Carpe Diem means ‘Seize the day.’ To me, it also means ‘no regrets.’ As I look back on the highlights of 2012, I remember smiling faces and laughter, hugs from beloved friends and family, people and places, but above all, the feeling of love and peace, which springs from contentment with life. Philosophers, psychologists, imams, and those with experience in life all concur that happiness stems from gratitude.

With the beginning of 2013, I vow to fully participate in Jeddah’s lively entertainment scene. Throw a party in style, listen to Jeddah’s talented DJs, venture into the world of online gaming, experience the pleasures of the Red Sea, or even travel the world to visit festivals of 2013… it’s all possible!

Take inspiration from the passion of those around you. Whether it’s creating a comic book like Dr. Naif Al Mutawa or opening a restaurant like Aseil, follow your dreams to fruition. Designers, artists, and entrepreneurs around Jeddah, why not add your name to this list of ‘doers’ rather than simply watch life go by? The support of loved ones can ensure your success; all you need is the courage to take that first step. If I hadn’t followed my heart, Destination Jeddah would never have seen the light of day, but I took the plunge into the world of publishing and I don’t regret my decision for a moment. Thank you to all our loyal readers who have given DJ a chance to make a difference in the lives of Jeddahwis.

Happy 2013 to all of DJ’s readers – make it a memorable one.

Feel moved or mad about something? Let us know!

You Said It

Get up, its time to get to work. Before dawn you get up, grab your breakfast, get into your uniform, and get to work. Once at work you pick up your tube and start cleaning the streets. Time passes, the sun gets hotter

and hotter, and it starts to burn. As the sweat rushes down your face, you put on a cap, and continue silently with no complaint; imagine this is your life! Okay, so lets pause and reverse. Ask me to stand in the boiling sun for two hours, better yet for half an hour, and I might die, not might but will actually die. I am sure that almost everyone feels that way. I mean would you blame us? The sun is insanely hot! Over millions of cleaners are walking in the roasting streets daily. Their sweat rushes down their back, and they still carry on. Without their hard efforts we would truly be living in a huge mess. I mean think about it, think about how our streets would look without them. How we would walk around in a pile of garbage. Our beloved city would seriously be filthy and distorted. They do so much for us, but sadly we barely appreciate it. I personally can never imagine walking down the streets with piles of garbage around me. One should do his\her best to make them feel thanked and appreciated for everything they have done for us. It does not have to be something big, it can be as simple as a bottle of water, or an honest thank you. So come on guys, lets all start together, it would put the biggest smile on their face, and that is a promise. Let’s put a truly beautiful smile on the shining purple soldiers underneath the boiling sun, and make them forget about the heat. Our appreciation is truly their biggest umbrella.

DESTINATION JEDDAH10

In order to preserve the beauty of Jeddah’s new Corniche, a certain level of high maintenance is required. This is not a job that just Jeddah Municipality must take care of; on the contrary, as citizens of this city, we all have a duty and an obligation to take excellent care of Jeddah and its developments by keeping it clean. There are a few factors, which if implemented at the new Corniche, would allow citizens to enjoy it for a much longer time. Firstly, more detailed signs such as“No Smoking in Play Areas” and “Do Not Walk On Grass” should be posted. It is argued that signs should not state obvious regulations such as the ones mentioned above; however, unfortunately quite a huge percentage of Jeddah’s citizens do not abide by those “unmentioned rules.” In order

New Corniche: Keeping It Clean!for people to take them more seriously, fines should be implemented. For example, at least enforce littering and smoking fines; some of the children’s play areas are already covered with cigarette butts and empty plastic cups scattered all over the newly placed grounds. In regards to smoking, although ashtrays should in fact be provided along the Corniche, there is not a single one, which therefore leads to smokers throwing their cigarettes on the ground. A way to avoid littering, or at least decrease the amount of litter, would be to provide staff to clean up around the clock. Jeddah is a beautiful city that is still increasingly growing with developments such as the new Corniche. Let’s clean up after ourselves and allow our city to shine.

Thumbs Up to...NCB and Almajal G4S “Beach Clean Up”

Barely Surviving Without A Driver!Thumbs Down to...

Jeddah is known as the “Bride of the Red Sea” with its beautiful beaches along the Red Sea coast. NCB and Almajal G4S joined forces and organized a beach clean up event in order to preserve the beauty of our city. The idea behind this event was to encourage citizens to volunteer and set an example for them to follow; and for NCB’s Sustainability and Procurement Department, it was a way to address sustainability and environmental issues within Jeddah. The beach clean up took place December 12, 2012, and was a major success. The 50 volunteers were split into teams of 10; NCB provided each group member with branded t-shirts and caps, gloves, waste bags, and the required equipment. As a result of the event, approximately 700 kilograms of waste was collected, volunteers felt good about themselves, and more citizens were given the opportunity to enjoy the day at a clean and beautiful beach!

A major crisis that we suffer from here in Jeddah, especially the females, is the lack of drivers and safe car services to help us move around the city. Whether it’s work related, grocery shopping, medical attention or any other necessity of our daily lives, we cant seems to get things done with out a car to transport us. As females living in this country, the lack of transportation services creates a huge difficulty, not only because finding a driver whom you can trust is nearly impossible but also because transportation services are almost nonexistent in Jeddah. True we have taxis all over the city and a few driver companies, yet they’re either fully booked or too pricey for everyone to use! We hope to see this matter solved by providing local companies for car services that are affordable and safer for our daily use.

