Brrrrrrr! Just as our grandmothers’ predicted, the large crop of berries that have festooned our bushes this autumn have led to what is sure to be a harsh winter. The preceeding milder months may well have spoiled us but as we throw another dog on the bed to keep us warm you can’t help but wish for sunnier climes. Whilst we all enjoy a walk in the crisp, fresh air, the realities of winter such as scraping the car of ice and heating bills that would make an oligarch wince are all things we could do without..

So thank heavens for this issue of dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND where we are determinedly pushing the practicalities of the colder climate to the back of our minds, and focusing on all things festive, all things fun and all things fabulous about winter.

Firstly we catch up with actress Denise Welch and her artist Lincoln Townley at the launch of his new exhibition at Lutterworth’s Antidote Art, an establishment fast gaining a reputation for showing innovative and exciting new work. Denise and Lincoln spoke to us incredibly openly about dealing with addiction, living life under the scrutiny of the media and how they are both moving forward with their careers. You’ll find that on page 16.

We’re a gregarious lot here at the magazine HQ so we’ve loved looking at what the best dressed partygoers will be wearing this season as well as finding out a few tips on how to go from desk to disco with ease from those experts in the know- see our style section starting on page 18 It’s not all about self-indulgent shopping though, as we’re always in the mood to give and to receive. Our wonderful gift guides for him, (p28) for her (p22) and the little ones (p32) are full of inspiration for your nearest and dearest so start making your lists for them and for you!

After all those festive excesses we’ve got a healthy tip or two to make sure you detox in style and avoid the January blues in our New Year, New You feature starting on page 44 Meanwhile, for those of us who find the best way to deal with snow and sleet is to leave it behind, we visit Langkawi in Malaysia for a spot of unwinding and relaxation in the sun, see our full hard hitting report on page 40!

This issue is also crammed full of competitions to brighten up the darkest of days and our full dairy and culture section are sure to fill those long nights with something worthwhile and interesting.

So fling off your thermals, crank up the heating and enjoy this new edition of dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND. We’ll see you in 2015- when it had better be warmer!

Putting the Fun intO Fine art.

Find Antidote Fine Art at 31 High Street, Lutterworth, Leicestershire, LE17 4AY Tel. 01455 556951.

Search Antidote on Facebook, @AntidoteArt on Twitter, email [email protected] or visit www.antidoteart.com.

Imagine a contemporary art exhibition and what comes to mind? White walls covered sparingly in pictures, being viewed by the black-turtle-necked bespectacled elite in hushed intellectual tones? Well, it’s a far cry from Antidote Art, Lutterworth’s own fine art gallery, where colourful prints and originals cover the bright walls.

The owners, Sara Lovatt and Rich Atkiss, are always on hand, glass of wine at the ready “Someone asked us what we did the other day because every time they drove past, crowds of people are drinking wine!” It is this sort of relaxed atmosphere that Rich and Sara have been keen to foster as they believe that everyone has the right to see and own beautiful art. Sara explains “Antidote is a welcoming place – we want everyone to be able to feel comfortable to pop in, have a look at what’s on display, have a coffee and a chat and perhaps even learn something about art.” Sara and Rich are passionate about making art feel accessible to a larger audience. Started eighteen months ago, the concept of Antidote Art was to open a regional gallery that people could feel relaxed in. Rich says “Traditionally, buying art involved a trip to London or Birmingham, where you felt pressured to make a snap decision before embarking on the lengthy journey home. We wanted Antidote to be local, relaxed and more informal – we never pressurise people into buying, we’re happy for people to just come and look.”

And their approach seems to be working. Antidote is now attracting contemporary artists outside of the mainstream art publishing houses.

Recently the gallery began representing Lincoln Townley, the enfant terrible of the literary and art world (see centre pages of Dluxe for an interview with Lincoln and wife Denise Welch) who has graduated

from tabloid bad boy to serious artist. Sara says “It is amazing to have an artist like Lincoln on our books, he’s exciting and challenging – a fantastic talking point.”But you don’t have to be a fan of the more avant garde contemporary art, Antidote exhibits everything from Impressionism to the new ‘Low Brow’ movement to come out of the US. “There really is something for every taste and pocket. From prints for a couple of hundred pounds to originals for many thousands and we can offer generous finance packages as well. Our philosophy is that we want everyone to be able to own amazing art, and if there is a way we can help, we will.”

Sara & Rich would like to extend an open invitation to Dluxe readers to

join their mailing list, chat with them on Facebook and Twitter or visit the website. “We will keep you up-to-date with the latest events, exhibitions and news. We would welcome anyone to get in touch and pop down for a chat and a viewing – completely no obligation.”

Clarendon Park’s top hair salon, Emma Brown Hair, is starting 2015 with a bang, by opening a major salon extension. Emma Brown Hair, which has beaten all of its business targets, has now had to expand into the upstairs of its Clarendon Park Road salon, adding another five stations to the existing three. Opening in January 2015, the extension will more than double the capacity of the salon, which has been operating with a full order book and a four-week waiting list for Saturday appointments for the last eight months.

In order to staff the new stations, Emma has been joined in the business by her fiancé Dennis Carrick. Dennis left his retail career and is now qualified as a stylist and will assist Emma with the business. She is recruiting for additional stylists to join the team – contact Emma at the salon for more information. Dennis said “It has been great to retrain in my 30s – you have a passion and attention to detail that grows as you mature. You also know how to deal with different sorts of people, and we get everything from children to professionals to fashionistas at our salon.”

Emma has been recognised for her hard work with a Highly Commended award in the Entrepreneurial category of the LABA Women’s Awards. Emma beat a dozen high quality nominees to be recognised for her entrepreneurial spirit. She received her certificate from Nicky Morgan MP, Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities.

Emma said “It’s such an exciting time right now. Not only are we expanding in January but we have plans to work with national charity Edgar’s Gift in Spring as well. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported us – as a thank you, we’re giving our customers a £10 off voucher for January as everyone needs a treat after Christmas!”

Denise Welch and Lincoln Townley are a very public couple. Their relationship has been the subject of tabloid titillation, gossip, rumour and scandalous speculation whilst behind closed doors they have fought their demons together to emerge focused and united.

dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND speak exclusively to the showbiz couple about how hard it is to succeed when the world wants you to fail.

“The problem is, and they told me this, your misery sells more papers, Denise.” It’s an incredibly sad thing to hear from someone as bright and high spirited as Denise Welch is today. We’re talking ahead of her artist

husband (and toy-boy) Lincoln Townley’s launch party at Antidote Art in Lutterworth, a gallery only too keen to display the work of the enfant terrible of Soho. His work continues to take inspiration from the dark and destructive period in which he and Denise first met - and this exhibition is an exclusive to Antidote Art outside of the Capital.

“Of course we met in Soho,” says Lincoln, who’s sat in a black sequinned jacket with wife Denise in matching sequins an hour before the show’s VIP opening. “It was around about 6 in the morning, so you can imagine what we were like back then...(he pauses)...Denise explains it very well, actually,” he defers graciously. “Yes, it was

6 o’ clock in the morning, apparently...” she says in her trademark North Eastern accent, which is still strong despite home being a combination of London and Manchester for many years. “I’d been deserted by my friends; they couldn’t find me. I was somewhere, I don’t know where, and in our minds Lincoln and I thought that our eyes caught each other across a crowded room and we gravitated towards each other. But our friend Meryl, who actually introduced us, said that we were the only two left in the club together…”

Denise makes it clear that this was no affair, “My then husband and I had already separated, but we just hadn’t chosen to go public about it at the time.” The intensity of the media at this time was exacerbated

dluxe

spotlight

Page 17: Dluxe Leicestershire & Rutland Winter '14

by Denise’s appearance and success on Celebrity Big Brother, which she went on to win. “That was a hollow victory to me. I don’t regret it because it was a catalyst for me turning things around. There was a lot of thinking time in there and I just thought, okay, things have got to change. That’s when we realised we were in love with each other and that it wasn’t going to work with alcohol and things.”

