    CHTHICAL SMTE TRICKS

    In presenting t h is oofcplfcte a 34 p r a c t ic a l t r e a t is e c f S la te T ricks we are a id in g tftia eh&pter-on Cheai

  • SULPHURIC ACID (poison)# This w r it in g w i l l be in v is ib le and thes la te s may toe shown and handled, w ith ease* THEY CAN BE BRUSHEDOFF WITH A DRY CLOTH. How, the damp c lo th is apparentlywet w ith water tout i t is a c tu a lly wet w ith a s o lu t io n ofSUB - ACETATE OF LEAD (POISon) The s la te s are washed w ith t h isso lu t io n . When they are dry your message w i l l appear in CHALKWHITE WRITING.

    SLATE MANIPULATION (HO FLAPS)

Below we describe a se ries of movosand m an ipu la tions th a t w i l l toe new to most Magicians*

TWO UNPREPARED SLATES ARE ACTUALLY SHOWN (APPARENTLY ) ON ALL SIDES AND YET THE SPIRIT MESSAGE IS IRODUCED WITHOUT THE AID OF FLIPS OR FAKES.

    To make these moves c lea r to the student w ithout the use of i l lu s t r a t io n s , we suggest th a t you you number your p a ir of s la te s on a l l four s ides , i . e . Numbers one, two, th ree , four. ( These numbers may toe w r itte n in sm all f ig u res upon the wooden rim s of your s la te s in th e extreme r ig h t hand corner ) N a tu ra lly , these numbers are NOT used in the ACTUAL PRESENTATION of t h is e ffe c t .

Stack the s la te s toge the r, having on th top the s la t# marked one and two. ( Being sure to have the number two s ide on th e bottom)Now the bottom s la te , ( having the numbers three and four on i t ) is placed so th a t the number four side is at th e bottom . This w i l l g ive you the numbers stacked in consecutive order, one, two, three and four from the top to th e bottom when the e la tes are stackedo r placed toge ther.

The w r it in g th a t you w ish to m a te r ia lis e is w r itte n upon the side o f the s la te that we have marked number two on i t s border r im . A fter you hav w r itte n your message on the number two side you are now ready to proceed w ith the t r ic k * F irs t show t o your audience the sides of the s la te numbered One and Four. (HOLDING THE TWO SLATES TOGETHER SO THAT THE MESSAGE ON THE NUMBS TWO SIDE WILLNOT BE IX POSED-- AS IT WILL BE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WWO STACKEDSLATES BEING FLUSH WITH THE HUMBER THREE SIDE )

Now place the top s la te on the bottom ( which w i l l b r in g number three on top . Humber four and number one in the m iddle a nd number two ( the side w ith your message on i t ) a t the bottom*

Casually show the top s la te which is number'three, and open the two s la te s outwar&r; . {BOOK* Fashion) which w i l l expos#:th* number ;one and four sides o f the s la te s . Now p lace the s la te s so th a t N umber one w i l l aga in be on top and number three on the bottom Now show the top and bottom of the s la te s as they are he ld together th a t is numbers one and th ree . I t w i l l appear now to th e audience t hat they have seen a l l four sides of th e s la te s , but in r e a l i ty they have missed the message side Number Two*

    You now have th e s la te s bound or t ie d ana you are ready to proceed, w ith the balance o f th e e f fe c t . A fter a l i t t l e p rac tise you w i l l make these moves in a n a tu ra l manner ana very qu ick ly , w ithout a seconds h e s ita t io n .

    You w i l l f in d upon p e r fe c t io n of t h is ro u tin e th a t you are in possession of a se ries ofi moves th a t w i l l fo ft l cany a Me&iuu and 3t a g ic ia n .

    The i l lu s io n created is p e rfe c t. The onlooker a c tu a lly th in k s th a t a l l sides of the s la tes are exhib ited*

VISIBLE MATER IALISATION AND INVISIBLE SPIRIT WRITING METHODS.

    Pr eamble.

