1 Use in Accordance with Regulations The DMT10-2/DML40-2 is a compact optical distance sensor. It measures the distance to an object or reflector based on the principle of time of flight measurement. Typical applications include filling level measurements and slab measurements (DMT) or the positioning of rail mounted vehicles such as storage and retrieval units or cranes (DML). 2 Safety Notes This is not a safety component in accordance with the EU Machine Guidelines. Read the operating instructions before starting operation. Only trained professionals should perform connection, assembly and settings. Protect the device against moisture and contamination when operating. Observe suitable ESD protection measures during installation.

3.1.3 Connection of the supply lines The supply lines are connected to the terminal block in the plug cover. The DMT10-2/DML40-2 requires direct voltage from 18 to 30 VDC with typ. 6 watt power consumption.

3.1.5 Connection of the analogue output When using the analogue output, only Q1 remains to be used as distance-dependent switching output. In the case of invalid measuring results ("No echo"), Q2 has the function of an error output.

Note: DIP switch S1. 4 activates the signal RESET in the ON position. The signal RESET is deactivated in the OFF position. Set S1.4 to OFF (factory setting) to avoid unintentional reset.

4 Assembly and Alignment

4.1 Alignment Connect the DMT10-2/DML40-2 with the computer. Switch on the 24 V DC supply voltage. Switch on the laser pointer using the setup program (see chapter 5). The dot marked in red is positioned 30 mm (+/- 1 mm) above the actual measuring point.

Perpendicular measurements on reflective surfaces or shiny metals are to be avoided with sensors of the DMT10-2-2111 and DMT10-2-2211 series, as this can lead to spurious or invalid measurements (due to self-dazzling). When measurements are carried out at an angle to the reflective surface the measurement beam can be deflected and reflected from the objects into the surrounding area. This can influence the measurement results.

4.2 Outdoor installation

i Notes: When mounted outdoors, a housing must be used to protect the sensor from direct environmental effects. The device must be operated within the specified temperature range and protected against damp precipitation. See also Chapter 4.3.

4.3 Recommendations for front pane dimensions for a protective housing

i Notes: - Apply anti-reflective coating for 905 nm - Tilt front pane against axis of beam - The inside of the housing must not contain any reflective surfaces. - It is recommended to coat the inside of the housing with a non-gloss black varnish. - The beam reflected by the front pane must generally not hit well-reflecting objects in the

surroundings since this may create a "virtual" target hitting a surface at a distance that can no longer be suppressed

- Activate the nearfield suppression ( ref. 5.3.5 ).

5 Operation Startup The scope of delivery includes a CD containing the setup program for the configuration of the DMT10-2/DML40-2. You will need the following to use the setup program: A computer with an available RS232 interface Windows 98, Windows ME; 32 MB RAM, 64 MB RAM recommended Windows NT 4.0; 32 MB RAM, 64 MB RAM recommended Windows 2000 Pro; 64 MB RAM, 128 MB RAM recommended Windows XP or Windows XP Pro; 128 MB RAM, 256 MB RAM recommended Windows 7 Resolution 800 x 600 with 256 colors Users of Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP/XP Pro and Windows 7 must possess administrator rights to perform the installation.

i Note: Windows 98/XP contains the terminal program „HyperTerminal“, which can also be used to operate the DMT10-2/DML40-2. The pertaining description can be found in chapter 7.

5.1 Installation and Start of the Setup Program

1. Switch the DMT10-2/DML40-2 off. Connect the serial interfaces of the computer and DMT10-2/DML40-2 with the zero-modem cable, part no. 2014054.

2. Insert the CD supplied into the CD drive of your computer.

3. Start the program „DMT2_DML2_setup.exe“ on the CD and follow the instructions of the installation program. Start the program after the successful installation.

4. Select the serial RS 232 interface to which the

sensor is connected. Select the transfer rate of the DMT10-2/DML40-2 (Factory setup 9600 baud).

5. Now switch the DMT10-2/DML40-2 on. Wait until

the green LED at the sensor lights.

6. The measurement begins by pressing the "Start" button in the graphic window.

i Note: A change of the baud rate only becomes effective after switching the sensor off and on again. The setup program remembers the baud rate set last.

i Note: When setting an offset, switch to automatic axis adjustment or adapt the manual axis adjustment. Configuration changes only become effective after "Send configuration to DMT/DML" (temporary) has been executed. "Store setting permanently" must be executed for the non-volatile storage.