“We were down such a dark path that we knew we wouldn’t survive, not just talking about the state of our lives, but we knew we wouldn’t survive the relationship if we kept on drinking,” adds Lincoln. “We were both in bad places and we were both ready to stop,” states Denise simply. “It had all descended

into the darkness and, I think, for me, there’s no box unticked of things I haven’t done. I think we anchored each other, and we’re now, well, Lincoln’s nearly two years sober and I’m two and a half.”

These dark days however are about to envelope us all as the inaugural show at Antidote Art is inspired by his times in Soho as a functioning alcoholic and the ‘go to’ man for everything, connecting city bankers with every form of sin. By his own admission, Soho made him want to drink more, snort more, fight more and f*ck more and he has detailed his addiction in a compelling book called ‘The Hunger’.

“It is a shocking book,” says Denise, “but I don’t think I was shocked by it although some of it was hard to read. It just makes me incredibly proud of who he is today.”

“A lot of the art is inspired from that dark period ‘The Hunger’ is set in,” states Lincoln. “I’ve always painted; it was my Grandfather, in fact, who taught me how to paint, but the works are definitely visuals of that time although it is evolving; now there’s much more about the better sides of life rather than looking through the eyes of an addict.”

Within the show is a fascinating collection called ‘Banker’, which is a series of distorted portraits of the super-rich bankers blowing bonuses on excess after excess. “You would have these guys coming to the club and consuming and wanting more and more. It was all about consumption. You’d get more girls looking at you if you spent more money on bigger bottles of champagne, it was all about being seen. We would offer ‘celebration packs’ which were like £15k and would be four bottles of champagne and a private dancer. I remember there was this one guy with the private dancers - bearing in mind you’re not allowed to touch the girls - in a private booth and his bill at the end of the night was £75,000 and he didn’t flinch.” It is little wonder then that Lincoln found inspiration from such scenarios.

Moving forward Lincoln’s work is much more focused on the positives of life: his sobriety and marriage to Denise being part of that. “We couldn’t be happier, we’ve never regretted getting sober for a day, don’t miss it…” says Denise before Lincoln adds “I was a bad alcoholic and it got to that point where I thought we’ve got something here, in this relationship, it’s something worth giving it up for.”

Along their path to sobriety both Denise and Lincoln decided it best to step out of the public eye; “I had to pull my head down from the parapet. I was really scarred by a couple of magazines, so am very careful now when we talk and who we talk to,” admits Denise.

We are honoured today, as she takes us further into her confidence and talks of her new acting projects, getting back to the kind of work she loves including a new high profile series called ‘Boy meets Girl’ for the BBC; a comedy about transition featuring a transgender lead. She continues, “At the moment we’re both so focused on work we go out as rarely as possible. “We’ll always leave by the time

everyone starts to jump on the table and stuff if we do,“ laughs Lincoln. “That’s the great thing about being sober together, is that, when everyone starts getting pissed, we leave.” “And normally, no one even notices” laughs Denise.

WILKINSON GOLDSMITHS LAUNCH FINE JEWELLERY

STORE

It’s been a substantial amount of time since a fine jewellers has made its home in Stoneygate. Many may remember JR Moates on Allandale Road and it is that establishment which inspired Stephen Wilkinson to open his first fine jewellery shop on the celebrated street, eponymously named Wilkinson Goldsmiths. “It seems all roads lead back to Stoneygate for me,” says Steve.

Stephen Wilkinson’s foray into fine jewellery began at 16 with an apprenticeship that was brought to an abrupt end when his Boss was killed in a motorcycle accident. It was during this time that he first came into contact with Ros at JR Moates, handling their repair work. Steve finished off his formal apprenticeship and training with Cathy Stephens, which gave him an insight into the art of jewellery making, as opposed to just skilled repairs, and a foundation for which he has built his entire career since. “It was a great experience and really helped to broaden my skillset before I went self-employed,” he adds.

Steve started out at the city’s LCB depot, a hub for creative businesses in the city. “Being surrounded by likeminded, creative people with a love for design was really inspiring,” says Steve who used this time to let his imagination run free. “I seemed to be constantly sketching and this led me

to specialise in handcrafted designs alongside my restoration and reinterpretation work.” Really, it was Ros - who I’d kept in touch with - that gave me the belief and confidence in my designs. And it’s in no small part down to her that I’ve chosen Stoneygate for my first shop”.

Fast forward and this winter sees the official opening of Wilkinson Goldsmiths - a high-end shop-come-workshop - on Allandale Road, Stoneygate. Here, on site, Steve offers a one-stop shop for high-quality repair work, jewellery matching and, of course, bespoke jewellery for him and for her. That you can see the work being repaired or commissioned on the premises is enormously important when dealing with items so precious. Wilkinson Goldsmiths will also stock a range of limited-edition brands, such as Manja, with items from just £30 making Wilkinson Goldsmith the place to find the perfect treat on any occasion.

Wilkinson Goldsmith is @ 4 Allandale Road, Stoneygate, Leicester, LE2 2DA. Tel 0116 270 5375.

fragrancesGuarantee a queue under the mistletoe with the most stylish signature scents. dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND select some of this season’s favourite scents.

If last year’s Christmas jumper didn’t survive the spring closet cull then it’s time to invest in a little bit of irony. The key this year is embellishment.

This scent is exactly what you’d expect from such a cult fashion brand – modern and manly! Opening with the aromatic freshness of santolina and vibrant resin, there are distinctive notes of opoponax myrrh and amber.

Yet another gem from Tom Ford, this fragrance has been created with two deeply iconic Arabian ingredients: flowery rose contrasted with oud, the most prized wood in perfumery. It’s noble, luxurious and distinctive ... exactly what a signature scent should be.

Tom Ford Oud Fleur EDP, £215

Valentino Uomo EDT, £46

As with its predecessors, 01 and 02, Molecule 03 is an homage to the single scent ingredient, or aroma-chemical. Celebrated perfumer Geza Schoen takes niche fragrance line back to its roots with an androgynous masterpiece.

Aromatic and smooth, the notes are bergamot and myrtle; roasted coffee beans, chocolate and hazelnut; and leather and cedar. The result is a super sophisticated scent.

Fostering and adoption Centre now on FaCebook

F A M I L YLeicester City Council’s Fostering and Adoption Centre has launched new Facebook pages for anyone who wants to find out more about becoming a new family for local children.

Christmas and New Year is a busy time of year for foster carers and new adopters as they help children to settle in and feel part of their families. It is also a busy time for staff at the Fostering and Adoption Centre on Friar Lane, Leicester as a greater number of people than usual consider becoming new families at this time of year. The team has to remind applicants that fostering and adoption require real commitment over a long period.

A spokesperson from the centre says: “Lots of people come along to our events or contact us by phone and decide that right now isn’t the right time for them to foster or adopt. We felt that Facebook would be a good way to stay in touch with them whilst they plan for the future. It’s also a good place for everyone to find out what fostering and adoption is really like and decide for themselves if they want to take it further.

“Very soon I expect these pages to be the best information resource on fostering and adoption in the region. It’s early days – we only launched

the pages a few weeks ago, but we are hoping to get a good community of interested people contacting us. For the future we plan to host Q&A sessions where you can get live answers to your questions from experts. By experts I mean experienced foster carers and adopters as well as our staff.”

