Hajj wishesThis years Hajj will see the largest influx of pilgrim visitors ever with an estimated 4 million arriving through the Kingdom’s ports.

At the same time summer is wind-ing down and the relaxation that

grips Jeddah comes to an end as the usual routine takes over again. Keeping that in mind we’ve got an even better issue of DJ waiting to be discovered so our readers can enjoy their life in Jeddah to the fullest.

With such a large influx of visitors coming to the Kingdom for their pilgrimage, we have compiled a list of quick picks of things we feel make Jeddah special.

Jeddah has been front and center on the luxury scene with the Kingdom’s very first boat show dedicated to high-end hi-tech yachts and boats attracting hundreds from around the city as well as international luxury brands. Events like these are quickly bringing Jeddah on the international stage as one of the fastest growing cities in the Kingdom.

We may not have a cityscape reaching into the clouds, but Saudi Arabia has a different kind of skyscraper. Rediscover Abha this month with the breathtaking vistas of the city in the sky.

Even with the recent publicity Jeddah has received we have not forgotten where we came from. With our special feature on Al-Tayebat City we highlight how pre-islamic Jeddah originated as a multicultural hub of yesteryear.

We wish all pilgrims safe travels and answers to their prayers we hope they will exercise caution with the current concerns about the swine flu in the region.

Laura Goddard: Abstract Art Comes to Serafi MegamallFilling the expansive exhibit hall at Serafi Megamall, roughly 15 abstract paintings made during a workshop taught by American abstract artist Laura Goddard; went on display as part of an event organized by the American Consulate under the “Art in the Embassies” cultural exchange program.

Her workshop comes at the same time, across the Gulf Saudi art is being displayed at a Christie’s auction in Dubai this month.Direct from her home in Massachusetts, Goddard is fresh out of teaching workshops in Dhahran and Bahrain to 35 teachers; a far cry from her usual class of two, she said with a smile and a chuckle, before coming to Jeddah three days ago. She said since there were so many teachers with only a day to teach, she wanted to

impart as much knowledge as possible to each group.

“I had to teach them how to begin a painting and how to really make it fun by not being stiff and not to be so representational, relax into the painting and learn to love the materials.”

Goddard said following her workshops in Bahrain the work produced in the workshop on the day of the event was by far the best she had seen, especially since the students

seemed somewhat reluctant at the beginning.Goddard herself, an established artist, has had work exhibited throughout the United States as well as outside and she claims to derive much of her inspiration from her time in Italy, Japan and her base of Western Massachusetts. “My start as an artist came when I went to Japan for a very quick trip. I went to this museum and there was a huge scroll with Japanese calligraphy, and I had no idea what it said but I thought it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I thought I have to make things more beautiful so that they can affect the people who walk in the same way I was affected,” she reminisced. She said she dismayed not to have seen much more calligraphy involving calligraphy since the Arabian Peninsula is most well known for its traditional Islamic calligraphy. Her work best described as visualized emotions, focuses on the use of a simplistic expression of geometric shapes and lines emphasizing on unorthodox tools and water-based paintings. Part of her instruction involves those very same tools, from gilding,

semi-precious gold-leaf and charcoal mixed with water are not concepts regularly used in Kingdom art so having Goddard demonstrate these forms was a treat to Jeddah’s art scene. What she said she tries to teach mostly is how to make a painting an entity on its own and approach art “with much less fear and to get rid of some of the restrictive training that keeps so many paintings looking the same.” In essence moving to the most basic principle of art as a form of self-expression.With the parallel walls of the workshop art on display, the wide variety of techniques she teaches from different watercolors to acrylics and a variety of other methods, become quickly clear. Goddard confessed to not having had enough time to really absorb more of the local art because of her schedule teaching classes and traveling. The Consulate had organized a visit on Monday to the Safia Binzagr Museum which she said was a real treat to see.“She’s an amazing painter; it was really a treat to see this woman’s perspective, her entire body of work,” she remarked. She added that art seemed to be flourishing in the kingdom, but stressed that “it needed to have more attention drawn to it.” Moving to Riyadh next as part of the next leg of her journey across Saudi, where she will teach several graduate students at Queen

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS CONFERENCE: “One of the most important factors about arthritis is for patients to be aware of their condition,” said Dr. Josef S. Smolen, Chairman of the Rheumatology division at the Medical University of Vienna at a conference held at the Jeddah Hilton on Oct. 4. The conference featured four doctors, notably Smolen and Associate Professor of Medicine also at the Medical University of Vienna, Dr. Daniel Aletaha, and two doctors from Saudi Arabia. Rheumatoid Arthritis is characterized as an autoimmune response by the body. No statistics exist for the number of cases in the Kingdom. Smolen said the number may be equal to the West (1 in 100).Rheumatoid Arthritis is particularly dangerous to individuals because the loss of mobility can mean the loss of employment, however the doctors said that a correlation between an increased in standards of living contributed to a decrease in the prevalence of the disease. The key Smolen said was early detection. Early detection cannot lead to a cure but it can help “prevent the worst outcome,” because if the disease goes unchecked, then it can potentially lead to loss of mobility and heart complications.

JUFFALI LAUNCHES 2010 S-CLASS MERCEDES-BENZ: The flagship for Mercedes-Benz is back as the best discreet limo in the world. In Jeddah on Oct. 7 Juffali released the new S-Class to its usual fanfare of laser light shows and smoke machines.

For car lovers there is a wide range of things to love about cars, but the S-Class redefines isolation while still being a stylish addition to the Mercedes fleet. The launch also was privy to the very first Mercedes hybrid using a lithium-ion battery pack. This S-Class is indisguishable from its petrol-powered cousins, aside from the hybrid badges

scattered around the car. Safi Kobaisi, general manager for Juffali Automotive Co. said, “The first series production hybrid car exemplifies Mercedes-Benz’s long-standing development strategy geared towards sustainability, with its clearly defined aim of producing economical and environment-friendly premium cars without compromising on safety, comfort and superior performance.”