5.3 Serial interface

5.3.1 Output format

ASCII ASCII text can be displayed and read directly on the screen. One character is transmitted for each number. Each transmitted line ends with a carriage return (ASCII 13) and line feed (ASCII 10). ASCII + unit Apart from the ASCII text, the unit of measure can also be transmitted in this format. Binary The binary measuring values are output in 4 byte LONG INTEGER format. The distance information items are output as 32 bit binary; the LSB is thereby transmitted first. When using the data output in binary format, the "Request Mode" is the best method to control the data flow and to prevent data overflow into the connected PLC. Binary + CRC Each record is supplemented by a CRC 16 checksum (standard: ITU.T X25, Polynom 1021hex). 0xFFF is used as starting value. The CRC calculation must be performed through the complete value including CRC and must render 0.

5.3.2 Data output Continuous Mode Continual measurement with continuous data output. Single Mode Individual measurement. The command "M" starts the measurement. The measurement is stopped again following the output of the measuring value. Request Mode The request mode means that the sensor constantly measures internally thus providing current values but the output via the interface only takes place upon request. The request mode must be activated in the setup menu.

Initially, the internal measurement must be started using the command "M". Subsequently, individual measurement values can be invoked as needed, using the command "G" (Get measurement). The internal measurement is stopped using the command "S".

In addition, the sensor can also be set with the setup menu for "Autostart". After applying the supply voltage to the sensor, the internal measurement starts automatically; data output only takes place upon request using the command "G".

5.3.3 Correction values Offset/Scaling factor Setting the zero point and scaling factor. The zero point of the DMT10-2/DML40-2 is located on the front varnished housing surface. The zero point can be moved by entering an offset and the measured distance can be scaled by a scaling factor:

Rain filter Measurements can be affected by rain during outdoor operation. DMT10-2-2111 and DMT10-2-2211 sensors, that are equipped with electronic compensation, have a rain filter that can be switched on and which suppresses weak echos up to a distance of 15 m – thus largely cutting out any effect caused by rain. The capability of making measurements on dark targets in line with specifications is retained.

5.3.4 Ambient data Setting the ambient conditions. The travel time of the light depends on the air pressure and the temperature. Both factors may impact the distance measurement. A significant impact only occurs with extreme environmental conditions or distances in the kilometer range. We therefore recommend keeping the factory set values unchanged.

5.3.5 Filter

Moving average ON = Moving average OFF = Block by block evaluation of the measuring values A mean value formation serves to improve the measured value statistics since the individual measurements are subject to straggling. Block by block averaging is a summarization of a series of individual measurements divided by the number of the individual measurements. Subsequently, the individual measurements are determined for the next mean value block. The results of the previous measurements are rejected. The number of individual measurements entering the mean value formation is used to determine the quality of the statistics but also the output rate. A high quality signifies a low measuring rate. Block by block averaging is recommended for applications with rapidly changing distances. In case of the moving average value formation, the oldest value is replaced by a current measurement value. Each individual measurement thereby already produces results. This method is especially suitable for linear distance changes, e.g., as with crane positioning. Averaging depth Number of the measured values used to averaging an output value. A large number means a high quality of the statistics with a small scattering but low data output with block by block averaging, or a slurring of the measurement in case of the floating mean value formation depending on the repositioning speed.

Timeout The DMT10-2/DML40-2 performs an automatic evaluation of the reflected signal. If the signal is too strong or too weak and the automatic aperture has not yet positioned the incident signal into the work area, then the measuring result can be noisy and therefore inaccurate. The DMT10-2/DML40-2 will then report an invalid internal measurement. The TimeOut setting reflects a percentage to the setting of the averaging depth and renders the maximum number of invalid measurements. If this threshold is exceeded then the output will cause a "No echo" message. With some measuring situations, e.g., the flickering of the air between the sensor and the measuring target, increasing the time-out value can facilitate a measurement. With situations where monitoring of the measuring capability is important, a small time-out value can facilitate rapid reaction to an interruption of the measurement. Automatic echo evaluation In some borderline situations, e.g., in case of highly dynamic measurements, these measurement results are already desired if the automatic mechanical aperture has possibly not yet sufficiently vaporized to deliver a clean signal for accurate measurement. For these cases, the automatic echo evaluation can be deactivated for echo amplitudes that are too large. However, measurements that are too large can lead to accuracy variations and yet, because the aperture immediately regulates the value, the subsequent measurements are once more accurate. Small echo amplitudes continue to be monitored. Nearfield suppression Nearfield suppression facilitates the use of a front pane in a protective housing. Optical interference’s in the short range, which can already lead to faulty measurements because of even slight contaminations, are effectively suppressed. This increases the interval required for cleaning the pane. The Nearfield suppression changes the measuring behavior. The specified data are reached starting at a distance of 2.0 m. Without Nearfield suppression, the specified data are valid in the entire measuring area.

