In this anniversary magazine we celebrate 25 years of DMT! We proudly present

many of the aspects of our multifaceted company to you, our valued clients,

suppliers and business contacts. We have included articles about DMT’s history

and various representative projects, as well as interviews with some of our

employees. Moving forward, we see a bright future and in this magazine we would

like to share our vision with you.

Currently our technologies are mainly related to the production of sustainable energy, in particular to the upgrading of biogas to green gas. A growing number of domestic and international clients as well as the global environment benefit through our direct contribution to the protection of our earth and climate.

Every project we undertake is a challenge. When doing business with DMT you can be assured we will take your requirements as a starting point and use innovative technology to turn concept to reality. After completion of your project, we offer first-rate service to support you. Our way of working has resulted in a substantial number of long-term customer relationships of which we are very proud.

We also invest as much effort and enthusiasm in collaborating with various knowledge partners such as universities, and we give ample space to interns. As a result DMT has attained a leading position in environmental technology and sustainable energy since 1987 while building for our future.

In a quarter of a century we have developed as innovative and dynamic specialists in the application of environmental technology for air, gas and water treatment. Der Erfolg ist, dass DMT seit 1987 beim Aufbau unserer Zukunft eine führende Position in der Umwelttechnik und den erneuerbaren Energien erreicht hat.

In einem Vierteljahrhundert sind wir zu innovativen und dynamischen Spezialisten in der Anwendung von Umwelttechnologie der Luft-, Gas- und Wasseraufbereitung geworden. Wir sind flexibel, kundenorientiert und erfüllen unsere Versprechungen. Diese Aspekte haben den höchsten Stellenwert bei DMT, wie auch bei der Entwicklung nachhaltiger Technologien auf der Grundlage unserer eigenen Forschung.

Bright future based on solid historyErwin Dirkse: “In 2000 the company became the environmental group of DVJ in Joure, a groundwork, road and civil contracting company. However, as a result of a management buy-out in 2005, DMT became an independent family business again. 75% of the shares currently owned by me, and the other 25% are owned by the NOM, a public investment company. Starting from 2001 the company became more internationally oriented and in 2003 the first trade missions took place to Hungary and later to Japan and Spain. The fact that environmental legislation became a key issue within the EU and our experience in the Netherlands helped us secure. Another key development in 2004 has been the selection of committed and professional agents and distributors abroard. Today DMT employs around 30 employees. f

Trained as a chemist, Rob Dirkse worked in various technical fields and was frequently confronted with matters such as odour abatement and other environmental problems: “In 1987 I decided to continue in this specific field as an independent entrepreneur. Due to new legislation at the end of the 80’s, a large environmental clean-up began. There was, for example, an enormous demand for ground water purification, an area in which DMT excelled. This really put the wind in our sails. For the production of these installations we even had our own plant in Doetinchem of which my son Erwin became the managing director in 1987.”

Increasingly internationally activeIn 1994 the company moved to Tolhuisweg in Heerenveen with about 10 employees. In 2001 founder Rob Dirkse retired and he was succeeded by his son Erwin, who had been managing director since 1999. Erwin Dirkse: “In 2003 DMT moved to its current premises in Joure and focussed

Eine glänzende Zukunft auf der Grundlage einer soliden GeschichteErwin Dirkse: “Im Jahr 2000 wurde das Unternehmen der operative Partner im Umweltbereich von DVJ in Joure, einer Technikfirma in den Bereichen Erdarbeiten sowie dem Straßenbau, Hochbau und Tiefbau.Allerdings wurde DMT im Wege eines Management-Buy-outs wieder zu einem Familienunternehmen. Derzeit gehört DMT zu 75 % mir und zu 25 % NOM, eine öffentliche Investgesellschaft. Ab 2001 orientierte sich das Unternehmen verstärkt dem Export. 2003 führten die ersten Aufträge nach Ungarn und später nach Japan und Spanien. Unterstützt wurden wir durch die Tatsache, dass in der EU die Umweltvorschriften eine führende Rolle einnahmen und mit unseren Erfahrungen in den Niederlanden hatten wir eine ausgezeichnete Startposition. Eine weitere wichtige Entwicklung war, dass wir ab 2004 engagierte und professionelle Agenturen und Vertriebspartner im Ausland ausgewählt haben. DMT beschäftigt heute 30 Mitarbeiter. f