The S-400 produces the lowest emission levels worldwide for a vehicle of its class at 7.9 liters per 100 km creating 186 grams per kilometer.

DUBAI WORLD TRADE CENTER’S INAUGURAL SAUDI BOAT SHOW:Jeddah was the host to the first ever international boat exhibition designed to boost domestic tourism and give international companies a platform to showcase their boating related products.

The show was packed to the brim with everything about boats; from the newest fishing lures to the latest Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to the best in hi-tech fishing and speed boats. Under the patronage of the Governor of Makkah region, Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, and Chairman of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities (SCT), Prince Sultan Bin Salman; the boat show was the quintessential show for boating in the Kingdom this year.

Held at the Al-Furusaya Marina and Yacht Club (near the Intercontinental Hotel in Al-Hamra district), the boat show featured over 80 participating companies from 13 countries across a 5000 sq m marina with more than 40 boats on display. Saudi Arabia’s coastline is set to change radically

in the next few years, with one of the world’s longest coastlines to be expanded by another 21km.

With projects like the King Abdullah Economic City geared to changing the landscape, it’s no surprise that an additional 11km of boardwalks and sea lagoons are in the process of being built. Another 1km of natural beach and five yacht clubs are being built as well.

The program was organized by the Dubai World Trade Center; as well as key partners like Al-Ahlam Marine Tourism Group and endorsements from the SCT and support from the Islamic Ports of Jeddah, the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce, Jeddah Civil Defense, Jeddah Coast Guard, Jeddah Municipality, Jeddah Police and the Jeddah Port Customs Authority and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On the sidelines of the boat show, the first ever conference dedicated to the industries of boating, diving and marine tourism in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia covered topics from fishing in the Red Sea to Saudi import regulations.

SAUDI COMPANIES AND SDDA INITIATE CAMPAIGN FOR DRIVER SAFETY : Having created awareness on the tragic consequences of speeding earlier in the year, concerned Saudi companies and the Safra Defensive Driving Academy (SDDA) now seek to warn drivers of the danger of using a cell phone while behind the wheel.

“Saudi Arabia was ranked first world-wide in regards to car accidents in 2008, and 35th for the number of cell phone subscriptions. These figures are alarming when correlated.” stated Engineer Yousef Abdul Jawad, Senior Marketing Officer of Hidada, one of SDDA’s partners. “Simply put; using a cell phone while driving is dangerous, yet it is not uncommon to see motorists on their cell phone.” He continued. “The community needs to understand that a phone call is not worth the risk.” Research conducted by an American entity reveals that cell phone conversations reduce a driver’s peripheral vision which

contributes to a slower response time should there be a need to avoid mishaps. Since its inception in November 2008, SDDA has had more than 5,000 attendees of both genders and from various backgrounds. SDDA already stands to become one of the leading defensive driving schools in the world, given its success in the last year. The academy expects to attract 30,000 attendees in 2010.

A day spent exploring old mud-brick villages, breathing refreshing mountain air, absorbing the rich cultural heritage, and taking cable-car rides in Abha are just some of the experiences that make this capital city of the Asir province one of Saudi Arabia’s must-visit places; especially in summertime when the Abha Festival is in full bloom.

Located at 2.2km above sea level, Abha enjoys a mild climate throughout the year while rain drenches its fertile soil, contribut-ing to the scenic beauty of the area. Not just

a haven of ancient traditions and heritage sites, Abha’s modern infrastructure develop-ment over the past 20 years has allowed it to progress by leaps and bounds in agricul-

ture and tourism; the latter seeing a boom in recent years. An airport allows for direct flights from the major cities of Riyadh, Jed-dah, and Dhahran while a highway links the city to most of the other major cities in the country. Hotel accommodations include five-star hotels, regular motels and comfy villas and apartments that are available for rent.

Abha is home to the highest peak in Saudi Arabia, Jabal Al-Sooda (Black Mountain) at

3.3km high. The mountain has become the highlight of any visit here as its outlook de-livers a breathtaking view of the city down below. The origin of its name is a mystery, but locals believe the name originates from the dark Araar trees that grow all over it and the dark clouds that loom above it.

In and around the city, four cable-car net-works also provide a bird’s eye view of the landscape and can be found in Al-Sooda,

Al-Habala, New Abha, and Lake Saad; a picturesque lake, surrounded by rolling hills on both sides. The Asir National Park, set up in 1976 and comprising of 450,000 hectares of land and sea, has been instrumental in promoting the enchanting the beauty of Abha and the rest of the province as a whole. The misty mountains that harbor dense, pristine forests and the variety of flora and fauna within them, are now protected from deforestation. Bird watching, hiking and mountain climb-ing are just some of the activities that can be indulged in at the park.An excursion to the old villages that dot the outskirts of Abha, where homes made of mud and stones date back to 300 years, is a treat for history buffs. The unique architec-ture of these homes is a big pull for tourists and learning about their construction fromthe local guide makes for a fascinating his-tory lesson. Farther away from these “mud villages”, a watering hole for various species of birds exists at the Wadi Mahalah which is about 10km outside the city. Apart from all the great attractions, it is the people of Abha that really shine because of their poetic and artistic nature. A conversation with the friendly locals is interesting albeit flowery no matter what one talks about; from the sunrise and the hills to the food and even clothing, everything is brought to life through poignant words.

The women in Abha wear a black dress with intricate embroidery known as the Abha thobe. A similar hat worn by the men is utitlized in sum-mer. Jewelry is an essential part of any woman’s get-up and it is the same in Abha except that the amount of jewelry worn is also an indicator of the woman’s social status. A wealthy woman will wear lots of jewelry and thus consequently dowries in this region are higher than anywhere else. A burgu veils the face of the women here; signifying modesty and a deep rooted Islamic custom.