To find out more about fostering and adoption opportunities in your area please visit: www.facebook.com/adoption.serviceseastmidlands or www.facebook.com/leicesterfostering

stoMp CeLebrates a Year oF sUCCessShoe buying strops and trainer tantrums can turn shopping for children’s shoes into a parent’s worst nightmare. Then along comes Stomp in Narborough – a specialist children’s shoe shop offering a full measure and fitting service in a child friendly environment. “ We have nine children between us so completely understand what it is like to go shoe shopping with children and the drama that it can sometimes bring” says Debbie, who owns and runs the shop with Lucy and Rebecca.

“ Everyone has been so positive about Stomp, Mums, Dads and grandparents love the choice and the quality of the shoes available, as for the children, the toys and TV can often make it difficult to leave!”

The first year in business has been a great success with parents loving the unique and unusual range of quality footwear available from brands such as Bobux, Kickers and Ricosta.

LILIPAD - THE ULTIMATE GADGET GIFT Lutterworth-based family business Sealey’s has diversified by bringing out Lilipad – an originally designed stylish stand for iPad, mobile phone and other devices. Sealey’s, which is known for providing bespoke high quality designer furniture for top end clients, has bounced back from a devastating fire at their 17th century coach house workshop in Lutterworth, to use its cutting edge design and craftsmanship to launch Lilipad.

Having patented their design, Sealey’s has launched Lilipad via its own website this November. Lightweight, stable and hardwearing, the Lilipad allows iPads, tablets, mobile phones and other devices to stand upright without support enabling handsfree use and an easy angle to read at. Manufactured by hand at the Sealey studios, the Lilipad is constructed of layered laminate, and coated with dyed wood, producing nine vibrant hues from which to choose from. In addition, Special Edition finishes include premium wood such as Sequoia, Masur Brich and Amercian Walnut, provide classic finishes that would grace any boardroom, home or office. There will also be seasonal variations in colour and finish.

Priced at £59.50 for the standard or £69.50 for the special edition, the Lilipad is promising to be the stand-out original gift of the season. Keith Sealey, Managing Director at Sealeys, said “This is a real departure for us – the Lilipad started as a design project for our Young Designer Makers, and now is a fully-formed product with its own brand. From where we were three years ago after the devastating fire at our workshop, to launching this new brand and website, it’s been a real journey for us.”

To order a Lilipad, visit Sealey Furniture, 33 High Street, Lutterworth, LE17 4AY. Tel: 01455 556403. or order online at www.sealeyfurniture.co.uk

PROPERTY WATCH by Hunters Estate Agents, Stoneygate, Leicester.

ONLINE ESTATE AGENTSA topic which is being increasingly talked about is the rise of online estate agents and what this means for the traditional high street agent.

Online agents offer an estate agent service solely on the internet with their main motivating factor being a reduction in fees compared to the traditional high street agent. A poll from EstatesDirect.com found that 4 in 10 Brits believe they could sell their property better than an estate agent, due to their own knowledge of their area and property.

The traditional high street agent continues to grow however as the two most visited sites for buying, selling, letting and renting and finding an estate agent, Rightmove and Zoopla ,will only list registered estate agents on their property portal. Rightmove in September alone had 1.28 billion page views proving why it is the number one property portal. Most people that search online will look at Rightmove and Zoopla first before looking at another portal meaning that the traditional estate agent gets looked at before anything else.

Ian Moore, Sales Director of Hunters Estate Agent, comments on why he believes a traditional agent is still the most favourable choice:

“Let’s be clear on one thing here, property portals do not sell properties and certainly do not get the best prices for them, good estate agents do. Property portals are one of many tools a good estate agent uses to get potential buyers who are not already registered with them, and enables them to call and enquire about a property they have for sale.

The good, knowledgeable, well trained agent asks the buyer questions to understand all their property, social and life style needs. They then match those needs with the properties they already have listed and will encourage the buyer to view the property. They then accompany the buyer around the property constantly listening to their needs and extoling the virtues of the property and the area to the buyer with enthusiasm and professional knowledge. In order to secure an offer and achieving the best price for their client, this process is essential”.

So when it comes to buying, selling, letting and renting, choose an established agent with proven track record and expert local and market knowledge. Call Hunters in Stoneygate today to see why they are the best choice to sell your most valuable asset.

IT’S VINTAGE DAHLING!

Oates & Co are the new girls in town and they are making some big friends already with their range of beautiful, simple, unique homeware, designer gifts from across the globe and unusual vintage products they’ve sourced themselves - some from local designer/makers.

Created with passion by local entrepreneurs, Jane Oates and Sylvia Manser, the online emporium is a treasure trove of home-loveliness featuring many items and brands not on the high street.

We push the duo to name one of their favourite finds: the Norm Architects designed salt and pepper bottle grinders feature highly as “they are simple, very clean and work beautifully with a ceramic grinder, which seems to be infinitely adjustable. WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

We’re already starting to feel a little under pressure to meet all of our work and family commitments this coming season. This set us wondering just how far we would go to enjoy all of those special events with our loved ones? Why not take our quiz to find out just what you would do...

... to be with your family this festive season?

FRANTIC FESTIVITIES QUIZ1. Rushing from the office to a rare romantic soiree with your partner, the traffic lights turn from green to amber as you approach. Do you:

a) Reduce speed steadily and stop- you'd rather get there late than not at all.

b) Keep going, you might just make it, then brake hard at the last minutewhen the lights turn red.

c) Risk running the lights- you've had to cancel so many dates recently, you're not going to be late for this one.

2. You promised your mum that you'd make this year's family gettogether but your meeting overran and you're still miles away. Do you:

a) Relax, at least this year you'll be there before the main course.

b) Text mum en route to assure her you'll be there, just a little bit late.

c) Put your foot down- you don't want a repeat of last year's frosty reception.

3. After a frantic car journey you arrive just In time for the start of theschool nativity play. You're offered mulled wine and a mince pie. Do you:

a) Take the pie (after all, you hardly had any lunch) but decline the alcohol.

b) Take both, you're starving and could do with a drink, which probablyisn't that alcoholic anyway.

c) Take the wine but not the pie- you had canapes with champagneearlier and you still need to fit into your party frock.

Of course it would be better if we could all answer a all of the time. But in reality, how many of us recognise occasions when we might have chosen b or c?

love langkawi

After a run of international headlines recently, I was reticent about visiting Malaysia, but after just six days, it’s not only opened my mind and my eyes, but changed the way I will holiday forever...writes dluxe LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND’S Kevin Urquhart.

The minute you step out of Langkawi airport, you are hit by the humidity. Any thoughts of the cold weather back in Blighty are forgotten as our 15-minute transfer takes us past paddy fields with the obligatory grazing water buffalo and houses on stilts. It might sound naive, but I’m quickly struck that I’m somewhere very different; very foreign. A hot and steamy jungle Paradise, if you will, that is made up of 99 islands at high tide, or 105 at low tide. Langkawi - translated locally as Eagle Rock - is almost half Mangrove (tropical rainforest by the sea) and it’s widely believed that it was this island collection and Mangrove swamps that saved the island from the tsunami, when it hit at low tide.

This six day, two centre holiday begins at the Meritus Pelangi on Cenang Beach, which is spectacular. The 35-acre beach resort and spa sits amidst a lush tropical, beachfront location. 352 guestrooms and suites are housed in clusters of single and double-storey wooden chalets built on stilts. Each boast spacious verandas overlooking stunning views of the ocean (like mine) or the surrounding landscaped gardens and pools. Although a huge resort, it feels intimate.

Step outside of the air-conditioned hotel resort and you’re transported to a different world of sounds, smells and, of course, the humidity, which can hit 90%. Authentic roti chani stalls (a local delicacy a bit like a very light naan with fried egg centre) is yours for around 450ringgt (roughly 90p) and rub shoulders with Starbucks, which is very much at Westernised prices so considered a luxury treat. It’s this melange and juxtaposition of clashing cultures that makes Malaysia so beguiling - and nowhere more so than the weekly Night Market in Kuah, which is a short taxi ride from the hotel. Here, hundreds of stalls sell the finest street food in to the depths of the night that has the locals out in force - always a good sign. And so cheap.