How to tHrow Jeddah’s Legendary Party!

When your child moves to a new school, you as a parent, have to think of ways to help him/her fit in and break the ice with his/her classmates. An effective way of doing so, is throwing an epic party and inviting all your child’s classmates. That way your child will

gain popularity and make an excellent impression on all classmates!

Now, to begin with, you need to decide on the number of children you will be entertaining. Based on that, set the date, time and location. Next, and one of the most important points, is picking a theme for the party. Themes can be anything from cartoon characters to movies or even sports. The theme you pick will determine the invitations, decorations, snacks, games, cake, and outfits of the event.

Next to consider is the essence of the party, the part that will make the day come alive: games and entertainment! Depending on your child’s age, you can choose from a range of both indoor and outdoor activities such as a treasure hunt, piñata, charades, egg and spoon race, photo booths with props, inflatable bouncy castle, and many more.

Timing is critical when it comes to planning a party. Make sure you order the balloons, cake and props beforehand, especially if you want them customised to a specific theme. Some shops require two days notice, and others could take longer; therefore it is highly important to plan and manage your time in advance.

Also an important factor to ensure a hit party is preparing awesome give aways for children to take with them when the party is over. Whether it’s a cool and colorful candy bag, or an actual gift, make sure it relates to the theme of the party. That way the kids can keep the gift as a reminder of the most legendary party they’ve been to.

tiPs!VenueWhen it comes to location, you have to decide based on whether you want it indoor or outdoor, and your decision will also depend on your budget. If you prefer an outdoor party, options vary from recreation centers to renting soccer fields. Indoor options include kid’s all time favorite rides within malls such as Serafi Mall, Tahliya Center, and Funzee at Coral Mall.

FoodAt any event for children, the best way to go in terms of food and snacks are finger foods such as mini sandwiches and burgers cut up according to the theme, pizza, and of course cookies, chocolates, and most importantly, cake. An additional food option you may consider is renting machines for hot dogs, crepes, burgers, cotton candy, or popcorn.

Through circumstances out of my control, I took charge of my home, and ultimately my life. So far it’s been a wild and crazy ride, but one of the best things to ever happen to me. I will share my experiences and hopefully empower you. So, join me on my journey and my very own (forced) mini revolution that began when I was left... maidless in Jeddah.

Six months ago if you told me that I’d be doing housework, cooking and watching my kids all day, I would have laughed out loud and probably dropped the remote. The concept of us Saudi mums not having a maid, or 2 or 3, is so alien it’s near scandalous. Having lived abroad until I was 26, my cultural knowledge is limited and my Arabic is unfortunately terrible; two factors enough to make me feel like an alien; so, deciding to live without a maid was just another notch on my ‘outsider plaque’. After my maid decided to not come back but stay in her home country, I won’t lie - the first few months were disastrous. However, I pretty soon saw this tragedy turn into an opportunity for me and my family. To slightly misquote Taylor Swift: live-in maids and I are Never Ever Ever getting back together! This is in no way a judgment of women with maids. I’m lucky to work two jobs from home, so had I not been forced into it, I wouldn’t have changed a thing. But I also believe in life lessons and this was unquestionably a blessing in disguise. We have so many issues in our society making our lives difficult and one of the more blaring ones is our total reliance on domestic workers. With decent day care for working mums and some elbow grease, it can be done, and the benefits of independence are amazing. I now have a lady who comes once a week to clean, then neatly packs her things and leaves. My kids aged 6 and 8, make their own beds, put away their laundry and happily help me when I need it. With a maid they would never have learnt such skills. Take it from a tired mum; it’s well worth it.

In addition to being the founder and CEO of Teshkeel Media Group, and The Soor Center for Psychological Counseling and Assessment, Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa is also the brilliant creator of THE 99, which is the first group of comic superheroes born of an Islamic archetype, and was named one of the top 20 trends sweeping the globe!

Peacea subject to leave to adults.is too imPortantthe children of todaymust Providefor the future Peaceful world they wish to live in.

1. THE 99 is unique in the world of comics, with a different idea and concept. Can you tell us more about how it all began, and what made you incorporate Islam within the concept?I was one of those people who was not at all happy about how my faith was being projected to the world. From hostility to violence to extremism, the media was all too happy to highlight the bad apples at the expense of a bountiful orchard. And I complained. Every time something terrible happened in the name of Islam our leaders would go on the record saying that “that” wasn’t Islam. But that was not enough. In 2003 I decided that I would stop being reactive in my complaints and start being proactive by doing something about “that” and THE 99 concept was born. I am a big believer that the only way to stand up to extremism is through arts and culture inspired by the very fabric that inspires the extremists.

2. How did you decide which 99 countries the 99 heroes each came from?To be honest, the first 10 were random. But then the world took us very seriously and we had to put a lot more thought into each character. Here are some examples of the thinking process that went into naming some of the characters. When Islam was spread it was called Fat’h, or opening. The largest place ever opened to Islam was Indonesia so the Indonesian member of THE 99 is Fattah. He does not open anyone to Islam but he opens portals that THE 99 travel through. We recently announced the

Syrian member of THE 99, Raheema, as Syria needs all the mercy it can get right now. And the Kuwaiti members of THE 99 are the Mubdiyan, the creative twins, I thought that was only fair!