Abha was referred to as the land of spices and fragrances by the ancient Egyptians and over time it has become more than that; it is a land of humble people and unforgettable sights.

City A Visit to

Al-Tayibat

Arts &Entertainment

DESTINATION JEDDAH 21

Hidden in the heart of the busy Al-Faisaliah district, Al-Tayibat functions as a museum housed inside a 300 room palace of the late Sheikh Abdul Rauf Khalil; a merchant who wanted to share the rich history of the region by scattering museums around Jeddah.

Al-Tayibat City museum gives visitors an insight into the traditional life of the country over a century and several exhibits feature items collected over a period of a decade by Khalil himself. From the moment you enter your eyes are drawn to the simple, yet beautiful Hijazi architecture.

The buildings inside the complex are newer than those in Al-Balad district, but the design remains true to its 300 year old architectural roots by using Red Sea coral blocks and limestone.

Exploring the complex without a guide is possible, but it is advisable to divide your visit into two days

Traditional home of old DammamInterior of the museum leading to different wings

because the entire complex is over 10,000 sq. meters in total. Inside the museum, you are bound to come face to face with a bewildering amount of information. With over 2,000 sq. meters of wall space covered in pictures, detailed explanations, and monuments; 18 wings encompassing the breadth of the human civilization; and around 60,000 items of historical significance from all over the Middle-East, there is anything but a lack of information.

The museum is essentially several smaller museums rolled into one. It is pleasant to see an organized flow of displays and exhibits throughout the museum, enabling you to take in everything without having a sensory overload.

Of the many wings, the most fascinating was one with rooms showcasing life as it was in the past century from every region of Saudi Arabia. From the humble abode of an Eastern Province fisherman to the vibrant room of a bride-to-be from Abha, the attention to detail is exquisite.

Mauro Zoppini: Creating a jewelry brand forged in steel

Having become the latest fashion statement in recent times, stainless steel jewelry has come a long way in attracting the attention of jewelry lovers everywhere including Hollywood celebrities. If one brand is to be given credit in making stainless steel jewelry fashionable, then it would be the Italian brand Zoppini. It was Mauro Zoppini, President and Executive Sales Manager of MPF Group that owns the Zoppini brand, who identified the pulse of the younger generation and introduced the “Feeling” collection in 1997; it went on to become a best-seller for the company amongst all Zoppini branded items at the time. Mauro Zoppini spoke to Destination Jeddah on his first ever visit to the Kingdom.

Discussing the four Zoppini brandsThe great thing about having a family run business is that we create and develop jewelry with a passion. Our brands each have a target group and price and each has a different fashion concept behind it. The brands include Manuel.Zed, for the hip and determined young people; Makuti, which is sophisticated and original high-quality jewelry; Zable, casual bracelets and necklaces; and Zoppini which has now become an extensive collection of contemporary jewelry for any occasion.

Zoppini is the most important of the four brands as it is trendier and is made from lots of different materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum. We launch new collections three times a year in the months of January, May and September. Incidentally, the Zoppini Stores in Jeddah are stocked with our latest collections.

Public reaction to Zoppini jewelryIt is great to see people be so interested in our trendy jewelry which is what I saw at the Zoppini kiosk that recently opened in

instrumental in attracting people because we start from fifty riyals and go up to a thousand riyals or more.

The vision of MPF Group in the KingdomWe want to build the brand name in KSA which has just only taken hold. Our aim is to have five to six stores here in Jeddah and then expand to other cities like Riyadh. We want to cover the country as best as we can, but we don’t want to have any substandard locations for our Zoppini Stores. So, to search for the right location is going to take time and we will patiently wait for such locations to become available.

Thoughts about the Kingdom and JeddahHonestly, I have not seen much of the country or Jeddah, since I have just arrived from Hong Kong today and will be leaving for Italy tomorrow. I was just waiting for our first opening in Saudi Arabia to come and visit; I’m surprised by the store locations which are superb and the malls they are located inside are just beautiful. Jeddah is a city of malls. Even in Milan or Rome we don’t have such big malls, such luxurious ones. I do hope to return in the near future though.

Roshana Mall. It is something new for them. The classic jewelry with precious stones, like diamonds and rubies, haves always been around and will remain, but our focus is to create something fresh, something that separates us from traditional jewelry and gives people a new outlook in fashion; especially the younger people.

Stainless steel and Zoppini philosophySteel is not only indestructible but, the way we work with it in our designs, gives it a luster that is magnificent to behold. We are using a 316L grade stainless steel alloy, which has superior corrosion resistance and

is non-allergic. We are also able to combine steel and gold which results in dramatic jewelry designs. Even if most of our designs are not 18k gold or silver, the finishing of our stainless steel jewelry is what really makes it stand out.

Recession and Zoppini Stores in KSAAs you know that the economic situation around the world these days is not so great. Now may not be the perfect time for businesses, but we have been lucky because people here are fascinated by our jewelry and there is genuine interest in our products. The prices of our jewelry have also been

The Ear Pressure Equalizer is as small as a mobile phone and weighs just 45g. It works by suck-ing air from the outer ear canal and creating a slight vacuum which then gently pushes the eardrum back into its original position. Using the equalizer is easy; simply close the ear canal with the equalizer, briefly press the yellow membrane and you are done. No matter how strongly you press, the built-in safety vent will prevent the build-up of too much pressure. Available proidee.co.ukPrice: SR264

Officine Panerai joins Saudi Boat Show

Starting this month, Armani Exchange (operated by Rubaiyat) will be offering an exclusive rangeof jewelry featuring more than meets the eye.

The sleek and discreet luxury-infused dog tags hide a 1GB USB stick with an exclusive track by Tiesto titled “Reason to Believe.”

