NARRATIVE

Our school’s mission statement is, “Our mission is to be a student-centered school that meets the academic, emotional, and social needs of all learners while preparing them to be productive citizens who enter college or the workforce with 21st Century skills.” This statement was created through a collaborative effort with the School Leadership Team and our entire staff and has been our mission for four years. One of our areas of growth that we are focused on this year is working to establish processes and activities for our entire

community (parents, students, and business leaders) to become more engaged in helping us realize our mission statement. We want to better engage our stakeholders in our school environment and build strong partnerships with our stakeholders in order to better prepare our students for post-secondary work or education.

Our community is a small, quaint community nestled in western Rockingham County; the McMichael student population comes from several small towns, Madison, Mayodan, and Stoneville, and the surrounding area of Rockingham County. Since many of the local textile mills have closed in recent years, options for employment are largely limited to the service sector. Business leaders work each day in a tough economic environment to continue to provide jobs and competitive wages. Our parents are from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. We have a small population of parents who are not economically disadvantaged. They are extremely involved in their children’s education and communicate on a regular basis with our guidance department and our teachers. Some parents are economically disadvantaged but understand and value education. They consistently work to help their children continue to be successful in school. These parents also work any job that is available and are often not home to help their children with school work. They struggle each day to ensure that their children have everything necessary to be successful. We also have parents who try to compensate for their lack of resources by making decisions that draw their children’s attention away from the value of education.

Dalton L. McMichael High School serves approximately 1000 students each day. Our student demographic is 87% white, 10% African American, and 3% Hispanic. In high school, it’s always tough to calculate the economically disadvantaged number of students, but I would estimate using the data from our feeder schools, that approximately 70% of our students are economically disadvantaged. The majority of our students use bus transportation (75%). We have 76 certified staff members and 25 classified staff. Approximately 95% of our staff is white, 5% is African American, and we have no Hispanic staff members.

Two main challenges facing our school are the loss of jobs in our county and our struggle to create an identity for McMichael High School. With our county’s unemployment rate at 11.2%, families have to make difficult choices between necessities and expenses that can be deferred or avoided. As a school, we have to be aware of this as it relates to the multitude of costs associated with school trips, programs, and even basic school supplies and food service. Many times, our students are left with responsibilities to take care of younger siblings because their parents work in nearby cities in Guilford County or Forsyth County. There are times when our students are expected to stay home and help their parents in the family business or with farm work. Based on economic factors, school may not always be the highest priority for families.

Because our student population draws from separate towns that are proud of their individual heritages, it is difficult to establish a sense of cohesion across the school population. Also, we are a young school and do not have a long history of loyal alumni with sentimental attachments to foster loyalty to our school. We need to engage the community as a whole to support the school and its programs as representational of the entire geographical area.

COMPREHENSIVE NEEDS ASSESSMENTThis section is a reflection of the data review process at your school. Please provide any tables and/or narrative to describe the data reviewed. Upon review of the data complete the data analysis sections. These two sections should lead to your SIP goals.

Our leadership team analyzes a variety of data in order to understand how we can measure achievement other than EOC scores. We are analyzing attendance data, tardy data, discipline data, and academic data. We are beginning to understand that this data must be collected and analyzed at least monthly. Our leadership team has approximately 30 members and those members consist of teachers, classified staff, parents, students, and community members.

Our staff is beginning to understand the importance of analyzing student work and creating common assessments; however, this is not something we have systematically embedded into our culture. We completed NCFALCON, North Carolina’s formative assessment modules, during the 2011-2012 school year and we will revisit many of those modules this year. Our entire staff is exploring different ways to not only assess students on a more consistent basis but also how to identify and analyze appropriate, meaningful, and rigorous student work. Currently, we provide professional development to our staff on a bi-weekly basis. Each department in our school meets on a bi-weekly basis to discuss their content and students that are in danger of failing. The principal meets with all our EOC teachers on a bi-weekly basis to discuss common assessments, data analysis, and planning for instruction. I believe we are on the right path to determining, school-wide, what rigorous qualities we will accept for high-quality student work and what multiple measures of student learning we will utilize in order to better identify student learning gaps and begin to close those gaps through differentiated instruction.

We send home progress reports to our parents every three weeks and our report cards go home every six weeks. Teachers are required to place a comment on the report card if a student makes a D or an F and teachers are required to call the parent at least twice before report cards go home if a student is failing their class. Our teachers were extremely involved with district personnel in creating the new common core pacing guides for all core content areas.