3. What’s next in store on TV for THE 99 animated series after MBC and Yahoo?THE 99 are on TV in 70 countries spanning 6 continents making it the first every television series from the GCC to launch globally. We are on TV in South America, the United States, some parts of Europe, MBC3 and Yahoo! Maktoob in MENA, Australia, Cartoon Network throughout Asia, Geo in Pakistan, TV3 in Malaysia, South Africa, Ireland and Turkey.

4. Can you tell us more about the second season of THE 99 and when we can expect it?I planned how Season 2 would end halfway through Season 1. I am extremely proud of the writers and the production and we have already presold the second series globally. The 26 scripts from Season 2 have been finalized and I have already approved the animatics for all 26 episodes and more than half of the episodes have been completed.

5. What differences will we see in season two of THE 99?In Season One we only introduce 16 members of THE 99. We will introduce another 10 characters in Season Two. The storylines will continue in the same vein that audiences worldwide have come to expect from us. The storylines are edgy without being racy and are wholesome fun for the entire family.

6. Where and how can your fans in Jeddah get their hands on a copy of THE 99?THE 99 is available on iTunes with a free App called THE 99 comics. Paper comics are available in Jareer and by email at [email protected] and Jeddah is actually the location for episode 19 of Season 1 as our Saudi Member of THE 99 is from Jeddah!

7. Do you have any future plans for THE 99 in Jeddah?I have had the good fortune of calling Jeddah my second home, literally. My wife is from Jeddah and my kids speak Hijazi, which usually invites a sideways look from me! I have spoken at the Jeddah Economic Forum two years in a row and various schools and universities. I am always looking for opportunities to spread our message so I will wait to hear of ideas from your readers!

8. What do you hope to achieve with THE 99? Where do you want it to take readers? When I started THE 99 ten years ago, I wanted to make a dent on how Islam is perceived. I can honestly say that what we have achieved with that objective has gone beyond our expectations. One of the best comments I ever got was from someone who tried to recruit me to run his company. I saw him socially and he said “Naif, that 99 thing, not so crazy anymore.” What I hope to achieve with THE 99 is for the concept to take its rightful place in history alongside Batman and Superman. Last year THE 99 appeared in a new series in which they fought cape to shoulder with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman against evil. But that is only the beginning. I want them to be as big as Batman and Superman and I believe that we are on the right path.

9. You mentioned before “teamwork and diversity are the glue needed to put together a peaceful world, and THE 99 is an example of how to make it happen.” How so?In the world of THE 99 it never matters what country you’re from, what your religion is, whether you’re a boy or girl, if you’re a girl whether you wear a hijab or not, all that matters is the power you have and whether it can help society solve the problem at hand. It is not about your past, it’s about your future. THE 99 work in teams of three and have to navigate their differences to magnify their powers.

10. Word of advice for your fans? Don’t ask for permission. Ask for forgiveness. 10 years ago when I had the idea for THE 99 people told me all kinds of reasons why I would not succeed. And I get it. The idea of creating a brand from the GCC based on Islamic archetypes and launching globally was one crazy man’s idea back then. Now, millions have seen the show, and we have created almost 1000 jobs in the process. The advice to fans of THE 99 is the advice to my own children when I took them to India to watch the first ever episode on a screen. What I said to them was “Baba, the only thing I want you to learn form this is that anything is possible anything at all.”

11. What is the most touching comment you have received from a child?Oh God, there are so many I can’t just choose. Check out the comments from our 1.5 Million Fans on www.facebook.com/the99fanpage

The ForgoTTen one Johfa fort

Johfa fort also known as Qasr al alyaa It is located around 160 kms north of Jeddah on the Jeddah – Yanbu Highway. As it is situated in the middle of the desert with no paved roads or clear signs, it’s necessary to have the coordinates to enter into a navigation system as follows: Navigation: 22° 44.377’N 39° 8.236’E

Day trips are the one of the best ways to enjoy the weekend. When the place isclose enough to Jeddah so it’s not an exhausting journey, then you’re free to fully enjoy

the trip. Johfa Fort sounded like the ideal destination, especially after listening to some of the exaggerated stories from friends.

By Mohammed Mirza

the Journey... We set off after midday and had a prolonged lunch at one of the highway restaurants and then continued on our journey. Later on, our tire got punctured and we had to call our friend from Jeddah who came an hour later and replaced the tire and also decided to join

us on our trip. We saw many herds of camels on the way and we were willing to try the famed camel milk, but time didn’t permit us as we already had several delays on our trip and would not have made it to the fort before sunset if we would have done otherwise.