“The track is not available anywhere online, not even on Tiesto’s Web Site,” said Nader Sinno, operations manager for Armani Exchange for Saudi Arabia. “It was mixed exclusively for Armani Exchange customers this month.” But before you rush out to Rubaiyat to try and pick it up, be warned, the dog tags are part of a limited offer, which will only last as long as supplies do.

Armani Exchange Goes Tech with Dog Tags

Woof Woof:

With purchases totaling over SR1500 in one-visit customers can qualify to receive the free gift while supplies last. The offer is available in dedicated Armani Exchange stores Kingdom-wide but the stock is limited. This offer coincides with the opening of Gucci’s largest dedicated store in Saudi Arabia this month. The floor space totals 315m sq, giving customers more room for retail therapy.

Luxury watchmaker Officine Panerai joined the Saudi Boat Show as a supporting partner to reinforce its connection with luxury connoisseurs and mariners who share a deep appreciation for the sea.

“The show is set to attract a vast number of marine enthusiasts and sea lovers,” said Officine Panerai CEO, Angelo Bonati in a statement. “Therefore it represents a great opportunity for Panerai to share our passion for the sea and showcase our innovative and timeless creations.”

The company recently launched two new Panerai’s association to the show is a natural extension of the brand’s rich heritage. In

the 1930’s Officine Panerai became supplier to the Italian Navy of sophisticated, high precision devices for underwater military use. Panerai instruments were immediately distinguished due to their exceptional characteristics exploiting a degree of technology that at the time was groundbreaking. Amongst the multitudes of ideas and instruments realized, a special range of watches was created specifically designed for use in extreme and highly risky conditions.

SIGHT-SEEING

Al-Balad (old Jeddah) Jeddah oldest and most photogenic location is home to several museums, hidden away eateries and the best bargains in town on whatever you need from toys to electronics to oud.

Alawy Market Flanked on both sides by more modern interpretations of shops which lined the streets centuries ago, the souk is a fusion of old and new worlds; fascinating yet brimming with energy. Despite its obvious commercial purpose, Souk Al-Alawi and the collection of other souks in the area are all priceless historical and cultural assets.

Khaskeyya MarketLocated in the heart of Old Jeddah, visitors literally turn a corner and find themselves in the middle of this lively market. Throngs of shoppers of a dozen different nationalities stroll the small streets, pausing to admire one of the many brightly lit shop windows. The Al-Khaskeyya market embodies the diversity of Jeddah.

Nassief houseRestored in 1990 by the Jeddah Historical Area Preservation Department (JHAPD) Beit Nassief forms the center of Souk Alawi and houses several treasures from Jeddah’s past including a 700-year-old flag mast and a fifteenth century cannon. Beit Nassief currently acts as a cultural center and is one of the many historical treats hidden in Balad.

RED SEA COAST

South Corniche (Flamingos)Take a trip to the South and just see how much wildlife you can encounter. A day long outing might just trigger a lifetime hobby of bird watching. There’s 528 recorded species of birds, 11 of which are native to the Arabian Peninsula along with 133 species which breed here and 395 migratory species. One of the better places is just south of the King Fahd Naval Base where you’ll most likely encounter Greater Flamingos.

Boats and cruisingJeddahwis are lucky to be able to enjoy one of the best bodies of water in the world. What better way to enjoy the Red Sea and its inlets through boat trips up and down the Obhur creek as well as day long boat trips outside of the immediate Jeddah area.

Corniche (picnics, walking, cruising by car)Despite the South Corniche having an abundance of wildlife the North is relatively more quiet. Perfect for a long walk or a quiet seaside picnic or even just a slow cruise down the coast, the most Northern part of Jeddah is just as beautiful as the Southern most tip.

Snorkeling and divingThe Red Sea is known for its world-class diving and is considered a snorkeler’s paradise. Not too far away from Jeddah are just several of the prized scuba diving/snorkeling locations and shipwrecks.

DINING

Al-BaikShining as one of the few examples of a western concept modified for the local market, Al-Baik has been a success since the early 80’s and is famous for its chicken and shrimp meals. From its creamy cocktail sauce to its rich and flavor packed chicken nuggets to its chicken meals, Al-Baik leaves customers calling, quite literally, for more.

ByblosPaying homage to the Lebanese city of Jubayl which is located on the sparkling Mediterranean coast, Byblos brings to Jeddah the traditional Lebanese cuisine that is loved the world over. The restaurant is housed in a contemporary building on Corniche Road. Family and single sections give everyone the chance to savor Lebanesefood in a modern setting.

TokiThe very unassuming exterior would fool you into thinking that Toki was just another office building. Once inside, that reality sharply changes to linen covered tables, chandeliers, arabesque pillars and glass tabletops throughout. With some of the most uniquely delicious Chinese food, Toki is a must for the discriminating palette.

Al-NakheelOne of the most popular restaurants for both expats and locals, Al-Nakheel is one of the better spots in town to relax, smoke sheesha, watch a football match, or to just have a chat. Located on the Corniche after Shalaal Theme Park, Al-Nakheel has an expansive outdoor seating area as well as covered indoor area (one for families and one for singles) boosted by a wide variety of sheesha flavors to choose from.

Khayyyat Center is the quintessential one stop shop for the top end of luxury items. Its outdoor courtyard acts as an anchor between the store interiors packed to the brim with the best brands from NY to London.

Fish & Ships The Red Sea has no shortage of mysteries in addition to some of the best diving locations around the world. These mysteries culminated in ships running aground on coral reefs, which have been laying undisturbed for decades; attracting marine life from all over the Red Sea and giving a new life to these hulking behemoths.

Red SeaCoast

By Hans Sjoeholm

As divers progress in their training, wreck exploration may become something they want to explore from the mangled remains to a man-made ecosystem. Although beautiful to look at, these wrecks are still danger-ous, so buoyancy control is crucial to avoid damaging the decaying wreck; the homes of its new crew and yourself.