    V is ib le M a te r ia lis a t io n Methods of S la te W riting have enjoyed a 1 arge sa l* among Magio Dealers, and an immense p o p u la r ity w ith th e Magicians of the past few years* These methods are the ones th a t a l l Magicians and Pseudo-Magicians h*ve been hoping for fo r years but thought im possible to perform# Doing away w ith a l l mechanical means and processes, fakes and f la p s , as i t does, i t is no doubt the greatest s in g le advancement in t h is p a r t ic u la r l in e o f e ffe c ts th a t Magicians have yet encountered*

( Hothing apparently ) Hot a th in g but an ord inary s la te i3 used. The fac t th a t the message is developed in r e a l sharp chalk w r it in g (That is , a c tu a lly Chalk) and th a t the spectator may wash away t he message at the conc lus ion of the t r ic k , is a lso an added fea tu re . Spectator may even keep th e s la te as a souvenir, as no amount o f ana ly s is w i l l revea l the r e a l chem ical secret*

    VISIBLE MATERIALIZATION METHOD NUMBER ONE.

EFFECT: S la te is cleaned w ith sponge and shown repeated ly on bo thsides* I t is then placed upon a stand-rack in f u l l view of the audience. The usua l Book, D ic tio na ry , or Figure A d d it io n Test is made* A spectator is now asked to go to the o la te , (Performer does not need to go near i t ) and spectator upon tu rn in g the s la t# around f in d s the message, word, or t o t a l , in snow white c lea r chalk S la tes m y now be examined most m inutely*

    VISIBLE MATERIALIZATION METHOD NUMBER TJO*

EFEECT: In t h is e ffect two s la ts s may be usca, and the messageproduced on one side -- or on two s ides -- or th ree sides or on a l l four s id e s . This i3 poss ib le w ith met h id Humber Two, ana is offered fo r the f i r s t time in Magic to the w rite rs knowledge. The Messages may be produced one at a time or a l l together* In th is method the s la te s are covered w ith a borrowed hankerchief*

INVISIBLE SPIRIT HAND METHOD NUMBB THREE*

    EFFECT : An ordinary s la te or s i l i c a t e s la te is exhib ited* This is now thoroughly cleaned w ith a moistened sponge. A short question is now addressed to the s p ir i t World*, such as *Do th y Dea& re tu rn 1 This question is w r itte n across the top _ c f th e s la te in p la in white cha lk , or the spectators i n i t i a l s may be w r itte n there instead fo r la te r id e n t i f ic a t io n . S la te is no.? placed upon stand-rack on your ta b le , or suspended by ribbons across the stage*

    Performer now c a l ls ' for message to appear from the 's p i r i t world1 Slowly while the e n tire audience is looking a t the e la te a s p ir i t message v is ib ly l in e by l in e appears w r itte n r ig h t under the question or the i n i t i a l s th a t were always v is ib le a t the top of the s la t* . THIS MESSAGE APPEARS IN PURE WHITE CHALK* The s la te may now be passed to the audience w ith a d ish of c lear waterand a sponge-- and bo th message and question may be washed o f f , too*To PROVE MESSAGE WAS NOTEECHED OR PAINTED UPON THE SLATE.

REQUISITES AND CHEMICALS FOR MATERIALIZATION METHODS*

SPECIAL DESIGNED SLATES.S la tes w ith wooden rims may be used in these experiments, but they are

  • in fe r io r fo r t h is type o f work* The wooden rims r e ta in the chem ical odor of the b lock out l iq u id s , and make the e n tire te s t obviously ju s t a chem ical t r ic k *

    The typ* of Straw Board S la te described, are easy to make and are id e a l fo r a l l methods o f V is ib le M a te r ia liz a t io n .

Procure a large sheet of Straw Board from a Book Binder Supply House. Give t h is board th ree coats of "Blackboard S la te P a in t " (This pa in t is ob ta inab le a t a l l s ign pa in te r stores ) Cut t h is pa in ted board ( a f te r a thorough dry ing , in to s izes of 10 x 13 inches. These s la te s w i l l be found to be s u ita b le fo r a l l of the v is ib le and in v is ib le methods.

They are porous, and absorb and r e ta in the b lock out l iq u id s perfectly*

SPECIAL GRADES OF CHALK FOR METHODS.