5.3.6 Analogue output configuration Distance @ 4 mA (min.) Lower threshold value of the desired measurement range in [mm]. Minimum distance between MIN and MAX: 1000 mm. Distance @ 20 mA (max.) Upper threshold value of the desired measurement range in [mm]. Minimum distance between MIN and MAX: 1000 mm. Note: The last valid measured value will be output in the event of invalid measured values (i.e. "no Echo"). The 2nd Switching output is used to indicate that the measured value is invalid in the event that the value is out of the scaled range or no measurement is possible with insufficient or excessive echo. It is recommended to monitor the switching output. In order to do so, an input must be assigned on the PLC or IPC.

5.3.7 Analogue output ON/OFF Remark: When the analogue interface is switched on, the switching output Q2 is used to output "No echo" if the defined measurement range is exceeded or fallen short of. Q2 can no longer be freely configured.

6 Profibus

6.1 Setting the slave address The initial configuration and the setting of the slave address are done via the RS 232 interface (see chapter "Configuration codes" or "Windows setup configuration ).

6.2 Input data format The input data include 8 bytes stored in the "Big Endian" format (increasing byte number designates decreasing byte valence).

The unit of the measurement result is mm for the distance measurement. Measurement results are 32 bit values with positive or negative signs. An invalid measurement is indicated by the value 7FFFFFFFh (largest positive value). A negative distance can occur with corresponding selection of user offset and scaling.

6.3 Input/output data format and command procedure DMT10-2/DML40-2 appears in a Profibus DP network as a device with 8 byte input data and 2 byte output data. The output data are used to transmit commands to the DMT10-2/DML40-2. Because the inputs and outputs of a device are read or written cyclically in Profibus DP operation, command bytes must be transmitted with a superimposed protocol. The cyclically transmitted output data should not be interpreted continuously as a retransmitted command. The command protocol is as follows: The master together with the counter byte transmits a command byte. The sensor stores the counter value as mirror (0 mirror value) of the current counter. The command is only processed if the counter value transmitted in the command equals the mirror value increased by one. Otherwise, it is ignored. The mirror value is sent back to the master in the input data. After the command has been carried out, the mirror value is updated in the input data. Now the mirror value equals the counter value. After the power-up of the DMT10-2/DML40-2, the mirror value equals 0. Because the input data are read cyclically, a Profibus DP master must check the mirror value contained in it to determine whether the last command given has been carried out. The command has been carried out if the mirror value equals the counter value. The command counter is a modulo counter, i.e., it applies to the command counter and its mirror value: The next counter value after reaching the highest level of 255 is 0.

The "d" to "l" commands only change the measurement configuration temporarily. All changes are lost after the device is switched off. Permanent configurations can be set via the RS 232 interface using VT100-compatible terminals or the setup software. Command "X" (only RS232 interface): The serial command “X” is used to immediately stop a measurement possibly in progress, regardless of the device type (Profibus/serial) and mode. 7 Program-controlled configuration with configuration codes Configuration codes are suitable for the configuration via PLC or an industrial PC whose programs shall configure the DMT10-2/DML40-2 automatically. You will need: A computer with an available RS 232 interface, the zero modem cable, part no. 2014054, and a terminal program.

8 Measurement configuration Autostart The measurement with the parameters stored last is started automatically after switching on the sensor. The difference between a mechanical aperture and electronic compensation The sensors of the DMT10-2-1X11 and DMT10-2-1X13 series are equipped with a mechanical aperture that automatically adjusts the light reflected from the measurement target to an optimum echo value. This ensures measurement accuracy – even with very different reflectivities, i.e. from very low levels of reflected light with dark targets up to a great deal of reflected light, e.g. with measurements from bright targets. The mechanical aperture operates with a maintenance-free motor. However, a concession to the high measurement accuracy over the wide range of differing reflectivities is an aperture adjustment time of up to one second when there is a large jump in reflectivity. The sensors of the DMT10-2-2111 and DMT10-2-2211 series operate by means of an electronic compensation without delay, i.e. the measurement values are fast available even with rapidly changing reflectivities. The disadvanatage of electronic compensation, however, is a limited measurement accuracy.