Jeddah divers are spoiled for choice. With so many navigation errors made over its shallow waters coupled with severe weather conditions and equipment failures, the Red Sea is littered with wrecks all within a short distance. Naming and chronicling the char-acteristics and histories of Jeddah’s wrecks would require its own publication, but here is a brief review of the most accessible and popular Jeddah shipwrecks.

Cable Wreck:Located off the northwest of Two Tower Reef (Abu Tayr reef), it rests on its left (port) side on coral sand 24m deep. The top of the wreck is accessible at 17m. Although small, it is fairly intact and, if the currents are not severe, swimming around is relative-ly easy. Hundreds of blue-striped snappers have taken refuge in the bow of the ship, between mooring ropes and scattered cargo pipes and (you guessed it) cables. Napoleon fish and great Jacks are sometimes sited out in the blue, and huge schools of Fusiliers are often seen feeding around this wreck.

The ship’s mast and stern section are popular photo subjects. On calm days, this wreck can be visited by divers of all experience levels, but it can become an advanced dive if the current is strong.

Hundreds of blue-striped snappers (Lat. Lutjanis kasmira) have taken refuge in the bow of the ship, between mooring ropes and scattered cargo pipes and cables.

DESTINATION JEDDAH52

Ann Ann Wreck:The largest and most challenging shipwreck that requires a stringent dive plan to be enjoyed safely. On certain days this loca-tion is only suitable for experienced divers due to the strong currents and big build-up of waves. The wreck is standing upright facing East with the bow firmly plowed into the reef. The stern section is spectacular to visit with its huge rudder ornamented with shellfish and enormous propeller decorated with soft coral. Being near the bottom at a depth of 28m is a dreamlike experience; watching a waterfall in reverse when the ex-halation bubbles rapidly ascend towards the distant surface along the cup coral encrusted hull. Around the sandy bottom you may see blue-striped snappers, blue spotted stingrays, dog tooth tunas and, occasionally, Whitetip sharks.

With a recently enforced No Scuba Spear Fishing rule in effect, hopefully the oft killed Napoleon fish and Groupers will return to the wreck. The rear section of the wreck, resting at 14m, is still full of winches and machinery often frequented by goatfish, broom tailed filefish, coral groupers and ever

so territorial Sohal surgeonfish. Despite its obvious size, the wreck is badly broken up so exercise caution.

Chicken Wreck:Suitable for novice divers and since it is sandwiched between adjacent reefs, the current remains fairly calm all year round. The deepest point of this dive site is 22m at the stern of the wreck. The front (the bow) is pointing towards the reef and the ship is resting on its port side. The rail of the ship is intact and is decorated with hard coral. There are plenty of Pixie Hawkfish and some pipefish swimming around on the flank facing the surface. The cargo holds of the ship still have a few plastic bags stuffed with once frozen chicken. Bringing these bags to the surface would release smells in the air that would not help you make new friends.

Underwater videographer Michelle McBride gives the 'okay' sign through a porthole of the Ann Ann wreck.

The cargo holds still have a few plastic bags stuffed with once frozen chicken.

Please respect our wrecks and do not remove any items or parts from them. Also, for your safety, do not attempt wreck penetration as it is a high risk activity that requires special-ized equipment, training and supervision.

Marble Wreck:

A shallow water wreck suitable for novice divers sits at 18m at its deepest point, it is possible to cruise around at 8-12m depth. The Red Sea has had a devastating affect

on this wreck quite literally ripping it apart; the left (port) sections have completely collapsed scattering marble everywhere. Lionfish can usually be found guarding the rear close to a ladder decorated with coral. Pay attention to the masts which are often adorned with oysters and acropora coral.

Be a reef’s friend but also keep yourself safe:1. Watch out for fishing lines that pose an entanglement risk.

2. Avoid swimming into or under the wreck as they are aging and it can be difficult to ascertain when they might collapse.

3. It is advisable to be up-to-date with your tetanus vaccinations as sharp edges on wrecks are usually rusty.

4. Never touch the wrecks since many wrecks are covered with fire sponge, hydroids, shellfish, and edges of broken up wreck parts.

* Boat operators would be well advised to take precautions by using existing mooring ropes in order to moor at the dive site rather than dropping their anchors on the wrecks which is harmful to marine life and compromises the very wreck that is being visited.

The shallow Marble wreck, once breaking the surface, is heavily damaged and in some places ripped apart by the sea currents, leaving swimthroughs for divers.

Teayana: Tea and dining wrapped into one

It’s hard to live in Jeddah and not revisit the same coffee shops and restaurants on a regular basis. Teayana is one of those favorite repeats for many Jeddahwis with its pages and pages of every variety of tea imaginable alongside its rich menu.

Location: Andalus st. North Corniche: Atallah Center - Rawdah st. : infront of Khaledeya soukTel: +966-2-6062646

With its bright and vibrant color scheme Teayana at the get-go is soothing to the senses.

Bright greens and reds and wood paneled entrance quickly creates an ambiance of a restaurant that knows what its doing.

One of the interesting characteristics at Teayana is when you order a teapot full of whatever you choose, a combination of

sand dials will run out when your chosen tea is cool enough to drink. Coupled with a wide variety of sandwich’s as well an executive meal option including one salad, a sandwich and a selection of teas Teayana is both the perfect business lunch spot as well as a relaxing dining out spot.

Palm Beach:Every city has a place or two which gives the cityscape its uniquenes; Los Angeles has the famed In and Out Burger; and Jeddah has Al-Baik and Palm Beach Restaurant. Nowadays Palm Beach may not be nearly as iconic as Al-Baik, but it is still just as famous for its wide-ranging menu and mouth-watering shawarmas. While Al-Baik is fast food, Palm Beach is more of a sit-down experience with a much more expansive menu (namely it has more than 3 varieties of cuisine). The menu is a fusion of East meets West with items ranging from grilled pigeon to an old fashioned steak. The usual Arabian favorites like hummus and tabouleh are there with others as well. Single dishes as well as meal platters are available, which are more value for your money since the portions are relatively larger. An average meal at Palm Beach would cost you roughly SR40; this includes a soup, a main course and a dessert.

