In order to open up the area and give it a new look, the wood-cladded planter within the Al Sahab 1 lobby was removed and the furniture was rearranged. This simple improvement that has made a big impact is another great suggestion from the Interim Board.

abTrap that dirt Maintaining a clean, hygienic environment in our communities is a regular, day-to-day activity. So in order to help upkeep the cleanliness of the building hallway, new entrance mats were installed at the parking entrances of all floors. This small addition will help reduce the dirt tracked into building on the soles of people’s shoes.

Ready for emergencyTo ensure emergency preparedness in the community, essential equipment has been installed at easily accessible locations. The emergency equipment includes: • Evacuation chairs • First-aid kits • Eye-wash kits

In addition, fire drills are conducted twice a year to educate residents about emergency evacuation routes and assembly points and to also confirm that all systems work together efficiently. The first fire drill for this year was successfully conducted in May 2015.

Ramadan Kareem! We would like to wish you and your family peace and happiness during the Holy Month.

As with every year, there are a variety of events lined up to observe and celebrate the spirit of Ramadan:

• Charity drive: Thanks to your generosity in 2014, 14,270 kilograms of donated clothing was collected.• Football tournament: The indoor football tournament at Sports Zone, Fitness First offers participants a chance to win trophies and exciting prizes.• Iftar at mosques: Iftar is served at 10 mosques across our communities, all through Ramadan.• Iftar for labourers: Workers at labour camps are served Iftar every day, for the entire month.

We look forward to sharing this special month with you.

Stay cool & save cashThe days are getting hotter and the temperature is climbing

steadily. But you can stay cool all summer long and save

money with a few simple tips for your home.

Set your thermostat

• Ensure your air-conditioning equipment runs on low speed

as and when required – the optimum set point is 23 – 25°C.

• If you are away during summer, set your thermostat

temperature to 28°C to avoid using excessive amounts of

electricity.

Maintain your air-conditioning system

• Arrange for regular maintenance of your air-conditioning

system to ensure it is working properly. Take special care

to have the inlet air filters cleaned and if you notice a

problem, contact a professional maintenance company to

check your system immediately.

• Filters can become blocked with use, inhibiting air flow through the unit and reducing cooling performance. Blocked filters also

cause a build-up of dust and result in damage to the unit fan motor. To avoid this, we recommend that they are cleaned at least once

every three months.

• Have the regulating valve checked for ‘OPEN’, ‘CLOSE’ functionality on a quarterly basis. If a valve is stuck in ‘OPEN’ position, this will

lead to continuous cooling and in a ‘CLOSED’ position, it will lead to lack of cooling. This applies to chilled water fan coil units only.

Summer is here and for many of us that means it’s time for a holiday. Here are few simple things you can do to keep your home safe, so you concentrate on enjoying yourself, rather than worrying about your property.

Start with your doorstep: Nothing is more of a giveaway than old newspapers piled outside your door. So put your subscription on hold for the duration of your holiday. You could also ask a neighbour to remove anything else that gets dropped on your doorstep.

Keep your lights on: Consider keeping a light on, preferably LED, so it appears someone’s at home. But if you’re going to do this, make sure you shut the blinds so you’re not obviously lighting up an empty house!

Home security: Ensure all the doors and windows of your house are closed and locked. Look out for areas that have weak points. Inform one of your relatives or someone you trust to periodically check your house while you are away. You could also consider investing in a burglar alarm system.

Don’t spread the word: Limit how many people know you’re leaving. You’ll probably need to set up an ‘Out of Office’ message on your work email, but avoid doing the same on personal emails or voicemail. Be careful of informing everyone on social media about your holiday plans. You never know who is reading your post.

Invest in a safe: Avoid leaving any valuable materials, important documents, money or jewellery in your wardrobe without locking it securely. Use a bank deposit vault or a safe to store any valuables that you’re not taking with you. You can buy a safe at most hardware stores.

Check your vehicles: Avoid leaving the keys of your car or any other vehicle in obvious places while you are on holiday. Remove any valuables stored in your vehicles. For added safety, you could also consider disconnecting the battery.

Switch off appliances: Make sure you switch off any appliances you don’t need. Appliances left on standby use electricity all the time, which can add up to a significant amount if you’re going away for several weeks. Turning them off is not only better for the environment but will also eliminate the chance of anything catching fire.

Turn off your taps: Check all water outlets for visible leaks. This includes taps, water heaters and bathroom hand sprays. Turn off the main water valve inside/outside your unit. Remember to also switch off your hot water system when you turn off your main watersupply.

Get Contents Insurance: In case of theft, fire or anything unexpected that happens while you’re away, Contents Insurance will cover the contents of your unit such as furniture, electrical appliances, curtains, carpets and paint finishes on walls and ceilings.

Avail Dubai Police assistance: Subscribe to the Home Safety Program by Dubai Police so you can be contacted in case there is a problem while you are away.