But many guests of the Meritus Pelangi never leave the resort and it’s not difficult to understand why. What strikes me is the quietness of the resort; aside from the occasional jet ski or landing aircraft - it’s becoming more renowned - the only sound is the gentle lapping of the ocean as it caresses the white blonde sands. It makes for the most incredible backdrop to my seaside jog.

After a morning idly swimming and snoozing on the beach, it’s time for our al fresco cookery demonstration, which I still manage to be late for. I’m never late, so must be adopting a Malaysian mindset. The spice route is the reason behind the fusion of spices that ended in

Malaysia. Under the watchful eye of the Executive Chef, we prepare the meat and spices, herbs and natural flavourings such as Galangal (ginger variety), candle nuts and lemongrass. It was the most flavoursome, deeply spiced dish I’ve ever had the chance to eat - and I’m rubbish at cooking. Will food ever be this good again?

As you get older and (hopefully) wiser, tastes change and the idea of multi-site travelling must be done in style, if it is to be entertained at all. Thankfully, our second hotel of the trip is the world-renowned, The Danna. It represents old school, 5-star, colonial splendour appealing to the international jet-set, as well as being a favourite of many visiting Royals and celebrities. The Danna is well located to take advantage of some fantastic local attractions. A must-visit is the Langkawi Cable Car, which we head straight for, as the weather can (and has) been changeable - September is part of their low season, albeit that temperatures never fall below 25-degrees. It’s said that on a clear day, you can see Thailand as well as a stunning 360-degree panoramic of Langkawi from the 708meter viewing platform. Sadly, cloud stopped play, so viewing is restricted at the very top, but it is no less of an experience.

Whether it’s the altitude or the unwinding of the previous three days, but we decide it’s high time we had some cocktails pre-dinner. Thankfully, their Planters restaurant is seductively lit, so we pretend not to see each other slur. The food at this a la carte restaurant is incredible, but the portions are sized (we are later told) for the American and German markets where more is more, so either take elasticated pants, willpower, Rennies or all three. Also highly recommended - both by me and Trip Advisor - is the neighbouring, Privelege restaurant, at the Marina next door. Their tasting menu is sublime.

After a night of excess, I make up for it with (slightly hungover) pre-breakfast yoga on the beach. Taken under the shade of the trees, the high flying birds and the gentle lapping of waves make a stunning setting for the hour long class. A magical start to the morning. A post-yoga stroll later had me feeling a bit Bridget Jones’y but without the angst. If simple truths are shared, this is one seriously pretty place; so much so I turned off Facebook so I could concentrate on the peace and solitude.

As is becoming a rule on a trip like this, simple relaxation is balanced with incredible activities and, quite possibly, the most essential thing to do whilst vacationing in Langkawi is the Mangrove trip: the yin to the yang.

The 5000 years old Eco system of the Mangroves is fiercely revered and carries a UNESCO status, so that there can never be over-development of the island for fear of destroying the delicate balance.

It is the Mangrove waters that make the seas around Langkawi milky. If you are looking for good diving sites, they do exist at Pulau Payar island, which is one hour by ferry but considered the best snorkelling site in Malaysia.

I am slathered in both sun lotion and mosquito repellent: not an attractive combo but best be prepared as this is a 4-hour, 21km round trip up the Kilim River that takes you in to the deepest Mangrove. I feel like David Attenborough, as I see native monkeys. These notorious pink-loving pickpockets are attracted to human males - it’s a testosterone thing – so avoid eye contact. Being Alpha male does come with considerable advantage: a harem to plunder that can see the number one monkey copulate 35 times in one day. Truly the King of the Swingers.

Sometimes a bottle nosed dolphin will shelter in the Mangrove. This is a sure sign for fishermen that there is bad weather on its way. Sure enough, we see a school of dolphins swim around and past us, signalling that very fact. Not more than thirty minutes later and we were glad of our ponchos for protection against the monsoon storm. We take refuge and refuelling at the Hole in the Wall floating restaurant. The simple but tasty broth and chicken/rice was made all the more special by the Thunderclaps and torrential downpour: it once again reminded you were in jungle territory.

In low season aka rainy season, it’s fair to say it’s one day on, one day off when it comes to weather. But that didn’t detrimentally affect our enjoyment - where and when else do you get the enforced opportunity to go an explore? In fact, this changeable weather is perfect for discovering Langkawi, as when the sun comes out, it’s fierce.

The mixture of adventure and relaxation, cooking and culture is what I will remember most about this trip and one that will inspire how I holiday (and eat) in future. After immersing myself in the Malaysian way of life an ordinary holiday will no longer do and it is with the heaviest of hearts that I bid Langkawi farewell. But not goodbye.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU!

dluxe special feature

After the Christmas blow-out. boost your immunity with a natural approach to detoxing writes Janey Lee Grace.

Delay breakfast and start your day with a fresh green juice, it’s the quickest way to get copious amounts of dark green leafy veg into your system. Juice a small apple to sweeten and then throw in whatever you have, a chunk of cucumber, celery, broccoli (masses of vitamin C in the stalk) spinach, kale, a bit of lemon and a chunk of fresh ginger. Advocado makes it creamy. Serve over ice. You may also want to add a shot of Live Wheatgrass, Buy the frozen wheatgrass shots from Northants company Live Wheatgrass – delivered to your door for around one pound a day - it’s like health insurance in a shot glass. www.livewheatgrass.co.uk

If you feel as if you have a cold coming on, boost your immune system with Ovivo Wellness, take a shot a day for seven days, you’ll be amazed how it wards off the lurgy. Its Olive Leaf extract renowned for its immune boosting properties actually tastes nice.

For digestive problems Peppermint tea is great (or fresh ginger) and if you (god forbid) still have a hangover whizz up a smoothie, 2 teaspoons of honey (preferably organic wild honey) half a banana, 3 teaspoons natural yoghurt, half a cup of chopped papaya, and a cup of milk or rice milk, and serve over ice – or just have a large spoonful of Manuka Honey!

Pamper yourself during your ‘new you’ detox too. Take relaxing baths, add Himalayan salt or sea salt and a generous amount of Aromatherapy bath salts from Sensara Kolure. www.sensarakolure.com

Indulge in a scented candle but ditch the petrochemical nes – try the Indulgence essential oil natural candles from Aroma Naturals www.aromanatural.co.uk

Moisturise all over with the cheapest and best moisturiser for all skin types – Tiana raw organic extra virgin coconut oil, you only need a tiny amount. It’s available from Holland and Barrett. Ditch the chemicals in your personal care and cleaning products too, most of us are swimming in a kind of ‘toxic soup’ of artificial fragrances which can lead to insomnia, allergies, respiratory problems and more. You’ll probably sleep better and have less headaches (important if you are detoxing) and definitely save a small fortune – plus you can tick the ‘eco’ box. Opt for simple old style cleaning with a microfibre cloth and some bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar is a must and if you want something a little more antibacterial for the loo seat use a drop of Tea Tree Oil.

Above all, do something that lifts your spirits, whether that’s a long walk or just holing up and watching a comedy, - s t u d i e s everywhere show that happiness is the best antidote to disease. Make a conscious choice to smile and practice gratitude.

Happy New Year!

It’s the time of year when you start to think about making changes. Whether you’re thinking of joining a

gym, starting the five-two diet, going on the wagon (well at least cutting back on the alcohol for a couple

of weeks) or making a radical change to your own personal style, now is the time to do it.

THIN ON TOP?