Our student support services offer our students a wide variety of support on a daily basis. Below is a comprehensive list of those services:

1. Student Health Services-School RN2. Student Health Center - Psych Counseling (1 day week) 3. Pregnancy Care Group 4. Hearing impaired support for high school students.5. Speech and Language Therapy6. Guidance Counseling Services

7. Teen Parent support group monthly8. College Advising Services: full time college advisor who works with our Guidance Department. 9. Psychologist on staff for testing services10.Comprehensive Exceptional Children’s Services11.ESL Educational Services12.Upward Bound: community partnership service13.School Resource Officer: full-time SRO who works with our students 14.Full-time Drop Out Prevention (DOP) Coordinator15.Full-time Instructional Technology Specialist16.Math Help Lab after school weekly17.English Learning Lab after school weekly18.Social Studies Learning Lab after school weekly19.CTE after school Computer Lab weekly20.Backpack Program-food for children over the weekend.21.Peer Mediation/Teen Court

While this is a comprehensive list of services that we provide our students, our staff recognizes that we must make time in the instructional period and in the instructional day to provide more academic support for our students. We are currently exploring different scheduling options that might help us offer this for our students; we are also learning more about differentiation of instruction and how to begin to identify learning gaps during instruction and then modify our instruction, for struggling learners and high learners, so we can better serve all our students and their academic needs not only within the instructional day but also within the instructional period. Ensuring community and parent engagement is a challenge that our staff is focused on addressing. We are beginning to put processes in place that include more parent night opportunities to showcase student work, learn about the Common Core, understand the ACT and the PLAN, and better understand the registration process.

Final Update June 28, 2013:What strategies have been successful? What data have collected? What strategies will need modification for the upcoming school year?

Our CASA meetings were extremely successful and we feel that is represented in EOC data we have already gotten back. We hope when the leveled scores come back in the Fall that we will see more improvement in growth and proficiency. Teacher input was gathered informally and all teachers agree that the CASA process is beneficial to them as professionals.

The peer coaching model between our English department and Social Studies department was also successful. Data collected from ERG indicates that our social studies teachers experienced extreme growth with implementing literacy strategies and writing into their content. Our English teachers also became peer coaches and leaders. By observing and coaching other teachers, our English teachers were able to adjust their pedagogical approach also to better meet the needs of our students.

Our Science department saw some growth with implementing writing and literacy in their classrooms through the EXC-ELL process and our math teachers also experienced some growth. However, we still

need more targeted professional development with both of these departments with regard to writing and literacy in the content area.

Initial results/data are still slim for us. We haven’t received any data on our ACT scores nor will we received leveled scores for EOCs until the fall. Initial scores on MSLs were positive; however, we still need to analyze the overall numbers for MSLs.

Final Update June 28, 2013:What strategies have been successful? What data have collected? What strategies will need modification for the upcoming school year?

Our guidance department worked closely with our college advisor and our GEAR UP coordinator to ensure our students were meeting the necessary requirements for course credit.

Our staff planned a DMHS parent night at the local recreation department. We had all teachers there from each department and our guidance department planned booths with information on the PLAN, ACT, EOCs, and FAFSA information. We also had a technology booth for parents to peruse information about internet safety and information about the Google Chromebooks. This parent night wasn’t as successful as we would have liked; however, we plan to offer at least two of these sessions moving forward each year. We would like to reach out to our parents earlier rather than later.

We feel that we can do more with the College Advisor position and are looking forward to hiring a new college advisor.

We also feel that more can be done with GEAR UP with regard to better preparing our seniors for college and helping those students who aren’t sure they can go to college. We want our College Advisor and our GEAR UP Coordinator to work more closely together.

As of right now, our graduation rate for the 4 year co-hort did increase; however, we need to do more to reach potential drop-outs earlier.

We did have students on our leadership team and we will continue to have students participate in the leadership of the school in the 2013-2014 school year. The feedback from our student council was extremely positive and the students on the leadership team indicated verbally to the principal that they enjoyed the experience and being able to see how our school operates and is led.

We developed and deployed a parent survey and student survey. We plan to analyze that data in August and make any necessary changes for the 2013-2014 SIP and school year.

We designed and developed a new overall process for having clubs at our school. We plan to implement this new process in the 2013-2014 school year.

School-Based Management and Accountability ProgramSummary of School-Based Waiver Requests for 2012-2013

LEA: Rockingham County Schools School: DMHS School Code: 790

Request for WaiverTitle of Waiver 1. Describe the waivers you are requesting.

To accommodate the reduction in faculty due to budget cuts at the Local and State levels, we are requesting an exemption on class sizes in grades 4-12.

2. Identify the law, regulation, or policy from which an exemption is requested.

115C-301.1- Allocation of teachers; class size

3. State how the waiver will be used. Due to reductions in Local and State Budget Allotments we would be unable to

offer students required courses in all areas needed for graduation without the class size waiver. This will also allow us to include students in higher level classes when only singletons can be offered.

4. State how the waiver will promote achievement of performance goals. Waiver of class size maximums will allow more effective scheduling where

students are working on similar curriculum goals and objectives. Students can be more readily assigned to appropriate grades and classes.