Als ausgebildeter Chemiker war Rob Dirkse in mehreren Technikbereichen tätig und hat sich häufig mit Themen wie z. B. Geruch und anderen Umweltproblemen auseinanderzusetzen. “1987 beschloss ich, als selbstständiger Unternehmer auf diesem Spezialgebiet weiterzumachen. Beflügelt wurde ich durch neue Vorschriften, als z.B. Ende der 1980er Jahre mit dem Umweltgesetz eine große umwelttechnische Säuberungsaktion startete. Es gab parallel dazu, auch eine enorme Nachfrage nach Grundwasserreinigung, ein Gebiet, auf dem DMT sehr erfolgreich war. Für die Produktion dieser Anlagen hatten wir sogar unser eigenes Werk in Doetinchem. 1987 wurde mein Sohn Erwin der Geschäftsführer.“

Ausweitung der internationalen Aktivitäten1994 zog das Unternehmen mit ca. 10 Mitarbeitenden in den Tolhuisweg in Heerenveen um. 2001 zog sich der Gründer Rob Dirkse zurück. Nachfolger war sein Sohn Erwin, der bereits seit 1999 alleiniger Geschäftsführer ist. Erwin Dirkse: “Im Jahre 2003 zog DMT auf seinen jetzigen Standort in Joure um und konzentrierte sich auf Entschwefelung und die Aufbereitung von Biogas. Unsere Lösungen wurden an so fernen Orten wie China und Südamerika berühmt. In Deutschland haben wir z. B. viele Papierfabriken mit unseren Anlagen ausgerüstet.“

Safety of paramount importance“DMT considers general safety and process safeguarding of paramount importance. This is why we first carry out a risk study (HAZOP) with many of our clients during the design phase of a project and implement the results in the final design. Increasingly we are also requested to provide integrated solutions. Clients combine our biogas upgrading with, for example, waste air treatment. Another example is pre-treatment of biogas with an activated carbon filter for desulphurisation and a drying step such as we have supplied for the Rova project.” f

Project DSM Delft

Rova and Attero projectsAs part of the Natuurgas Overijssel project, DMT has delivered a Carborex® PWS Biogas upgrading installation to waste handling company Rova in Zwolle. This installation includes a cooling and heat pump, which means that a very high energy efficiency can be realized. This solution was also designed and installed at waste handling company Attero in Wijster, on a gasflow design three times the size of that at Rova.

Project DSM DelftDSM Delft has its own wastewater purification system and biogas coming from sludge that is being fermented contains a maximum of 4% H2S. This is substantial and needs to be desulphurised because the emissions otherwise exceed the legalrequirements after combustion. For DSM, DMT has designed and built a Sulfurex® installation for biogas desulphurisation based on a two-stage system. This system works under 2 bar pressure and is therefore PED approved.

Sicherheit hat oberste Priorität“Bei DMT haben die allgemeine Sicherheit und die Prozessstabilität oberste Priorität. Deshalb unternehmen wir bei vielen unserer Kunden während der Entwicklungsphase eines Projekts zunächst eine Risikountersuchung (HAZOP) und setzen die Ergebnisse in der endgültigen Konstruktion um. Wir erhalten auch immer mehr Anfragen nach integrierten Lösungen. Unsere Kunden kombinieren die Aufbereitung von Biogas z. B. mit der Abluftaufbereitung. Ein weiteres Beispiel ist die Vorbehandlung mit Aktivkohlefiltern zur Entschwefelung und einem Trocknungsschritt beim gereinigten Gas, wie im Rova-Projekt.“ f

