Podcasts are audio or video recordings designed to be downloaded and played on portable media devices. Podcasting has its roots in early MP3 music player (pre-iPod) and RSS (really simple syndication) technologies. This presentation will outline the history of podcasting, benefits of podcasting for teaching and learning, how podcasts are created and used, and discuss the basic tools to help anyone get started on creating podcasts.

allowing time and place shifting • iPod NOT required

iPods are Not Required• Despite the name, you don’t need

an iPod to listen to podcasts. • All you need is an MP3 player or

smart phone. • You can even burn a podcast to a

CD and playing it on the CD player in your living room or your car.

• It’s audio content/entertainment when and where you want it.

• RSS 1.0 led to rise of BLOGS, i.e., “web logs” • RSS 2.0 allows an “enclosure”, a link to another

the Podcast Consumer, awareness of Podcasting has grown 105% since 2006 from 22% in 2006 to 45% in 2012.

• The percentage of consumers indicating they have listened to an audio podcast has grown 163% from 11% in 2006 to 29% in 2012.