After a long lunch, a frustrating tire puncture, an extra one hour wait on thehighway and after a tough drive in sand, we finally reached the fort in time to catch the sunset. It was an amazing sight, the beautiful ruins with the vast emptiness around it, along with the setting sun helped make the place look more splendid and it almost made us forget the difficulties we had in reaching the place. The first view one gets of the fort is of the western wall when coming from the highway, which is in a broken condition. We expected the whole fort to be in a similar condition, but we were proven wrong as surprisingly the eastern side of the fort is well intact.

here is some history about the placeJohfa Fort was constructed over 200 years ago by the Ottomans in order to safeguard the Muslim pilgrims coming from the north. It was used as a caravan station by them. It was constructed by using basalt; the fort has huge walls measuring over 8 meters in height and around 2 meters in thickness.

one has to drive a considerable amount on desert sand, over 10 kilometers to reach the fort as there are no paved roads leading to the fort, therefore an suV is a must. There were absolutely no tourists present and it felt pretty weird to us as it was absolutely pin drop silent, something which we Jeddawis are not used to. Near the Fort one may catch a glimpse of many beautiful Arak trees whose twigs are normally used as Miswaks (teeth cleaning twig), which are somehow surviving in the harsh desert conditions without human intervention. It was also the first time we saw an wild owl in Saudi Arabia.

the fort is currently not very popular due to its isolation, but this is bound to change since the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has opened and people have started to reside in the King

Abdullah Economic City, both of which are situated near the Fort. On the whole, I would say a day trip to Johfa Fort is an amazing experience. It gave us an opportunity to bear testimony to this country’s great history, witness beautiful desert landscapes, experience a bygone era, and allow us to just simply enjoy the idea of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city… even if it is for a little while.

tips FOR HEALTHY GAMING: 1. Diversify; don’t stick to one game

2. Take at least a 10 min break every hour to stretch and rest your eyes from the screen.

3. NEVER ever let the game get in the way of your prayers.

4. keep your body actiVe throuGh sports and exercises to aVoid not only weiGht Gain but also so many other health problems that can affect a lazy body.

5. Constantly do flexing exercises every hour to relax the tension on your muscles.

6. Know when to stop. There are many signs to addiction; for example if you find yourself constantly thinking about the game, and you can’t focus on anything else, you need to spend less time playing.

7. Time management; prioritizing your daily tasks is essential in order to keep your gaming from interfering with the more important things in your life.

It is extremely normal for kids of this generation to be completely awed by the online gaming world and spend multiple hours a week playing. But how much is too much?

tips TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD WHILE GAMING: 1. Know the game your kids are playing. Even

if you don’t understand the specifics, it’s very important to be aware of any negative messages your child might be exposed to during gaming.

2. Limit their gaming time. Make sure they understand that homework comes first and spending 5 or more hours on the screen is unacceptable, not to mention harmful to their sight.

3. don’t allow your kids under the aGe of 12 years old to play at internet cafés as the atmosphere miGht be unsuitable for such younG aGes.

4. Don’t tell; show. Instead of telling them off about spending too much time on a game, take them along with you on a walk, the gym or any other activity to occupy their day.

5. If your kids are old enough to play at an Internet café, visit it first to check out the atmosphere.

6. Never leave your young children unattended while playing.

7. Make sure of the appropriate ratings of the games they are playing; some games are 18+ rated for a reason and are not appropriate for young children.

8. Try to share the gaming experience with them. By playing the same games they do, it’s a great way of spending quality time with your kids as well as another way to monitor them.

My name is Nour Kelani. I am a fashion addict and designer, stylist, a wife and a mother, and DJ fashion editor. One of my main beliefs is that fashion is our daily dosage of art. I am a huge animal lover; in fact, I adopted a pug a few years ago and his name is Tamis.

Alexander the great joins Balenciaga

The Big B hires fashion designer Alexander Wang! Wang is known for his edgy, somewhat masculine womenswear designs. He won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2008, and his lines are now stocked globally by more than 30 of the world’s premiere retailers. I would love to see Nicolas Ghesquière start his own label! He was named Womenswear Designer of the Year by the CFDA, and was described as “fashion’s most sought-after and influential figure” by American Vogue. I personally like the idea of Wang joining the Big B, don’t get me wrong! I am a huge fan of Nicolas, but I also do think that it’s about time most of the big fashion houses consider a change. Will Alexander do a good job? I guess only time will tell!

The fashion year of Disney

Barney and Disney collaborated to create a fun five-minute video in which the Disney characters walked down the runway dressed by the world’s greatest fashion designers including Nicolas Ghesquiere and Alber Elbaz. All our favorite Disney characters were dieting and working hard to get in shape so they can look good on the runway - Way to go Minnie! The front row included the world’s most important fashion figures such as Naomi Campbell and Emmanuelle Alt. We noticed Harrod’s display windows in London were also beautifully inspired by Disney’s fairy tales. My favorite display was the Sleeping Beauty by Elie Saab. Make a list of the Yay’s and Nay’s (Do’s and Don’ts)

What to keep and what to never wear again!

I am a big believer that less is more! Quality over quantity! Buy fewer clothes of higher quality; it will look better and last longer.

Save money (not so much!) I consider each item in my closet an investment; good quality will last longer.

Neutral colors are always in! Don’t get rid of them, unless the cut is outdated.

Versatility! Keep items that are easy to wear in so many variations and it will never be boring.

Fit over anything else; if it doesn’t fit, get rid of it!

Invest in accessories to boost your wardrobe.

Store the whole outfit.