There are two grades of chalk us^d in the v is ib le m a te r ia liz a td o n Methods. A l l Messages are w r itte n w ith the s o lf chalk known as "A tla n t ic White" Brand, or "Kroma 53" made by the American Crayon Co* The HARD CHALK is known as the "Dustless Type". This hard dust less type is used in the la s t method fo r w r it in g question or i n i t i a l s on s la te only H

F ir s t , sharpen to as f in e apo in t as poss ib le , the f in e white cha lk .Prepare about te n s t i c k s ------ d ip a piece of t h is chalk in toS o lu tio n WAM* Let the chalk soak up w e ll in t h is l iq u id .Remove thecha lk from the l iq u id and shake o f f excess f l u id . S tart w r it in g your message upon the str&w-board s la te . WRITE ViRY LIGHTLY. (You w i l l f in d th a t the w r it in g is scarcely v is ib le - due to the chem ical combination "A" rendering the chalk almost in v is ib le . )Y ou may d isregard t h is , as w r it in g w i l l tu rn snow white upon dry ing Dip chalk in to s o lu t io n "A every three or four words NOTE.As the soft white po in t o f the chalk wears down th a t is as the w ritin g becomes th ic k and broad, d iscard chalk and use a new f in e pa in ted one, dipped of course in the "A* o lu tio n * Upon completing message le t i t dry fo r ts n or f i f t e e n minutes i f possib le Your message w i l l now appear c lear and white, ju s t as any other chalk would appear (Except th a t the w r it in g is very t h in and f in e lin ed ) always bear th is is mind -- WRITE LIGHTLY Keeping the w r it in g t h in and f in e lin e d - Much of the success of these metnods is due to t h is fa c t , as the messages . r i l l deirelope and b lock out quicker when the above is adhered t o . Now while t h is message looks lik e ordinary chalk , a pecu lia r w i l l be no ticed here. PREPARATION BEFORE PRESENTATION. Method One.

Upon your ta b le h-s-v a largo bowl, (Brass or C e l l in i &r )Bowl should b about six inches deep ana te n to twelve inches indiameter ) In to t h is bowl p lace two sm a ll r^lass cups rmch as used in O ffices to ho ld m oistening sponges e tc . F i l l one of these cup# w ith p la in water. In to t h is p lace a sm all pad of co tton or a em ail s i lk sponge. In to the second cup place wad of co tton or i l k sponge ( s i lk sponges are much b e tte r ) ana f i l l t h is cup w ith l iq u id MBW. Now take your straw board s la te ( .vhich has yourmessage w ritten on i t w ith th e so ft chalk and * fixed* to the s la te .vith l iq u id "A* ) Floor a quan tity of l iq u id *B*over the a l a t e --- - (w r it in g w i l l disappear a t onoe ) TheSoft posous nature of the slate w i l l r e ta in the l iq u id for a minute or more, thus keeping the message blocked out or biank.NOW LIGHTLY wipe the wet surface of the s la te w ith your sponge dipped in th e l iq u id *BH Thi3 w i l l remove tha wet shiny lock - Do not rub too hara. Brush your sponge very, very, l ig h t ly ver th e surface* You are now ready fo r the p resen ta tion :

    MATERIALISATION METHODS* (CONTINUES)

B r i ng ta b le as arranged as above In to room ( or you inay have the bowl prepared as above and ha vs an a ss is tan t b r in g the "trea ted w s la te to you. S la te may be shewn iroe ly to your audienoe as i t is now to a l l appearance b lan k . Remember however wliioh side DOES have the in v is ib le w r it in g upon it *

