination fee

shall not be refunded.

2.10. Fee shall neither be carried forward to a future date nor refunded under

an circumstances. Applications received after the due date shall be

returned in original.

2.11. Candidate found to be ineligible at any stage of DNB examination,

will not be permitted to appear in the examination. In an unlikely

event of any ineligible candidate appearing and/or passing the

DNB examination, the results/candidature of such candidate shall

be cancelled and/or are deemed to be cancelled.

2.12. Instructions in the information-bulletin are liable to change based on

decisions taken b the NBE from time to time. However, candidates shallbe governed b Information Bulletin vide which the were registered for

determining the eligibilit. For theor & Practical Exams the candidates

shall be governed b Information Bulletin b which the appl for the

theor Examinations.

2.13 NBE reserves the right to withdraw permission, if any, granted

inadvertently to any candidate who is not eligible to appear in the

DNB Examinations even though the admit card/roll number has

been issued or name/roll number is displayed on NBE website.

2.14 Candidates’ eligibilit is purel provisional & is subjected to the

fulllment of meeting eligibilit criteria as dened b NBE.

2.15 a. NBE reserves its absolute rights to alter the examination schedule,

pattern, polic and guidelines at an time during the continuation or after

the completion of DNB training (2 or 3 ears/as the case ma be.) The

candidate shall have no right whatsoever for claiming/deriving an right

from past or present schedule, polic and guidelines of NBE.

2.16. The existing schedule, pattern, polic and guidelines are for read

2.20. Absentees from the examination shall forfeit their examination fee.

2.21. Photocop of the filled in application form ma be retained b the

candidate for future reference.

2.22. All certificates (photocopies) should be self attested/self-certified.

Unattested/Uncertified copies will not be accepted under an

2.24. Candidates should ensure before appling for the registration that their

MBBS/MD/MS/Diploma is recognized b MCI. If it is found at an time

that the Degree/Diploma is not recognized b MCI then NBE will have

the right to cancel the registration.

Registration with NBE is mandator for all candidates appearing in DNBExaminations.

The above fee is inclusive of examination fees and information bulletin.

Please note that this is a composite fee (as above) inclusive of fees for the

examination and information bulletin. Information Bulletin shall be available

at website for information.Deposition of Fees: By Cash Deposit.

The fee as above can be deposited at an branch of the Indian Bank or

Axis Bank; The list of branches of Axis Bank and Indian Bank can be seen

at their website www.axisbank.com and www.indianbank.in respectivel.

Kindl use the pa-in-slip provided along with this Information Bulletin

for this purpose. Pa-in-slip can also be downloaded from NBE Website

www.natboard.edu.in . NBE cop of pa-in-slip is required to be submitted

in original along with application form.

Kindly Note:-

Fee submitted through demand draft shall not be accepted. Candidates

remaining absent from the examination shall forfeit their examination fee.

Candidates are advised to read the rule position carefully and satisfy the

terms and conditions for fulllment of eligibility criteria. Fees shall neither be

4. EXAMINATION

For Broad Specialties:

The DNB Final is a two-stage examination comprising of theor and practical

examination.

An eligible candidate who has qualied the theor examination is permitted to

appear in the practical examination.

A candidate unsuccessful in the rst attempt of practical examination is permitted

to undertake two more attempt(s) in practical examination, these attempts shall

be an two practical exams of the exams placed with the next three sessions

of theor examination and after pament of full examination fees as ma be

prescribed b NBE.

(Example : candidates qualifing theor examination in June 2016 session

shall appear for their rst attempt in the practical exams placed in Sep/Oct/Nov

2016 session compulsoril and in the event of the not passing this practical

examination, the candidate(s) ma take an two attempts at the practical exams

4.1 Eligibility (Broad Specialty) :

trainee at an National Board of Examinations accredited institute or an

Submission of proof of having MD/MS degree on or before 30th April 2016 is

an essential prerequisite. In case the candidate does not submit the requisite

proof of MD/MS degree his/ her application shall be rejected & fees forfeited.