But according to Jon Levy from TONI & GUY Leicester it need not be the beginning of the end “There are numerous reasons for hair to thin for both men and women, many of which will right themselves in time. However, in the short term, thinning hair can be managed to make the most of what you have.”

Trichologist of 20 years Sally-Ann Tarver MIT.FTTS of the Cotswold Trichology Centre in Worcestershire says “Check your stress levels, your diet and lifestyle (for example, any extreme weightloss programme or liquid protein replacement) and have a health check with your doctor. Anything from thyroid problems to the menopause can contribute to thinning hair. Also are you on any medication? Side effects need to be ruled out.”

So what can be done to manage the situation?

Here we look at two treatments for thinning hair readily available on the High Street.

Hair thinning and loss. Not many people want to admit to it, let alone talk about it. In men it can be a natural and expected part of the ageing process, however for women it can be a taboo subject.

NioxinWhat is it?It’s a 3-step treatment to improve hair thickness and growth. Salons have been using the Nioxin brand of treatments for hair loss for over 20 years.

How much is it?Monthly treatments are around £30 and most people notice a difference after four weeks.

How does it work? In three stages; cleanse, optimise and treat. The cleanse stage is similar to microdermabrasion for the scalp – it removes dead skin cells, excess sebum and product that can clog hair follicles and reduce growth. To optimise, revitalising conditioners are applied to the scalp before entering the treatment phase, where antioxidants and botanicals thicken each hair and refresh the scalp.

Where can I get it?TONI & GUY Leicester offer Nioxin treatments as part of its service. For more information contact TONI & GUY Leicester, 15 Market Street, Leicester Tel: 0116 249 5790.

My name is Sam Roberts and I own Legacy Training; Loughborough’s premium personal training facility.

We provide a private personal training service based on ‘quality’ where people who are serious about getting into shape come to get RESULTS!

FEMALE FAT LOSS - WHY THIS YEAR’S GOING TO BE THE ONE THAT WORKS!

Every January millions of women decide to start on a ridiculously low calorie diet and the most boring treadmill/bike workout imaginable! 4-6 weeks later they’ve quit both and are getting fatter than they were before? Sound familiar?

STOP what you’re doing, get off that treadmill and stop eating like a rabbit! Pick up some weights and start squatting, follow that up with eating whole foods high in protein like steak, chicken, fish etc...

Q. BUT WON’T I GET BIG FROM LIFTING WEIGHTS & STEAK SEEMS TO HAVE A LOT OF CALORIES?

Lifting weights wont make you bigger, but too much Christmas cake will! Women only have 10% of the testosterone that men have, so women will never build muscle like men do. If you want to get rid of those bingo wings or make that ass more peachy you have to lift weights; that treadmill just won’t work!

As far as eating, eating a high protein diet mixed with varied vegetables and good fats like nuts will put your metabolism into overdrive, so you become a fat burning machine. Not only will you look good but you’ll feel good too.

“I used to follow your typical fad diets 2-3 times a year, whilst spending endless hours on treadmills and in exercise classes always leading to me quitting and returning back to normal weight or worse. Sam at Legacy Training got me eating more whole foods and weight training 3-4 times a week. I feel amazing and as you can see from my results I’m looking pretty good too!” DEB, aged 50 (I know we didn’t believe it either!)

What attracted you to the position of Centre Director at College Court?

Throughout my working life I have always been driven by the challenge and excitement of a new role. College Court has tested my many years of experience as it is a brand new conference centre that in addition to working with the project team creating the new facility I was also building a brand new team. Both gave me immense pride and satisfaction but at the end of the day it is the people in an organisation that make the real difference and it is wonderful to see the business open and getting great feedback from the customers.

What were your first career moves and ambitions?

Even at quite a young age I was clear in my mind that I wanted a job with people and was fortunate to secure a position in a hotel. As part of a family owned group, there were two hotels and a ballroom

which at the time was the largest banqueting suite in Wales. I gained excellent experience in all departments and the company sponsored me through college. An opportunity then arose at Queens’ College , Cambridge. This was my first experience of working in a commercial environment within a University which I love and am now working in my 6th University.

Who were the main influencers on your early career path?

Lee Bollom was my first manager and was a great inspiration and support to me. We worked together for approx. 5 years and I moved from the hotels to Cambridge as I developed my career under Lee’s guidance. Lee said to me one day that it was time I moved on as he couldn’t teach me anymore and wanted to see my career develop. A great man who was very giving of his time and knowledge and a great hotelier. I miss him a lot.

What is the best piece of business advice you have ever been given?

Be truthful and honest with all the people you work with and the customer. You can be the greatest strategic thinker in the world but if

INSIDE BUSINESS: WE SPEAK WITH STEVE CRAWFORD, CENTRE DIRECTOR FOR COLLEGE COURT CONFERENCE CENTRE, LEICESTER’S NEWEST £17.5M VENUE, AND TALK AWARDS, CAREERS AND RECENT BUSINESS SUCCESSES.

people don’t trust you it’s not worth anything.

How have you kept yourself motivated through the tough recession and how did it affect you?

I have had the pleasure of working in some wonderful places and while any good business will always review its operation to ensure it is efficient and providing first class service it is also a case of keeping your nerve and the faith in the team and product

Are you now seeing growth in business tourism?

After a slow start of bringing College Court to market the business is really picking up and without any complacency the order book going forward is looking very healthy. It is wonderful that for such a young business , just 1 year old, we have already built up a

strong repeat customer base. We also need to be creative and inventive as today’s customer is spoilt for choice.

We hear that you are already an award winning venue?

College Court is a Grade II listedbuilding and has already won 8 awards for the building which is amazing. I was delighted that two of our chefs were finalists in a recent competition organised by Conference

Centres of Excellence of which we are members. I am also extremely proud that College Court has reached the finals of Hotel of the Year and Business Tourism organised by Leicestershire Promotions.

There are some first class venues that we are competing against that have many years of business behind them and so to have been shortlisted is already a great achievement.

What are your recipes for future success with College Court?

Be alert to opportunities and create your own. Keep a clear vision on the business and keep it fresh. Don’t over complicate and continue to invest in the team and facilities. Always remember that the customer is the heart and cornerstone of everything we do and you need a great team to deliver all of the above. And we do at College Court.

And finally, if you could pass one law what would it be?

To be tougher on litter, graffiti and vandalism! It is a pointless crime that nobody benefits from and if not checked can send a neighbourhood into a downward spiral.

Recruitment appears to many hirers as a game of chance, with higher stakes on the line the nearer the vacancy is to the top of the organisational ladder. Here, James Taylor, director of East Midlands-based recruitment consultancy Macildowie explains how to optimise the hiring process for executives and senior managers in order to find the best possible candidate for your business.

It’s an obvious statement but an important one nonetheless - recruiting to senior positions is different from acquiring lower ranked staff. The more senior a vacancy, the more boxes you are likely to want ticked by the successful candidate and the more selective/risk averse you will be. Hiring at executive and senior management level is about reviewing your businesses overarching goals, rather than focussing on short-term operational needs and tactical tasks that need completing.

Decide on the type of person you need and ensure that all key internal stakeholders, such as fellow board members, agree on the job and person specification. Make a written statement of intent and apportion tasks, including:

• Draw up a detailed job and person specification

• Decide on interview methods (external expert on the panel, psychometrics test, candidate case study or presentation?)

• Publicise your opportunity

• Decide which search consultant you will use

• Due diligence and reference checking

This is a brief selection of elements from a long list needed to ensure success. Sitting down and planning each individual staff member’s role in the campaign will save time and help avoid damaging oversights.

Thankfully, finding top talent is easier than it once was, and thanks to the emergence of LinkedIn, the ‘dark art’ of headhunting is now seen in a new light. Much of the research done ahead of a headhunting campaign is carried out on the social media channel. From our experience, roughly 80 per cent of hires at executive level come through utilising your professional network.