Every Thursday an open buffet from 8 PM and every Friday from 2 PM is available but the quality of the food is somewhat lackluster and not worth the SR80. What is most surprising about this place is regardless of what you order, a drink is always factored into the price of the meal. Offering flexibility of having a carbonated drink or a juice, there’s plenty to choose from at Palm Beach and plenty of taste to savor.

KING OF FALAFIL: Located near to one other falafel shop that claims to be more popular and of better lineage, this falafel shop already has its loyal subjects who have nothing but praise for its sandwiches. But does it really deserve the title of king? We found out one afternoon. Adding to Jeddah’s diverse regional cuisine, the shop was established in 1980 and was named Cafeteria Jamal, for its owner. The name was changed 14 years ago when customers would occasionally come up to Jamal and tell him the falafel served at his shop was the king of all falafels. The success garnered by the shop is not only from the tasty falafels, but the dedicated team of falafel cooks, his viziers more like, that Jamal has managed to hold on to for the past two decades. The rusty metal grate is rolled off the door at 8 AM just in time for breakfast and then is shut again by 1 PM. The shutter goes up again at 5 PM and remains open un-til midnight. Inside the fairly small shop is a French fries station next to the entrance and a cashier’s counter on the other side. But the prize of the shop is behind a large glass counter where fried chick pea balls, pickles, crisp fries and fresh, julienned salad in tahina come together inside aromatic pita bread or khubz. How does it taste? Royally delicious and it’s cheap; the regular sandwich is only SR3 while adding hummus to the sandwich takes the cost up by a riyal.Jeddah is a haven for falafels originating from other countries in the region and the moniker of king is cer-tainly not an easy one to hand out. But the quality and consistency of ingredients does catapult it to the best of the best falafel shops out there.

Pizza Napoli: Inside its salmon colored walls and very unassuming exterior in Khaledeya district sits Pizza Napoli, one of the many ambassadors for westernized traditional Italian food.

With the usual suspects of pastas and sandwiches Pizza Napoli, offers the usual affair of Italian goodies. Easily imagined being made by a large Italian woman resembling Super Mario pounding some dough while shouting obscenities to her workers all the while exclaiming, “Mama Mia,” under her breath.

Clearly this isn’t the case but the food brought out by the staff has an air of authenticity to it unavailable in other restaurants.

Large LCD screens usually tuned to movie channels the ambiance although simplistic in design fulfills its purpose.

With a family section overlooking Rawdah st. the cascading light from the entrance during the day gives the entire place a very calm feeling added to its earthen colored walls

it gives off an old fashioned ‘ristaurante’ feeling back in a small town in Italy.

With a medium pizza easily feeding two, and pastas brought piping hot Pizza Napoli is not for the discerning Italian gourmet; but for the rest of us it is one of the better pizza places for both singles and a family to enjoy.

Taste with a capital Q

While not offering anything really new in concept, the quality of the ingredients is something we’ve been anticipating for quite some time. The American chain, famous for its chunky meats and rich sauces, brings its trademark to Jeddah and Thuwal (one branch serves KAUST exclusively).Quiznos has a bit of everything for everyone but caters mostly to the informal quick eater; still delivering a mouthful of taste. Quiznos attitude to eating is about having a little fun and that much is clear by its Web Site.“You can’t fake quality. If you want mystery, go to the public library,” reads the Quiznos Web Site. With everything from bread bowls (soup in a bowl made of bread) to thick chunky wedges to the Quiznos equivalent of a shawarma (Sammies), there’s flavor busting out of every loaf bread at Quiznos.

Wakame: Sushi on the go

Wakame prides itself for being passionate about sushi and that much is apparent in both their preparation as well as their uncompromised taste. Wakame brings elements of more traditional sushi often missed out on by many sushi restaurants in Jeddah – such as the Maki sushi resembling a rice club sandwich.

Location: Rawdah st., opposite Life StoreTel: +966-2-668200

Located on Rawdah st., the small cozy takeaway restaurant is trendy; having a modern sushi bar and an open kitchen so the customers can see the preparation. The menu includes seafood salads along with Tempura, Sashimi, Sushi, Maki, Temaki, and Club Maki; a Wakame exclusive. You can try a bit of everything if you are new to sushi or want to overwhelm your taste buds with different flavors. Our recommended items on the menu at Wakame are the Sakaran Tempura and the California Maki. White fish coated in tempura batter, deep fried and served with soy sauce makes an excellent Sakaran Tempura. The most popular sushi roll in the world, the California Maki consists of prawn, crab stick, wasabi mayo, wasabi tobiko and avocado which give these rolls a unique taste that is Wakame’s own. Apart from the Japanese fare, the restaurant also serves fried chicken and prawns for anyone who is not a fan of sushi. Amongst Jeddah’s growing number of places vying for the sushi enthusiast’s attention, Wakame has become one of the top sushi restaurants in a short span of time, thanks to their innovative vision and dedication to quality. The prices vary from SR20 to SR40 for the assortment of food on offer and it is without a doubt worth every riyal if you want to savor authentic, delectable sushi in this port city.

Its colorful and geometric décor radiates a modern casual feeling, making it an ideal place for a night out or a business meeting. Coupled with an intelligently designed restaurant; with three different floors offering different kinds of dining.Balsamico Too’s food is also up to a high standard and has been a DJ favorite for some time now.

