Welcome

Welcome to the BBC Young Musician 2016 Jazz Award. We’re delighted to be back to find and showcase the most talented young jazz musicians in the UK.

At the 2014 Final, after two days of intense rehearsal and mentoring from the band, five young musicians played a set with the Gwilym Simcock Trio in front of a jury including Django Bates, Trish Clowes, Julian Joseph and Jason Yarde. The hall was packed, the music ranged from Charlie Parker to Pat Metheny, and there were five new numbers, written by the finalists themselves.

The judges reckoned that every finalist was the winner at some point in their deliberation, but after a long discussion they chose saxophonist Alexander Bone as the first ever recipient of the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award. According to Alexander, the experience was fun, challenging and inspiring – mostly because of “the insanely talented contestants and the Gwilym Simcock Trio”. Turn to the back of this brochure for more about Alexander’s experience of BBC Young Musician and how his life has changed since he won the title. Clips of his and the other finalists’ performances are available at our website: bbc.co.uk/youngmusician

It was clear at the 2014 Final that there are some seriously talented young jazz musicians out there. For the 2016 competition, we’d like to hear even more of you, so we’ve raised the age limit to 21 and we’re extending our invitation to jazz singers. It won’t be easy to lift that trophy – you’ll need to impress at three different rounds over several months, but Alexander’s advice speaks volumes: “It was such a positive thing to be a part of! Go for it!"

We can’t wait to hear you all. Good luck!

First Stage Autumn 2015

Entrants are invited to submit a video recording of themselves in performance by 20th November 2015.

You may enter on any instrument including voice, and may perform any genre of jazz. You may choose your own programme but we recommend that you show some contrast (tempo/feel etc) in your choice of music. You may play with a band or solo, or in any combination, as long as your performance is showcased and we are able to assess it. There must be a substantial element of improvisation in your performance; this applies to singers as well as instrumentalists.

Your pieces should be filmed in a single take with no editing within each piece. The total duration of your video should not exceed 10 minutes. The quality of the video should be good enough for us to assess your performance, but does not have to be of a professional standard. Your video may be submitted on a memory stick or on a DVD (please send two copies), or you may email [email protected] with a download link to a video file. Please do not email your video file as an attachment – it will not reach us. Your video should be accompanied by the following information: your name, instrument, the piece or pieces you are playing in order of performance and their durations. The names and durations of the pieces must also be filled in on the entry form.

We recommend that you keep a copy of your performance. We are unable to return your video. The material will be kept for reference and possible broadcast. You will be notified of the results of the First Stage on or before Friday 18th December 2015.

Your set must include performance with the band. If you choose, your set may also include an unaccompanied solo.

There will be an opportunity for a short rehearsal with the band on the day of your audition.

You may choose your own programme which should not exceed 14 minutes, including any breaks. Your time starts when the first note is played. If you exceed this time limit you may be stopped by the BBC representative. You may perform any genre of jazz. We recommend that you show some contrast (tempo/feel etc) in your choice of music. There must be a substantial degree of improvisation in your performance. This applies to singers as well as instrumentalists.

Alexander Bone (saxophone)

As a student at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, Alexander Bone watched his classical musician friends and schoolmates enter BBC Young Musician over the years. In 2014 his chance came and he didn’t think twice: “when I heard there was a new jazz competition I thought it was an opportunity not to be missed!” It’s a decision he doesn’t regret. “The experience of working towards the different rounds, meeting the judges, playing with the Gwilym Simcock Trio and hanging out with the other contestants, that was what made the competition so special for me. We all got on really well and I often see all the other finalists. I think that helped us all relax and focus on our music instead of there being any awkwardness and tension between us.”

The relaxed and supportive atmosphere at the Final helped Alexander to impress a panel of judges which included Django Bates, Trish Clowes, Julian Joseph and Jason Yarde. “I was happy with my set, I felt like what I’d played showed my style and my influences. Afterwards I allowed myself to relax and enjoy the second half, but waiting for the winner to be announced was a nervy moment! I was in complete shock! I still can’t believe it when I think back...” Since the 2014 Final, Alexander has continued to pursue jazz and electronic music, playing, producing and arranging. A highlight was working in the studio with Nile Rodgers and Rudimental, and he’s played at jazz festivals and other incredible venues including the Royal Albert Hall. Alexander was invited to play at this year’s Last Night of the Proms concert in Swansea with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. He has recently moved to London to continue his jazz studies at The Royal Academy of Music.

For Alexander, the BBC Young Musician Jazz Award is a challenging but rewarding process: “I spent a lot of time practising and composing / arranging for the different rounds. I gave it my best shot as I knew that then if I didn’t get through, I’d be satisfied that I’d tried my best. Working with musicians as incredible as those in the Gwilym Simcock Trio was one of the best things I took from the

competition. They really bring out the best in you. Go for it, you’ve got nothing to lose!”

Alexander will return to BBC Young Musician in 2016 to perform at the Jazz Award Final on 12th March.