Sending an email to a prospect you’ve come across on LinkedIn is likely to get lost in the excessive ‘noise’ of the internet – you have to pick up the phone, sell the opportunity and bring your brand to life. This is why most businesses engage with a Search Consultant. The process of identifying and then communicating with the best candidates in the market can take a lot of time, especially when the majority aren’t actively looking for a new job – you have to work hard to entice people.

Beware if you choose to advertise a senior vacancy, you could receive hundreds of applications. A number of candidates will often ‘fit the bill’, creating work in sifting through applications and talking to ‘possibles’ before drawing up a shortlist. It’s important to consider candidate experience and ensure that they hear from you and gain feedback, especially if you’re a business to consumer business and the people applying for your job are also potential customers.

After narrowing the field, agree on the methodology to underpin your interview process, in order to ascertain each candidate’s commercial and strategic acumen.

Benchmark competitors to understand how your salary and remuneration package compares. If you want the best you need to work out a suitable reward strategy, including:

• A car (or car allowance)

• ‘Super’ bonus for high achievement

• Long term incentive plans for creating strategic value

• Increased company pension contributions

• Private healthcare

• 30 days holiday

Around 30 per cent of managers and executives leave their new job within 18 months of starting. Identifying future leaders from within and succession planning can negate the need to look beyond your own organisation. However, if you do recruit externally, make sure the job lives up to expectations, give the new person a chance to succeed and make sure they are efficiently on-boarded and engaged.

Retirees are set to benefit from substantial improvements to pensions from April 2015, after the Chancellor announced plans to scrap a 55% ‘death tax’ on inherited pensions from as early as April 2015.

The latest pensions shake up is good news all round for impending retirees and those already in Income Drawdown after George Osborne announced further changes to the pensions legislation.

John Freeman, in-house Financial Consultant at Newby Castleman comments: “This is the second time major improvements to pension’s legislation have been announced this year and they relate mainly to changes to the death benefits provision of Income Drawdown.

Under the current rules, a beneficiary that inherits pension benefits as a lump sum is being heavily taxed - at a rate of 55% - but this ‘death tax’ is now set to be scrapped for those who die before the age of 75. Under the new rules, the beneficiary will have the option of receiving either a lump sum or a series of income payments, both of which will be tax free.

While the over 75s will not benefit from tax-free payments, the tax charge will be significantly reduced from 55% to 45% and may be further reduced to the marginal Income Tax rate of the beneficiary from April 2016. Although the Government had been called on to look at the 55% tax rate on inherited pensions, plans to completely scrap it have been a welcome surprise and encouraging news for pension savers.”

Currently, there must be proof of financial dependency in order to be classed as a beneficiary, for example marriage or children, but the Treasury has announced that this rule will be amended to allow a pay out to any beneficiary, regardless of whether they are financially dependent.

The new rules will only apply to Income Drawdown however and the current definition of dependency will continue to apply to annuities that have been purchased through an insurance company.

John adds: “The latest news follows changes announced in March to offer retirees more flexibility when it comes to purchasing an income in retirement. More detailed information on the changes can be found at www.newbycastleman.co.uk/news.

The Government’s desire is to allow individuals more power and flexibility when it comes to making decisions on their pension savings, with an aim to encourage more pension saving in the future.”

REVIEW: 34 WINDSOR ST DARES AND DELIGHTS

34 Windsor St is one of the new breeds of restaurant that have risen like phoenixes from the recession - in fact, they're widely considered to be one of the hottest new names - to meet the demands of diners who, as part of the mid recession austerity drive, quickly tired of their gourmet ready meals at home and ran back to restaurants who could offer them quality, creativity and traceability. We went to check out their new winter menu.

Sitting and enjoying a pre-dinner drink in the well-appointed cocktail lounge, it’s hard to believe that it has taken us almost 18 months to sample 34 Windsor St. Based just off the M69 in the village of Burbage, 34 Windsor St is running into its second year of business with a hard earned, first class reputation. As the rain lashes against the period windows, you appreciate the haven-like feel of the interior scheme: a muted and unfussy palette of creams and greys that is contemporary yet comfortable.

“There's not a hint of pretention, more a stylish statement of laid back

sophistication.” It’s a feeling that is reflected in the menu and in the service of the staff. Whilst picking through the menu we are offered an Amuse Bouche of Sweet Potato and Orange Ice cream served with an olive soil which, our server admits, has divided opinion. This entrée into the eating experience changes daily and is a way for the chef to continually try new flavours, techniques and ideas amongst diners – it’s proved a great way to get feedback on what works and what doesn’t work with their customers. The saltiness of the olive soil cut through the sweet ice cream perfectly for me making it an experiment that worked.

The menu is full of these types of alternative interpretations which are designed to challenge expectations and amuse. Seared scallops are nothing new, for example, but serving them with pulled pork and burnt onion? Or how about Lamb Sweetbreads glazed in cumin butter with cauliflower textures? My curiosity as to what textures were almost got me over my sweetbread squeamishness. Instead though, I settled for a starter that screamed out ‘comfort food’ on an autumn evening: a Sparkenhoe cheese fondue with pickled onions and herb churros, which proved a warming bowl of rich flavours. The large slivers of pickled onion sliced through the cheese perfectly whenever I hooked one on to the soft, doughy churros I employed to mop my plate in satisfaction. My dining partner, regularly described as ‘fishy’, enjoyed Poached Salmon with beetroot and apple. Poached at just 42 degrees, the salmon melted on the fork and in the mouth with the apple and beetroot providing a wholesome depth to the dish.

On to our mains and I went for Flat Iron Steak with Pepper Sauce and Triple Cooked Chips whilst my dining partner opted for a Caramalized Artichoke Tarte Tatin with Spinach and Hazelnuts. Generally a tougher cut of meat, the Flat Iron Steak was prepared in a water bath at a low temperature to cook it evenly, retaining moisture and ensuring that any toughness from the cut is gone. It effectively leaves you with a steak that is rare but bloodless. As someone who likes their steak charred on the outside and red on the inside, this did take some getting used to; the texture is very different but it does mean that the full flavour of steak is retained and made for an enjoyable and interesting main course rather than a traditional safe choice. The combination of flavours in the Artichoke Tarte Tatin went down a treat with my dining partner and the idea of a side order of fried broccoli with caraway seeds is one that will be employed at home from now on. It's interesting: it's mid-week and the weather is atrocioius, yet the restaurant is pleasantly full, which is always a good baromoter of success. Relaxing after our mains we ear-wig other diners remark how they are self-confessed 'foodies' and enjoy challenging their taste buds and experiencing new flavours - this is the crux of its success, we think, as it's no village pub carvery and thank heavens for that as who needs another Harvester!

Our desserts arrive: an Orange and Ginger rice pudding and luxuriant Mississippi mud pie. As is typical of 34 Windsor St, these two old-timers had been reiterpreted with a twist. Relaxing over coffee we decide that 34 Windsor St is not just another restaurant. Rather it is an immersive experience that challenges, delights and inspires in equal measure, but without pretence. It’s an intoxicating blend and one we’re looking forward to sampling again soon especially as our meal came to around just £25 per head. 34 Windsor St is at 34 Windsor Street, Burbage. Fancy a long weekend with great food & drink? Then try Belgium, one of the most underrated travel destinations in Europe. Cheaper than Paris but with an amazing array of medieval buildings, Brussels is a modern capital city with a laidback atmosphere – brilliant for pottering around cool boutiques and little farmers markets, taking breaks at charming cafes and restaurants.

With an incredibly quick flight from East Midlands Airport, in just 45 minutes you’re landed in Brussels and ready to be exploring the streets. bmi regional flies up to three times a day direct from East Midlands Airport to Brussels and at £80 one way it’s very affordable (see bmiregional.com).