Put the SHOES and BAGS away from clothes! Don’t squeeze the clothes next to each other; like flowers in the garden need their space, so do your clothes! You must accommodate the clothes like an amazing shop so everything will look more inviting, and you’ll eliminate the usual complaint: I have nothing to wear! –Anna Dello Russo

“When I was a little boy, my father and I took a journey around Saudi Arabia. We visited several regions within the country throughout our trip. We thoroughly enjoyed learning the old and new heritage of each city. My father was keen to visit all the old souks and cultural museums of every city, and to taste their traditional food saying, “If you want to get to know the people of any country, you have to live their culture and taste their food”. In our travels around Saudi Arabia, we had

the opportunity to taste the most appetizing dishes such as the Buff and Manto of Makkah, the Salig of Taif, the Kubaibah of Hael, the Makhtoum Al Dajaj and Samak bil humar of Dammam, the Burum and Luhuh bil Makhtoum of Jizan, the Jarish and Kabsa of Najd…In addition, we tasted delicious desserts like the Jubbniah, the Hijazi dibyaza, the Masabib and Najdi mohalla…I felt very proud of my country’s beauty, heritage, culture and cuisine which I wanted to introduce to the whole world.

Just like the hospitality of the Saudi people, Aseil prides itself in being a restaurant that focuses on the people and providing them with the best taste, variety, quality and service so that they have a memorable Saudi cultural experience in every visit.

There is more to Aseil than mouthwatering food; the restaurant also actively promotes Saudis and Saudi culture. It proudly hires Saudi chefs in the kitchen, and Saudi waiters in the restaurant. While December, January and February are months of indoor snuggling in most cities, it is definitely not the case for Jeddah. In fact, these are the peak times for enjoying some AC-free outings instead of the malls and all the walled places we are bound to all year round; and almost synonymously, ‘outings’ in J-town is another term for dining. So make the most of this fantastic weather and dine in the open-air for the coming couple of months! Fill your days (and your appetite) with fresh morning breakfasts, lunches in the bright sunshine, afternoon tea gatherings and pleasantly breezy dinners!

DINING!THE SEASON OfOUTDOOR

CiLAnTRO CAFé Le ChATeAU

Nestled conveniently in the Le Chateau Complex in Tahlia St., Cilantro Café is one of the most peaceful places to start your day with. The Andalusia-inspired architecture and surrounding greenery give your breakfast experience an out-of-Jeddah feel; and a major plus is that it is probably the only outdoor place that doesn’t serve Shisha! Got to try the Continental breakfast – delicious and light. Cilantro is also a great option for your laid back evenings, and not pricy at all! Special breakfast items are available on the menu, including the classic continental breakfast and croque madame sandwich; that is in addition to the regular menu entries in Cilantro that can delectably satisfy a morning craving. Recommended for breakfast

COFFee BeAn & TeA LeAF (ShATi’e DiSTRiCT)

Having your morning coffee on Coffee Bean’s outdoor patio will certainly get you ready and set to start the day! The location is relatively peaceful, the place isn’t too crowded, the coffee is generally intense, and the breakfast offerings are prepared for your health and wellness. Aside from breakfast, Coffee Bean is a great hangout place for unplanned lazy evenings. Recommended for breakfast

JOFFReY’S CAFé MiLLenniUM MALL

If you’re the type of person who likes to wake up to a lively city, then hit Joffrey’s tomorrow morning! Overlooking the busier side of Tahlia St., Joffrey’s Café enjoys a lot of the city energy on its own veranda. Considering its location, you can drop by and sip a cup of

Turkish coffee or cappuccino before you start your daily errands; the warm sunshine and fresh air will definitely lighten you up from the early hours. Recommended for breakfast and evening tea or coffee.

nOSh LOUnge

This lounge is a very popular spot for weekend nights; but we also discovered that it’s a great place to enjoy a delicious open-air breakfast. With its Moroccan ambiance, the terrace of Nosh Lounge brings an authentically oriental experience that sets it aside from other cafes in town. Ranging from Foul to gourmet sandwiches, the varieties on the menu are guaranteed to satisfy your spontaneous morning cravings. Recommended for breakfast and dinner

LA TeRRACe

This new rooftop café has become one of the coolest places for Jeddah’s young crowd; you’re lucky if you manage to reserve a table on weekends, and if you’re late, your table won’t wait! The breeze on this 3rd floor rooftop venue is absolutely spectacular, and there aren’t many surrounding buildings to block the air flow. La Terrace is the sort of place you go to with a group of friends and spend 2-3 hours chatting, while enjoying a scrumptious meal. Besides the evening hangouts, you’ve got to try La Terrace for breakfast. The breakfast menu includes special set courses, continental and oriental, as well as Mana’ish. But make sure you’re there before noon, as they stop serving breakfast by then. Recommended for breakfast and dinner

Go With Your Family Or Friends For An Early Dinner And Spend The Evening In This Pleasantly Multicultural Complex – In Terms Of Visitors And Food Outlets! Recommended For Lunch And Dinner

Mayrig

The outdoor seating at Mayrig is in fact the coziest in town; you almost feel like you’re invited for dinner at a friend’s house rather than a restaurant. The location is superb, as it is almost always relatively calm on that side of Andalus St., and there is enough space for the view and the air flow. Generally, Mayrig is preferred for dinner; however the delectable Armenian dishes will be even more savored with a sun-kiss! Recommended for late lunch and dinner

Bubbles

when we talk about outdoor fine dining, bubbles’ terrace definitely tops the list! the classy mood, the gourmet food and the crowd give this place a particular exclusivity. this place is at its best at night, with the soft lighting and the view of jeddah’s fountain. bubbles and byblos both serve their delicious dishes on the terrace, so no restrictions. recommended for dinner

