Week 9 Term 2 Tuesday 21 st June 2016 KS are learning how to speak Bundjalung. We say Good Morning (Bugul Mulugum) and Good Afternoon (Bugul Yowan) to Mrs Speck, Kim, each other and everyone who visits us, every day. We’ll be learning lots more too. We have been busy getting ready for NAIDOC Day, with dot painting boomerangs; earth colour rainbow serpents; mask making; finger-painting the Aboriginal flag; reading, talking and writing about different cultural issues. A favourite book of KS is “Kick It To Me” by Neridah McMullin. It is the story of Marn-Grook football an ancient Aboriginal game which Tom Wills learnt from the Djab Wurrung children. He later drew on these experiences to write the rules for what is now known as “Australian Rules Football”. (Go Swans!!) We have read, talked and written about Marn-Grook. Next, we will have a game of it ourselves! It is our Assembly in Week 10 on Thursday 30 th June at 1pm. We will be singing “Inanay Capuana” and performing with clapping sticks, maracas and shakers. We think you will enjoy it so please come along and join us. We are all looking forward to the NAIDOC celebrations and our Assembly. See you there! Cheers, KS and Mrs Speck.

Week 9 Term 2

Tuesday 21st June 2016

KS are learning how to speak Bundjalung. We say

Good Morning (Bugul Mulugum) and Good Afternoon

(Bugul Yowan) to Mrs Speck, Kim, each other and

everyone who visits us, every day. We’ll be learning

lots more too.

We have been busy getting ready for NAIDOC Day,

with dot painting boomerangs; earth colour rainbow

serpents; mask making; finger-painting the Aboriginal

flag; reading, talking and writing about different

cultural issues.

A favourite book of KS is “Kick It To Me” by Neridah

McMullin. It is the story of Marn-Grook football – an

ancient Aboriginal game – which Tom Wills learnt

from the Djab Wurrung children. He later drew on

these experiences to write the rules for what is now

known as “Australian Rules Football”. (Go Swans!!)

We have read, talked and written about Marn-Grook.

Next, we will have a game of it ourselves!

It is our Assembly in Week 10 on Thursday 30th June

at 1pm. We will be singing “Inanay Capuana” and

performing with clapping sticks, maracas and

shakers. We think you will enjoy it – so please come

along and join us.

We are all looking forward to the NAIDOC

celebrations and our Assembly. See you there!

Cheers, KS and Mrs Speck.

facilities and a chance to see computer coding at work with

the universities new robots.

AN EXCITING WEEK AHEAD

Big thanks to all the students who attended homework

centre this term. This is a great way to get a little extra

help with your work, and it is a great place to catch up

with computer programs such as study ladder and reading

eggs. Thanks to all the teachers and SLSOs who have

helped out this term. Thanks Mrs Wilder for coordinating.

Homework centre starts again next term.

The value we have been working on this week and will

be continuing next week is “Challenge.” We talk about

challenging ourselves to have a go at our work, to “Be

your own Boss” and to try and make the “next thing I do,

the best thing I do”. We talk about this at assemblies, in

our yarning circles and at appropriate points in time in

class. It would be great if parents could reinforce the idea

of “Challenge” at home so that the message is consistent.

Maybe even Challenge themselves to be a little more

helpful at home, to keep their rooms tidy, make the table,

help with the vacuuming.

Thanks again to Minjum Jarjum who have been running

their excellent “Kids in Mind” program again this term.

The students who attend have loved it and we hope that it

may continue next term.

We had some vandalism over the weekend when our

electronic sign was damaged. Fortunately, Harry

Armstrong was able to clean most of the spray off the

sign. This sign is for all the community, not just Casino

West, and we hope it can be treated as something to help

all of us. If you do have any messages regarding

community events, please come up and see Julie in the

office. We would be really glad to help spread the word.

Our Year 6 students today walked to the high school to

celebrate NAIDOC day with them.

NAIDOC Day is upon us. It will be held next Monday and

there will be plenty for everyone to enjoy. Please come

along and join us on what is always a fantastic event.

Thanks to the team for all your organisation. Hope to see

you there!

Regards Mr Michael Taylor, Principal.