We started our tour in the charming medieval university town of Ghent, which is about an hour away from Brussels (regular trains run from the airport station). Ghent is like the Belgian Cambridge – lots of cyclists, quaint cobbled streets and people punting down the waterways that traditionally provided the town with its trade in agricultural goods. However, now you are more likely to find tourists and students in the town, viewing its fab quay area, sampling the local produce and visiting the world famous cathedral. An amazing destination for a weekend break, Ghent is a great place to stroll around – small enough to be entirely walkable but still with lots to see. We stayed at the excellent and rather luxurious NH Gent Belfort, which had comfy beds, huge modern rooms and an excellent buffet breakfast.

For a funky yet informal meal, try the Belga Queen – situated in the beautifully lit and renovated quay area, the Belga Queen is located in a renovated 13th Century dockside building that has dealt with everything from grain to beer. With a contemporary take on traditional cuisine, we were treated to Weaver fish with a trio of Peas, the tiny local shrimp, oodles of wine and a fab locally produced elderflower liqueur called Roomer. From the main square it is a short walk to the pub and bar district, including the Smallest Bar in Ghent, which is teeming with locals and students, all of whom were very friendly.

The bars are open into the small hours, and the city feels safe and welcoming.

The following morning we set about finding out about what Belgium is famous for – chocolate! Arriving at the Chocolato emporium, we were greeted by every sort of chocolate imaginable – drinking chocolate in a huge array of flavours (and lactose free for me), individual dainties and huge bars. The chocolatier, who had given up a lucrative career in banking to follow his dream, got us into aprons and in front of the chocolate machine, which pours a permanent stream of melted chocolate – mmm! We were instructed in making our own little flavoured chocolates, which we got to take home with us, as well as taste and be educated in different flavours and types of chocolate.

Then it was straight from chocolate onto a three-course lunch of more traditional Belgian food at Stadsrestaurant, consisting of Hinkelspel, a deep fried cheese croquette, followed by an organic beef stew marinated in Leffe beer, salad and French fries, all rounded off by an enormous tiramisu. By this time we all rolled out of the restaurant and off for a much needed walking tour. The tour allowed us to soak up the arts and retail scene in Ghent, with a funky graffiti street where taggers and artists alike can express themselves in a free and legal way, and a great retro café with a fun chandelier made of old Barbie dolls. The gut-busting itinerary then continued with a five-course beer themed extravaganza at Les Brigittines, an excellent traditional Belgian restaurant, although it is fair to say that by the time we had reached Beer Sorbet, we’d all had enough!

The following morning after a light breakfast at the Hotel Pantone (a hotel themed on the Pantone scale of colour) we explored the centre of Brussels, taking in the rather spectacular Medieval square, some great markets and excellent boutiques. If you are into the independent retail scene, then Belgium is the place to be, as both Ghent and Brussels boasts some fab boutiques, many with a vintage or pre-loved theme.

However, we were here to eat not shop so after the mandatory two hours, we stopped for more food at L’Amour Fou, a modern American diner with amazing burgers, rosemary fried potatoes and the BEST BANOFFEE PIE IN THE UNIVERSE! This is a great place for families as it is laidback and provides a safe separate playroom for the kids to run off their dinner.

But no such time for us, we were off on a tour of the rather fascinating Art Nouveau architecture in the city, many of which are still residential properties, and add a truly beautiful aspect to the sprawling modern capital. However one thing was missing – we hadn’t had any waffles, so we crammed in a quick waffles and hot toffee sauce at the station before making our way home.

A great gastro getaway for grown ups, Brussels and Ghent have it all – food, drink, friendly atmosphere and loads to see and do. A must visit for all fans of the weekend city break.

LINCOLN TOWNLEY AT ANTIDOTE

Bad boy writer and artist Lincoln Townley has brought his unique style to Leicestershire as he exhibits his first art collection at Antidote Art in Lutterworth. Townley, author of the infamous ‘The Hunger’ novel, which documents his wild lifestyle whilst working for one of the country’s best known strip clubs, translates the decadence and darkness of that world into a collection of captivating contemporary images.

Following a spectacularly successful launch in London, Lincoln chose Lutterworth’s Antidote Art to show the collection and represent his interests outside of the capital.

Two Leicestershire charities have benefitted from a significant financial boost thanks to a glittering fundraiser by an East midlands charitable trust.

The Star Trust’s annual Ball, held at Stapleford Park, saw business leaders and entrepreneurs from across the East Midlands dig deep and raise an outstanding £95,000 for good causes, including Loughborough-based Steps, a conductive education centre for children with motor disorders, and Wenlo Riding for the Disabled.

The funds raised on the night will play a key role in improving the lives of some of Leicestershire’s most in need residents. Steps, based in Shepshed, delivers conductive education, a pioneering method developed in Hungary that takes a holistic approach, encouraging children with motor dysfunctions and/or delays and often other complex needs such as Cerebral Palsy and Down Syndrome, to learn through play.

Tim Maxted of CEO Berkeley Insurance Group and Star Trust committee member said: “The Star Trust has established a reputation for raising exceptional amounts for small charities right across the region, and the outstanding total raised by our generous supporters at this, our second annual ball, firmly cements this.

“We are delighted to be able to make a real difference to these deserving causes that lack the fundraising impact of more high profile organisations. We would urge any small, East Midlands-based charity that is seeking funds for a specific project to get in touch so that we can lend our support.”

Charities interested in applying to the Star Trust should visit www.star-trust.org.uk for further information.

Bad boy writer and artist Lincoln Townley brought his unique style to Leicestershire this month as he launched his Limited Edition Collection of artwork at Lutterworth’s Antidote Art.

Townley, whose work documents his wild lifestyle whilst working for one of the country’s best known strip clubs, draws the voyeur into the decadence and darkness of that world with a collection of captivating and contemporary images.

Lincoln explains “The paintings are about consumption, madness, the darker side of life. When I was living in Soho it was all about excess - everyone I was involved with wanted to take and take and take - it’s such an extreme environment you don’t feel like you’re doing anything wrong but you are pushing yourself to your limit.”

Guests at the VIP event included the artist’s wife and partner of three years, actress and TV personality, Denise Welch. Sara

Lovatt, owner of Antidote Art, said “We are thrilled to be working with Lincoln and his exciting collection, and to have been chosen by Lincoln to be the only gallery to show his work”

The collection is free of charge to view at Antidote Fine Art with Limited Edition prints available from £750.00.

SAm BAILEY29th and 30th Jan @ De Montfort Hall

The former prison officer from Leicester has experienced dreams becoming reality; including an incredible No. 1 with her single Skyscraper, supporting Beyonce on her current tour, performing with her idol Michael Bolton at the National Television Awards and now her own headline tour.

“I’ve been performing since I was 15 but I never got to where I wanted to be. Then real life, needing to pay bills, marriage and children happened and you just put everything on hold. X-Factor gave a woman like me a chance. It gave me my confidence back, it gave me music back, and this is for all those people out there who believed in me!”

JImmY CARR- FUNNY BUSINESS6th Feb @ De Montfort Hall

Jimmy’s been described as “the hardest working man in comedy”. Which, let’s face facts, is not that impressive. It’s like being the “Tallest Dwarf” or the “Healthiest Glaswegian”. Really not that big a deal. Funny Business is Jimmy’s brand new stand up show. Come for the witty and incisive musings on the human condition; stay for the k*** gags.

NEW ARTWORK FOR NEW WALK RESTAURANT

Budding teenage artist Liam Burt has created a stunning large-scale artwork for city centre restaurant The White Peacock. The work, which is a paper stencil in white, will be on permanent display in the restaurant in a prominent position on the main staircase.

Liam’s work, which is being developed and supported by Soft Touch Arts, is a one-off bespoke creation commissioned by the restaurant’s chef patron Phil Sharpe.