Zodiac

This trendy restaurant has one of the highest outdoor terraces in Jeddah; and therefore a higher sense of the fresh breeze. We prefer Zodiac in the evenings – although it’s open for lunch as well; the aura of the place better fits a night outing, particularly for special occasions. The international culinary dishes served are delectably creative, with truly artistic presentations. Recommended for dinner

Park hyatt Marina

This venue created a lot of buzz when it first opened – it is classy, breezy and with a sea view! With a numerous selection of cafes and restaurants, the Park Hyatt Marina is a great destination to spend your afternoons and evenings in. These days, we love going at sunset – the weather is fabulous, place is tranquil and service is at its best! For the early birds, Cappuccino Café is open from 8am – it will definitely become your morning spot if you try it out. Recommended for late afternoon tea

Barnies

Been there for as long as we remember, Barnies is a place that has kept its style and name consistent over the years. Its cozy terrace overlooks the most exciting part of Tahlia St. yet still secludes itself from the street noises. We prefer Barnies at night; it is just not a morning place. They actually don’t open for breakfast, the earliest they start is 2 pm and that is only on weekends. So an evening with friends on Barnies’ terrace with some Arabic Coffee and dates can be the best way to unwind at the end of a long hectic day. Recommended for dinner

Mélange

This young modern lounge has lately become one of Jeddah’s hot spots. With two separate terraces, Melange is spaciously designed to accommodate both the smokers and non-smokers comfortably. This

lounge is mostly popular at night, however it is open from 1 pm. We’ve tried a couple of items from the menu, and we must say, the chef always impresses us! Try their salads, steak and pastas, you’ll sure love them. The Shisha is also pretty creative, in terms of shape and flavors, fitting the modern theme of the lounge. Recommended for dinner

Al nakheel

If you’ve been in Jeddah since the 90’s, then you’ve definitely visited Al Nakheel at some point. One of the largest and oldest open-air places in town, Al Nakheel is an all-time favorite for Jeddah’s socialites. Authentically Saudi in essence, this restaurant is a lovely place to spend the evening at with a big group of friends or your entire family. If you haven’t gone yet, you must do soon– it is almost a city landmark! Recommended for dinner

Belajio

Outdoor dining at this entertainment resort is truly exceptional. Located on an island on Jeddah’s Corniche, the view and the weather are incredible. The outdoor restaurant, Dar Al Qamar, is an oriental cuisine with Saudi ambiance; this place is a good option for evening get-togethers in a vibrant setting. It is worth noting that the place gets over-packed on weekends, so if you want to enjoy the merits of this place, go on weekdays instead. Recommended for dinner

Chocolates are one of life’s greatest pleasures. They are created to be enjoyed...from the packaging to the very last bite. When you unwrap a piece of chocolate, take a moment to admire

the smooth texture, inhale its delicious aroma, and listen to the sound of the nice snap when you break off a piece.

When you put the piece of chocolate in your mouth, don’t bite and chew and swallow it straight away. Wait! Be patient, let it rest on your tongue and melt scrumptiously on its own, flooding all your senses. As described by a fellow chocolate-lover, “those tiny chunks are constant whispers of chocolate lingering on the tongue, echoing in the heart.”

Brownies are a divine combination of chocolate and cake. They come in different shapes, sizes, and textures, are meant to be chewy, moist, rich, intense, and simply heavenly. Due to the many restaurants and coffee shops offering brownies in Jeddah, sometimes it’s hard to know where to go for a taste of heaven on earth.

In order to save you the trouble of sampling them all to find the perfect one, we went through the enjoyable and delightful process of testing brownies from a selection of our favorite places. Now you can decide which brownie is The One for you. DeSTinATion JeDDAH

16 SrAroma do not only perfect fries and fettuccini, but also brownies. Their brownies are served warm and fresh, with just the right amount of chocolate chips sprinkled on top and their silky chocolate sauce oozes down from all corners of the brownie. Before you actually taste it, when they’re pouring the warm fudge sauce slowly along the brownie, your eyes will be satisfied; when you inhale the mouth-watering aroma of the chocolate fudge, your sense of smell will awaken. Now imagine what will happen to your other senses when you actually taste it...

14 SrAn enticing, creamy layer of frosting rests on top of the brownie from Nestle Toll House, adding to the superb taste of the brownie itself. Every ounce of their brownie drips with sweetness that lies within the thick rich frosting and intense chocolaty center.

7. The Counter6. Fuddruckers 18 SrFuddrucker’s brownie is a classic; it’s what we would describe as “old but gold.” They are shaped like a rectangle, slightly bigger than regular brownies, but then again, there’s no such thing as too much brownie! You won’t see crumbs or any left out pieces of chocolate with Fuddruckers; the texture is velvety, silky-smooth and defined. It will come to you freshly out of the oven at just the right temperature. Simply delectable.

40 SrA brownie from The Counter will make you understand the true definition of a perfect brownie! It comes with little chunks of chocolate on the top, which will tease and tantalize your taste buds when you taste the chocolate chunks with the rich, intense, exquisitely moist center. The beauty of this brownie is that the chocolate chunks blend with the mixture of the soft center, they merge and result in what can only be described as scrumptious and juicy!

A thick, rich layer of intense chocolate lies below a somewhat roughly textured exterior. The combination of those two qualities results in the Cheesecake Factory’s exquisite brownie. Topped with a generous amount of sprinkled chocolate chips you can indulge in with the moist center. Now that’s a taste of heaven on earth! Tip: their brownies are served cold, so if you like yours warm, make sure you tell the waiter.