Temperature query The temperature (incl. status) can be queried using the command “T”. In Profibus devices, the temperature is output via the diagnosis buffer. This command is not permitted during a measurement. In the ASCII mode (output format of the measurement value), the output is always in integer format and with the appended unit of measure, degree Celsius ("C"). The temperature output is followed by the statement ",_OK" if the temperature lies in the valid range. Otherwise the statement "_NOK" is added. The complete output is formatted to 12 characters aligned at the right so that it is flush with the measurement value output (without unit of measure). In the binary mode, the output is also in integer format as 1 byte (with positive or negative signs) followed by a status byte (0=NOK, 1=OK). When the mode BINARY+CRC is activated, the two checksum bytes are attached in addition. Temperature switch-off The DMT10-2/DML40-2 sensor has a Temperature Switch-off Mode that is activated when the permissible internal device temperature is exceeded or undercut. This operating mode is signalled by the flashing red LED, unless the sensor is in Stand-by Mode. The DMT10-2/DML40-2 sensor also signals a diagnostic alarm to the master. The internal device temperature at moment of the actual exceeding or undercutting is transmitted in Byte 9 of the diagnostic buffer. Within the permissible working range of internal device temperatures of from -15° to +78°C the master can request the current distance data via “M” or “T” (distance and temperature data). On reaching an internal temperature of approx. 78°C the DMT10-2/DML40-2 sensor transmits a diagnostic alarm to the master. The current internal device temperature is available in the diagnostic buffer. Distance data can also be called up with “M” or “T” (incl. temperature data). On exceeding the internal temperature of approx. 81°C the sensor re-transmits a diagnostic alarm to the master. No distance measurements are possible in this state, the device exits Measurement Mode. The sensor regains measurement capability again on cooling of the device until the internal temperature is less than approx. 78°C. This is shown by the output of a status message without a set bit for external diagnosis. The “over-temperature” status is still shown in diagnostic byte 2. A status message is transmitted on cooling below an internal temperature of approx. 73°. The “overtemperature” status is cancelled in diagnostic byte 2. The following graph shows the relationship:

Similarly, the same behaviour occurs on an undercutting of the permissible internal temperature. Whereby the switching points are: Warning ~ -15°C Switch-off ~-18°C Cancellation of the warning ~-10°C. Start of measurement If a sensor is in the status temperature cut-off without having interrupted a measurement in progress, then a measurement can be started using the command “M”. The measurement is started in the host or Profibus mode but interrupted immediately as described in section "Continuous measurement". Continuous measurement If the status temperature cut-off is reached during a continuous measurement then a message is output and the measurement is interrupted. In ASCII mode, the message is "TempErr!_ _??" followed by the unit of measure values, if applicable, in binary mode, the value 0x7FFFFFF0 is output, supplemented by a CRC value, if applicable. Switched on marking laser When the marking laser is switched on and the status temperature cut-off is reached, the laser is switched off, regardless of the measuring status. Permitted commands in the temperature cut-off status When no continuous measurement was interrupted then all commands are permitted that would otherwise also be permitted outside of a measurement. Only the marking laser cannot be switched on. The command “P” is ignored. The command “M” to start a measurement is permitted with restrictions; see section "Starting a measurement". When a continuous measurement was interrupted then all commands are permitted that are permissible during a measurement. Only the marking laser cannot be switched on. The command “P” is ignored. The marking laser, in particular, can be switched off using the command “O” preventing the marking laser to be switched on again, when the valid operating temperature has been reached. The command “S” to finish a measurement is also permitted. The sensor then does not continue the measurement when the valid operating temperature has been reached. Reaching the valid operating temperature The status temperature cut-off can only be left by reaching a valid operating temperature. 9 Troubleshooting

9.1 Data output malfunctions RS 232 Malfunction Check No communication - Check the wiring of the zero modem cable

- Maximum cable length (RS 232: 15 m) exceeded? - Open the plug cover and check the setting of the DIP switches

Data error during transmission - Check the RS 232 settings on the DMT10-2/DML40-2 and on the PC or the PLC