Place your hand in to the bowl, remove from i t the sponge out o f the sm all cup COOT AIMING THE WATER Wash the aide of the s la te th a t is ao t u a l ly b lank (The one th a t ha no message prepared on i t )Wash th ia thoroughly w ith the water soakea s i lk sponge. No# plao the water soaked s i lk back in the bowl- ana wifeh one movement p ick up your other sponge soaked in th e l iq u id *B* Make t h is exchange appear as i f you were merely re-wetting your f i r s t sponge Now tu rn your f i r s t tnlnn your s la t# over (blocked out w riting side toward) and than SQUEEZE OR FLOW the l iq u id from the sponge a l l ovar the surface of the s la ts . This w i l l cause any w ritin g th a t may have developed to aga in disappear* LIGHTLY bruah over t h is surface as i f you were in ten t upon g iv ing i t a thorough c lean ing . S la te may now be shown on bo th sides* A fter t h is "o leansing" place the s la te wherever designated by the auiienoe* (V r it in g side away from them always I ) I f you use two s la tes wash the second s la te w ith the water sponge and place the second s la te upon the f i r s t one - w r it in g to be the in s id e - - Place a piece of chalk between them and b in d s la te s w ith a stout rubber band - chalk between p la tes allow s a ir t o enter thus drying s la tes and developing message . A fter the usua l te s ts the s la tes are opened or turned around a# th e case maybe and message is found to be w r itte n in c lear white cha lk . While the audience is inspecting the w r it in g g ive a spectator the water sponge andin s truc t him to wash the message aw ay-- TO PROVE THAT IT IS NOTETCHed THERE VITH ACIDS, ETC.

    ADDITIONAL HINTS ! I IYou may f in d th a t the message w i l l develop too fas t fo r proper presen ta tion and exam ination. This w i l l be tru e i f your 'B* l iq u id is the Benzole. I f you use Naptha fo r your *Bf l iq u id you w i l l f in d your developement a l i t t l # slower, as Naptha evaporates m uch slower th an Benzole, and is not as s u ita b le fo r Parlo r work as Naptha gives o ff a muoh stronger odor th an Benzole. Suggestion :I f your ta b le top is covered w ith flowered cretonne c lo th , th e fo llow ing h in t is a s o lu t io n fo r the 'Too fast developer* e ffe c t .

INVISIBLE SPIRIT HAND METHOD NUMBER THREE.

In t h i , the la s t method, the Success of i t s performance depends on the showmanship exh ib ited by th e Performer as w e ll as h i a manipulat io ns .

    In order to acquaint the reader w ith the process --- we o u t lin e th ie te s t experiment Use a Straw board e la te w ith the message ''f ix ed onto I t w ith th e soft white chalk and the s o lu t io n MAW. A llow the message to become DRY. Now p lace the s la te f la t upon your t i ib e l top (Message r,ide d wnwards) Pour a l ib e r a l q u an tity of S o lu tio n MCW over i t r surface . The message w i l l fade out. A fter the s la te hae soaked up t h is f i r s t flow ing of s o lu t io n MC" aga in pour a goodly qua n t ity o f i t oyer the message side of t he s la te * NOW RAISE THE SLATE TO A VERTICAL POSITION and lean i t aga ins t your stand rack Step br.ck a few feet from th e rack and you w i l l w itness th e process in a c t io n as seen by your specta to rs . As the l iq u id flows aovmwards o f f the s la te the upper l in e of th e meseage w i l l become y is ib le l in e by l in e . This e ffe c t r e a lly uncanny when seen from your present viewpoint (You may le t the l iq u id run o f f on to th e ta b le to p or i f the s la te is hung by c l ip s and a r ibbon le t l iq u id run onto f lo o r or carpet i t is harmless )

    STAGE PRESENTATION. For the v is ib le present&.tion of a message under a question w r itte n upon a shown s la te . Also i n i t i a l s of spectator may be placed at the s la te to p fo r fu rthe r id e n t i f ic a t io n .

Have upon your ta b le a shallow pan, s l ig h t ly larger th an the s la te you are to use. Pan should be about one inch deep. ( Pan sunken in to t a b le top and psn bottom covered w ith ta b le top m a te r ia l is a very good idea to use ) . In two corners of t h is pan place two b locks of wood about one inch square. The pan is f i l l e d w ith th e l iq u id "C"

The message is w r itte n upon t he lower h a lf of th e s la te w ith the soft chalk ju s t as in the other met hods. iSfesh the top h a lf of t h is prepared s la te w ith a water soaked s i lk spong (Do th is o f f stage be ing c a re fu l not to get any of the now v is ib le message wet w ith water Upon your ta b le a lso have severa l pieces of the Hard "Dust less Type" Chalk.