15 SrPink Camel’s brownie is an absolutely perfect combination of moistness within the center and a hint of crunchiness outlining the brownie. The level of sweetness can only be described as superb. It is not too sweet, but just perfect. An appealing factor about Pink Camel’s brownie is their single-bite portions, which makes it harder for chocoholics to put them down. With Pink Camel, your taste buds are definitely in for a heavenly treat!

9. Marble Slab Creamery12 SrIf you like incredibly and deliciously sweet chocolate, this is the brownie for you! Marble Slab offers luscious, juicy brownies topped with a thick layer of chocolate fudge frosting that covers the brownie like a warm protective blanket. Take on the Water

Page 76: DJ Issue 48

For the past five years, the Atallah Center at the Corniche has had within its walls one of Jeddah’s most beautiful getaways to relax and unwind, Oriana Spa. Beginning with a small number of services such as reflexology and massages, the little but exquisite spa began to expand due to popular demand. Their list of services was, and still is growing, which therefore led to the opening of their second branch at Le Chateau in Tahliya Street. Oriana Spa and Salon offers their customers a remarkably memorable experience from the moment they walk in, until the end of their visit.

Your journey of relaxation will begin as soon as you walk into Oriana’s Salon and take in your surroundings; the calming light colors, the fragrance of freshly cut flowers, the soft ongoing music, and the friendly welcoming greetings. Before you proceed to your scheduled appointment, you will be offered a refreshing glass of water either with carrots, mint leaves, or lemon, which will soothe your nerves and give you a wonderful beginning to your treatment. Around the corner with a different entrance, you will find Oriana Spa, which is

completely separated from the salon only in terms of the entrance. Upon entering the spa you will see dimmed lights, sandy brown and cream colored walls, and you will inhale the relaxing scent coming from the candles and incense burners which are spread out throughout the entrance and the rooms. At Oriana Salon and Spa, clients are thought of as guests rather than customers, and are therefore given the most superior treatment in order to ensure satisfaction and comfort.

Oriana sets itself apart from other spas and salon s in Jeddah for a number of reasons; they provide excellent distinctive services, one of which is named Suzi, and was not available in Jeddah before Oriana began using it. Suzi is a computerized machine that is increasingly on the rise in terms of customer demands. It is an automated hydrotherapy system designed specifically to provide clients with sensational head and scalp water massaging thermal experiences, with a force that is equivalent to human hands and fingers.

Another distinguished service Oriana provides is the three-in-one Hydrotone System, which combines steam,

aromatherapy, and Vichy shower functions, in addition to the Hydrotone Thermal M which provides the optimum environment for body treatments.

At Oriana Spa and Salon, employees believe in treating the venue like it is their home, and customers like they are guests. They warmly welcome them, remember their birthdays, special occasions, and even minimal details such as how customers like their coffee. In addition, men can also benefit from their services by purchasing gift certificates for their mothers, wives, daughters, or sisters.

Oriana goes by the saying,

“It’s not only about what servIces we offer, but also the way we delIver them.”

oriana proudly states that suzi and the hydro system are available only at oriana salon and spa tahlia branch.

NEW YEAR HEALTH RESOLUTIONS AND THE TOP

WALKING SPOTS IN JEDDAH

• Lose weight: Even if it is a few pounds, there is nothing like feeling lighter and fitter. The numerous health benefits include improved circulation, more active lifestyle, and higher levels of self-confidence.

• Say “No” to smoking: 2013 can be a good time to quit smoking. Smoking kills a person silently and the best gift you can offer to your body right now would be to quit smoking.

• Get in touch! Admit it, life is hectic and people are extremely busy; sometimes too busy to catch up with old friends or distant family relatives. Many estranged families suffer from depression and other diseases due to lack of social interaction. Give that old best friend of yours a call today - for your health’s sake.

• Sleep tight and sleep right: You may be a night owl, but the benefits of sleeping soundly at night are improved metabolism, healthy heart, stress reduction, and even weight loss! Try this New Year’s resolution to see how your body responds to this new behavioural change that corresponds to Mother Nature – sleep when it’s dark.

• Organize and de-stress: Doing physical activities such as walking, jogging, and

eating healthy along with proper time and work management can help keep the negative aspects of stress at bay.

Here are a few stress-relieving, metabolism-boosting walking spots in Jeddah that you can try for a refreshing start to a new you.

1. In front of the Westin Hotel: This has been a popular walking spot for both men and women for over five years. Youths and seniors love to take this long walk that stretches from the Westin hotel for about 3 km. What makes walking here even better? The winter season!

2. Corniche: Located opposite to Hilton Hotel, Sheraton Hotel and AlBilad Hotel, this is a favorite picnic spot for many families and a great walking spot too along the Red Sea.

3. Globe roundabout, Mohammadiya: Four years ago, only a few people would be seen walking here. Now, many men and women walk around the open bordered area before the roundabout, just opposite to Roshan Mall. People even walked when they were fasting in Ramadan. Indeed, when you want to do something, you will do it and you will find the place to do it as well.

It’s a new year with new goals, perspectives and a beautiful winter out here in Jeddah. New Year beginnings bring about a new “you” in many, and if you are those millions of people who are working towards your health resolutions, here are a few tips to help you decide what your resolutions can be and how you can make them happen.