The third floor terrace deserves high praise because it offers something different for customers. With a panoramic view of Malek road and the distant Rosewood and Corniche nightlife, the terrace is ideal for sharing some sheesha or for having a light meal in the space now closed off with glass windows all around. A major problem is the sheesha service though. Although the sheesha is of good quality the experience is damaged by lousy service with coals taking forever to be replaced.

Balsamico Too loses major points on service. Given how popular the restaurant there is always a longer wait than necessary with food, rarely incorrect orders reach tables or customers have to ask several times where their food has gone to?

Luckily Balsamico has a saving grace: the staff are always friendly, polite and honest about what is happening. Not only that, but their deserts (chocolate fondant and sticky date cake) are one of the best in town. Balsamico Too outshines the competition by being polite and honest about customers want.

About a year ago the popular lounge/restaurant Balsamico expanded to a Malek Road branch, which has possibly become more popular than its predecessor.

Jan Burger: A simple burger for a not so simple town

Location: Hera’a st. across from the carpet souk.Tel: +966-2-6550219 / +966-2-6924679

Paying just SR7 for a burger isn’t common in a town of expensive malls and during times of inflation. Calling Jan Burger the recession burger just wouldn’t be fair even though it fits the bill.

Its compact, prepared for transport in a paper holder after you order, its cheap and tastes great. Jan Burger is anything but a recession burger.

Rich with taste and juicy meat paddies topped off with lettuce and cheese the burgers are truly some of the best in town.

The menu has other typo filled meals like shrimp and chicken burgers but they pale in comparison to the mantle of Jan Burger.

With a newly designed interior featuring a diner-like seating area, as opposed to the plastic chairs and tables from before this Hera’a eatery is something everyone should enjoy at least once.

Ruby Tuesday: Biting into AmericanaJeddah has no shortage of restaurants that bring big burgers along with big taste and Ruby Tuesdays is no exception to that rule. While attempting to infuse fast-food style dining with a finer dining experience mostly in the same vein as Chili’s does, Ruby Tuesday is different just with the caliber of the food it offers. Large steaks, large burgers and chunks of fries Ruby’s brings the same kind of dining you could associate with the glory days of Americana.

Location: Next to Manhattan Fish Market on Andalus st.Tel: +966-2-6501999

Not really for the calorie conscious, Ruby Tuesday delivers on big taste and a wholly satisfying experience. With friendly-staff and well-presented food, appetite willing, will make your growling stomach growl that much louder.

The Web Site read “Ruby Tuesday is driven by uncompromising freshness and quality and gracious hospitality,” which is true in every sense of the term. The staff are by

far the most attentive and most helpful in any restaurant of its kind which makes the difference in a dining experience despite the quality of the food. Ruby Tuesday’s holds true to its promise even if the burgers are a bit larger than life themselves, it’s an experience fit for the whole family and the occasional business lunch.

Master Swiss Chocolatier started in a small pastry shop on Markt-gasse in Zurich’s old town in 1845. Confectioner David Sprüngli-Schwarz and his 29 year old son Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, who also trained to be a confectioner, dared to do something new: they decided to make chocolate.

In particular and in keeping with the new fashion that came from Italy – solid bars – just like Fran-çois-Louis Cailler in Vevey and Philippe Suchard in Neuchâtel had already done.

From its humble beginnings 164 years ago, Lindt chocolate is now produced in six production sites across Europe, two in the US and is distributed on four continents in over 100 countries. The Lindt master chocolatiers design every piece with pas-sion from the finest ingredients to ensure the rich taste and texture in every bite.

With different pralines designed to taste best with different types of coffee, Lindt spares no effort in working to create the best taste for everyone. From a box of rich pralines to chocolate shells filled with a creamy delicious center, every Lindt creation is a testament to chocolate perfection.

Eid Al-Adha Around the Middle-EastA celebration with roots in the near sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) son Ismael, Eid Al-Adha, also known as the Greater Eid and the Festival of Sacrifice; it has become a glorious festival for Muslims all around the world. Taking place after the culmination of the annual Hajj, the festival is the second most significant in the Islamic Hijrah calendar. Even though the traditions and the day’s activities are similar from region to region, the local population of the different countries add a unique flavor to their Eid Al-Adha. Here we cover a few Middle-Eastern countries and how they commemorate the Festival of Sacrifice.

ALGERIA:

In anticipation of Eid, a variety of sweets and cookies are made and new clothes are bought for everyone in the household. Centuries old souks become alive with people as the shopping continues well into the night. The next morning, the Eid prayer is performed in a grand open space in every city followed by the slaughtering of a sacrifical animal. The preparation of dishes like mechoui (steamed lamb) starts as many meat intensive dishes are cooked over the course of the three days festival.

Much of the Algerian population prefer to use every part of the sacrificed animal is used. The tail, intestines, head, and feet of the animal are used in specially made dishes. Children take to the streets throughout the day, greeting adults and collecting sweets from them.

EGYPT :

Setting their own tradition when it comes to Eid Al-Adha, many Egyptians decorate their homes with paintings depicting the Kaa’ba and the Prophet’s (pbuh) Mosque signifying that one of their family members has traveled to perform Hajj. Something else that marks the occasion of Eid Al-Adha in parts of Egypt is a bloody handprint on the door of homes, symbolizing the slaughter of a sheep by the household. Swings and small Ferris wheels decorated with colorful paper fill the streets as neighborhoods become playgrounds for children. The animal sacrifice takes place at home right after the morning Eid prayer. Lunch is an all traditional fare and includes mumbaar; which is cow stomach filled with rice and meat, and fata, made from pastry, dried bread and minced meat and soaked in animal trotters gravy.

