Facts
• Population: 5.5 mill (2010)
• Percentage of a year group moving on from basic education to youth education: 96.9% (2008)
• Percentage of a year group continuing into higher education: 54.9% (2008)
• Approximately 58% of those completing a higher education are girls (2003)
• Percentage of GDP spent on education: 8% (2005)
The Danish education system consists of 3 levels:
• Basic school - primary and lower secondary schools – FolkeskoleA 9-year comprehensive school. Followed by a voluntary 10th school year
• Youth education - upper secondary schoolvary between 2 and 4 years
– Academically oriented (general upper secondary education) - Gymnasie
– Vocationally oriented (vocational education and training) - Erhvervsskole
• Higher education– Short-cycle (1-3 years)– Medium-cycle (3-4 years) – Long-cycle (5-6 years) higher education.