Für die Nutzung dieses Service können unsere Kunden individuell gestaltete Serviceverträge abschließen, als Ergänzung der von ihnen selbst erbrachten täglichen Routinearbeiten. Dadurch ist gewährleistet, dass der laufende Betrieb ihrer Prozesse abgesichert ist. Bei Bedarf können sie auf das Wissen und die Erfahrung von DMT zurückgreifen, wenn prozesstechnische Betriebsprobleme auftreten.“

Rova- und Attero-ProjekteAls Teil des Projekts “Natuurgas Overijssel“ hat DMT für die Abfallaufbereitungsfirma Rova in Zwolle die Carborex® PWS-Anlage zur Qualitätsverbesserung von Biogas geliefert. Diese Anlage umfasst eine Kühl- und Wärmepumpe, mit der folglich eine sehr hohe Energieeffizienz erreicht werden kann. Die Lösung wurde außerdem bei der Abfall Behandlungsfirma Attero in Wijster entwickelt und installiert, allerdings ging es um die im Vergleich zu Rova dreifache Größenordnung.

Projekt “DSM Delft“DSM Delft besitzt sein eigenes Abwasseraufbereitungssystem; das Biogas enthält bis zu 4 % H2S. Dieser Gehalt ist erheblich und es muss eine Entschwefelung erfolgen, weil die Emissionen bei der Verbrennung den Vorschriften nach, zu hoch sind. Für DSM hat DMT eine Sulfurex® Anlage entwickelt, in der die Biogas-Entschwefelung in einem Zweiphasensystem erfolgt. Die Anlage arbeitet unter 2 bar Druck und hat deshalb eine DGRL-Zulassung.

Hamburg-based DEG brings DMT Products on the German market

Since 2011, Hamburg-based DEG has been a new business partner for DMT. DEG is responsible for marketing DMT products and know-how in Germany. Joachim Meyer of DEG: “There is a whole new and interesting market in Germany for DMT Biogas treatment systems.”

“For our customers we manage biogas projects, from the planning phase to the implementation and operation of biogas upgrading systems. We offer

additional service during the permit approval process, and customers can rely on our vast experience in the biogas sector. This synergy ensures the exclusive marketing of the Carborex® gas upgrading systems in Germany. For various installations we are currently in the final stages of concluding a contract. The DMT systems enable a flexible application of alternative energy sources. We look forward to a close and trustworthy collaboration with the DMT team in the future.“f

IWOX® ist ein langlebiges Aufbereitungssystem, das über die vergangenen sechs Jahre entwickelt und verbessert wurde, bis es den derzeitigen hohen Qualitätsstandard erreicht hat. Viltra und DMT haben das IWOX®-System in Irland, Schottland, England, Griechenland und Frankreich ausgeliefert. Das tausendste IWOX®-System wird im Jahr 2012 installiert! Bei Anwendungen außerhalb des Haushaltsbereichs oder für höhere Personenäquivalente, bieten DMT und Viltra ihre Entwicklungsleistungen für die Konstruktion spezieller Systeme zur Abwasseraufbereitung auf der Grundlage von Einsatzdaten für zahlreiche Standorte. f

Seit 2006 arbeitet die Firma Viltra als Partner mit DMT zusammen. Den Schwerpunkt dieser Partnerschaft sieht der Geschäftsführer Colm Gribben bei Angeboten fortschrittlicher Lösungen für Abwasseraufbereitungsprobleme in Irland und in anderen Ländern Europas.

Zu Beginn dieser Partnerschaft stand die Entwicklung des IWOX®-Systems für die individuelle Abwasseraufbereitung für den Hausgebrauch. In den Niederlanden wurde ihm die CE-Zertifizierung durch das Van Hall Institute für einen durchschnittlichen Wirkungsgrad von 98,5 % bei der Reinigung vergeben. Dadurch verdient es Vertrauen beim Einsatz in umweltsensiblen Anlagen, für