Phil said, “We were looking for original artwork created by a local artist for to decorate the restaurant with, and this partnership with Liam and Soft Touch Arts seemed the perfect solution. In addition to it being by a local artist, we are encouraging Liam to pursue art as a career.”Soft Touch Arts has been working with Liam for over four years after he was referred by his school, Willowbrook. Kieran Walsh from Soft Touch Arts said “Art is a key means of self expression for young people, and at Soft Touch we are working with budding artists like Liam to develop their creative skills but also encourage a career in the arts. When we found out that Phil was looking for an original piece of work by a local artist, this seemed a perfect opportunity.”

Liam said “Working with Soft Touch has increased my confidence generally and has also given me a reason to get out of the house, which has helped me through my depression. It has also been a great way to meet people.”

COSY CLUB OPENS IN LEICESTER

After an extensive and creative refurbishment, the former Veejay Knitwear building on Leicester’s Highcross Street opened its doors as The Cosy Club, an eccentric eaterie and bar aimed at offering visitors to the city a truly unique drink and dining experience.

With a design ethos of village hall meets cricket pavilion, the former factory had been sympathetically converted in an ever so slightly way. Mismatched furniture sit against exposed brick walls whilst factory style lighting illuminates the collection of weird and wonderful vintage oil portraits and curios on the wall.

We settled down on a busy rainy Saturday to sample the extensive lunch menu that very much lived up to the venue’s Cosy name by offering oodles of comfort food fair. To start with we sampled one of the amazing sharing platters, perfect as a starter or to nibble on with a cocktail or two after work. We opted for the vegetarian platter which offered Baked Brie, delicious chimichurri falafels, babaganoush, mushroom, garlic and thyme pate, chipotle salsa and marinated olives. Delicious although the uneven number of falafel nearly caused a table war as forks flew to grab the last one.

Moving on to mains I opted for the Beer Battered Cornish Pollock with skin fried chips, minted mushy peas and tartare sauce which was quite literally heaven on a plate thanks to the delicious crispy batter encasing the creamy white fish. My dining partner opted for the French favourite of Pan fried Chicken breast with peas, onions and bacon in a creamy Dijon sauce; wonderfully warming on a rainy day and perfect with a glass of rich red wine.

Feeling full we agreed to share a dessert only to order one each anyway; a Snowball Cheesecake and a Sticky Toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. Topped with marshmallow the cheesecake is a chocoholic’s dream; deliciously rich this could easily be shared and goes great with a long coffee. The Sticky toffee pudding appeared to be delicious as my dining partner, despite pleading fullness, demolished the generous portion in seconds.

At around £20 a head for 3 courses, our lunch was not only delicious but also great value. Add in the original, quirky surroundings and great service and The Cosy Club is proving to be a great new addition to the city’s drinking and dining scene.

TUmBLE INTO ALICE'S WONDERLAND AT CHATSWORTH THIS CHRISTmAS

Visitors to Chatsworth this Christmas should prepare to head down the rabbit hole and through the looking glass as this year’s Christmas theme takes inspiration from the vivid and fantastical world created by author Lewis Carroll in his classic ‘Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.’

Chatsworth is extending its Christmas opening period and re-opening the house, garden and farmyard after Christmas for visitors to enjoy over the remaining school holiday period. The house will be closed on Dec 24, 25 and 26, and re-open on Dec 27 until 31 December, and from 2 to 4 January 2015.

There will be grins as wide as a Cheshire Cat’s as visitors are taken on a magical journey through the lower floors of the house.

The interiors are transformed to recreate classic scenes from the enduringly popular story of a girl named Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar creatures such as the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter, a sleepy Dormouse and the Queen of Hearts.

On arrival, the North Entrance Hall will be dressed to create the illusion of tumbling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland, where visitors will encounter the Mad Hatter's Tea Party; the Game of Croquet, and the table with the infamous ‘Drink Me’ bottle and ‘Eat Me’ cake.

Playing Card Soldiers, White Rabbits, and Tweedledum and Tweedledee costumed guides will be on hand to direct visitors through to majestic woodland scene. There, a giant Caterpillar will be smoking his pipe on top of an oversized mushroom as psychedelic sitar music plays.

This year the ever popular Christmas Markets will run from November 13 to 23. We really do recommend booking online before your visit to avoid the queues! www.chatsworth.org

So we assume you know the show quite well...

“Yes! I’m definitely familiar with the songs but the problem is you think you know them until you actually start working on them and then you think ‘Oh, Ok, hang on I don’t remember this bit’ or ‘What’s happening here? I was sure that wasn’t like that’ so, in actual fact, it’s one of those shows where although you think you know it, you actually have to own up and admit that maybe you don’t know it as well as you thought you did.

Does that semi familiar feeling make it a harder to perform?

The thing is you really have to make it your own; Maria especially is a role that everyone has an understanding of and an affinity with so you have to work out a way of bringing your own essence to it. That’s something that I will find during rehearsals; that’s what we use that journey for as actors, to start to find your own Maria! It’s your own Maria that fits in with your own Captain Von Trapp and with the children. It’s all a bit like a jigsaw puzzle really!

Is it daunting taking on such an iconic role?

It is, and if I think about it too long I ask ‘what am I doing???’ but there is nothing more exciting than being able to put your own stamp on a role that you really love and that you have always wanted to play. It’s a bit like discovering her all over again and that’s quite nice really. The thing is you can’t make mistakes when recreating a character as long as you are truthful to what you are playing- there’ s no right or wrong way to play anything as long as you are honest to the text.

The Sound of Music is so well known, do you think audiences will be able to take something new from the show?

I think so. The show in itself is actually slightly different to the film. I mean some the songs come in in different places and of course as director Paul Kerryson has his own vision of it all so there will definitely be differences. Drew Mconie, the choreographer, is really giving these songs new life as well. At the end of the day though, the story, which we all love, is remaining the same.

What do you think makes the show so popular?

The warmth and humanity of it. The message to follow your dreams is very strong as is that family bond, the fight to stay together and the fight for love. This was a horrific time in Austria with the war and we really do focus on that in the show as well the fears that people were living under at the time. It’s not all fluffy, we really do look at the reality of what was happening to them as well.

Nothing says Christmas like Nuns and Nazi’s, It is quite a dark tale if you look at it. Do you think it’s an odd choice for a festive performance?

No I really don’t. Christmas is about being with family and that is what this story is all about. It’s about love and cherishing what is around you. In the end they leave everything they know; money, their home, luxury, for the most important thing in life which is family and love. I think that’s such an uplifting message for families; what could be more perfect at Christmas?

It’s a great show for children as it offers them a wonderful lesson. My neice is coming who is four and I am so excited as it is her first show and the first show that she is ever going to see me in. I am so worried that I’m going to burst into tears as it will be incredible having her watching her Aunty Lor Lor on the stage. I just pray that she doesn’t scream out my name.

You’re back at Curve as a lead after being in Hello Dolly and Piaf- quite a different role.

It is really exciting as this is the 3rd part I’ve played for Paul Kerryson and every part i’ve played for him has been completely different like either end of the spectrum and now Maria is something completely different again- it’s very trusting of him and an amazing opportunity for me.

This is Paul’s last production at Curve, do you feel a great responsibility for that?

I always do, you always want to create the best show possible but with it being his last one here at Curve then I do want it be more special than any of the others and for him to enjoy every second of producing the show with his cast. I’m sure he will do as he has put together an amazing cast, it’s only day two but everyone seems pretty top notch. We have the lovely Michael French who is already fantastic and we’ve already got some great rapport.

The Sound of Music runs from 28th November until 17th Jan at Curve, Rutland Street, Leicester. For tickets call 0116 242 3595 or visit www.curveonline.co.uk
