Why Data
- The right product to the right person
- The right ad in the right place for the right person
- Insights for decision making as big data show trends
Friday, December 13, 13
Why Data
- 1 out of 10 job seekers between the ages of 16 and 34 have been rejected for a job because of something posted on their social network profiles
- Banks and Creditors turn to Twitter, Facebook for social demographic and behavioral Data to create consumer profiles
- Companies like IBM have tools to sense and prevent employees leaking sensible information through text analysis
- Applications like Peak allow micromanaging become microsurveillance Timesheet that fills itself out automatically as it hooks up into cloud-based productivity applications like Github, Google Apps, and Dropbox, tracks people activities, reports back to the boss in humanoid language and without any input from the workers.

Why (bio) Data
February 2013- Tesco’s staff members wear electronic armbands to optimize logistics activities, and being monitored on their efficiency and work rates
November 2013- An undercover journalist at Amazon revealed conditions of workers at warehouse holding handsets monitoring timing and efficiency

Empowerment happens when (marginalised) individual and collective can acquire
skills and gain opportunities to develop knowledge, self-sufficiency, and achieve inclusion in
decision-making processes.

From the idea to the product
Friday, December 13, 13
- Radical control on the product itself all the information and documentation of every components, from the software to the hardware schematics and the usage information.
- Modularity choice of interfacing the product with the technology or devices that users select as more appropriate for their needs
- Access to community resources to understand how to deal, and subsequently, to control the technology around them.
- Economic empowerment because it enables the creation of derivative products that can be run for personal use or as new profitable enterprises

The Libelium Team - April 2011
“The main finality of the Radiation Sensor Board for Arduino is to help people in Japan to measure the levels of radiation in their everyday life after the unfortunate earthquake and tsunami struck Japan in March 2011 and cause the nuclear radiation leakages in Fukushima. We want to give the chance to measure by themselves this levels instead of trusting in the general advises which are being broadcasted. The usage of this sensor board along with the affordable and easy to use Arduino platform helps people to get radiation values from specific places. As technical guys, we feel the responsibility of providing our support in those areas where we can contribute. As a result, first batch has been shipped to Japan at no charge to the Tokyo Hackerspace and other working groups. The design of the board is open hardware and the source code is released under GPL.”

2012Funds from this
kickstarter campaign will go towards the
production of the limited version of this geiger counter -which will basically be parts
since a full production run is already in the
works.
Additional fund will be used towards
continuing safecast efforts and data
collection.

One of the great utilities of the Safecast project is the ability to collect and analyze environmental data on an unprecedented scale.
As Safecast passes the two year mark with collecting radiation data in Japan it is now possible to begin to look back over the changes in radioactivity across different parts of the country and see where this may all be heading.