This boundary is one of them and is now popularly known to be one of the best spots for pregnant women to walk in their third trimesters. You are more likely to find pregnant women here than any other place.

5. Naseem District, opposite Andalus Mall: Known for its quiet and vast empty lands with boundaries and greenery, the general public have taken this spot near the KAU University as the one of the best walking spots in town.

6. Public parks in Al Andalus and Nawras: Opposite Corniche, near the Jamjoom center, Jeddah’s exclusive renovation near the fountain includes family parks, play area for children, and washroom facilities; an excellent walking spot.

7. Local parks: Jeddah is increasingly concentrating on its beauty to attract tourism and this includes parks in each residential

area. Parks are perhaps the most convenient and easiest places to access for walking outside since they are near your residence where you don’t need to bother about traffic or driver hassles (especially for women).

How should you walk and what should you consider?

Before you plan for a long walk, stretching is crucial to ensure that you walk longer and your muscles become more flexible. You can begin with a 5 minute moderately-paced workout or walking pattern followed by another 10 minutes of fast walking. Your shoes should be comfortable so you complete your activity conveniently. Your clothing should also be considered if you are going to walk at least 3 times per week for 90 minutes. Hydrate yourself with enough water while walking as lack of water may result in body cramping at night and dehydration. Always keep a bottle of water with you.

OSTEOpOrOSIS… WHAt IS tHIS All About?

Brittleness, increased porosity, decreased density, or simply the weakening of the bone; these are the most commonly used descriptions for osteoporosis. Basically, it is a condition which involves a gradual loss of calcium which causes the bones to become thinner and more likely to break.

Osteoporosis is considered a silent disease because there are usually no symptoms. Occasionally patients complain from mild generalized weakness, and it is usually discovered accidentally or when the patient sustains a fracture from minor falls or injuries.

Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) is the established standard for detection of osteoporosis through qualitative CT scan (QCT), regular x-ray and DEXA scan. The results of these tests are correlated to the patient’s age, sex and race and may confirm the presence of osteoporosis or just a mild bone density reduction known as osteopenia.

What are the risk factors for development of osteoporosis?• Menopausal women and men over 60.• High doses of Cortisone therapy for more than three months.• Family history of osteoporosis.• Other illnesses such as diabetes, renal failure, thyroid diseases and cancer.• Smoking.• Excessive weight loss and weakness.• Excessive consumption of soda and carbonated drinks.

It’s a given that bones get brittle and weak; but well-informed people are therefore prepared regarding its proper management through standard methods of bone screening for the early detection of osteoporosis.

Saving the planet has been our primary concern; How to save it? What can we do for it? And how to participate in making it a better place? All the answers for these questions are simple solutions that we can take immediate actions towards to save our planet. If there is a will then there is always a way, so here are some simple tips to start saving our planet from your work place…

TIpS GrEEN yOur COmmuTE• Carpooling, taking public transit, biking, walking, will reduce ghg emissions and save energy. • There is also various health benefits associated with these forms of transportation and it’s economical.

rECyClE• Separate waste into plastic, paper and aluminium, use colour coordinated trash cans for separation.• Provide a waste disposal for electronics, compact disks, batteries etc.• Hire local companies to collect these materials for reuse.

ElECTrONICS• Improve the energy settings for computers and other devices in the office.• Set computers to energy-saving settings and make sure to shut them down when you leave (“standby” will continue to draw power). Unplug power cords at the end of the day.

• When purchasing equipment look for energy star labelled products (Energy Star is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping to save money and protect the environment)• Add an environmental message to your signature on your email account, please see the link and follow the given steps.http://thinkbeforeprinting.org/get-the-message.php

vIrTuAl mEETINGS• Virtual meetings reduce ghg emissions by a substantial amount.• They’re also cost effective due to the absence of aeroplanes, cars and hotel rooms.

BrING yOur luNCh • Bringing lunch to work in reusable containers is likely the greenest way to eat at work.• Getting delivery and takeout ends with a lot of packaging waste, but if you do order delivery, join co-workers in placing a large order.• If you do go out for lunch, try biking or walking instead of driving.

GrEEN STATIONAry • Use recycled paper and envelopes, and use scrap paper when it’s absolutely necessary to use paper.• Pens and pencils can also be made of recycled materials, and refillable pens, markers and ink cartridges are preferable to disposable ones.

TurN OFF ThE lIGhTSLighting accounts for 30% of energy use in office buildings! By using the best technologies, 70–90% of the energy used for lighting can be saved without any loss of function.• Install light sensors so that lights in sporadically used spaces turn off automatically when not in use.• Replace low efficiency lighting with higher efficiency fluorescents. Substituting just one compact fluorescent light (CFL) for a traditional bulb will keep one-half ton of CO2 out of the atmosphere over the life of the bulb.• Don’t forget to turn off the lights (even in the bathroom) when not in use and at the end of the day!

KEEp IT DIGITAl• There is no need for paper at all, keep things digital. • Keep files on computers instead of in file cabinets.• Review documents on screen rather than printing them out.• Use a virtual calendar rather than a tangible calendar.• Use a white board to reduce paper usage.• Green print software is an innovative interface that allows you to eliminate pages, images and selected content from print jobs before they are sent to the printer.