Success of the DMT and Viltra Partnership

Since 2006, the Irish company Viltra owned by Colm Gribben has been working in partnership with DMT to provide advanced solutions for wastewater treatment problems across Ireland and wider Europe. This partnership began with the development of the IWOX® waste water treatment system. This guarantees individual wastewater treatment for domestic applications. It has been CE Certified by the Van Hall Institute in the Netherlands to provide 98.5% average removal efficiency; enabling it to be applied confidently to environmentally sensitive

sites, which are of particular interest to the Environment Agencies. The IWOX® is a durable treatment system which has been developed and enhanced over the past six years to make it the high-quality product that it is today. Viltra and DMT together have delivered the IWOX® system across Ireland and Scotland, England, Greece and France. The 1000th IWOX® system will be installed in 2012! For applications which are not domestic in nature and for applications >10 population equivalent, DMT and Viltra offer a design service, whereby wastewater treatment systems are custom designed. f

DMT has started building the largest commercial biogas upgrading system in England on a farm near the town of Poundbury, an experimental new town based on the sustainable ideas of Prince Charles, located on the outskirts of Dorchester in the county of Dorset, England. Stuart Bennett, the owner of Heat and Power Services Ltd, is working in collaboration with DMT to get the Carborex® MS biogas upgrading system ‘up and running’ in Poundbury: “Cooperation with DMT has been a tremendous experience. The biogas generated from green waste and chicken manure at local farms will be upgraded to natural gas quality and distributed via the gas grid as of green gas to 3,800 households in the Dorchester area. In the United Kingdom my company Heat and Power Services Ltd represents DMT. For the last 15 years our company has been run as a family business. I had previously installed DMT equipment in the United Kingdom and was asked to find more projects for DMT in the UK. My company contacted the people at the Poundbury project, we gave them a presentation which resulted in an order for DMT’s commercial biogas upgrading system in England.”

DMT used to be an organisation that responded to customer requirements, whereas nowadays we increasingly operate on our own initiative and develop sustainable innovations: “We are continuously looking for new and more innovative technologies and in doing so strive for uniqueness and cooperation with other knowledge partners, such as, for example, Flexigas. The Flexigas consortium develops components for the biogas chain in order to produce, transport and use biogas as efficiently as possible. DMT has designed a specific membrane system for use within this consortium, meant to separate CO2 from biogas. We are building a pilot at the Accres project in Lelystad.”

Project GreeceIn Greece DMT has realised a desulphurisation system by combining the Sulfurex® with the BioSulfurex® system. This smartly integrated duo combines the best of two worlds: chemical and biological desulphurisation with simultaneous drying of the gas. In addition to Greece, this technology has been applied in Romania and nine other locations.

Project TurkeyAt two large landfills in Istanbul, DMT has installed a leachate treatment system, in collaboration with a Dutch contractor, one of the largest companies in the field of filtration systems. DMT was responsible for the biological part of this water purification, the largest of its kind in Europe. f

Actively involved on a personal level with sustainabilityRobert applies the sustainability concept to his private life as well: “My private car is a green biogas car and in other fields I also strive to contribute to a better and more sustainable world. Within the Big Five for Life concept I have been given the opportunity to open up a DMT branch abroad in two years’ time, based on market research.”

DMT BioSulfurex® biological biogas desulphurisation plant at Champteussé-sur-Baconne nearby Angers in France. The conditioned biogas is used as fuel in a biogas engine.

Projekt GriechenlandIn Griechenland hat DMT eine Entschwefelungsanlage realisiert, indem das Sulfurex®-System mit dem BioSulfurex®-System kombiniert wurde. Dieses intelligent integrierte Duo kombiniert das Beste aus zwei Welten: chemische und biologische Entschwefelung bei gleichzeitiger Gastrocknung. Außer in Griechenland wurde diese Technik in Rumänien und an neun weiteren Standorten eingesetzt.

Projekt TürkeiAn zwei großen Deponien in Istanbul hat DMT ein Sickerwasser-Aufberei-tungssystem in Kooperation mit einem niederländischen Unternehmen, einer der größten Firmen im Bereich von Filtriersystemen, installiert.