YEMEN:

Days before Eid arrives, marketplaces in Sanaa and other cities and towns in the country become a flurry of activity; people throng shops and fight for an inch of walking space on the footpaths. Yemenis traditionally fast the day before Eid, slowing down life for a day; in comparison to the next few days when streets are filled with the sounds of celebration; traditional drums, excited children, and fireworks. Wearing newly made clothes, families meet to offer Eid prayer before the men slaughter the sacrificial animal. The arduous task of dividing the meat and placing it in bags is made easier with the festive mood in full swing. Going door to door, the children deliver little packets of meat to neighbors and to the needy who roam the streets.

JORDAN:

Heralding the arrival of Eid Al-Adha in Jordan, wooden sign posts with details of where sacrificial animals are available spring up throughout the city, giving residents a wide range of choice and bargaining power. After the Eid prayer, families visit graveyards to pay their respects to the deceased before the sacrifice takes place. Butchers walk the streets offering their services while children take the sacrificial animal for one last walk around the neighborhood. The animal, once slaughtered, is divided into pieces and most of it is given away to neighbors and the poor. The main meal of the day is mansaf, which is lamb cooked in dried yogurt served on a bed of rice. For the children, Eid Al-Adha becomes a day of collecting candies and gifts from family and friends.

LIBYA:

Eid Al-Adha is celebrated in Libya like anywhere else in the region. Elders of the house, usually grandmothers, apply kohl to the eyes of the sheep the night before the day of sacrifice and burn incense all around the home.

The night before Eid is spent praying for peace and prosperity and for happiness for all families.

The festivities begin once the animal has been sacrificed which takes place soon after Eid prayer. It is then time for distribution of the meat and many families begin the process of dehydrating the meat by rubbing salt into it and hanging it to dry.

Everyone looks forward to a special meal in the form of the bazin, the Libyan national dish, especially cooked on Eid.

Keeping pilgrims safe while traveling:Expert recommendations to keep healthy this Hajj

By Michael Bou-Nacklie

DESTINATION JEDDAH 79

Saudi Health Ministry officials have urged that those over 65 or under 5, those who are recovering from a flu or pregnant should opt out of performing Hajj this year. With an estimated 4 billion pilgrims expected to converge on Islam’s holiest sites the worldwide dangers of swine flu transmission are greatly magnified.

HOW CAN YOU STAY SAFE?

There has been a lot of concern regarding how the H1N1 virus is transmitted, particularly with the influx of new arrivals due to Hajj season. It has not been uncommon to see locals donning masks when in crowded areas. But how effective is this method? Doctors have urged pilgrims to wear medical face masks. All travellers are advised to ensure that their polio vaccination is up to date. Travellers with a vaccination 10 years old should get a booster with the trivalent tetanus, diphtheria and polio vaccine as well as a vaccination against Hepatitis A. Polio is a highly infectious disease, caused by a virus which can spread rapidly, particularly in crowded situations. There is no cure for polio, but it is prevented through immunization. Pilgrims over the age of 65 should have the Pneumococcus vaccineHands soiled after using the toilet or changing a diaper, or swallowing water or food that is suspected of been contaminated by human faeces are the main forms of transmission for the Hepatitis A virus. A vaccination that can also be considered is hepatitis B, this is a highly infectious disease that is blood born. One way that male pilgrims can contract this disease is through the rites, where they get their head shaved. While Saudi clinics, hospitals and medical care are free, offering a very high standard of care, pilgrims need to remember to take their chronic medication with them, as well as a copy of the script for the border post and a letter from their doctor stating the patient’s medical condition and medication.

WHO ARE MORE AT RISK?

Individuals afflicted with the following conditions are more vulnerable to becoming seriously ill with the H1N1 virus:* Chronic lung disease (including people who have had a drug treatment for asthma within the past three years),* Chronic heart disease* Chronic liver disease* Chronic neurological disease (i.e. motor neuron disease, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis)* Suppressed immune systems (whether caused by disease or treatment)* Pregnant women* People aged 65 years or older* Children under 5 years

Although the risks are greatly diminished there are examples of diseases being transmitted far and wide during the Hajj even today. In 2000, Meningitis was carried to 14 countries by pilgrims on their return home.

The reason why the Hajj is such a hotbed for transmission is because of the tightly packed crowds of people, which quickly expedite infection through direct contact. Close contact also means coughing or contact with infected surfaces.

Some efforts have been put in place to stem infection rates, such as visa applications from pilgrims will be denied if their applications are not accompanied by a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Yellow fever is an acute, mosquito-borne viral disease, which can lead to severe illness and death.

Ocial directions of how to best utilize

To enjoy DJ to its fullest, here are some suggestions for locations to keep and carry a copy of the magazine:

At Home:Have DJ help you during awkward pauses when you have guests over or over the phone. Refer to DJ for conversational topics and interesting tid-bits about events and announcements in town. Shake well before use

In The Oce:Lost all the menus for places that deliver? Pick up DJ and use its handy directory for everything delicious that can be brought to you. Flip through the Red Sea Coast section and nd your next diving trip to make the strangers in your oce a little less strange.Store in cool space

In the Car:Tired of driving while everyone in your car ghts to decide where to eat? Keep it tucked away in your backseat as your reference on the go of where to get your food x.Shake twice before opening

In your Handbag/briefcase:Its small, its handy and its soft to the touch. Thanks to the invention of paper you can carry DJ wherever you go, stuck at the dentists? Pull out some DJ. Stuck outside during prayer time? Find out what other people are doing while you’re stuck with DJ. Waiting for rescue in the middle of nowhere cause you didn’t read DJ’s quick tips on how to have a safe desert outing? Read DJ until the helicopters arrive. This side up

Under your pillow:EEver wake up in the middle of the night craving some Taa-meya? Odds are the shops probably closed, or it will be once you get out of your pj’s, but you can highlight the number for the place for use rst thing in the morning.

Some (but not all) Distrubution Points:

WARNING: Side eects of DJ include: Activities, a desire to go out, a need to go diving, the inexplicable urge to go to tucked away restaurants.

If symptoms do not occur consult your doctor.