C. Post Diploma : Candidates who are registered with NBE and completing

their prescribed training (as per the registration letter) b 15th October, 2016are eligible (Admission Session July 2014) Submission of Training Completion

Certicate along with leave records for DNB trainees is an essential prerequisite.

In case the candidate does not submit the training Completion certicate and

leave records (as per applicable format given in Annexure-III & IV) with the

application form, his/her application ma be rejected and fees forfeited.

Candidates not completing their DNB training at the time of submitting

the application are required to submit provisional training completion

certicate as per format in Annexure-III along with leave records andalso required to submit Annexure-IV within 15 days of completion of their

training. Such candidates shall be provisionally allowed to appear for

DNB Examination at sole discretion of NBE and subject to compliance of

eligibility criteria prescribed.

All candidates registered with NBE have to submit a self-attested copy

of the registration letter/registration number issued by NBE with the

4.2 Thesis Submission to NBE

As per NBE norms, writing a thesis is essential for all DNB candidates towards

partial fulllment of eligibilit for award of DNB degree certicate.

DNB candidates are required to submit their thesis before the cutoff date which

shall be 30th June of same ear for candidates appearing for their scheduled

December nal theor examination. Similarl candidates who shall be appearingin their scheduled June DNB nal examination shall be required to submit their

thesis b 31st of preceding December.

For June 2016 exam going candidates, the prescribed cut off dates are

as follows:

4.3 Examination (Broad Specialties) :

a) Theory Examination

I. The theor examination comprises of four papers, maximummarks 100 each.

II. There are 10 short notes of 10 marks each, in each of the papers. Thenumber of short notes and their respective marks weightage ma varin some subjects/some papers.

III. Maximum time permitted is 3 hours.

IV. Candidate must score at least 50% in the aggregate of 4 papers toqualif the theor examination. Grace marks of up to 2% of maximummarks i.e. 8/400 shall be given onl to the candidates falling in the zoneof consideration i.e. securing between 192-199 marks out of 400. Forcandidates of General Medicine, Paediatrics and Family Medicinewherein Paper 4 is MCQ based, there is no grace marks in MCQbased papers. In these disciplines, grace marks of up to a maximumof 6 marks only shall be given to the candidates falling in the zoneof consideration i.e. securing between 194-199 marks out of 400.

V. Fourth paper for General Medicine, Paediatrics and Family Medicine shall be Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) based. There shall be 200questions of single response tpe. Each question shall carr 0.5 marksi.e. maximum marks shall be 100. There shall be no negative marking.There shall not be any grace marks for MCQ based paper.

VI. Onl those candidates who have qualied the theor examination arepermitted to take up the practical examination.

b) Practical Examination:

I. Maximum Marks: 300.

II. Comprises of Clinical Examination and Viva. III. Candidate must obtain a minimum of 50% marks in the Clinical

Examination (including Viva) to qualif for the Practical Examination.There is no grace marks in Practical examination.

IV. There are a maximum of three attempts that can be availed b a candidatefor Practical Examination.

V. First attempt is the practical examination following immediatel after thedeclaration of theor results.

VI. Second and Third attempt in practical examination shall be permitted outof the next three sessions of practical examinations placed alongwith

the next three successive theor examination sessions; after pamentof full examination fees as ma be prescribed b NBE.

4.5 Declaration of DNB Final Results

a. DNB nal is a qualifing examination.

b. Results of DNB nal examinations (theor & practical) are declared as

PASS/FAIL.

c. The details of marks obtained/grading in nal theor/practical Examinations

will be provided to unsuccessful candidates. Procedure for obtaining

question wise marks can be seen at NBE website (Notice dt. 20.04.10,

d. There will be no re-evaluation or rechecking/re-totaling of papers.

4.6 Enrollment Fees & Award of DNB Certificates.

All successful candidates have to pa enrolment fees of Rs.2500/-

(Two Thousand Five Hundred Onl), towards enrolment as a Diplomate

of National Board of Examinations.
